    • County Senior Hurling Quarter Final

De La Salle 1-16 Tallow 2-9

A superb goal from John Keane helped our senior hurlers to a hard fought quarter final victory over Tallow in Fraher Field Park last Friday night. This was a game in which we struggled with our shooting throughout, hitting eighteen wides and in the end were relieved to have made it through to the last four. On a positive note it was great to see Eddie Barrett return to action for the last few minutes.

We began poorly and after eight minutes trailed 0-4 to 0-1 with a Jake Dillon free our only score. Dean Twomey pointed from play in the ninth minute but Tallow got in for a goal in the 15th minute. An exchange of points involving a Jake Dillon free saw us trail 1-5 to 0-3 after twenty minutes. We gained control at this stage and five points in a row from Dean Twomey (2), Adam Farrell, Jake Dillon and John Mullane had us level by the 29th minute. Tallow regained the lead from a free before late points from David Greene and Paudie Nevin saw us ahead 0-10 to 1-6 at the break.

Tallow regained the lead with two early points but Jake Dillon equalised in the fourth minute. In the eight minute the excellent Shane McNulty found John Keane with a pass and John crashed the ball to the net with a brilliant strike. Points from John Keane and Paudie Nevin (2) had us ahead 1-14 to 1-8 after seventeen minutes as our wide count mounted. Tallow ended seventeen scoreless minutes when they pointed in the 19th minute and followed with a goal in the 22nd minute to bring the margin down to two points. John Keane pointed in the 23rd minute and John Mullane made the game safe when he stretched our lead to four in the 29th minute.

We now await the semi final draw knowing we have a lot of improving to do if we are to claim the ultimate prize.

Scorers: John Keane 1-2 (0-1 free), Jake Dillon 0-4 (frees), Dean Twomey and Paudie Nevin 0-3 each, John Mullane 0-2, Adam Farrell and David Greene 0-1 each.

Passage 2-16 De La Salle 3-10

Our minor hurlers were beaten for the third game in a row in close hard fought encounters when Passage deservedly took the points from Gracedieu last Wednesday. We now have two games left and must win both to claim the final semi final place.

Passage opened the scoring within the first minute with a point but we replied when Evan Whelan and Shane Ryan combined for Thomas Douglas to goal. Two points had Pasage level by the eight minute but two minutes later we were back in front when good work by Thomas Douglas resulted in Cormac McCann goaling. Points from Brian Cunningham and Shane Ryan in the 12th and 18th minutes stretched our lead but Passage replied with two of their own and goaled in the 27th minute to level it up. An injury time point by Shane Ryan saw us lead 2-3 to 1-5 at half time.

The second half began with Passage goaling in the second minute to take a lead they were never to lose. They added two points before Cormac McCann replied with one for us. Two more Passage points followed but we responded with one from Conor Dunphy and two frees from Michael Roche. A Passage free saw them lead 2-10 to 2-7 midway through the half. Two frees from Brian Cunningham reduced the gap to the minimum but five points in a row saw Passage ahead 2-15 to 2-9 with four minutes left. Michael Roche hit a point from distance and the gap was down to two points with a minute left when Cormac McCann got his sixth goal in four games. Passage replied with a point in injury time to take the spoils on the night.

Scorers: Cormac McCann 2-1, Brian Cunningham (frees) and Michael Roche (0-2 frees) 0-3 each, Thomas Douglas 1-0, Shane Ryan 0-2, Conor Dunphy 0-1.
