- Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs East Intermediate Hurling Championship
Ballygunner 0-10 De La Salle 0-8
Our understrength intermediate hurlers went down to Ballygunner in a very poor game played in Walsh Park last Saturday. The fact that Ballygunner won this game scoring only 0-5 from play and our starting forward line only managed 0-2 from play best sums up how disappointing this game was from our point of view. In fairness to our lads thay were forced to line out without Conan Watt, Martin Sheehan, Patrick Flynn, Jack McCarthy and Lee Wall which necessitated the playing of a few players in defence who would normally line out as forwards which served to reduce the scoring threat from our side. The loss through injury of Dylan Foley in the first half and Stephen Jacob in the second certainly didn’t help matters either.
Playing with the wind in the first half we dominated tha game but shot a dozen wides and led 0-2 to 0-1 after twelve minutes through Dylan Foley and a Brian Cunningham free after a foul on Robert Daniels. There was no further scoring until the 24th minute when we hit three points in five minutes from Matthew Barden, Stephen Jacob and Lee Hayes. Ballygunner pointed in the 31st minute but late points from Matthew Barden and Evan Whelan had us ahead 0-7 to 0-2 at the interval.
The third quarter was all Ballygunner and they scored six unanswered points to lead 0-8 to 0-7 after fourteen minutes. A foul on Robert Daniels saw Brian Cunningham level matters in the 22nd minutes. However, Ballygunner got the scores that mattered with points in the 28th and 31st minutes. We had one last chance when we were awarded a free some 35 metres from goal but Kenneth Byrne’s attempt was deflected away and the whistle sounded.
Scorers: Brian Cunningham (frees) and Matthew Barden 0-2 each, Dylan Foley, Stephen Jacob, Lee Hayes and Evan Whelan 0-1 each.
Panel: Kyle Sinnott, Michael Roche, Kenneth Byrne, Adam Doyle, Colm Morris, Thomas Kearney, Craig Dowling, Matthew Barden, Stephen Jacob, Robert Daniels, Lee Hayes, Donal Barron, Dylan Foley, Barry Twomey, Brian Cunningham, Evan Whelan, Adam O’Sullivan, James Stone.
- John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Championship
De La Salle 5-13 Dunhill 1-16
Our junior hurlers had their second win in the championship when they overcame a previously unbeaten Dunhill side in Dunhill last Friday. Our goalscoring ability proved the main difference between the teams in this high scoring game. We built up an eight point lead after eighteen minute but Dunhill fought back to reduce the arrears to two points by the interval. However, two early second half goals helped us to an eleven point lead midway through the half and hard as Dunhill tried we were always in control to the end.
The first six minutes saw both sides score two points with ours coming from the excellent Mikey Costigan. Luke Lalor then scored two points in a row before Dunhill replied with one. The first goal came in the 14th minute when Christopher Sheehan picked out Stephen Jacob who raced through to crash the ball to the net. A point in reply from Dunhill made it 1-4 to 0-4 at the end of the first quarter. Conor Dunphy Dalton then addded a point before Kieran O’Donohoe, Christopher Sheehan and Luke Lalor combined to set up Philip Burke for our second goal. Another Mikey Costigan point made it 2-6 to 0-4 after eighteen minutes. Dunhill dominated the rest of the half and scored five points in a row. Christopher Sheehan pointed in the 28th minute but two more Dunhill points in injury time saw us ahead 2-7 to 0-11 at the interval.
The second half began with Mikey Costigan pointing a free in the first minute and a minute later we were awarded a penalty when the goalkeeper fouled Eamonn Fitzgerald. Mikey Costigan goaled with a well struck shot. Dunhill replied with a point in the third minute and three minutes later the goalkeeper conceded a second penalty which resulted in his dismissal. This time Mikey Costigan’s shot hit the crossbar but Mikey responded with two points either side of one from Christopher Sheehan to make it 3-11 to 0-12 after ten minutes. In the 13th minute Niall O’Sullivan and Luke Lalor set up Micheál Kavanagh for a fourth goal but then came a second Dunhill revival as they scored five unanswered points. We were fortunate that Conor Bohane made two fine saves before Dunhill finally got a goal with three minutes of normal time left to make it 4-12 to 1-16 but within sixty seconds Eamonn Fitzgerald blocked down a clearance and finished to the net. Mikey Costigan ended the scoring with another point.
Scorers: Mikey Costigan 1-7 (1-0 penalty, 0-6 frees), Stephen Jacob, Philip Burke, Micheál Kavanagh and Eamonn Fitzgerald 1-0 each, Luke Lalor, Conor Dunphy Dalton and Christopher Sheehan 0-2 each.
Panel: Conor Bohane, Ryan Duke, David Sutton, Kieran O’Donohoe, Mark Joy-Kinsella, Darragh Fitzpatrick, James Stone, Stephen Jacob, Christopher Sheehan, Niall O’Sullivan, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Mikey Costigan, Conor Dunphy Dalton, Luke Lalor, Philip Burke, Micheál Kavanagh, Jack O’Donohoe, Willie Power.
