Rathgormack 2-10 De La Salle 2-7

Our understrength senior footballers sponsored by John Kelly Opel went down narrowly to Rathgormack in an entertaining third round championship game played in Carrickbeg last Saturday. Even though defeat was our lot it has to be said that this was probably one of our most spirited performances since achieving senior status but unfortunately we came up a bit short on the night.

Lining out without several players including Oran Keevers, Ian Cantwell, Stephen Walsh, Stephen Dalton, Mitchell Casey and Paddy Kennedy we got off to a great start with two goals in the first two minutes. The first came from Lee Hayes who was on hand to finish to the net when a long range free from Colm Morris came back of the upright. A minute later debutant minor Michael Roche rounded his man and finished low to the net despite being fouled with a good advantage being played. Rathgormack then kicked four points between the seventh and eleventh minutes. Rathgormack pointed again in the 20th minute before Colm Morris replied from a free two minutes later afteer the excellent Conan Watt was fouled. Rathgormack took the lead in the 24th minute when a long free broke inside our backs and was finished to the net. They added a point in injury time to lead 1-6 to 2-1 at the break. We began the second half with points from a Colm Morris free after Michael Roche was fouled and Conan Watt to level matters.

However, Rathgormack were back in front in the eight minute when they got in for their second goal. We were out of luck in the 14th minute when Patrick Flynn beat the keeper but his shot went just outside the far post. Rathgoramck pointed in the 16th minute but Colm Morris replied a minute later after good work by Craig Dowling and Patrick Flynn. Rathgormack pointed a free in the 19th minute and Colm Morris did likewise a minute later after Lee Hayes was fouled. Another exchange of frees involving Colm Morris after Patrick Flynn was fouled saw three points still between the sides with five minutes left. Rathgormack made it a four point game in the 28th minute but Kenneth Byrne brought it back to three with a fine point in the 31st minute. One last attack came to nothing and the final whistle sounded.

Scorers: Colm Morris 0-5 (0-4 frees), Lee Hayes and Michael Roche 1-0 each, Conan Watt and Kenneth Byrne 0-1 each.

    • County Minor Hurling Championship Division 1

Dungarvan 2-20 De La Salle 2-13

Our minor hurlers suffered their first defeat of this year’s campaign when they went down to a better Dungarvan side in Gracedieu last Tuesday. This was a a game which was competitive for the most part but Dungarvan finished with a strong last quarter performance for a deserved win.

Dungarvan opened well and we trailed 0-4 to 0-1 after five minutes with Eddie Meaney on target. We were level by the 11th minute with points from Conor Dunphy, Luke Walsh and Eddie Meaney. Mikey Costigan gave us the lead a minutes later but Dungarvan goaled in the 13th minute. We were fortunate not to concede another goal thanks to some excellent defensive work by Peter Grogan before Dungarvan pointed again to lead 1-5 to 0-5 midway through the half. Both sides added three points by the 21st minute with oure coming from Mikey Costigan (2) and Jeff Cahill. We reduced the margin to two points in the 23rd minute with another point from Mikey Costigan but Dungarvan replied immediately with their second goal. They added a point to lead by six before a fine save by Donal Carey prevented another goal. We got back in the game in the 27th minute when Michael Roche won a ball in the half back line and ran through the defence before giving to Mikey Costigan who buried the ball in the net. A further exchange of points involving Mikey Costigan saw us trail 2-10 to 1-10 at half time.

Early second half points from Eddie Meaney and Mikey Costigan (free) either side of two Dungarvan points in the first seven minutes kept three between us but Dungarvan then took over to lead by eight points entering the last few minutes with Jeff Cahill our only marksman. A great move involving David Hogan, James Stone and Luke Flynn created the chance for Eddie Meaney to goal in the 28th minute but Dungarvan came back to add two further points to secure the win.
