De La Salle 1-22 Tramore 0-9

Our intermediate hurlers ensured qualification for the knockout stages with a comfortable win over Tramore in Walsh Park last Saturday. This was a game in which we led throughout but in fairness to Tramore they made a battle of it for forty minutes or so but we carried too much firepower for themon the day.

Lining out without Lee Hayes and Robert Daniels who failed to recover from injuries picked up the last day and the unavailable Colm Morris we dominated the first ten minutes and led 0-6 to 0-0 through points from Brian Cunningham (4), Shane Ryan and Dylan Foley. Tramore then scored four frees in five minutes to leave two points in it at the end of the first quarter. A foul on Stephen Jacob saw Brian Cunningham point before two Tramore points left the minimum between the sides in the 24th minute. We finished the half stronger with Shane Ryan pointing and Brian Cunningham converting a free for a foul on Patrick Flynn to leave us ahead 0-9 to 0-6 at the interval. We began the second half with Brian Cunningham pointing twice inside the first minute and he added another from a free in the fifth minute after Shane Ryan was fouled. Tramore then rallied a produced a fine save from Kyle Sinnott before they pointed twice to make it 0-12 to 0-8 with ten minutes gone. However that was as good as it got for them as we took control scoring six points in a row through  Shane Ryan (3), Dylan Foley, Brian Cunningham and Thomas Kearney to make 0-18 to 0-8 with nine minutes left. Tramore got their last point in the 23rd minute and we replied with two from Stephen Jacob and Dylan Foley before Evan Whelan picked out Dylan Foley with a crossfield pass and he crashed the sliotar to the roof of the net in the 27th minute. We ended the scoring with two further points from Shane Ryan and Brian Cunningham in the 28th and 29th minutes. Disappointingly there was one further incident when a row broke out between several players nearly four minutes into injury time and we had a player dismissed.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-11 (0-7 frees) Shane Ryan 0-6, Dylan Foley 1-3, Thomas Kearney and Stephen Jacob 0-1 each.

    • County Minor Hurling Championship Division 1

De La Salle 4-14 Naomh Deaglain Thoir 0-14

Our minor hurlers made it two wins out of two when they defeated the Ballyduff Lower/Kilmacthomas combination of Naomh Deaglain Thoir last Wednesday in Gracedieu. A hat trick by U-16 player Thomas Douglas was the highlight of this game where a strong finish gave us a victory that was much harder earned than the scoreline would suggest. In fact there was only two points between the sides at the three quarter stage but we outscored our opponents 3-3 to 0-2 in the final period.

The opening exchanges were even and it was 0-3 each after eleven minutes with Mikey Costigan, Conor Dunphy and Cormac McCann on target. Naomh Deaglain Thoir pointed twice before Thomas Douglas was on hand to goal in the 18th minute after the goalkeeper failed to deal with Conor Dunphy’s delivery. Naomh Deaglain Thoir equalised immediately and both sides added a further two points, with ours coming from Evan Whelan and Mikey Costigan, to leave it all square at half time 1-5 to 0-8.

Naomh Deaglain Thoir took the lead immediately after the restart but we replied with three points in three minutes from James Stone, Thomas Douglas and Mikey Costigan. Naomh Deaglain Thoir pointed in the fifth minute. Thomas Douglas pointed two frees and Eddie Meaney pointed a sideline cut in between two Naomh Deaglain Thoir points to make it 1-11 to 0-12 midway through the half. The decisive score came in the 16th minute when a Thomas Douglas shot was saved by the goalkeeper but Eddie Meaney was on hand to goal from the rebound. Mikey Costigan followed with three long range frees and Naomh Deaglain Thoir pointed twice in reply to make it 2-14 to 0-14 with four minutes left. Thomas Douglas then struck two goals in the 28th and 31st minutes to put the gloss on the result.

Naomh Deaglain ThoirScorers: Thomas Douglas 3-3 (0-2 frees), Michael Costigan 0-6 (frees), Eddie Meaney 1-1 (0-1 sideline), Conor Dunphy, Cormac McCann, Evan Whelan and James Stone 0-1 each.

    • County Minor Hurling Championship Division 3

We have this year entered a B team in minor hurling and so far they have more than justified the decision going down narrowly to St. Saviours 2-12 to 2-8 in the first round and then defeating Erins Own 7-7 to 2-13 in the second round.

    • City League U-12 Hurling

De La Salle 2-8 Mooncoin 3-2

We played our last league game in the U-12 City League v Mooncoin in Gracedieu last Monday night. We took an early lead thanks to a goal from Josh Kelly and points from frees by Darragh Crowe. We held this lead until the last few minutes when Mooncoin scored a goal to level the match. With time nearly up it looked like a draw was the likely result but a late goal by Darragh Crowe gave us the lead. Mooncoin attacked again and we were thankful to hear the final whistle.

We have now played all our games in the league and have finished joint top of the league with Ballygunner having won 5 and drawn 1.

Scorers: Darragh Crowe 1-6 (0-5 frees), Josh Kelly 1-0, Conor O’Shea and Cormac Dawson 0-1 each.

Panel: Daire Treacy, Cormac Dawson, Glen Buckley, Alex Keane, Conor Cummins, Evan Hayes, Kieran O’Sullivan, Josh Kelly, Conor O’Shea, Darragh Crowe, Sultan Adenekan, Shane Keenan, Jack Pheasy.

    Munster U-21 Hurling Semi Final

Commiserations to Shane McNulty, John Mullane and the Waterford U-21 hurlers on their disappointing defdeat by Clare last Wednesday in Ennis. Unfortunately it appears that the short gap from the senior final ultimately had a tiring effect on the young lads.
