Rathgormack 2-10 De La Salle 2-7

Our understrength senior footballers sponsored by John Kelly Opel went down narrowly to Rathgormack in an entertaining third round championship game played in Carrickbeg last Saturday. Even though defeat was our lot it has to be said that this was probably one of our most spirited performances since achieving senior status but unfortunately we came up a bit short on the night.

Lining out without several players including Oran Keevers, Ian Cantwell, Stephen Walsh, Stephen Dalton, Mitchell Casey and Paddy Kennedy we got off to a great start with two goals in the first two minutes. The first came from Lee Hayes who was on hand to finish to the net when a long range free from Colm Morris came back of the upright. A minute later debutant minor Michael Roche rounded his man and finished low to the net despite being fouled with a good advantage being played. Rathgormack then kicked four points between the seventh and eleventh minutes. Rathgormack pointed again in the 20th minute before Colm Morris replied from a free two minutes later afteer the excellent Conan Watt was fouled. Rathgormack took the lead in the 24th minute when a long free broke inside our backs and was finished to the net. They added a point in injury time to lead 1-6 to 2-1 at the break. We began the second half with points from a Colm Morris free after Michael Roche was fouled and Conan Watt to level matters.

However, Rathgormack were back in front in the eight minute when they got in for their second goal. We were out of luck in the 14th minute when Patrick Flynn beat the keeper but his shot went just outside the far post. Rathgoramck pointed in the 16th minute but Colm Morris replied a minute later after good work by Craig Dowling and Patrick Flynn. Rathgormack pointed a free in the 19th minute and Colm Morris did likewise a minute later after Lee Hayes was fouled. Another exchange of frees involving Colm Morris after Patrick Flynn was fouled saw three points still between the sides with five minutes left. Rathgormack made it a four point game in the 28th minute but Kenneth Byrne brought it back to three with a fine point in the 31st minute. One last attack came to nothing and the final whistle sounded.

Scorers: Colm Morris 0-5 (0-4 frees), Lee Hayes and Michael Roche 1-0 each, Conan Watt and Kenneth Byrne 0-1 each.

Panel: David Dennison, Martin Sheehan, Colm Clancy, Craig Dowling, David Kennedy, Kenneth Byrne, Christopher Sheehan, Thomas Kearney, David Greene, James Coad, Lee Hayes, Colm Morris, Conan Watt, Patrick Flynn, Michael Roche, James Grogan, Eamonn Dalton, Peter O’Hagan, Micheál Kavanagh, Ryan Duke.

Dungarvan 2-20 De La Salle 2-13

Our minor hurlers suffered their first defeat of this year’s campaign when they went down to a better Dungarvan side in Gracedieu last Tuesday. This was a a game which was competitive for the most part but Dungarvan finished with a strong last quarter performance for a deserved win.

Dungarvan opened well and we trailed 0-4 to 0-1 after five minutes with Eddie Meaney on target. We were level by the 11th minute with points from Conor Dunphy, Luke Walsh and Eddie Meaney. Mikey Costigan gave us the lead a minutes later but Dungarvan goaled in the 13th minute. We were fortunate not to concede another goal thanks to some excellent defensive work by Peter Grogan before Dungarvan pointed again to lead 1-5 to 0-5 midway through the half. Both sides added three points by the 21st minute with oure coming from Mikey Costigan (2) and Jeff Cahill. We reduced the margin to two points in the 23rd minute with another point from Mikey Costigan but Dungarvan replied immediately with their second goal. They added a point to lead by six before a fine save by Donal Carey prevented another goal. We got back in the game in the 27th minute when Michael Roche won a ball in the half back line and ran through the defence before giving to Mikey Costigan who buried the ball in the net. A further exchange of points involving Mikey Costigan saw us trail 2-10 to 1-10 at half time.

Early second half points from Eddie Meaney and Mikey Costigan (free) either side of two Dungarvan points in the first seven minutes kept three between us but Dungarvan then took over to lead by eight points entering the last few minutes with Jeff Cahill our only marksman. A great move involving David Hogan, James Stone and Luke Flynn created the chance for Eddie Meaney to goal in the 28th minute but Dungarvan came back to add two further points to secure the win.

Scorers: Mikey Costigan 1-6 (0-4 frees), Eddie Meaney 1-3, Jeff Cahill 0-2, Conor Dunphy and Luke Walsh 0-1 each.

De La Salle 1-17 Ballygunner 2-12

Our minor hurlers made it three wins out of three when they defeated Ballygunner last Wednesday in Ballygunner. This was a very good game between two evenly matched sides and it went down to the wire with our lads having to save a 20 metre free deep into injury time to emerge victorious but in fairness it was a deserved win.

We opened well with Cormac McCann and Jeff Cahill (back after injury) pointing in the first three minutes, but by the eight minute we trailed 0-3 to 0-2. We regained the lead a minutes later when Craig Dowling and Cormac McCann created the opportunity for Thomas Douglas to goal. We added further points from Jeff Cahill and Cormac McCann either side of a fine save by Donal Carey to lead 1-4 to 0-3 after eleven minutes. Ballygunner then had a period of dominance and pointed three frees between the 12th and 22nd minutes. They equalised in the 23rd minute but an injury time point by Eddie Meaney had us ahead 1-5 to 0-7 at half time.

Ballygunner took the lead two minutes after the restart when they goaled but we replied with three points by the eight minute from Thomas Douglas, Mikey Costigan (free) and Eddie Meaney. Ballygunner equalised and an exchange of points involving Luke Walsh had it all square again 1-9 each after twelve minutes.

Mikey Costigan restored our lead from a free and he then got the score of the night when he pointed after some superb individual play. Points from Jeff Cahill, Eddie Meaney and Mikey Costigan again, made it 1-14 to 1-9 with ten minutes left. Ballygunner pointed but Luke Walsh replied immediately. Then came another twist in the 23rd minute when we failed to clear a Ballygunner indirect free and they goaled. A foul on Thomas Douglas resulted in Mikey Costigan converting the free and it was 1-16 to 2-10 after 25 minutes. Points by Ballygunner in the 27th and 28th minutes reduced the gap to the minimum but Cormac McCann pointed in the 30th minute. There was one final drama deep into injury time when several players were contesting the ball on the 20 metre line near the sideline and Ballygunner were awarded a free. Some of our team mentors voiced their dissent at the decision and the free was moved in. It was then moved in a second time directly in front of the goal but the effort was stopped and the final whistle sounded much to our relief.

Scorers: Mikey Costigan 0-5 (0-3 frees), Thomas Douglas 1-1, Cormac McCann, Jeff Cahill and Eddie Meaney 0-3 each, Luke Walsh 0-2.

Panel: Donal Carey, Tom Crotty, Lee Wall, Chris Kong, Craig Dowling, Michael Roche, Evan Whelan, Eddie Meaney, Conor Dunphy, Gavin Coppinger, Jeff Cahill, Luke Walsh, Cormac McCann, Mikey Costigan, Thomas Douglas, Conor Hogan, Peter Grogan, Adam Hayes, David Hogan, Shaun O’Brien, Conor Giles-Doran, Luke Flynn, Jack Laffan, James Stone.

De La Salle 3-6 Portlaw 0-8

Our junior footballers ended the league part of the campaign with a win over Portlaw in Gracedieu last Monday. This game was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests and the teams were actually level with three minutes left but we finished strongly scoring 2-1 to claim the points.

Playing against a strong wind we were satisfied to see the teams level at 0-1 each at the end of the first quarter with David Farrell pointing a free after David Hogan was fouled. However Portlaw took control and scored four unanswered points as we approached the interval. We were back in the game in the 29th minute when Eamonn Fitzgerald goaled after good play by Adam Deegan and on the stroke of half time Micheál Kavanagh equalised. Great credit has to go to our defence led by Alan Fitzgerald for their first half display.

The second half began with an exchange of points inside the first two minutes with David Farrell on target for us. Portlaw then pointed twice in the sixth and eight minutes to lead 0-8 to 1-3. There followed thirteen scoreless minutes befor Conor Bohane reduced the margin to the minimum. A foul on Adam Deegan saw David Farrell equalise in the 24th minute. Portlaw then lost their goalkeeper to injury and it was to prove costly in the 27th minute when James Grogan’s forty five went all the way to the net. We made the game safe in the 30th minute when Barry Twomey goaled after good approach play by Peter O’Hagan and Adam Deegan. We ended the scoring a minute later when David Farrell kicked a fine point.

Scorers: David Farrell 0-4 (0-2 frees), Eamonn Fitzgerald, James Grogan (’45) and Barry Twomey 1-0 each, Micheál Kavanagh and Conor Bohane 0-1 each.

Panel: Eamonn Dalton, Ryan Duke, David Sutton, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Peter O’Hagan, Alan Fitzgerald, Conor Hogan, James Grogan, Adam Deegan, Micheál Kavanagh, Eamonn Fitzgerald, David Farrell, David Hogan, Barry Twomey, Ben O’Dwyer, Conor Bohane, Keith Deasy, Craig Connolly.

    • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Championship

De La Salle 1-12 St. Saviours 2-8
Our junior hurlers ended the league section of their championship with a one point victory over St. Saviours in a close hard fought game played in Cleaboy last Friday. This was a game in which we led for the most part but could never pull away and an injury time goal for St. Saviours had us glad to hear the whistle.
A highlight of this game was the performance of Cormac McCann who was making his debut at this level and ended up as top scorer but on the downside Darren Casey picked up an injury which could see him miss a few weeks action. Another feature of this game was the top quality saves made by both goalkeepers.
St. Saviours opened the scoring inside the first minute but we replied with points from Christopher Sheehan, Mikey Costigan and Luke Lalor to lead 0-3 to 0-1 after four minutes. St. Saviours regained the lead in the ninth minute when they goaled and they added a point two minutes later. We added four points between the thirteenth and twenty first minutes from Cormac McCann, Eamonn Fitzgerald and Mikey Costigan with two frees after fouls on himself and Darren Casey. St. Saviours then scored two points to level matters before Eamonn Fitzgerald pointed in the 29th minute to see us ahead 0-8 to 1-4 at the interval.
The first score of the second half came in the fourth minute when Cormac McCann ran on to Kieran O’Donohoe’s long delivery and crashed the ball to the net. Christopher Sheehan and Cormac McCann then added points. St. Saviours got their first point of the half before Mikey Costigan pointed another free after Christopher Sheehan was fouled to keep us ahead 1-11 to 1-5 midway through the half. St. Saviours pointed twice in the 20th and 22nd minutes before Mikey Costigan got our last score in the 24th minute from a sixty five to make it 1-12 to 1-7. St. Saviours made it a four point game with a point in the 27th minute. Then came their goal in injury time but time ran out for them.We now wait to see who we play in the knockout stages.

Scorers: Cormac McCann 1-2, Mikey Costigan 0-5 (0-3 frees, 0-1 ’65), Christopher Sheehan and Eamonn Fitzgerald 0-2 each, Luke Lalor 0-1.
Panel: Conor Bohane, Mark Joy-Kinsella, David Sutton, Ryan Duke, Kieran O’Donohoe, Darragh Fitzpatrick (captain), Darren Casey, Christopher Sheehan, Gavin Coppinger, Niall O’Sullivan, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Mikey Costigan, Cormac McCann, Luke Lalor, Conor Dunphy, Jefff Cahill, Philip Burke, Tom Crotty, Jack O’Donohoe, James Quinlan, Barry Murphy, Keith Deasy, Willie Power.

Congratulations to Derek McGrath, Kevin Moran, Jake Dillon, Stephen Daniels, Eddie Barrett, Shane McNulty, Mark Cooney, Fergal O’Brien and the Waterford senior hurlers on an excellent win over Dublin last Sunday in Semple Stadium to qualify for a tilt at the reigning champions Kilkenny in the All Ireland hurling semi final. It was especially thriling for us to see Stephen Daniels return to championship action for the first time since 2012 and to be involved in the moves for both goals. It was also a good weekend for Jason Ryan and Micko Casey as Kildare qualified for the All Ireland football quarter finals. Well done to all.

Our U-16 hurlers maintained their unbeaten start with this win in Ballygunner last Wednesday. The main talking point after the game was Thomas Douglas scoring an individual tally of 8-8. The assumption after was that this was a club record for one player as no one could recall it being bettered.

De La Salle 1-22 Tramore 0-9

Our intermediate hurlers ensured qualification for the knockout stages with a comfortable win over Tramore in Walsh Park last Saturday. This was a game in which we led throughout but in fairness to Tramore they made a battle of it for forty minutes or so but we carried too much firepower for themon the day.

Lining out without Lee Hayes and Robert Daniels who failed to recover from injuries picked up the last day and the unavailable Colm Morris we dominated the first ten minutes and led 0-6 to 0-0 through points from Brian Cunningham (4), Shane Ryan and Dylan Foley. Tramore then scored four frees in five minutes to leave two points in it at the end of the first quarter. A foul on Stephen Jacob saw Brian Cunningham point before two Tramore points left the minimum between the sides in the 24th minute. We finished the half stronger with Shane Ryan pointing and Brian Cunningham converting a free for a foul on Patrick Flynn to leave us ahead 0-9 to 0-6 at the interval. We began the second half with Brian Cunningham pointing twice inside the first minute and he added another from a free in the fifth minute after Shane Ryan was fouled. Tramore then rallied a produced a fine save from Kyle Sinnott before they pointed twice to make it 0-12 to 0-8 with ten minutes gone. However that was as good as it got for them as we took control scoring six points in a row through  Shane Ryan (3), Dylan Foley, Brian Cunningham and Thomas Kearney to make 0-18 to 0-8 with nine minutes left. Tramore got their last point in the 23rd minute and we replied with two from Stephen Jacob and Dylan Foley before Evan Whelan picked out Dylan Foley with a crossfield pass and he crashed the sliotar to the roof of the net in the 27th minute. We ended the scoring with two further points from Shane Ryan and Brian Cunningham in the 28th and 29th minutes. Disappointingly there was one further incident when a row broke out between several players nearly four minutes into injury time and we had a player dismissed.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-11 (0-7 frees) Shane Ryan 0-6, Dylan Foley 1-3, Thomas Kearney and Stephen Jacob 0-1 each.

Panel: Kyle Sinnott, Martin Sheehan, Kenneth Byrne, Adam Doyle, Lee Wall, Jack McCarthy, Craig Dowling, Patrick Flynn, Matthew Barden, Dylan Foley, Thomas Kearney, Barry Twomey, Brian Cunningham, Stephen Jacob, Shane Ryan, Evan Whelan, Adam O’Sullivan, Conor Bohane, Ryan Duke, Gavin Coppinger, Mikey Costigan, Conor Dunphy, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Cormac McCann, Lee Hayes, Robert Daniels, Colm Morris, Donal Barron.

De La Salle 4-14 Naomh Deaglain Thoir 0-14

Our minor hurlers made it two wins out of two when they defeated the Ballyduff Lower/Kilmacthomas combination of Naomh Deaglain Thoir last Wednesday in Gracedieu. A hat trick by U-16 player Thomas Douglas was the highlight of this game where a strong finish gave us a victory that was much harder earned than the scoreline would suggest. In fact there was only two points between the sides at the three quarter stage but we outscored our opponents 3-3 to 0-2 in the final period.

The opening exchanges were even and it was 0-3 each after eleven minutes with Mikey Costigan, Conor Dunphy and Cormac McCann on target. Naomh Deaglain Thoir pointed twice before Thomas Douglas was on hand to goal in the 18th minute after the goalkeeper failed to deal with Conor Dunphy’s delivery. Naomh Deaglain Thoir equalised immediately and both sides added a further two points, with ours coming from Evan Whelan and Mikey Costigan, to leave it all square at half time 1-5 to 0-8.

Naomh Deaglain Thoir took the lead immediately after the restart but we replied with three points in three minutes from James Stone, Thomas Douglas and Mikey Costigan. Naomh Deaglain Thoir pointed in the fifth minute. Thomas Douglas pointed two frees and Eddie Meaney pointed a sideline cut in between two Naomh Deaglain Thoir points to make it 1-11 to 0-12 midway through the half. The decisive score came in the 16th minute when a Thomas Douglas shot was saved by the goalkeeper but Eddie Meaney was on hand to goal from the rebound. Mikey Costigan followed with three long range frees and Naomh Deaglain Thoir pointed twice in reply to make it 2-14 to 0-14 with four minutes left. Thomas Douglas then struck two goals in the 28th and 31st minutes to put the gloss on the result.

Naomh Deaglain ThoirScorers: Thomas Douglas 3-3 (0-2 frees), Michael Costigan 0-6 (frees), Eddie Meaney 1-1 (0-1 sideline), Conor Dunphy, Cormac McCann, Evan Whelan and James Stone 0-1 each.

    • County Minor Hurling Championship Division 3

We have this year entered a B team in minor hurling and so far they have more than justified the decision going down narrowly to St. Saviours 2-12 to 2-8 in the first round and then defeating Erins Own 7-7 to 2-13 in the second round.

    • City League U-12 Hurling

De La Salle 2-8 Mooncoin 3-2

We played our last league game in the U-12 City League v Mooncoin in Gracedieu last Monday night. We took an early lead thanks to a goal from Josh Kelly and points from frees by Darragh Crowe. We held this lead until the last few minutes when Mooncoin scored a goal to level the match. With time nearly up it looked like a draw was the likely result but a late goal by Darragh Crowe gave us the lead. Mooncoin attacked again and we were thankful to hear the final whistle.

We have now played all our games in the league and have finished joint top of the league with Ballygunner having won 5 and drawn 1.

Scorers: Darragh Crowe 1-6 (0-5 frees), Josh Kelly 1-0, Conor O’Shea and Cormac Dawson 0-1 each.

    • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Championship

De La Salle 2-14 St. Mollerans 3-11

Our junior hurlers were held to a draw by St. Mollerans when they scored an injury time goal in another close hard fought game played in Gracedieu last Friday. This was a game in which we led for the most part but could never pull away and in the end St. Mollerans battling qualities snatched a draw for them.

The first quarter saw both sides point twice with ours coming from Kieran O’Donohoe and the outstanding Eamonn Fitzgerald. Four points from Eamonn Fitzgerald, Luke Lalor and Mikey Costigan (2), between the 16th and 23rd minutes put us in ahead but in the 24th minute St. Mollerans got in for their first goal. We replied with three points from Conor Dunphy and Mikey Costigan (2) between the 28th and 31st minutes to see us ahead 0-9 to 1-2 at the interval.

The second half began with Mikey Costigan and Luke Lalor pointing to stretch our lead but in the third minute a St. Mollerans free went all the way to the net. They added a point in the sixth minute but from the resultant puck out Luke Lalor made a superb catch to set up Eamonn Fitzgerald for our first goal. Back came St. Mollerans with three consecutive points before Conor Dunphy pointed to keep us ahead 1-12 to 2-6 midway through the half. An exchange of points with Conor Dunphy again involved was followed by two more St. Mollerans points to leave us ahead by the minimum 1-13 to 2-9 with ten minutes left. We looked to have weathered the storm when Eamonn Fitzgerald scored an excellent solo goal in the 22nd minute. An exchange of points involving Mikey Costigan made it 2-14 to 2-10 with five minutes left. St. Mollerans piled on the pressure and reduced the margin to three in the 28th minute. Then came that goal in injury time when we failed to clear a free and the ball ended up in our net apparently off the boot of one of our  own players and it was honours even for the night.

Scorers: Eamonn Fitzgerald 2-2, Mikey Costigan 0-6 (0-3 frees), Conor Dunphy 0-3, Luke Lalor 0-2, Kieran O’Donohoe 0-1.

Panel: Conor Bohane, Ryan Duke, Darragh Fitzpatrick (captain), Mark Joy-Kinsella, Tom Crotty, Christopher Sheehan, Darren Casey, Gavin Coppinger, Micheál Kavanagh, Kieran O’Donohoe, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Mikey Costigan, Philip Burke, Luke Lalor, Conor Dunphy, Niall O’Sullivan, Jack O’Donohoe, James Quinlan, Evan Deegan, Willie Power.

    • County Minor Hurling Championship Division 1

De La Salle 3-16 St. Carthages 2-12
Our minor hurlers began their championship campaign with a hard earned victory over St. Carthages on Thursday last. We got off to the best possible start as Cormac McCann found the net early on. Gavin Coppinger added a further goal only minutes later as we established a healthy lead. A young St. Carthages team battled hard and got a goal of their own mid way through the first half. Further points from Cormac McCann, Evan Whelan, Eddie Meaney and Mikey Cositgan left us in the lead at half time, 2-6 to 1-4. After an early exchange of points St. Carthages brought the score back to two points with a well taken goal. A magnificent save by Donal Carey was needed to keep our lead intact going into the final quarter. Mikey Costigan struck a vital goal on 54 minutes to put daylight between the teams at the end. A great team performance and an important victory in what’s sure to be a very competitive championship.

Panel: Donal Carey, Tom Crotty, Lee Wall, Peter Grogan, Craig Dowling, Michael Roche, Chris Kong, Conor Dunphy, Evan Whelan, James Stone, Eddie Meaney, Gavin Coppinger, Cormac McCann, Thomas Douglas, Michael Costigan, David Hogan, Conor Hogan, Adam Hayes, Jack Laffan, Shaun O’Brien, Luke Walsh, Luke Flynn, Conor Giles-Doran, Jeff Cahill.

    • Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs East Intermediate Hurling Championship

De La Salle 1-15 Erins Own 0-16
Our intermediate hurlers made sure that qualification for the knockout stages would remain in their own hands with a very good win over a previously unbeaten Erins Own side in Walsh Park last Saturday. We had a number of players back who had missed the last game and it led to a much improved overall performance on the day. Also back was Shane Ryan returning after an eight month study absence and his contribution of 1-3 from play was to prove decisive.

Playing with the wind in the first half we began well and led 0-5 to 0-0 after ten minutes through a Brian Cunningham free after a foul on Stephen Jacob, Matthew Barden and Shane Ryan who hit three in a row. Erins Own finally opened their account before Brian Cunningham added a point from play. Erins Own pointed twice either side of a Brian Cunningham free for a foul on Robert Daniels to make it 0-7 to 0-3 after twenty minutes. Another foul on Stephen Jacob saw Brian Cunningham convert and further points came from Stephen Jacob and Dylan Foley, who had replaced the injured Robert Daniels, before Erins Own pointed in injury time to leave us ahead 0-10 to 0-4 at the interval.
Erins Own began the second half with two quick points with Brian Cunningham replying in the third minute after Matthew Barden was fouled. Erins Own’s comeback gathered momentum and they scored four points in a row to reduce our lead to the minimum. The game’s decisive score came in the 12th minute when Shane Ryan goaled after a great run by Dylan Foley.

We now led 1-11 to 0-10 but back came Erins Own with two points as we lost Lee Hayes to injury. Brian Cunningham stretched the lead to three points from another free but Erins Own came again with two more points to make 1-12 to 0-14 with nine minutes left. Two frees by Brian Cunningham after fouls on himself and Dylan Foley cancelled out two Erins Own points with twenty seven minutes gone and the final score came when Colm Morris sent over a fine point in the 29th minute to secure the win.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-8 (0-7 frees) Shane Ryan 1-3, Matthew Barden, Stephen Jacob, Dylan Foley, and Colm Morris 0-1 each.

Panel: Kyle Sinnott, Martin Sheehan, Kenneth Byrne, Adam Doyle, Lee Wall, Jack McCarthy, Craig Dowling, Colm Morris, Matthew Barden, Robert Daniels, Thomas Kearney, Lee Hayes, Brian Cunningham, Stephen Jacob, Shane Ryan, Dylan Foley, Patrick Flynn, Donal Barron, Barry Twomey, Evan Whelan, Conor Bohane, Ryan Duke, Gavin Coppinger, Mikey Costigan, Conor Dunphy, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Cormac McCann.

    • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Championship

De La Salle 1-11 Portlaw 0-11
Our junior hurlers got another win when three injury time points saw us overcome Portlaw in a close hard fought game in Gracedieu last Friday. This was an entertaining and sporting match throughout and having led by two points at half time we were pegged back to equality three times in the last ten minutes before our late scoring burst proved decisive but Portlaw will probably feel they were somewhat unlucky not to share the spoils in the end.

Portlaw led for the only time when they pointed twice in the first three minutes. Three points from Mikey Costigan (free), Conor Dunphy and Christopher Sheehan between the 7th and 14th minutes put us in front but Portlaw equalised at the midway point. An exchange of points involving a Mikey Costigan free had it still level after nineteen minutes. We were back in front again in the 20th minute when after good play by Mikey Costigan and Christopher Sheehan, Micheál Kavanagh goaled to make it 1-4 to 0-4. Portlaw replied with a point in the 24th minute to see us ahead 1-4 to 0-5 at the interval.

The second half was tight and it was the 10th minute before the first score came which was a Portlaw point. Mikey Costigan replied with a pointed free in the 11th minute and Portlaw pointed again a minute later. Christopher Sheehan pointed in the 14th minute as we led 1-6 to 0-7 midway through the half. Back came Portlaw with points in the 19th and 21st minutes to make it all square. Eamonn Fitzgerald put us ahead again in the 22nd minute only for Portlaw to equalise immediately. Mikey Costigan pointed in the 27th minute but a minute later Portlaw pointed a ’65 and it was level 1-8 to 0-11. We went back in front in the first minute of injury time when Christopher Sheehan pointed and from the puck out Mikey Costigan made it a two point game. Portlaw attempted to mount one last attack but the ball was cleared to Conor Dunphy who drove the ball over the bar to secure the win.

Scorers: Mikey Costigan 0-5 (0-3 frees), Christopher Sheehan 0-3, Micheál Kavanagh 1-0, Conor Dunphy 0-2, Eamonn Fitzgerald 0-1.

Panel: Conor Bohane, Ryan Duke, David Sutton, Mark Joy-Kinsella, Tom Crotty, Darragh Fitzpatrick (captain), Barry Murphy, Gavin Coppinger, Christopher Sheehan, Micheál Kavanagh, Mikey Costigan, Kieran O’Donohoe, Conor Dunphy, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Niall O’Sullivan, Darren Casey, Willie Power, Adam Hayes, Jack O’Donohoe.

    • County Senior Hurling Championship

De La Salle 0-17 Ballygunner 1-12
Our senior hurlers sponsored by John Kelly Opel got their first win of the championship when we deservedly beat the previously unbeaten county champions Ballygunner in Walsh Park last Tuesday. There was much relief in our camp when the final whistle sounded as we badly needed the points but also because Ballygunner came so close to snatching it in the end. It was a game in which we built up an eight point lead in the first half while wind assisted and in the second half we had to withstand a Ballygunner response which got stronger in the final quarter.
Lining out without the injured Shane McNulty and Stephen Dalton, we began well with points from Jake Dillon and a superb effort from Kevin Moran in the first three minutes. A further effort from Jake Dillon in between two Ballygunner points saw us lead 0-3 to 0-2 after ten minutes. We were then awarded a penalty in the 14th minute after the very effective Paudie Nevin was fouled but Jake Dillon’s effort went over the bar. We were now in control of the game and added five further points in a row by the 26th minute from Bryan Phelan, Adam Farrell, John Mullane and Jake Dillon (2). Ballygunner replied with their third point but we hit two more from Adam Farrell and Jake Dillon to see us ahead 0-11 to 0-3 at half time.
We began the second half with a Jake Dillon free but Ballygunner scored two points in reply. In the fifth minute Paudie Nevin’s shot for goal was somehow deflected over the bar by the Ballygunner keeper for what was an incredible save. Ballygunner then scored three points in a row before John Mullane got the score of the game from out by the sideline in the 15th minute to make it 0-14 to 0-8.
Ballygunner pointed again in the 16th and 19th minutes before a Jake Dillon point made it 0-15 to 0-10 with ten minutes left. Further points in the 26th and 27th minutes left only three in it but an excellent score from Adam Farrell made it a four point game with two minutes left. Ballygunner then goaled in the 29th minute to leave the minimum between the sides but Jake Dillon stretched it to two as we entered injury time. Ballygunner had one last chance of a goal but we managed to avert the danger and the win was secured.
Scorers: Jake Dillon 0-9 (0-8 frees, 0-1 penalty), Adam Farrell 0-3, John Mullane 0-2, Kevin Moran, Bryan Phelan (free) and Paudie Nevin 0-1 each.
Panel: Stevie Brenner, Tom Moran, Ian Flynn, Stephen Daniels, Bryan

    • East Junior Football Championship

De La Salle 3-9 Kill 1-12
Our junior footballers had their fourth win of the campaign and ensured qualification for the knockout stages with a hard fough victory over Kill in Gracedieu last Friday. This was an enjoyable game of football between two evenly matched sides and it would be probably fair to say that our ability to get goals allied to Kill having a key player sent off midway through the second half were the deciding factors on the night.
Playing against the wind we made a great start with the excellent Joey Twomey pointing and Craig Connolly goaling inside two minutes. Kill opened their account with two points before Joey Twomey pointed again in the 11th minute. Kill pointed a minute later before points from Barry Twomey and David Farrell made it 1-4 to 0-3 midway through the half. Kill then scored four points in four minutes to level matters. Joey Twomey pointed a free after a foul on Adam Deegan in the 20th minute and Eamonn Fitzgerald added another a minute later. Kill took the lead in the 23rd minute when they goaled. This proved to be the last score of the half so we trailed 1-7 to 1-6 at the break.
Kill began the second half with a point inside the first minute but we were back in front after Eamonn Fitzgerald and Barry Twomey set up Joey Twomey for a fine goal. Kill responded and added two points in the eight and ninth minutes to regain the lead. However, it was shortlived as we came straight up the field and Eamonn Fitzgerald scored our third goal. Craig Connolly pointed in the 14th minute and we led 3-7 to 1-10. It was around this time that Kill were reduced to fourteen players and points from Joey Twomey and David Farrell stretched our lead to five with eleven minutes left. Credit to Kill, they kept battling and added two points to their tally in the 24th and 31st minutes before the final whistle sounded.
Scorers: Joey Twomey 1-4 (0-1 free), Craig Connolly and Eamonn Fitzgerald 1-1 each, David Farrell 0-2, Barry Twomey 0-1.

    Friday

The gaffer is in fine form this morning. A win this weekend would put him 1 ahead of the high priest of Kerry football, the great Mick O’Dwyer, in the roll of honour of trophies won as gaffer by a Kerry native.

A two in a row is also on the cards.

Bus leaves the Cleaboy car park @13:15

The lads take on Breaffy of Mayo @3.45 in Piercestown

Impressive set up in Buffer’s Alley. I’d say there’ll be a crew from DLS heading up for their next SHEDFEST.

The lads just finished their grub in Sean Ogs in Kilmuckridge. Fine setup of a place and a great pint of stout. They are en route to Morristown beach now for a recovery session and 99…..

Tough assignment coming up against the Mayo boys but in Paudi we trust. Kerry men normally get the better of the Mayo men so hopefully the lads will do the business …

I’m on Rueben at 6/1 for the golden boot….

    • Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs East Intermediate Hurling Championship

Ballygunner 0-10 De La Salle 0-8
Our understrength intermediate hurlers went down to Ballygunner in a very poor game played in Walsh Park last Saturday. The fact that Ballygunner won this game scoring only 0-5 from play and our starting forward line only managed 0-2 from play best sums up how disappointing this game was from our point of view. In fairness to our lads thay were forced to line out without Conan Watt, Martin Sheehan, Patrick Flynn, Jack McCarthy and Lee Wall which necessitated the playing of a few players in defence who would normally line out as forwards which served to reduce the scoring threat from our side. The loss through injury of Dylan Foley in the first half and Stephen Jacob in the second certainly didn’t help matters either.
Playing with the wind in the first half we dominated tha game but shot a dozen wides and led 0-2 to 0-1 after twelve minutes through Dylan Foley and a Brian Cunningham free after a foul on Robert Daniels. There was no further scoring until the 24th minute when we hit three points in five minutes from Matthew Barden, Stephen Jacob and Lee Hayes. Ballygunner pointed in the 31st minute but late points from Matthew Barden and Evan Whelan had us ahead 0-7 to 0-2 at the interval.
The third quarter was all Ballygunner and they scored six unanswered points to lead 0-8 to 0-7 after fourteen minutes. A foul on Robert Daniels saw Brian Cunningham level matters in the 22nd minutes. However, Ballygunner got the scores that mattered with points in the 28th and 31st minutes. We had one last chance when we were awarded a free some 35 metres from goal but Kenneth Byrne’s attempt was deflected away and the whistle sounded.
Scorers: Brian Cunningham (frees) and Matthew Barden 0-2 each, Dylan Foley, Stephen Jacob, Lee Hayes and Evan Whelan 0-1 each.
Panel: Kyle Sinnott, Michael Roche, Kenneth Byrne, Adam Doyle, Colm Morris, Thomas Kearney, Craig Dowling, Matthew Barden, Stephen Jacob, Robert Daniels, Lee Hayes, Donal Barron, Dylan Foley, Barry Twomey, Brian Cunningham, Evan Whelan, Adam O’Sullivan, James Stone.

    • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Championship

De La Salle 5-13 Dunhill 1-16
Our junior hurlers had their second win in the championship when they overcame a previously unbeaten Dunhill side in Dunhill last Friday. Our goalscoring ability proved the main difference between the teams in this high scoring game. We built up an eight point lead after eighteen minute but Dunhill fought back to reduce the arrears to two points by the interval. However, two early second half goals helped us to an eleven point lead midway through the half and hard as Dunhill tried we were always in control to the end.
The first six minutes saw both sides score two points with ours coming from the excellent Mikey Costigan. Luke Lalor then scored two points in a row before Dunhill replied with one. The first goal came in the 14th minute when Christopher Sheehan picked out Stephen Jacob who raced through to crash the ball to the net. A point in reply from Dunhill made it 1-4 to 0-4 at the end of the first quarter. Conor Dunphy Dalton then addded a point before Kieran O’Donohoe, Christopher Sheehan and Luke Lalor combined to set up Philip Burke for our second goal. Another Mikey Costigan point made it 2-6 to 0-4 after eighteen minutes. Dunhill dominated the rest of the half and scored five points in a row. Christopher Sheehan pointed in the 28th minute but two more Dunhill points in injury time saw us ahead 2-7 to 0-11 at the interval.
The second half began with Mikey Costigan pointing a free in the first minute and a minute later we were awarded a penalty when the goalkeeper fouled Eamonn Fitzgerald. Mikey Costigan goaled with a well struck shot. Dunhill replied with a point in the third minute and three minutes later the goalkeeper conceded a second penalty which resulted in his dismissal. This time Mikey Costigan’s shot hit the crossbar but Mikey responded with two points either side of one from Christopher Sheehan to make it 3-11 to 0-12 after ten minutes. In the 13th minute Niall O’Sullivan and Luke Lalor set up Micheál Kavanagh for a fourth goal but then came a second Dunhill revival as they scored five unanswered points. We were fortunate that Conor Bohane made two fine saves before Dunhill finally got a goal with three minutes of normal time left to make it 4-12 to 1-16 but within sixty seconds Eamonn Fitzgerald blocked down a clearance and finished to the net. Mikey Costigan ended the scoring with another point.
Scorers: Mikey Costigan 1-7 (1-0 penalty, 0-6 frees), Stephen Jacob, Philip Burke, Micheál Kavanagh and Eamonn Fitzgerald 1-0 each, Luke Lalor, Conor Dunphy Dalton and Christopher Sheehan 0-2 each.
Panel: Conor Bohane, Ryan Duke, David Sutton, Kieran O’Donohoe, Mark Joy-Kinsella, Darragh Fitzpatrick, James Stone, Stephen Jacob, Christopher Sheehan, Niall O’Sullivan, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Mikey Costigan, Conor Dunphy Dalton, Luke Lalor, Philip Burke, Micheál Kavanagh, Jack O’Donohoe, Willie Power.
