    • County Senior Hurling Quarter Final

De La Salle 1-16 Tallow 2-9

A superb goal from John Keane helped our senior hurlers to a hard fought quarter final victory over Tallow in Fraher Field Park last Friday night. This was a game in which we struggled with our shooting throughout, hitting eighteen wides and in the end were relieved to have made it through to the last four. On a positive note it was great to see Eddie Barrett return to action for the last few minutes.

We began poorly and after eight minutes trailed 0-4 to 0-1 with a Jake Dillon free our only score. Dean Twomey pointed from play in the ninth minute but Tallow got in for a goal in the 15th minute. An exchange of points involving a Jake Dillon free saw us trail 1-5 to 0-3 after twenty minutes. We gained control at this stage and five points in a row from Dean Twomey (2), Adam Farrell, Jake Dillon and John Mullane had us level by the 29th minute. Tallow regained the lead from a free before late points from David Greene and Paudie Nevin saw us ahead 0-10 to 1-6 at the break.

Tallow regained the lead with two early points but Jake Dillon equalised in the fourth minute. In the eight minute the excellent Shane McNulty found John Keane with a pass and John crashed the ball to the net with a brilliant strike. Points from John Keane and Paudie Nevin (2) had us ahead 1-14 to 1-8 after seventeen minutes as our wide count mounted. Tallow ended seventeen scoreless minutes when they pointed in the 19th minute and followed with a goal in the 22nd minute to bring the margin down to two points. John Keane pointed in the 23rd minute and John Mullane made the game safe when he stretched our lead to four in the 29th minute.

We now await the semi final draw knowing we have a lot of improving to do if we are to claim the ultimate prize.

Scorers: John Keane 1-2 (0-1 free), Jake Dillon 0-4 (frees), Dean Twomey and Paudie Nevin 0-3 each, John Mullane 0-2, Adam Farrell and David Greene 0-1 each.

Passage 2-16 De La Salle 3-10

Our minor hurlers were beaten for the third game in a row in close hard fought encounters when Passage deservedly took the points from Gracedieu last Wednesday. We now have two games left and must win both to claim the final semi final place.

Passage opened the scoring within the first minute with a point but we replied when Evan Whelan and Shane Ryan combined for Thomas Douglas to goal. Two points had Pasage level by the eight minute but two minutes later we were back in front when good work by Thomas Douglas resulted in Cormac McCann goaling. Points from Brian Cunningham and Shane Ryan in the 12th and 18th minutes stretched our lead but Passage replied with two of their own and goaled in the 27th minute to level it up. An injury time point by Shane Ryan saw us lead 2-3 to 1-5 at half time.

The second half began with Passage goaling in the second minute to take a lead they were never to lose. They added two points before Cormac McCann replied with one for us. Two more Passage points followed but we responded with one from Conor Dunphy and two frees from Michael Roche. A Passage free saw them lead 2-10 to 2-7 midway through the half. Two frees from Brian Cunningham reduced the gap to the minimum but five points in a row saw Passage ahead 2-15 to 2-9 with four minutes left. Michael Roche hit a point from distance and the gap was down to two points with a minute left when Cormac McCann got his sixth goal in four games. Passage replied with a point in injury time to take the spoils on the night.

Scorers: Cormac McCann 2-1, Brian Cunningham (frees) and Michael Roche (0-2 frees) 0-3 each, Thomas Douglas 1-0, Shane Ryan 0-2, Conor Dunphy 0-1.

De La Salle 2-8 Ballinameela 1-10

Our senior footballers retained their senior status for 2015 and also qualified for a quarter final clash with An Rinn after a hard fought win over Ballinameela in Fraher Field last Sunday night. This was a tight tense affair with both teams aware that losing meant a relegation play off and the performances certainly seemed to be affected by this.

Ballinameela who had first use of the wind opened the scoring with a point in the eight minute but  the excellent Mitchell Casey replied with two in the 9th and 14th minutes. Ballinameela replied in the 15th minute but Mitchell kicked his third point immediately after. Ballinameela added two points to lead 0-4 to 0-3 after twenty minutes. We regained the lead in the 22nd minute when Patrick Kennedy got on the end of good work by Conan Watt to finish to the net. Ballinameela levelled matters with points in the 24th and 27th minutes but then Conan Watt and Colm Morris set up Lee Hayes to score our second goal in the 29th minute. Ballinameela pointed before half time to see us lead 2-3 to 0-7 at half time.

We were rocked on the resumption when Ballinameela goaled within thirty seconds. We equalised in the third minute when Ian Cantwell pointed a free after Lee Hayes was fouled. Ballinameela regained the lead in the fourth minute but points from Colm Morris and Mitchell Casey in the fifth and sixth minutes had us ahead 2-6 to 1-8. After those five scores in the first six minutes there followed fourteen scoreless minutes before Ballinameela equalised in the 20th minute. Two excellent points by Mitchell Casey and Ian Cantwell in the 26th and 28th minutes put us back in front. Ballinameela tried frantically for the goal they needed to win but all they could manage was a point in the third added minute and the final whistle sounded on the kickout.

Scorers: Mitchell Casey 0-5, Patrick Kennedyand Lee Hayes 1-0 each, Ian Cantwell 0-2 (0-1free), Colm Morris 0-1.

Passage 2-14 De La Salle 1-14

Our senior hurlers produced a disappointing performance when going down to the county champions Passage in Walsh Park last Saturday night. This was a game in which an early goal for Passage gave their confidence a great boost and when we cancelled out that goal they came with another before half time to regain a lead they were never again to relinquish. From our point of view both goals scored in crowded goalmouths were defensively poor and we are left with a lot to work on if we are to progress in this year’s championship.

We began with Jake Dillon pointing a free in the third minute after a foul on Kevin Moran. However three minutes later we found ourselves 1-2 to 0-1 in arrears. Three further points from Jake Dillon saw us trailing 1-5 to 0-4 after twenty minutes. Kevin Moran pointed in the 21st minute but with seven minutes left in the half we trailed 1-7 to 0-5. A point from Jamie Sage reduced the margin and then Jake Dillon got on the end of Kevin Moran’s free to score a well taken goal. John Keane equalised immediately and an exchange of points saw the teams level again until on the stroke of half time Passage struck for their second goal to lead 2-8 to 1-8 at the break.

Passage began the second half with two points inside four minutes but points from Jake Dillon, John Keane and John Mullane made it 2-10 to 1-11 by the tenth minute. However, Passage came back and hit the next three points to restore their five point lead midway through the half. A Dean Twomey point was cancelled out by a Passage free before points from John Mullane and John Keane reduced the margin to a goal with two minutes plus injury time left. We never looked like getting a goal though and Passage ended as deserving winners.

Scorers: Jake Dillon 1-6 (0-5 frees), John Keane 0-3, John Mullane 0-2, Kevin Moran, Jamie Sage and Dean Twomey 0-1 each.

Dungarvan 1-20 De La Salle 2-13

Our minor hurlers were beaten for the second time when they went down to Dungarvan in a very good game of hurling in Dungarvan last Wednesday. Both team played fairly well on the night but Dungarvan were that bit better and were worthy winners before a good sized crowd for a game that doubled as the John McLoughlin Memorial Tournament for the host club.

We had a change of goalkeeper for this game as regular keeper Jamie Roche was work tied and he was replaced by U-16 keeper Sean O’Brien who proved an able replacement. The game began brightly and points from Shane Ryan (2) and Jack Laffan saw the sides level 0-3 each after nine minutes. Dungarvan then pointed twice in a minute before Cormac McCann got on the end of Michael Roche’s delivery to score his fourth goal in three matches. The Dungarven keeper then made a fine stop from Shane Ryan who pointed the resultant sixty five. Two points from Dungarvan had the sides level again after sixteen minutes 1-4 to 0-7. An exchange of points involving Jack Laffan had the sides level again with ten minutes left. Points from Eddie Meaney and Shane Ryan put us ahead again but Dungarvan replied with two of their own and it was still all square at half time 1-7 to 0-10.

The third quarter saw Dungarvan well on top and our only points were from Eddie Meaney and a Brian Cunningham penalty as we found ourselves trailing 0-16 to 1-9. We were back in the game in the 17th minute when Thomas Douglas goaled after good work from Eddie Meaney. Jack Laffan then equalised and after the referee played a good advantage Eddie Meaney found himself through on goal but his shot was brilliantly turned over the bar by the Dungarvan keeper. Dungarvan equalised again but Brian Cunningham’s point in the 23rd minute put us back in front 2-12 to 0-17. The vital score came a minute later when Dungarvan goaled and followed with a point. Conor Dalton reduced the margin to two points but Dungarvan had the last two points of the game to secure their victory.

After the game the John McLoughlin cup was presented to the Dungarvan captain and Eddie Meaney was selected as man of the match. Thanks to the Dungarvan club for their hospitality after the game.

Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-4 (0-1 free, 0-1 ’65), Jack Laffan and Eddie Meaney 0-3 each, Cormac McCann and Thomas Douglas 1-0 each, Brian Cunningham 0-2 (0-1 penalty), Conor Dalton 0-1.

De La Salle 7-10 Roanmore 3-4.

Our U-14 Hurlers completed the league section of the U-14 Championship with a good win over a talented and committed Roanmore side at Gracedieu on Monday last. The score line does not reflect the competitive nature of this game and the contribution Roanmore made to a very exciting match.

Both sides opened brightly De La Salle with a Colm Maher point and Roanmore with a goal. We drew level with another Colm Maher point and a free from Kevin Hennessy. Both sides exchanged two more points to leave the sides level at half time De La Salle 0-5 to Roanmore 1-2.

De La Salle  started the second half very well with a couple of goals from Seaghan Walsh and a point from Aidan Gannon. Roanmore responded with two excellent goals to leave the minimum between the sides. At this stage De La Salle capitalised on their chances with two further goals from Dylan Finn and a further two from Seaghan Walsh, whilst at the other end Roanmore were unlucky on a number of occasions. Both sides exchanged a couple of points with the excellent Colm Maher again on the scoreboard for De La Salle. Aidan Gannon scored the final De La Salle goal and two further points completed the scoring. Both sides now progress to the knockout stages of the championship, with our next fixture likely to be on September 13th.

De La Salle 2-19 Roanmore 0-11

Our senior hurlers ensured they would top the group with a comfortable win over neighbours Roanmore in Walsh Park last Friday night. This was a game in which we had to work hard throughout the first half to establish a four point lead but we went on to dominate after the break and a goal in each half from John Keane helped us to victory.

We began with Jamie Sage, who was making his first senior start, pointing inside the first minute. Points by Adam Farrell, Kevin Moran and Jake Dillon saw us level at 0-4 each after thirteen minutes. We took the lead in the 15th minute when Kevin Moran’s delivery was deflected by John Keane with his hand to the net and we should have had another immediately after but the Roanmore keeper saved well. Points by Bryan Phelan and Shane McNulty stretched our lead but Roanmore replied with two of their own. A David Greene point was cancelled out before John Keane ended the first half scoring with a point to see us lead 1-8 to 0-7 at the break. Roanmore opened the second half scoring but we replied with six in a row from Jake Dillon (3), Adam Farrell, Shane McNulty and Dean Twomey to lead 1-14 to 0-8 midway through the half. A double exchange of points involving Paudie Nevin and Kevin Moran was followed by Roanmore final score in the 23rd minute to make it 1-16 to 0-11. Adam Farrell added another point and then Kevin Moran, Shane McNulty and Jamie Sage combined for John Keane to goal. We ended the scoring with points from Jake Dillon and Dean Twomey

    • Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs East Intermediate Hurling Championship

St. Saviours 0-21 De La Salle 2-11

Our understrength intermediate hurlers exited the championship when they went down to St. Saviours in Walsh Park last Saturday in a re-fixture. Fielding only eight of the team that played Ferrybank in the last game we had only thirteen intermediate players available on the day and had to call on some of the junior team to fulfil the fixture. To compound matters we lost David Sutton to injury early in the game but credit to the lads they put up a strong fight and it was only in the last ten minutes that our oppponents took over. We actually outscored our opponents from play but our tendancy to foul saw them score fourteen points from placed balls which ultimately proved very costly.

We started well with the wind and led 0-4 to 0-0 after five minutes through Brian Cunningham, Tom Moran, Donal Barron and Evan Whelan. Three frees from Brian Cunningham had us ahead 0-7 to 0-3 after twenty minutes and in the 22nd minute Donal Barron’s shot from distance found the net. St. Saviours then scored three points in a row to leave us ahead 1-7 to 0-6 at the interval.

The second half began with a double exchange of points involving Lee Hayes and Brian Cunningham. A superb individual goal from Lee Hayes put us ahead 2-9 to 0-8 in the ninth minute. A further exchange of points involving Brian Cunningham, after a foul on Lee Hayes, was followed by five consecutive points from St. Saviours to make it 2-10 to 0-14 with eleven minutes left. Brian Cunningham pointed a free in the 21st minute which proved to be our last score and St. Saviours replied with two frees of their own. They equalised in the 25th minute, somewhat controversially, when a shot that appeared from the stand to be wide was initially waved as such by the neutral umpire only for the referee to overrule and a point was the decision. It mattered little as St. Saviours were now dominant and three further frees and a point from play ensured their victory.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-7 (0-6 frees), Donal Barron and Lee Hayes 1-1 each, Tom Moran and Evan Whelan 0-1 each.

Ballygunner 2-14 De La Salle 2-13

Our minor hurlers were narrowly beaten by Ballygunner in an entertaining game last Tuesday in Gracedieu. It was a game we dominated early on but Ballygunner came back into it before the break. The teams were level several times in the second half before Ballygunner got the scores at the vital time to claim the points.

We began well and two points from Brian Cunningham followed by a goal from Thomas Douglas had us ahead 1-1 to 0-0 after eight minutes. An excellent save by Jamie Roche was followed by points from Shane Ryan and Thomas Douglas. Ballygunner pointed and then Evan Whelan goaled to make it 2-4 to 0-1 after sixteen minutes. Ballygunner then took over and though we added points from Evan Whelan and Brian Cunningham they had reduced our lead to 2-6 to 1-6 at half time. An early second half point by Ballygunner was followed by two from Brian Cunningham. We then conceded a soft goal and despite a Michael Roche point it was all square at 2-9 each after eight minutes. Three points by Brian Cunningham saw the teams level three more times before Ballygunner points in the 26th and 30th minutes put them ahead. Shane Ryan reduced the arrears in injury time and we had one last chance to equalise but it dropped short and the whistle sounded.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-8 (0-7 frees), Thomas Douglas and Evan Whelan 1-1 each, Shane Ryan 0-2 (0-1 free), Michael Roche 0-1.

Panel: Jamie Roche, Gavin Coppinger, Adam Doyle, Lee Wall, Craig Dowling, Jack McCarthy, Jeff Cahill, Eddie Meaney, Jack Laffan, Conor Hogan, Shane Ryan, Michael Roche, Evan Whelan, Brian Cunningham, Thomas Douglas, Mikey Costigan, Evan Deegan, Sean Carton, Sean O’Brien.

De La Salle 2-19 Mount Sion 2-17
Our minor hurlers collected their second brace of points in this year’s championship when they staged an extraordinary comeback to defeat Mount Sion in Mount Sion last Tuesday. Trailing 2-15 to 1-5 with less than 25 minutes left they gradually took control of the game with outstanding displays from team captain Brian Cunningham and Eddie Meaney and after drawing level went on to win the game with two injury time points.
Mount Sion had first use of the wind and led 1-1 to 0-0 after three minutes. Two points from Brian Cunningham reduced the gap but Mount Sion replied with two of their own. Brian Cunningham pointed again before Jack McCarthy and Michael Roche combined for Cormac McCann to goal and it was 1-3 each after fourteen minutes. Mount Sion came back with two points before Shane Ryan halved the arrears with a point in the 17th minute. However, from there to the break Mount Sion dominated and outscored us 1-8 to a solitary point from Brian Cunningham to lead 2-13 to 1-5 at half time.

Things got worse after the break when they added two further points in the first five minutes. However two minutes later Cormac McCann struck for his second goal after good work by Evan Whelan and Conor Dalton. At this stage our management decided to push Jack McCarthy up on the Mount Sion sweeper and his aerial ability caused all sorts of problems for the defence. Between the 9th and 24th minutes we scored nine unanswered points from Brian Cunningham (5), Shane Ryan (2), Eddie Meaney and Thomas Douglas to make it 2-15 to 2-14. Mount Sion pointed in the 25th minute and an exchange of points involving Brian Cunningham had us still trailing 2-17 to 2-15 with two minutes left. A foul on Jack McCarthy saw Brian Cunningham point the free and then Eddie Meaney equalised. In to injury time and points from distance by Adam Doyle and Michael Roche completed a superb fightback.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-11 (0-7 frees), Cormac McCann 2-0, Shane Ryan 0-3, Eddie Meaney 0-2, Thomas Douglas, Adam Doyle and Michael Roche 0-1 each.

Panel: Jamie Roche, Evan Deegan, Adam Doyle, Lee Wall, Evan Whelan, Jack McCarthy, Jeff Cahill, Eddie Meaney, Gavin Coppinger, Conor Dalton, Shane Ryan, Michael Roche, Cormac McCann, Brian Cunningham, Thomas Douglas, Craig Dowling, Jack Laffan, Mikey Costigan, James Stone, Sean O’Brien.

Nire 2-15 De La Salle 0-8
Our senior footballers are now in a battle with Ballinameela to avoid the relegation play off after this defeat to a very good Nire side in Stradbally last Wednesday. Nire dominate this game throughout and led 1-8 to 0-4 at half time before continuing to stay in control in the second half.

Panel: David Dennison, Martin Sheehan, Colm Clancy, Christopher Sheehan (captain), Oran Keevers, Thomas Kearney, Stephen Dalton, Ian Cantwell, Mitchell Casey, Colm Morris, David Greene, Conan Watt, David Kennedy, Lee Hayes, Patrick Kennedy, Kevin Moran, John Mullane, Kenneth Byrne, Patrick Flynn, David Breen, Michael Roche, Eamonn Dalton, Peter O’Hagan.

    • County Junior Football ‘Senior Attached’ Championship

Stradbally 3-14 De La Salle 2-10
Our junior footballers were beaten by Stradbally in an open and entertaining contest in Gracedieu last Sunday. A first half scoring spree of 2-3 between the 23rd and 27th minutes proved the decisive period of this game in which we missed many chances including five clear cut goal scoring opportunities. However, with nine changes from last week’s debacle against Ballinameela it was a very much improved display.
We opened the scoring in the second minute with Joey Twomey pointing. Stradbally replied in the ninth and tenth minutes before Joey Twomey equalised in the 14th minute after Patrick Fitzgerald was fouled. Patrick Fitzgerald pointed in the 17th minute but Stradbally equalised immediately. Willie Walsh restored our lead in the 19th minute but in the 21st minute Stradbally got in for their first goal. Joey Twomey reduced the lead in the 22nd minute after good work by Craig Dowling but then came that Stradbally blitz and we found ourselves behind 3-6 to 0-5.

Our lads fought back and David Breen, Eoin Casey and Joey Twomey combined for Peter O’Hagan to goal. Joey Twomey followed up with a pointed free after Patrick Fitzgerald was fouled before Stradbally pointed to lead 3-7 to 1-6 at the break. The first twenty minutes of the second half saw both sides trade four points each with ours coming from Joey Twomey, Barry Twomey (2) and David Farrell to make it 3-11 to 1-10. Stradbally pointed in the 22nd minute before Joey Twomey got in for a goal after good play by David Farrell. However, Stradbally finished the stronger scoring the last two points of the game to secure their victory.
Scorers: Joey Twomey 1-5 (0-4 frees), Peter O’Hagan 1-0, Barry Twomey 0-2, Patrick Fitzgerald, Willie Walsh and David Farrell 0-1 each.

Panel: Eamonn Dalton, Keith Deasy, Ronan O’Sullivan, Peter O’Hagan, Craig Dowling, David Breen, David Farrell, Eoin Casey, Donal Barron, Joey Twomey, Patrick Fitzgerald, Willie Walsh, Darren Casey, Barry Twomey, Adam Doyle, Graham Butler.

Gaultier 2-9 De La Salle 1-11

Our senior footballers suffered a heartbreaking one point defeat to Gaultier in a hard fought and entertaining game in Walsh Park last Sunday. A good second half performance was not enough to secure a result against the more experienced Gaultier side and we now find ourselves in a relegation dogfight. In fairness to our lads a draw was probably a fair result but it was not to be.

We had first use of the wind and got off to the worst possible start when the referee awarded a penalty against us in the second minute which was duly converted. Points from Mitchell Casey and Patrick Kennedy saw us trail by the minimum after ten minutes before Gaultier pointed a free in the 12th minute. We got a boost in the 14th minute when Lee Hayes’ high ball broke and was finished to the net by Colm Morris to put us ahead for the first time. Ian Cantwell followed with an excellent point in the 18th minute. Gaultier then scored four points in a row before Ian Cantwell pointed again to leave us trailing 1-5 to 1-4 at half time.

Resuming against the wind we scored three points in the first five minutes when Ian Cantwell scored from a free before Mitchell Casey and Ian Cantwell added points from play. Gaultier replied with a point from a free before points from Colm Morris and Mitchell Casey had us ahead 1-9 to 1-6 midway through the half. Gaultier reduced the margin in the 16th minute with a point and three minutes later they goaled to lead by a point. Our lads battled back and points by Colm Morris and Lee Hayes put us back in front with six minutes to go but Gaultier finished the stronger with two late points securing their victory.

Scorers: Colm Morris 1-2, Ian Cantwell 0-4 (0-1free), Mitchell Casey 0-3, Patrick Kennedy andLee Hayes 0-1 each.

Panel: David Dennison, David Kennedy, Colm Clancy, Christopher Sheehan (captain), Oran Keevers, Thomas Kearney, Stephen Dalton,Jack Kennedy, Ian Cantwell, David Greene,Mitchell Casey, Stephen Walsh, Colm Morris, Lee Hayes, Patrick Kennedy, Conan Watt, Paudie Nevin, Kenneth Byrne, Martin Sheehan, Patrick Flynn, David Breen, Michael Roche, Adam Deegan.

De La Salle 2-10 Clashmore 2-5
Our junior footballers had their second win in the championship when they defeated Clashmore in Gracedieu last Friday in what was a well contested game with the result in doubt up to the final minutes of the game. It was over two months since our last game and with seven of that team unavailable this was a very credible result.
We opened the scoring straight away with Graham Butler pointing and the outstanding Joey Twomey added another in the fourth minute. Clashmore opened their account with a point in the 10th minute and followed with a goal a minute later. However, we replied immediately with Graham Butler and Barry Twomey creating the chance for Joey Twomey to finish to the net. A pointed free for Clashmore saw the sides level 1-2 each at the end of the first quarter. The next score came in the 23rd minute when the excellent Conan Watt pointed but two late Clashmore points saw them lead 1-4 to 1-3 at the break.
Clashmore resumed by adding another point in the third minute but we then got on top and between the fifth and seventeenth minutes we scored six unanswered points from Joey Twomey (3) and one each from Conan Watt, Barry Twomey and Keith Deasy to lead 1-9 to 1-5. Clashmore struck for a goal in the 22nd minute but a minute later Conan Watt created a goal chance for Barry Twomey to convert and Conan then ended the scoring in the 31st minute when he pointed to secure the victory.
Scorers: Joey Twomey 1-4, Barry Twomey 1-1, Conan Watt 0-3, Graham Butler and Keith Deasy 0-1 each.
Panel: Jamie Coady, James Coad, David Farrell, Darren Casey, Peter O’Hagan, Alan Fitzgerald, Barry Murphy, Adam O’Sullivan, Eoin Casey, Joey Twomey, Conan Watt, Micheál Kavanagh, Willie Walsh, Barry Twomey, Graham Butler, Ronan O’Sullivan, Keith Deasy.

De La Salle 2-19 Abbeyside 2-17

Our senior hurlers defeated Abbeyside in the Sargent Cup in Kill last Friday night in an open and entertaining game between two understrength sides. After a close first half we dominated the third quarter and opened up a seven point lead but Abbeyside came back and could have snatched a draw at the end.

Points from Adam Farrell and John Mullane gave us an early lead but by the tenth minute we trailed 0-5 to 0-2. Points from Dean Twomey, John Keane and John Mullane had us level before Jamie Sage struck in the 14th minute for a goal. Three points had Abbeyside level by the 20th minute. A double exchange of points involving two excellent strikes by John Mullane had it 1-7 to 0-10 with five minutes left. Brian Cunningham regained the lead before Abbeyside goaled. We finished the half strongly with Adam Farrell, Jamie Sage and John Keane all pointing to see us lead 1-11 to 1-10 at half time.

We began the second half well with Brian Cunningham (2) and John Keane pointing. Abbeyside scored twice either side of a John Mullane point to make it 1-15 to 1-12 after eight minutes. We were on top a this stage as Brian Cunningham, Bryan Phelan, John Keane and David Greene all added further points to leave us ahead 1-19 to 1-12 midway through the half. Abbeyside pointed in the 17th minute and followed with a goal in the 25th minute to reduce the margin to three points. A minute later Brian Cunningham set up Evan Whelan for our second goal and the points looked secure. However, Abbeyside responded with four points to narrow the gap but we held out in the additional minutes.

Scorers: John Mullane 0-5, John Keane and Brian Cunningham (frees) 0-4 each, Jamie Sage 1-1, Evan Whelan 1-0, Adam Farrell 0-2, Dean Twomey, Bryan Phelan and David Greene 0-1 each.

Kilrossanty 3-9 De La Salle 2-4

A poor first half performance meant this game was more or less over at the interval. Our recent lack of football activity was very evident in that half as we strugled with our passing and kicking throughout. Kilrossanty opened the scoring in the second minute with a point and we were thankful to keeper David Dennison for two brilliant one on one saves from county star Paul Whyte before Kilrossanty added further points in the 16th and 18th minutes. They finished the half strongly with goals in the 22nd and 26th minutes and pointed in between to lead 2-4 to 0-0 at the break. They pointed again six minutes into the second half before David Kennedy finally opened our account in the eight after we had kicked another three wides. A minute later Lee Hayes pointed but Kilrossanty replied with a goal and two points to lead 3-7 to 0-2 after thirteen minutes. Lee Hayes and Mitchell Casey from a free after Stephen Dalton was fouled reduced the arreaers. We goaled in the 22nd minute when David Kennedy’s high ball saw James Grogan rise above the keeper to punch to the net. Kilrossanty added two points before Mitchell Casey ended the scoring when he goaled from the penalty spot after Colm Morris was grounded by the keeper as he went round him.

Scorers: Mitchell Casey 1-1 (1-0 penalty, 0-1free), James Grogan 1-0, Lee Hayes 0-2, David Kennedy 0-1.

De La Salle 3-4 Ballygunner 3-7

On Wednesday we suffered a narrow 3 point defeat to unbeaten and tabletoppers Ballygunner away in the last game of our U-11 campaign. We started brightly and got the first goal of the game from debutant Conor Keane and finished the first half ahead after an excellent battling performance. Ballygunner came at us at the start of the second half but we held firm and kept our lead midway through the second half. Two late goals from Ballygunner however nudged them ahead going into the closing minutes and they held on for the win. We did have a couple of chances at the end but unfortunately no score materialised. This was though a great performance from the lads and a game which they didn’t deserve to lose. This now concludes our U-11 campaign. In the 6 games we played, we won 2 and lost 4 of which the losing margins were 3 points, 2 points and 2 games by a point. In what was a very tight and competitive league, we competed well and were not found wanting in any game. We are now taking a break, so to everyone, enjoy and see you all in August.

Scorers: Josh Kelly 1-1, Conor O’Shea 0-0, Conor Keane 2-0, Josh Duggan 0-1.

    • U-14 Feile Football

Our U-14 footballers won their division of the national Feile Peil na nOg played at different venues in Connacht the weekend before last. We were hosted by St. Patricks Dromahair for the weekend and the hospitality and the support from our hosts was truly exceptional. We are indebted to them for their generosity and support and it was this support that really made the weekend.

We played our first game in Carrick on Shannon on Friday against Leitrim Gaels and emerged victorious on a score of 4-8 to 0-4. We then had a second game that evening at the same venue against St. Kevins from Louth. This was probably one of the toughest games in the competition but we managed to win on a score of 1-4 to 0-4. We then travelled to our host club to sample their exceptional hospitality.

    Saturday

On Saturday we played our host club and a couple of late goals put the gloss on a tough game on a score of 3-6 to 1-2. We were now qualified for the quarter finals of the cup competition. It was back to Carrick on Shannon to play Miltown Malbay of Clare. This was a very good game of football between two very committed sides. We eventually managed to convert the chances that came our way to qualify for the semi-final on a score of 1-5 to 0-4. It was back to Dromahair for more hospitality.

    Sunday

We had Tyrone opposition in the form of Rock St. Patricks in Claremorris as semi-final opponents. At this stage our lads were beginning to play really well and we beat very good quality opposition on a score of 3-4 to 1-3. We were now in the final in the Connacht GAA centre against St Bridgets of Leitrim.
The lads continued to their good form and a really good performance in the final saw us capture the cup on a score of 5-5 to 0-5. De La Salle 5-15 St. Carthages 3-8

Our minor hurlers got the defence of their county title off to a good start when they defeated a young St. Carthages side in Gracedieu last Wednesday. This was a a good display by our lads with all their total bar one point coming from play but the concession of two poor goals gives cause for concern. However, our attacking play was enjoyable to watch with team captain Brian Cunningham, Shane Ryan and Michael Roche especially prominent on the scoresheet.

The game began with an excellent goal by St. Carthages but goals by Brian Cunningham and Thomas Douglas helped us lead 2-2 to 1-2 at the end of the first quarter. A second goal from Brian Cunningham had us ahead 3-5 to 1-2 after twenty minutes. From there to the break St. Carthages took over and the lead was reduced to 3-6 to 2-5 by the short whistle. Two early points second half points reduced our lead to two but five points from Shane Ryan and a goal from Michael Roche helped us to lead 4-12 to 2-7 midway through the half. Our fifth goal came in the 17th minute when Eddie Meaney’s diagonal ball found Cormac McCann who sped away and finished to the net. Brian Cunningham(2), Michael Roche and Shane Ryan added points and we led 5-16 to 2-7 with five minutes to go. A late rally by St. Carthages yielded 1-1.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 2-4, Shane Ryan 0-6 (0-1 free), Michael Roche 1-2, Thomas Douglas and Cormac McCann 1-0 each, Eddie Meaney, Jack Laffan, Evan Whelan and Conor Dalton 0-1 each.

Panel: Jamie Roche, Evan Deegan, Adam Doyle, Lee Wall, Craig Dowling, Jack McCarthy, Jeff Cahill, Eddie Meaney, Gavin Coppinger, Michael Roche, Brian Cunningham, Jack Laffan, Thomas Douglas, Shane Ryan, Evan Whelan, Conor Dalton, Cormac McCann, Mikey Costigan, James Stone, Sean Carton.

    • Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs East Intermediate Hurling Championship

De La Salle 2-11 Ferrybank 0-17

An injury time free rescued a draw for Ferrybank in this game which they should have had the win secured. It was a game in which we struggled particularly in the first half in which two goals from Colm Morris against the run of play kept us in contention but credit to our lads for battling throughout. This result means that anything other than a win in our back match against St. Saviours will see us exit the championship.
Ferrybank were on top from the start and led 0-4 to 0-1 after ten minutes with our score coming from a Brian Cunningham free after Colm Morris was fouled. The next five minutes saw an improvement as we added points from Lee Hayes and Eddie Meaney. In between we had a penalty saved after a foul on Eddie Meaney. Ferrybank regained control and four unanswered points saw them lead 0-8 to 0-3 with ten minutes to the break. Colm Morris goaled in the 22nd minute but Ferrybank replied with a point. Colm Morris then got his second goal after good work by Jamie Sage to level matters but Ferrybank pointed again to lead 0-10 to 2-3 at the interval.

Colm Morris pointed to equalise three minutes in to the second half. A minute later Ferrybank should have goaled but Martin Sheehan got back to save on the goal line. Ferrybank then scored three consecutive points and also missed another goal chance when somehow one of their forwards managed to kick the sliotar off the upright from in front of the goal. A double exchange of points involving Brian Cunningham, after a foul on Lee Hayes, and Thomas Kearney saw us trail 0-15 to 2-6 midway through the half. With Eddie Meaney now dominating in midfield we scored four points, two from Eddie and two frees from Brian Cunningham to lead for the first time with five minutes to go. Ferrybank equalised immediately from a free but Brian Cunningham regained the lead after Lee Hayes was fouled before Ferrybank got their deserved equaliser
Scorers: Colm Morris 2-1, Brian Cunningham 0-5 (frees), Eddie Meaney 0-3, Lee Hayes and Thomas Kearney 0-1 each.
Panel: Kyle Sinnott, Martin Sheehan, David Sutton, Adam Doyle, Christopher Sheehan, Kenneth Byrne, Patrick Kennedy, Tom Moran, Lee Hayes, Eoin Casey, Thomas Kearney, Eddie Meaney, Brian Cunningham, Colm Morris, Jamie Sage, Michael Roche, Jack McCarthy, Evan Whelan, Jeff Cahill.
