    • East U-16 Hurling Final

De La Salle 4-9 Mount Sion 1-9

After a couple of false starts, this year’s U-16 Eastern Hurling Final took place in Walsh Park on Saturday last. On soft ground it was always going to be a battle to the end and so it proved. An early Conor Dunphy point and Luke Walsh goal gave us an early advantage. Mount Sion fought back through points of their own and looked dangerous throughout the whole game.

We led 1-4 to 0-5 at half time but an early second half goal for Mount Sion brought the score back to the minimum and it proved to be a much needed wake up call for our lads. A Thomas Douglas double and a goal from Sean Power gave us a nine point winning margin in the end. It’s been an incredible journey through the juvenile ranks for this team winning five eastern titles, three county titles and representing Waterford at the 2012 Feile.

Thanks to all the mentors and backroom team that made these achievements possible and a special thanks to the families for supporting this team throughout the years. This group now look forward to competing in the adult ranks and here’s hoping that they will pick up some more silverware along the way.

Gaultier 5-6 De La Salle 0-2

Twenty four hours later it was back to Walsh Park where most of the same team took on Gaultier in the U-16 football final and we were eventually well beaten by a very good side. Minus Conor Giles Doran and Sean Carton through illness, the lads put in a spirited first half display but failed to take their chances and we trailed 0-2 to 0-1 at the interval. The second half was all Gaultier and they ran out worthy winners. Congratulations to Gaultier on their victory and thank to our mentors for their efforts.

    • East U-21 Hurling Championship Semi Final

Roanmore 4-13 De La Salle 2-17 (after extra time)
Our U-21 hurlers exited the championship when we went down to Roanmore after a great battle in Carriganore last Sunday. The unavailability of two senior defenders Stephen Dalton and Adam O’Sullivan proved costly on the day as did the concession of goals at the end of normal and extra time.
However, it must be said that from our point of view the game should never have had to go to extra time as Roanmore profitted from a dreadful piece of refereeeing to score an equalising goal in injury time. Leading by three points we appeared to have weathered the strong Roanmore storm when Jake Dillon gathered possesion in the middle of the field but was clearly dragged back by a hurley around his neck and possession was lost. The whistle we expected for the free which could have put us four clear never sounded and seconds later the ball was in our net. The referee appeared to suggest afterwards that he was trying to play an advantage but we certainly gained no advantage. In fairness this was a well contested game all through and full credit to Roanmore for coming back twice and we wish them well in the final.
The game had a whirlwind start when Jake Dillon opened the scoring with a point and Roanmore goaling from the restart. Immediately Jamie Roche’s puckout was won by Eddie Meaney who found Jake Dillon who set up Jamie Sage for a goal. 1-1 to 1-0 after ninety seconds. Roanmore then hit three points in a row by the fifth minute before points from Jake Dillon and Shane Ryan in the 12th and 14th minuts levelled matters. Roanmore pointed twice in the 15th and 17th minutes but we replied with four in a row from Brian Cunningham (2), Jake Dillon and Robert Daniels to lead 1-7 to 1-5 with five minutes to the break. Two minutes later we got our second goal when great work by Jamie Sage created the chance for Robert Daniels to goal and points from Shane Ryan and Adam Farrell saw us lead 2-9 to 1-5 at half time.
The second half began with Roanmore pointing twice before Shane Ryan replied from a free. Two more Roanmore points either side of one from Adam Farrell had it 2-11 to 1-9 midway through the half. A shot from Shane Ryan in the 17th minute led to a disagreement between the referee’s two umpires with the referee eventually coming down on Roanmore’s side and giving a wide. A minute later Brian Cunningham stretched our lead but Roanmore replied in the 20th minute. A second Roanmore goal in the 22nd minute re-ignited their challenge but they hit a few wides before Jake Dillon stretched our lead to three in the 29th minute. Then came that late goal and we faced extra time with the score at 2-13 to 3-10.
Shane Ryan opened the scoring in the third minute and we then had reason to be grateful to Jack McCarthy who prevented a certain goal a minute later. An exchange of points involving Shane Ryan followed before Robert Daniels was dragged down as he went goalwards with Shane Ryan pointing the resultant penalty to make it 2-16 to 3-11 at the break. Roanmore received a boost five minutes into the second half when a shot for a point triggered another umpiring disagreement and once again the Ballygunner official came down on their side and awarded a point. They immediately equalised but Jake Dillon put us back in front with three minutes to go. A minute later came the winning goal when a long range delivery was deflected to the net from close range. Just before the final whistle sounded one of our players was red carded to compound a disappointing day.
We would like to thank the players and the mentors Bryan Phelan, Barry Murphy, Thomas Kearney, Martin Doyle, Peter Hearne and Joe Kenny (first aid) for their efforts over the last two years.
Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-6 (frees), Jake Dillon 0-5 (0-3 frees), Robert Daniels 1-1, Brian Cunningham 0-3 (0-1 free), Jamie Sage 1-0, Adam Farrell 0-2.
Panel: Jamie Roche, Adam Doyle, Jack McCarthy, Craig Dowling, Michael Roche, Shane McNulty, Tom Moran, Adam Farrell, Eddie Meaney, Brian Cunningham, Patrick Flynn, Jake Dillon, Shane Ryan, Robert Daniels, Jamie Sage, Evan Whelan, Jeff Cahill, Daragh Fitzpatrick.

    • East U-21 Hurling Championship Quarter Final

De La Salle 4-18 Clann na Gael 2-9
Our U-21 hurlers qualified for the eastern semi final when we had a comfortable victory over Clann na Gael in Killlast Saturday. We were the bettter balanced side and were always in control thanks to three first half goals. Clann na Gael battled hard throughout to make a game of it but didn’t have the scoring power we had on the day.
We opened the scoring with early points from Brian Cunningham and Shane Ryan. Clann na Gael pointed in the fourth minute but a minute later we had our first goal when Jake Dillon and Robert Daniels set up man of the match Jamie Sage who finished excellently. An exchange of point involving Jamie Sage followed and in the 10th minute we were in for our second goal when Robert Daniels finished to the net after the keeper had saved from Jamie Sage to make it 2-3 to 0-2. Both teams added two points each with ours coming from Shane Ryan and Brian Cunningham before we got our third goal in the 23rd minute when Robert Daniels netted again after the keeper had originally saved his effort and and a follow up attempt from Jamie Sage. Shane Ryan added three points to one in reply before our opponents goaled in injury time to see us lead 3-8 to 1-5 at half time.

The second half began with Shane Ryan pointing two frees. Clann na Gael replied with a point. Shane McNulty and Shane Ryan (free) added further points. Clann na Gael then pointed twice but these were cancelled out by points from Jamie Sage and Shane McNulty (free) to make it 3-14 to 1-8 midway through the half. Shane Ryan then added two more points from frees before Clann na Gael replied with a pointed free and followed with a 22nd minute goal to make it 3-16 to 2-9. Robert Daniels scored a fine point with five minutes left and then Evan Whelan who had just been introduced pointed and then in injury time he added our fourth goal after good work by Adam O’Sullivan and Jamie Sage.
We now play Roanmore next Saturday in Walsh Park in the semi final at a time to be confirmed.
Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-10 (0-7 frees), Robert Daniels 2-1, Jamie Sage 1-2, Evan Whelan 1-1, Brian Cunningham and Shane McNulty (0-1 free) 0-2 each.

    • Allianz Cumann na mBunscol U-13 Football Final.

Our U-13 footballers faced Scoil Lorcáin in the final of the League at Walsh Park on Tuesday October 21st. We played with the aid of the gale force wind in the first half and by the tenth minute we were 3 points to nil up, Conor O’Shea converting two frees and Owen Oseni kicking a point from play. Scoil Lorcáin pressed hard but our half back line of Evan Hayes, Cian Purcell and Seán Doocey played very well throughout. By the sixteenth minute we had extended our lead to 7 points to nil. Conor O’Shea having added three more points from frees and team captain Alex Brown had a long range point from play. Half time St. Declan’s 0-7 Scoil Lorcáin 0-0

Wind assisted Scoil Lorcáin began the second half in lightning fashion when they had the ball in the back of our net inside the first minute. Our lead was cut to three points when our opponents scored a point from a free. We managed a few breakaway attacks during this half but the Scoil Lorcáin defense held firm. However Ronan Power scored a very important point when he fisted over the bar in the twelfth minute. This was our only score of the half.

We were now four points up entering the last ten minutes of the game. We were under severe pressure at this stage, goalkeeper Conor Cummins and our full back line of Conor Murphy, Luke Underwood Doyle and Alex Hoban Maguire were heroic in defense. Disaster struck with five minutes remaining when a long delivery ended up in the back of the net. Scoil Lorcáin threw everything at us but we managed to cling on and ran out winners by a single point. St. Declan’s 0-8 Scoil Lorcáin 2-1

We now await the County Final next month which will be played at an Eastern venue.

Panel: Conor Cummins, Conor Murphy, Luke Underwood Doyle, Alex Hoban Maguire, Sean Doocey, Cian Purcell, Evan Hayes, Ronan Power, Alex Browne Captain, Jay Hearne, Owen Oseni, Victory Eddy-Atu, Kieran Kennedy, Aaron Wymberry, Conor O’Shea, Darragh O’Keeffe, Darragh Treacy, Cathal Power, Eoin Hearne, Ryan McCarthy, Mark Breen, Cian Troy, Conor Fanning.

    • County U-16 Hurling Final

De La Salle 2-14 St. Carthages 1-13

Congratulations to our U-16 hurling team who were deservedly crowned county champions in Fraher Field on Saturday last. St. Carthages aided by a strong breeze opened the scoring inside the first minute with a well taken goal and went on to take control of the game. Thomas Douglas opened our account after ten minutes and added a further two points mid-way through the half. Shaun O’Brien then pulled off an instinctive save as he stuck his boot out to prevent a certain goal. James Stone pointed just before the break to leave us trailing 1-5 to 0-4 at half time. Within four minutes of the restart we drew level through a Micky Costigan free and a wonderfully taken goal by Cormac McCann. We hit the front soon after through points from Conor Giles Doran and Luke Walsh. Thomas Douglas then found the net and from there we set a platform for victory. St. Carthages knocked over some well taken frees but it wasn’t enough as our lads secured a memorable victory. Each member of the panel have put in a massive effort since last March and thankfully got their reward on Saturday. Thanks to Pat, Stevie, Peter, Jamie and Johann (first aid) for their commitment throughout the year and to all the supporters who have followed this team year in year out. • Sargent Cup Senior Hurling League Semi Final

Lismore 3-12 De La Salle 1-17

We exited the Sargent Cup last Saturday in Abbeyside when we went down to Lismore in a game that was used to give a run to any of our U-21 hurlers that were available prior to the commencement of that championship next weekend. With Eoin Casey the only player over 21 it was a useful workout but also a game we should have won only for the concession of two bad goals in three second half minutes.

Lismore had first use of the strong wind and scored four points in the first five minutes. A point from Adam Farrell and three from Shane Ryan had it 0-4 each after ten minutes. Lismore then hit six points in a row in six minutes before Shane Ryan pointed in the 17th minute. However, Lismore goaled a minute later and we looked in trouble. Points from Brian Cunningham, Shane Ryan (2) and Adam Farrell reduced the arrears and we trailed 1-10 to 0-9 at half time.
We began the second half with a long range point from Shane Ryan inside the first minute before he was forced to retire. We were level in the eight minute when Robert Daniels dispossessed the Lismore goalkeeper and Jamie Sage sent a ground stroke to the net. Jake Dillon put us ahead a minute late but Lismore equalised in the 11th minute.

Points from Jake Dillon (2) and Brian Cunningham put us three ahead by the 17th minute but a minute later Lismore goaled from a clearance after we wasted a chance to go further ahead with a weak shot into the goalkeeper’s arms. Jeff Cahill restored our lead immediately but we then conceded another goal to trail 3-11 to 1-15 with ten minutes left. Points from Jeff Cahill and Jake Dillon in the 21st and 22nd minutes levelled matters and there was no further score until the 30th minute when Lismore pointed what proved to be the winner.

Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-7 (0-5 frees), Jake Dillon 0-4 (0-1 free), Jamie Sage 1-0, Adam Farrell, Brian Cunningham and Jeff Cahill 0-2 each.

St. Stephen’s v Holy Cross, Tramore: We travelled to Tramore and contested a very good, close game of football. We started well with a goal from Sean Burke. Tramore came back with a couple of points but Darragh Crowe scored another goal to keep us ahead at half-time. Both teams exchanged points but then Tramore scored two quick goals to win on a scoreline: St
A draw was made as the three teams in the group all ended on level points. Holy Cross were drawn to advance automatically to the semi-final and Ballygunner and ourselves had to have a play-off in Ballygunner.

    Ballygunner 3-3 St Stephen’s 0-3.

Ballygunner v St Stephen’s: This was a very close, exciting game. We had an awful start and were two goals down in as many minutes. However, we began to settle and had Ballygunner under pressure but couldn’t score putting the ball everywhere but in the net. At half-time it was Ballygunner 2-3, St Stephens 0-0.We were far better in the second half and started taking our points, scoring three in a few minutes. • County Minor Hurling Final

Dungarvan 1-13 De La Salle 0-13
There was disappointment for our minor hurlers when they went under to favourites Dungarvan in an excellent county final in Fraher Field last Sunday evening. Both team can take great credit in the way they played this game with Dungarvan emerging worthy winners of what was an always sporting and absorbing encounter.
We started well with Shane Ryan pointing twice in the opening four minutes. Dungarvan then got into the game and pointed in the 10th, 12th and 13th minutes. Then disaster struck when the after the third point the puck out went astray and Dungarvan goaled. Our lads replied with two points from the excellent Thomas Douglas in the 14th and 18th minutes. Dungarvan got two of their own in the 23rd and 24th minutes before Cormac McCann replied for us a minute later. Evan Whelan added another in the 28th minute but Dungarvan cancelled it out two minutes later. Eddie Meaney pointed in injury time after a fine run to leave us trailing 1-6 to 0-7 at half time.
The second half began with Brian Cunningham pointing a free inside the first minute after a foul on Eddie Meaney. Dungarvan pointed in the fourth minute and two minutes later another foul on Eddie Meaney saw Shane Ryan point to leave us behind by the minimum. However this would be as close as we would come as Dungarvan pointed twice in the seventh and ninth minutes. Shane Ryan pointed a sixty five in the 10th minute after the keeper saved a goalbound shot from Thomas Douglas but Dungarvan replied immediately to make it 1-10 to 0-10 after forty one minutes. There followed seven scoreless minutes as both teams battled away. With Eddie Meaney restricted through injury we struggled in attack even though three times in the last quarter we reduced the gap to two points but each time Dungarvan came back to make it three and secured the title.
We congratulate Dungarvan on their victory and say thanks to our team mentors Owen Dunphy, Alan ‘Jack’ Duggan, John Mullane and Richie Cunningham for their efforts over the last two years. Thanks also to Joe Kenny and Mitchell Casey who were on first aid duty.
Scorers: Shane Ryan (0-2 frees, 0-2 ’65s) and Brian Cunningham (frees) 0-4 each, Thomas Douglas 0-2, Cormac McCann, Evan Whelan and Eddie Meaney 0-1 each.

    • County U-16 Hurling

Two wins within 48 hours booked a place in this year’s county final for our U-16 hurlers. A 3-14 to 1-4 win against Mount Sion under lights in Carriganore on Thursday set up a semi-final away to Ballygunner on Saturday last. The Gunners raced into a 7 point lead mid-way through the first half but a well worked Thomas Douglas goal and a Luke Walsh point left us trailing by 3 points at the break. Goals from Luke Walsh and Chris Kong put us in the lead for the first time and gave us the cushion we needed coming into the last quarter. Ballygunner fought right to the end but we ran out 3-10 to 0-15 winners. The team would like to thank all those who came out to show their support over both games. We now meet a much fancied Lismore team on the 18th of October in Fraher Field.

    • Sean Treacy

The past week saw the passsing of Sean Treacy a former player and mentor with the club and father of our current senior hurling selector Donal Treacy. Sean’s grandsons Eoin, Daire, Sean and Conor are underage players in the club.
During his playing days Sean won a county minor medal at the age of 14. He also won the old street leagues with St. Patricks. He then went on and won a Munster U-161/2 Munster colleges medal with De La Salle college. Sean also represented his county at underage level. He won a county junior medal in 1954 while still young.
Sean was well known in St. Declans school where he coached many young lads in the yard and he was a selector in our first U-14 team to qualify to represent Waterford at national Feile na nGael in 1998. This team which were county champions the same year and won two U-16 county titles in 1999 and 2000 were the pioneers of our many underage successess which ultimately led to our recent senior triumphs. He then moved on and was a selector on our junior and intermediate teams. Unfortunatly illness ultimately ended his active participation in the club. There was a large attendance of past and present club members at the removal and funeral who formed a guard of honour outside the church.
We extend our deepest sympathy to his family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

    • County Minor Hurling Semi Final

De La Salle 2-17 Passage 0-12
Our minor hurlers hopes of back to back county titles are still alive after they beat Passage in the semi final in Walsh Park last Sunday. This was a game in which both sides went in with hopes of progressing with Passage having emerged unbeaten from their league games, which included a three point win over our lads in Gracedieu, slight favourites but our lads played very well on the day and even though winning was not considered a surprise the margin was certainly unexpected.

Passage opened the scoring in the first minute with a point but we got a boost a minute later when Evan Whelan, Shane Ryan and Jack Laffan combined for Cormac McCann to goal. Points from Eddie Meaney and a Brian Cunningham free, after Shane Ryan was fouled going through, stretched our lead. Passage replied with a point but two further points from Cormac McCann and Eddie Meaney had us ahead 1-4 to 0-2 midway through the half. An exchange of points involving the excellent Thomas Douglas followed before Passage hit two in a row to make it 1-5 to 0-5 after twenty three minutes. We then hit four unanswered points from Thomas Douglas (2), Cormac McCann and Brian Cunningham (free) before Passage pointed an injury time free to see us lead 1-9 to 0-6 at half time.

The second half began with our lads dominating and points from Thomas Douglas and Shane Ryan increased our lead. We missed a couple of possible goal chances before we got a stroke of luck in the 10th minute when Michael Roche’s sixty five went all the way to the net. Passage replied with a pointed free a minute later but we were now in control and points from Eddie Meaney, Brian Cunningham (2), Evan Whelan and Thomas Douglas made it 2-16 to 0-7 with six minutes left. Passage showed their character by continuing to battle and scored five points in five minutes before Evan Whelan pointed in injury time to close the scoring.
We now play the winners of the Ballygunner/Dungarvan replay in the final on a date yet to be confirmed.

Scorers: Thomas Douglas 0-5, Cormac McCann 1-2, Brian Cunningham 0-4 (0-2 frees), Eddie Meaney 0-3, Michael Roche 1-0 (’65), Evan Whelan 0-2, Shane Ryan 0-1 (free).

Panel: Sean O’Brien, Conor Hogan, Jack McCarthy, Lee Wall, Michael Roche, Adam Doyle, Craig Dowling, Brian Cunningham, Gavin Coppinger, Thomas Douglas, Eddie Meaney, Jack Laffan, Cormac McCann, Shane Ryan, Evan Whelan, Conor Dunphy, Evan Deegan, Jeff Cahill, James Stone, Jamie Roche, Mikey Costigan, David Hogan.

    • County Senior Football Quarter Final

An Rinn 0-18 De La Salle 0-6
Our senior footballers made the expected exit from this year’s championship when we were well beaten by An Rinn in Fraher Field last Friday night. It was a game in which we were outplayed comprehensively for the first twenty minutes before tactical changes improved matters on the field but the damage was already done by then on the scoreboard and the result was decided well before the finish.

The game began with An Rinn pointing in the first and fifth minutes. We then had a chance to take the lead when Kevin Moran set up a goal chance for David Kennedy but the goalkeeper made an excellent save at the expense of a fruitless ’45. At this stage we were struggling to deal with the runners coming from deep positions and between the 13th and 20th minutes An Rinn added six unanswered points to lead 0-8 to 0-0. At this stage it was decided to deploy David Kennedy as an extra defender and shortly afterwards Ian Cantwell opened our account after a fine run from midfield. An Rinn added two further points before Mitchell Casey replied with two frees in the 24th and 28th minutes. An Rinn ended the first half scoring from a free in the 33rd minute to leave us trailing 0-11 to 0-3 at half time.
An Rinn dominated possession in the third quarter but solid defensive work limited them to three points in the 6th, 7th and 14th minutes. Mitchell Casey pointed a free in the 15th minute after Paudie Nevin was fouled to make it 0-14 to 0-4. An exchange of points followed involving a Mitchell Casey free after David Kennedy was fouled before An Rinn added three points to their tally in three minutes. Ian Cantwell ended the scoring when he kicked his second excellent point from play.

Whereas the margin of defeat was disappointing the lads can be happy to have achieved their goal of retaining senior status and reaching a quarter final in their first year up.
Thanks to the players and the team mentors Seamus Quirke, Jackie Dunne, Jim Keevers and John Cummins for all their work to retain senior status. Thanks also to Jason Ryan who took a few of the training sessions and to the physios and backroom team for their efforts.

Scorers: Mitchell Casey 0-4 (frees), Ian Cantwell 0-2.

Panel: David Dennison, Martin Sheehan, Colm Clancy, Christopher Sheehan, Oran Keevers, Thomas Kearney, Stephen Dalton, Ian Cantwell, David Greene, Colm Morris, Lee Hayes, Kevin Moran, David Kennedy, Mitchell Casey, Patrick Kennedy, Paudie Nevin, Patrick Flynn, James Grogan, David Breen, Conan Watt, Eamonn Dalton, Eoin Madigan, Peter O’Hagan.

    U-13 Football V Ballygunner

We had a great one point victory over Ballygunner in Cleaboy on Thursday September 18th. This was a titanic, up and down the field game. We had a great start with Reuben Halloran scoring a couple of early points, followed by one from Shane O’Neill and a goal from Sean Burke. Our backs, especially Dylan, Sultan and Ose performed heroics in the second half against a strong wind, preventing a goal being scored. This was a great game between two very evenly matched teams. Well done to all on the panel.

    • County Senior Hurling Semi Final

Mount Sion 2-17 De La Salle 0-16
Our senior hurlers made their exit from the championship when we went down to Mount Sion in Walsh Park on Saturday. This was a game in which we struggled to hit any sort of form and we only scored 0-8 from play. Still, we were in the game with a chance up to the final ten minutes when our opponents hit 0-6 without reply to emerge deserving winners.
Mount Sion made the better start and led 0-5 to 0-2 after ten minutes with our scores coming from Jake Dillon and John Keane. Three points in a row from Jake Dillon, John Mullane and Paudie Nevin levelled matters by the midway point. A double exchange of points involving Jake Dillon and Eoin Madigan saw it still level in the 21st minute. Two frees from Jake Dillon put us two up but Mount Sion struck back with two of their own to make it all square at the interval 0-9 each.
We began the second half with Kevin Moran, who was struggling with flu, in the full forward line and we suffered another blow when Mount Sion goaled in the first minute. Fouls on Eoin Madigan and Kevin Moran saw Jake Dillon reduce the arrears to the minimum but Mount Sion hit back with a second goal in the sixth minute. They added another point in the eight minute. We then had a goal chance in the 10th minute but Eoin Madigan’s shot was well saved and Jake Dillon pointed the resultant sixty five. Mount Sion made it 2-11 to 0-12 a minute later. We then had a spell of dominance and points from Jake Dillon (2), John Mullane and Paudie Nevin reduced the gap to the minimum again by the 17th minute. However, we hit too many wides and another save by the keeper from Kevin Moran denied us the goal we needed. That was as good as it got as Mount Sion took over to score those six unanswered points.
Congratulation to Mount Sion on their victory and we wish them well in the final.
Thanks to the players and team mentors Allen Dillon, Johnny Walsh, Willie Cleary, Donal Treacy and their backroom team for their efforts this year.
Scorers: Jake Dillon 0-10 (0-7 frees, 0-1 ’65), John Mullane and Paudie Nevin 0-2 each, John Keane and Eoin Madigan 0-1 each.
Panel: John Coady, Oran Keevers, Ian Flynn, Stephen Dalton, Bryan Phelan, Kevin Moran, Shane McNulty, Dean Twomey, David Greene, Paudie Nevin, John Mullane, Jack Kennedy, Jake Dillon, Eoin Madigan, John Keane, Stephen Daniels, Adam Farrell, Eddie Barrett, Jamie Sage, Shane Ryan, Stevie Brenner, Conan Watt, Thomas Kearney, Tom Moran, Patrick Kennedy, Lee Hayes, Brian Cunningham, Eddie Meaney , Adam Doyle, Martin Sheehan, Kyle Sinnott, Eoin Casey, David Sutton, Patrick Flynn, Colm Morris.

    • County U-14 Hurling Semi Final

Abbeyside 2-10 De La Salle 2-6
Our U-14 hurlers exited the championship at the hands of Abbeyside after a tremendous tussle in Abbeyside on Friday last. This was an excellent game of hurling between two excellent sides. Abbeyside started the brighter and led by three points. We responded with two from Aidan Gannon. Abbeyside added a goal and a point before we responded with a goal and a point of our own. This left the minimum between the sides at the break after a tremendous first half. Both sides maintained the same standard but Abbeyside began to take their chances whilst we missed a few. Abbeyside scored a second goal and extended their lead to five. Both sides exchanged a number of points before an excellent Seaghan Walsh goal reduced the arrears to two. The next few minutes produced some tense hurling before Abbeyside added two further points to close the game out.
Congratulations to abbeyside on their victory. While it would have been great to add the county title to our Eastern championship the improvement in this group has been very impressive. Thanks to the team mentors Paudie Brosnan, Billy O’Neill, Peter Galvin, Christy Halloran and Alan Kelly for all their work during the year. Thanks also to Darren Casey for doing the hurleys and to Elsie Clooney for looking after first aid.
Panel: Liam Coad, Ethan O’Halloran, Lorcan Dwyer Sheridan, Dean Casey, Shane O’Neill, Sam Flynn, Tom O’Donnell, Sean Connolly, Kevin Hennessy, Seaghan Walsh, Joshua Campus, Dan Casey, Colm Maher, Dylan Finn, James Cotter, Aidan Gannon, Eamonn Brosnan, Kieran O’Loughlin, Darren Kenneally, Conor Murphy, Rueben O’Halloran, Craig O’Brien, Kalem Walsh, Nathan Finn.

Best of luck to Cappoquin in the County Final. Well done to all our girls, we got to a Minor County B final last year in 2013 and this year we reached an A championship semi final, great progress. • County Minor Hurling Championship

De La Salle 4-17 Roanmore 1-12
Our minor hurlers had a comfortable victory over Roanmore in their Gracedieu grounds last Wednesday and in doing so qualified for the knockout stages as the other challengers for the final spot both lost. In fairness to Roanmore two late goals by our lads made the scoreboard more emphatic and did scant justice to their efforts but we always looked in control throughout. After three narrow defeats in a row it was a relief for the management to get back to winning ways.
Shane Ryan opened the scoring in the second minute with a point but Roanmore replied two minutes later. We then had four points in a row from Brian Cunningham (2), Jack Laffan and Michael Roche before great work by Brian Cunningham, Shane Ryan, Evan Whelan and Cormac McCann set up Thomas Douglas for a goal and we led 1-5 to 0-1 inside the first ten minutes. Two points from Thomas Douglas and Evan Whelan stretched our lead before Roanmore got their second point. Our lads then hit another three points from Evan Whelan (2) and Shane Ryan to lead 1-10 to 0-2 after twenty three minutes. A double exchange of points involving Adam Doyle and Evan Whelan followed before Roanmore scored the last two points of the half to see us lead 1-12 to 0-6 at the break.
Roanmore began the second half with a second minute point but two minutes later Thomas Douglas found Brian Cunningham with an excellent pass and Brian’s finish to the Roanmore net was of the highest quality. Man of the match Douglas added a point before Roanmore rallied with a point and a goal to make it 2-13 to 1-8 at the midway point. Thomas Douglas pointed again but Roanmore replied from a free. Shane Ryan and Brian Cunningham added two more points but Roanmore replied with two of their own to make it 2-16 to 1-11 with five minutes left. Evan Whelan hit over his fifth point of the game but Roanmore responded likewise. Then came that final flourish with goals from Thomas Douglas and Shane Ryan in the 30th and 31st minutes to set us up for a semi final place.
Scorers: Thomas Douglas 2-3, Shane Ryan and Brian Cunningham (0-1 free) 1-3 each, Evan Whelan 0-5, Jack Laffan, Michael Roche and Adam Doyle 0-1 each.
Panel: Sean O’Brien, Conor Hogan, Jack McCarthy, Lee Wall, Adam Doyle, Michael Roche, Craig Dowling, Brian Cunningham, Gavin Coppinger, Jack Laffan, Shane Ryan, Conor Dunphy, Cormac McCann, Thomas Douglas, Evan Whelan, Jeff Cahill, Evan Deegan, James Stone, David Hogan, Mikey Costigan.

    • County Junior Football ‘Senior Attached’ Quarter Final

Gaultier 2-8 De La Salle 1-8
Our junior footballers exited the championship when we were narowly beaten by Gaultier last Saturday in what, to the best of my knowledge, was the first time our club played adult football in Ballygunner’s grounds. This was a game which we felt we left behind us as we had plenty of possession and created lots of chances, but we only scored 1-3 from play on a day in which the absence through injury of top scorer Joey Twomey was keenly felt. Great credit is due to our generally young team who put in a battling performance against a side operating a couple of levels above us for the past few years and it was Gaultier’s greater experience and ability to take their scores was the difference in the end.
We began the game slowly and Gaultier opened the scoring in the second minute. We equalised in the ninth minute when Adam O’Sullivan pointed a free after Patrick Fitzgerald was fouled. A foul on Adam O’Sullivan in the 13th minute saw Donal Barron put us ahead but three minutes later Gaultier scored a goal. Adam O’Sullivan replied with a free in the 21st minute after a foul on Donal Barron and John Kinsella equalised a minute later. Gaultier pointed a free in the 27th minute but we were back in front within a minute when James Grogan and Patrick Fitzgerald combined for Barry Twomey to crash the ball to the roof of the net to see us lead 1-4 to 1-2 at the break.
This game turned in the first three minutes of the second half when first Gaultier pointed and then goaled after we spilled possession near our own goal. Our lads fought back and points from Adam Doyle and Patrick Fitzgerald levelled matters before a Gaultier point put them ahead 2-4 to 1-6 with seven minutes played. There followed twelve scoreless minutes in which poor shooting saw us miss 2-3 and Eamonn Dalton made a full length save from a penalty. Two points in the 19th and 20th minutes stretched Gaultier’s lead to three points. Patrick Fitzgerald from a free reduced the gap to two points before two Gaultier points made it a four point game wit htwo minutes left. Another foul on Patrick Fitzgerald saw Donal Barron reduce the arrears in the 30th minute and we had one last chance in injury time when we won a ’45 which saw David Breen win possesion but his shot which was heading for the top corner was deflected away by a defender at the last minute to secure victory for Gaultier.
Scorers: Barry Twomey 1-0, Adam O’Sullivan (frees), Donal Barron (frees) and Patrick Fitzgerald (0-1 free) 0-2 each, John Kinsella and Adam Doyle 0-1 each.
Panel: Eamonn Dalton, Diarmuid Carey, Ronan O’Sullivan, Adam Doyle, Craig Dowling, David Breen, James Grogan, Alan Fitzgerald, Donal Barron, John Kinsella, Patrick Fitzgerald, Micheál Kavanagh, Darren Casey, Barry Twomey, Adam O’Sullivan, David Farrell, Keith Deasy.

De La Salle 7-12 St. Carthages 0-5
Our U-14 hurlers qualified for the county semi final with a well earned win over St. Carthages at Gracedieu on Saturday last. We opened with a goal by Dylan Finn and St. Carthages replied with a point. However we laid the foundation of our victory in the next ten minutes when we scored 3-7 to 0-2 from St. Carthages We led by 4-7 to 0-3 at half time and in truth despite the valiant efforts of the young St. Carthages team there was only going to be one winner. We added 3-5 in the second half to win comfortably. We now play the favourites Abbeyside on Friday next at their home ground.
    Panel.
