    • County U-16 Hurling Final

Mount Sion 1-13 De La Salle 0-13

There was huge disappointment for our U-16 hurlers last Saturday when they were beaten in the county final by Mount Sion in Walsh Park. This was a thoroughly deserved win for Mount Sion on the day in what was overall a decent game. We had a chance to to force extra time right at the death but it was not to be. These young lads have now felt the pain of losing the U-16 hurling and football finals this year and suffered the same fate two years ago at U-14 level. Hopefully there will be better luck in store for them as they enter the minor grade.

Mount Sion opened the scoring in the second minute from a free but Sean Power equalised a minute later. Mount Sion pointed another free in the fourth minute but we equalised immediately again when Thomas Douglas pointed. Mount Sion regained the lead in the seventh minute from a well struck sideline cut but Thomas Douglas levelled matter again a minute later. Two more frees in the 13th and 16th minutes put Mount Sion two ahead but we replied in the 21st and 23rd minutes with points from Dylan Finn and Luke Flynn to make it 0-5 each. Having missed a few frees ourselves Kevin Hennessy now took over and pointed two in the 24th and 25th minutes after fouls on Sean Power and Sean Carton. The game’s decisive score came a minute later when Mount Sion scored what proved to be the only goal in the game. They added another point from a free in the 30th minute to lead 1-6 to 0-7 at the interval. We began the second half well with Kevin Hennessy pointing a free in the second minute after Thomas Douglas was fouled. A minute later the Mount Sion keeper made a fine save and when the resultant sixty five dropped short Thomas Douglas won possession and equalised. Another foul on Thomas Douglas as he headed goalwards in the fourth minute saw Kevin Hennessy put us back in front but Mount Sion equalised from a free in the 10th minute. They should have been ahead in the 11th minute but Donal Carey produced probably one of the best saves ever seen at the venue. A superb run and point by Luke Flynn in the 13th minute put us ahead but again it was shortlived as Mount Sion pointed a free in the 14th minute. Good play by Conor Giles-Doran resulted in Kevin Hennessy pointing in the 15th minute to put us 0-12 to 1-8 ahead. Mount Sion equalised in the 18th minute from a sixty five and were back in front a minute later from a free. They added another point before Donal Carey kept us in the game with a superb double save. Mount Sion stretched their lead to three with a 22nd minute free and Kevin Henenssy got what turned out to be our last score in the 25th minute from a sixty five. Mount Sion restored their three point cushion from a sixty five in the 29th minute. We had one last chance when Thomas Douglas was fouled but his free was saved and the final whistle sounded.

Congratulations to Mount Sion on their excellent victory and commiserations to our own lads. Thanks also to the team mentors Willie Power, Jack Duggan, Paudie Brosnan, Pat Twomey, Johnny Walsh, Donal Treacy and Johann Carey on first aid.

Scorers: Kevin Hennessy 0-6 (0-4 frees, 0-1 ’65), Thomas Douglas 0-3,  Luke Flynn 0-2, Sean Power and Dylan Finn 0-1 each.

Panel: Donal Carey, Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan, Peter Grogan, Eoghan Treacy, Luke Walsh, Conor Giles-Doran, Chris Kong, Sean Carton, Luke Flynn, Ian Condon, Kieran Corrigan, Sean Power, Kevin Hennessy, Thomas Douglas, Dylan Finn, Aidan Gannon, Dan Casey, Sean Connolly, Liam Coad, Eoin McGrath-Butler, Jack O’Neill, Ethan Halloran, Craig Ayers, Joshua Campus, Sam Flynn, Colm Maher, Seaghan Walsh, James Cotter.

    1. County Senior Football Relegation Play Off

St. Saviours 2-17 De La Salle 1-9

A poor second half performance saw our senior footballers sponsored by John Kelly Opel well beaten in this relegation play off last Sunday in Walsh Park. We now go back to intermediate status after two years at the top grade. The game was even enough through the first half until St. Saviours got in for a goal in the 23rd minute which gave them the confidence to dominate the second half.

We opened the scoring in the first minute with a point from Eddie Barrett but St. Saviours then scored four in a row between the third and ninth minutes. Two frees from Ian Cantwell after fouls on himself and Lee Hayes in the 11th and 13th minutes narrowed the gap. Points frrom play from Craig Dowling and Ian Cantwell in the 14th and 16th minutes put us back in front 0-5 to 0-4. St. Saviours then scored two points in the 18th and 22nd minutes to regain the lead and took control a minute later with a goal. Stephen Walsh pointed for us in the 24th minute but St. Saviours replied in the 26th minute to lead 1-7 to 0-6 at the interval. St. Saviours came out and added two points in the first two minutes. Ian Cantwell pointed a free in the 4th minute after Conan Watt was fouled but St. Saviours added two further points to lead 1-11 to 0-7 after seven minutes. We had a chance of a goal a minute later but the St. Savours keeper made a fine stop from Kenneth Byrne and they added points in the 10th and 11th minutes. Ian Cantwell pointed a free in the 12th minute after Stephen Daniels was fouled but St. Saviours scored four in a row between the 14th and 20th minutes to lead 1-17 to 0-8. They got their second goal in the 22nd minute when their corner forward, though it mattered little, got away with a fairly obvious foul and raced through unchallenged to score. We goaled ourselves a minute later when David Kennedy set up Ian Cantwell to find the roof of the net. We attacked constantly at this stage but were forced to go for goals without success and we ended the scoring in injury time when Ian Cantwell pointed a free.

Congratulations to St. Saviours on their deserved win and thanks to our mentors John Cummins, Jim Keevers, David Whittle, Ricky Grogan and Joe Kenny on first aid for their efforts during the year.

Scorers: Ian Cantwell 1-6 (0-5 frees), Eddie Barrett, Craig Dowling and  Stephen Walsh 0-1 each.

Panel: David Dennison, Martin Sheehan, Colm Clancy (captain), Christopher Sheehan, Craig Dowling, Oran Keevers, Stephen Walsh, Thomas Kearney, David Greene, Kenneth Byrne, Lee Hayes, Conan Watt, Eddie Barrett, Mitchell Casey, Ian Cantwell, Stephen Daniels, David Kennedy, Donal Barron, Patrick Flynn, James Grogan, Eamonn Dalton, Ryan Duke, Keith Cooney, Micheál Kavanagh, Colm Morris, Paddy Kennedy, Stephen Dalton.

    • County U-16 Hurling Semi Final

De La Salle 4-14 Ballygunner 1-6

An excellent second half performance, in which Thomas Douglas scored a hat trick in six minutes, saw our U-16 hurlers qualify for the county final with a comfortable victory over Ballygunner last Sunday morning in Gracedieu. After a tight first half in which our shooting let us down we took control in the second half after Ian Condon’s goal and were deserving winners.

We opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Thomas Douglas pointed a long range free after Eoghan Treacy was fouled. Ballygunner equalised in the 11th minute but points from Luke Flynn, Sean Power, Thomas Douglas (free), Luke Walsh and Kevin Hennessy between the 13th and 24th minutes had us ahead 0-6 to 0-1. Ballygunner pointed two frees in the 26th and 28th minutes before the excellent Luke Flynn pointed in the 30th minute to see us ahead 0-7 to 0-3 at the break. Ballygunner pointed in the third minute but we replied with another long range free from Thomas Douglas after Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan was fouled in the fifth minute. We took control in the eight minute when Ian Condon got on the end of Luke Flynn’s delivery and first timed the ball to the net. Ballygunner pointed in the ninth minute but a minute later Thomas Douglas won possession from Luke Walsh’s delivery and buried the ball in the net. Aidan Gannon and Thomas Douglas (free) added points before Thomas Douglas hit two goals in the 14th and 16th minutes to leave us ahead 4-10 to 0-5. Thomas Douglas added an excellent point in the 18th minute but Ballygunner replied two minutes later. Kevin Hennessy scored the best point of the game straight from Donal Carey’s puck out and Aidan Gannon added another in the 26th minute after Sam Flynn was fouled. Ballygunner goaled from a free in the 28th minute but a minute later Aidan Gannon ended the scoring from a free after he was fouled himself. We now play Mount Sion in the county final which is scheduled for next Saturday but we have received no official fixture as of yet.

Before the game a minute silence was observed in memory of the late Paul Foley whose son was a member of the Ballygunner team.

Scorers: Thomas Douglas 3-5 (0-4 frees), Aidan Gannon 0-3 (0-2 frees), Ian Condon 1-0, Luke Flynn and

Kevin Hennessy 0-2 each, Sean Power and Luke Walsh 0-1 each.

    • Sarsfields (Cork) U-10 Tournament

After our close encounter earlier this year at the Ballyduff Upper tournament we were invited down to Sarsfields Cork today to compete in the Donal Buckley tournament. Although it was close in Ballyduff the result today was far more comprehensive with us running out overall winners by 19 pts. It just shows how quickly our U-10s are all improving and how important the summer training has been. Well done to all on a fantastic result and a great team performance.

    • County Senior Hurling Relegation Play Off

De La Salle 1-18 Lismore 1-12

Our senior hurlers sponsored by John Kelly Opel maintained their senior status with a six point victory over a battling Lismore side in Fraher Field last Sunday. This was a horrible game for both clubs and we were mighty relieved at the end of it to survive and we commiserate with Lismore on the result.

We began well with a long range free from Bryan Phelan after Stephen Daniels was fouled and a point from play by Jake Dillon inside the first three minutes. Lismore opened their account in the fifth minute but points from Jake Dillon (2), Eddie Barrett and Bryan Phelan had us ahead 0-6 to 0-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Lismore pointed in the 17th minute and Jake Dillon replied from a free a minute later. Lismore pointed again in the 20th minute but we dominated the last ten minutes with points from Jake Dillon, Eddie Barrett (3) and Adam Farrell to lead 0-12 to 0-3 at half time.

The second half began with an exchange of frees involving Jake Dillon. Lismore received a boost in the fourth minute when they were awarded a free for a late tackle and they goaled. They added two further points to trail 0-13 to 1-6 with only seven minutes gone. Jake Dillon pointed frees in the 12th and 16th minutes but Lismore pointed in the 14th, 17th 19th and 22nd minutes to make the score 0-15 to 1-10. Jake Dillon pointed a free in the 24th minute after Johnny Keane was fouled and a minute later Johnny Keane and John Mullane combined to set up Eddie Meaney for an excellent goal from a narrow angle. Credit to Lismore they came back with two points to narrow the gap but we finished the stronger with two late points from Jake Dillon and supersub Eddie Meaney to secure our most important win in years.

Thanks to team manager Ray Murphy, Luke Lalor, Brendan Fennelly and their backroom team for the effort they put in during the year.

Scorers: Jake Dillon 0-10 (0-8 frees), Eddie Barrett 0-4, Eddie Meaney 1-1, Bryan Phelan 0-2 (0-1 free), Adam Farrell 0-1.

Panel: Stevie Brenner, Tom Moran, Ian Flynn, Stephen Daniels, Shane McNulty, Kevin Moran, Thomas Kearney, Eoin Madigan, Bryan Phelan, Eddie Barrett, Jake Dillon, Jack Kennedy, Adam Farrell, John Mullane, Paudie Nevin (captain), Shane Ryan, Eddie Meaney, Jamie Sage, Johnny Keane, Adam O’Sullivan, John Coady, Michael Roche, Oran Keevers, Stephen Dalton, David Greene, Conan Watt, Kenneth Byrne, Brian Cunningham, Kyle Sinnott.

    • County Minor Hurling Semi Final

Cois Brid 0-15 De La Salle 0-11

Our minor hurlers exited the championship when they were beaten by Cois Brid last Wednesday night in Fraher Field. This was a close hard fought encounter, if somewhat low scoring, between two well matched sides for forty minutes but Cois Brid took over in the final period to emerge deserving winners.

We opened well and scored three points in the first seven minutes from Conor Dunphy, Mikey Costigan after a foul on Thomas Douglas and Eddie Meaney. Points in the 13th, 14th and 17th minutes saw Cois Brid level matters. A foul on Eddie Meaney resulted in Mikey Costigan restoring our lead a minute later but Cois Brid equalised in the 20th minute from a sixty five after a fine save by Donal Carey. Cois Brid went ahead for the first time in the 22nd minute but we were level again in the 25th minute when Cormac McCann pointed.

Mikey Costigan put us in front again when Conor Dunphy was fouled in the 27th minute but Cois Brid equalised again in the 30th minute to make it 0-6 each at half time

We began the second half with Thomas Douglas blasting the sliotar inches over the bar after seventeen seconds. Cois Brid again equalised in the third minute but points from Eddie Meaney and Mikey Costigan after a foul on Eddie had us ahead 0-9 to 0-7 after seven minutes. However, that was as good as it got for us as the physically stronger Cois Brid lads took over and scored seven unanswered points between the 10th and 23rd minutes to lead 0-14 to 0-9. Another foul on Eddie Meaney saw Mikey Costigan point in the 25th minute and when Cormac McCann pointed in the 27th minute we had hopes that we might snatch a draw. It was not to be and Cois Brid made the game save with an injury time point.

Well done to Cois Brid and we wish them well in the county final and commiserations to our own lads. Thanks to our mentors Peter Hearne, Jamie Power, Pat Dunphy, Stevie Brenner, Johnny Keane and to Johann Carey on first aid for their efforts throughout the year.

Scorers: Mikey Costigan 0-5 (frees), Eddie Meaney and Cormac McCann 0-2 each, Conor Dunphy and Thomas Douglas 0-1 each.

Hard luck to our U-16 girls who played their County A Final on last Thursday in Walsh Park. This was a cracker of a game played at a hectic pace with plenty of skill and committment on show over the hour of camogie by both sides. De La Salle led 3-5 to 1-6 at half time. Our opponents Gailltir came out strongly in the 2nd half and ran out winners 4-9 (21) to 3-18 (27). Well done to the girls for the committment shown throughout the year to training and games. It was great to see Caoimhe back on the playing field again after last years injury lay off.

    • Senior Hurling Relegation Play-Off

Next Sunday at 5.30pm in Fraher Field we play the most important game in our clubs history for many years when we take on Lismore for the right to play in the 2016 senior hurling championship. We would ask all our supporters to make the journey to Dungarvan to cheer on the lads and we wish the players and management the very best for this encounter.

    • Senior Football Championship Round 5

As we were under the impression that the last round of group football championship matches would be played simultaneously we were somewhat surprised to learn we were fixed to play The Nire in a stand alone game next Tuesday night in Fraher Field some 24 hours before the minor hurling semi final. Unfortunately, through a combination of injuries, the minor semi final, holidays and players either working or in college away from home we disappointingly found ourselves unable to field a team in what was anyway in effect a meaningless fixture for us. We now await to see who our opponents will be in the relegation play off.

    • Minor Hurling Semi Final

Next Wednesday we play Cois Brid in Fraher Field at 7.30pm in the county semi final. Having beaten us last week in the final group game Cois Brid, who were U-16 county champions two years ago, will start favourites for this game but we are hoping that our lads can re-discover their early season form and qualify for what would be our fifth final in six years. We again ask our supporters to make the effort to attend this game.

    • County U-14 Hurling Division 2 Quarter Final

De La Salle 4-13 An Gaeltacht 1-1

Our U-14 hurlers qualified the Division 2 county semi final with an emphatic win over a depleted An Gaeltacht side in Gracedieu on Wednesday last. Early goals by Darren Keneally (2) and Lorcan Kerry saw us storm into an early lead which we never relinquished. A good spread of points throughout the team aided by another goal from Jack Stickel saw us lead 4-6 to 1-0 at half time.

Whilst we added no further goals in the second half we added seven points to run out comfortable winners.

We now play the semi final this Monday 21st September v Mount Sion in Mount Sion at 6.15pm. All support welcome

Panel: Daire Treacy, Ben Coady, Evan Drohan, David Ryan, Conor Murphy, Dean Casey, Alex Keane, Harry Lawton, Eamonn Brosnan, Lorcan Kerry, Darren Keneally, Nathan Finn, Rueben Halloran, Jack Stickel, Aaron Wymberry, Vincent Fleming, Adam O’Brien, Adam Stacey, Sean Treacy, Josh Kelly.

      • County Senior Hurling Championship

Fourmilewater 1-18 De La Salle 1-7

Our senior hurlers sponsored by John Kelly Opel will now play Lismore in a final attempt to avoid relegation to intermediate ranks after an abysmal display against Fourmilewater in Fraher Field last Saturday. It is fair to say that at the start of the championship neither Lismore or ourselves envisaged this scenario but we must now rediscover our confidence and battling qualities in two weeks time if we are to survive in senior ranks.

Playing with the wind we went behind in the first minute but Paudie Nevin equalised a minute later. Fourmilewater pointed twice before Jake Dillon reduced the arrears after a foul on Paudie Nevin. Fourmilewater pointed in the 13th minute but Jake Dillon replied in the 15th minute after John Mullane was fouled to make it 0-4 to 0-3. There was no further scoring until Fourmilewater pointed in the 29th minute but we then hit a  purple patch in injury time when first Kevin Moran pointed and then we goaled when Jamie Sage rose highest to flick a centre from Kevin Moran to the net. We ended the half with Eddie Meaney pointing to lead 1-5 to 0-5 at the break.

Fourmilewater began the second half with two points before Jamie Sage opened our account in the 9th minute. However, Fourmilewater goaled a minute later and added three points. Jake Dillon pointed in the 15th minute and we trailed 1-10 to 1-7. We were not to score again though as Fourmilewater scored eight unanswered points to ease to victory.

Scorers: Jamie Sage 1-1, Jake Dillon 0-3 (0-2 frees), Paudie Nevin, Kevin Moran and Eddie Meaney 0-1 each.

      • County U-15 Football Final

De La Salle 2-6 Ballinacourty 1-4

Well done to our U-15 footballers who won the inaugural county championship at this level with a surprise victory over an an excellent Ballinacourty side at Fraher Field on Saturday last. This was a hard fought contest between two committed sides. Ballinacourty opened brightly and were a goal up inside five minutes. We responded with a goal by Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan and a point by Aidan Gannon. We stretched our lead with another Aidan Gannon point but Ballinacourty responded with two points of their own to level proceedings. However, an excellent goal by Eamonn Brosnan following good work by Seaghan Walsh and a further Gannon point saw us lead at half time on a score of 2-3 to 1-2. The second half was a a real battle with Ballinacourty getting an early point and really piling on the pressure. However our lads weathered the storm and an exchange of points between the excellent Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan and Ballinacourty saw us maintain our three point advantage, before two late points by Eamonn Brosnan and Aidan Gannon saw us emerge victorious.

Sam Flynn became the first player to accept this trophy on behalf of the team.

Scorers Aidan Gannon 0-4, Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan and Eamonn Brosnan 1-1 each.

Panel: Dan Casey, Sam Flynn, Ethan O’Halloran, Niall O’Keefe, Dylan Finn, Dean Casey, Seaghan Walsh, Sean Connolly, Liam Coad, Kevin Hennessy, Neil Madigan, Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan, Aidan Gannon, Eamonn Brosnan, Harry Lawton, Josh Campus, James Cotter, Darren Kenneally, Nathan Finn, Rueben O’Halloran.

      • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Semi Final

Dunhill 3-14 De La Salle 1-18

Our junior hurlers were beaten by Dunhill in the semi final of the championship in Kill last Saturday. Earlier in the year we had beaten Dunhill but they had a stronger side on duty last Saturday and their ability to get goals, on a day when we were without our full back David Sutton, proved to be decisive in the end.

Dunhill made a great start with a goal in the third minute but we were level two minutes later when Conor Dunphy’s shot came back off the post and Cormac McCann was on hand to finish to the net. Dunhill regained the lead but points from Eamonn Fitzgerald and Cormac McCann put us ahead in the ninth minute. Dunhill replied with three points and a 14th minute goal saw them lead 2-4 to 1-2 at the end of the first quarter. Points from Mikey Costigan and Cormac McCann reduced the arrears to three but we were out of luck in the 20th minute when Conor Dunphy set up Eamonn Fitzgerald to double the ball to the net but it was ruled out for a square infringement. Points from Luke Lalor and Conor Dunphy were cancelled out by the 25th minute as were two points from Cormac McCann as we entered injury time where points from Mikey Costigan and Conor Dunphy saw us trail 2-8 to 1-10 at the interval.

Dunhill got the first score of the second half in the second minute when they pointed but Luke Lalor replied a minute later. However, the vital score came in the sixth minute when Dunhill got their third goal. Two points from Luke Lalor and one form Gavin Coppinger were all cancelled out and we trailed 3-12 to 1-14 midway through the half. Another double exchange of points involving Mikey Costigan and Niall O’Sullivan and a further two points from Mikey Costigan reduced the arrears to two points in injury time. We had one last chance when we were awarded a free in but Mikey Costigan’s effort was saved on the line and the final whistle sounded.

Scorers: Cormac McCann 1-4, Mikey Costigan 0-5 (0-4 frees), Luke Lalor 0-4, Conor Dunphy 0-2, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Gavin Coppinger and Niall O’Sullivan 0-1 each.

Panel: Conor Bohane, Ryan Duke, Willie Power, Mark Joy-Kinsella, Kieran O’Donohoe, Darragh Fitzpatrick (captain), Jeff Cahill, Christopher Sheehan, Gavin Coppinger, Eoin Casey, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Mikey Costigan, Cormac McCann, Luke Lalor, Conor Dunphy, Niall O’Sullivan, Tom Crotty, Micheál Kavanagh, Keith Deasy, Evan Deegan, Philip Burke, Jack O’Donohoe, James Quinlan, Barry Murphy.

Cois Brid 2-20 De La Salle 2-16

An away trip to Knockanore to play Cois Brid concluded the group phase of this year’s minor championship. With a semi final spot hanging in the balance we knew a win would guarantee us a place in the last four. Less than twenty seconds into the game Eddie Meaney found the net and got us off to the perfect start. Cois Brid responded immediately and levelled the scores after two minutes. We threated to develop a healthy lead at times during the first half. However, Cois Brid narrowed the gap on each occasion and we went in at the break with a three point lead. Early second half scores from Jeff Cahill, Cormac McCann and Mikey Costigan kept us narrowly ahead. Midway through the half Cois Brid found the net and began to take control of the game. Although we responded with a Thomas Douglas goal we ended up falling short. With other results going in our favour, we did secure a semi final where we play Cois Brid again. This game takes place on Wednesday 23rd September in Fraher Field, throw in 7.30pm.

Panel: Donal Carey, Conor Hogan, Lee Wall, Chris Kong, Craig Dowling, Michael Roche, Evan Whelan, Eddie Meaney, Conor Dunphy, Gavin Coppinger, Jeff Cahill, Luke Walsh, Cormac McCann, Thomas Douglas, Mikey Costigan, James Stone, Peter Grogan, Tom Crotty, Adam Hayes, David Hogan, Luke Flynn, Shaun O’Brien, Conor Giles-Doran.

    • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Quarter Final

De La Salle 3-18 Butlerstown 1-8

Our junior hurlers qualified for the semi final of the championship when they had  a surprisingly comfortable victory over Butlerstown in Roanmore last Saturday in what was a reversal of the result of the first round meeting between the same teams. This was a game in which we led throughout and try as hard as Butlerstown did the they were never able to get close enough to trouble our lads.

We opened well scoring three points in the first three minutes through Mikey Costigan, Conor Dunphy and Mikey Costigan again from a free after the outstanding Eamonn Fitzgerald was fouled. Butlerstown opened their account with a point in the sixth minute but we replied with points from Eamonn Fitzgerald and another Mikey Costigan free after a foul on Darragh Fitzpatrick. Butlerstown pointed in the 13th minute and we led 0-5 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter. A foul on Eoin Casey saw Mikey Costigan convert another free and Eamonn Fitzgerald followed with two from play before Mikey Costigan pointed two further frees after fouls on Ryan Duke and Christopher Sheehan to see us lead 0-10 to 0-2 after twenty five minutes. Butlerstown got a boost a minute later when they goaled but we replied with Mikey Costigan pointing again from a free after Eamonn Fitzgerald was fouled. Luke Lalor added a point in injury time and then Cormac McCann set up Eamonn Fitzgerald for our first goal to see us ahead 1-12 to 1-2 at the interval.

Butlerstown got the first score of the second half in the sixth minute when they pointed but Eamonn Fitzgerald replied a minute later. Fouls on Luke Lalor and Eamonn Fitzgerald saw Mikey Costigan add two more points in the 9th and 15th minutes to make it 1-15 to 1-3. Cormac McCann then pointed and another foul on Luke Lalor saw Mikey Costigan add one more. Eamonn Fitzgerald got in for his second goal when he got on the end of Micheál Kavanagh’s delivery to crash the ball to the net. Gavin Coppinger pointed to make it 2-18 to 1-3 with ten minutes left. Credit to Butlerstown they kept battling and scored four points between the 22nd and 25th minutes. However, a minute later we got our third goal when Micheál Kavanagh ran on to Gavin Coppinger’s delivery and beat the keeper with a ground stroke. Butlerstown ended the scoring with a point in the 28th minute.

We now play Dunhill in the semi final next Saturday afternoon in Kill at 1.30pm.

Scorers: Eamonn Fitzgerald 2-4, Mikey Costigan 0-10 (0-9 frees), Micheál Kavanagh 1-0, Conor Dunphy, Luke Lalor, Cormac McCann and  Gavin Coppinger 0-1 each.

Ballyduff Upper 1-17 De La Salle 1-15

Our senior hurlers sponsored by John Kelly Opel suffered a major setback in the championship when we were beaten by Ballyduff Upper in Fraher Field last Saturday night. This was a game that was very much there for the winning but an abject display of shooting ensured that we contrived to leave the much needed points behind us. We had built up an eight point lead in the first quarter but then conceded 1-9 without reply to trail by four at half time. We trailed by six with twenty minutes to go but even though we dominated possession for the last period our wide count, which was registered as 29 in total, ensured we did not breach the gap. Two late goal chances which struck the crossbar and the goalkeeper respectively probably best summed up our dismal night.

With Bryan Phelan, Jack Kennedy and Stephen Dalton unavailable through injury, we began well with two points from Jake Dillon frees in the first three minutes. Ballyduff Upper opened their account a minute later but points from Adam Farrell, John Keane and Jake Dillon had us ahead 0-5 to 0-1 after ten minutes. Ballyduff Upper pointed in the 11th minute but further points from Eddie Meaney and John Mullane made it 0-7 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter. We goaled in the 16th minute when Paudie Nevin beat the goalkeeper to John Mullane’s delivery and planted the ball in the empty net. Ballyduff Upper then started winning some possession and our discipline failed us as we conceded five points from frees and one from play to lead 1-7 to 0-8 after twenty five minutes. Ballyduff Upper then goaled before hitting three further points in injury time to put them ahead 1-11 to 1-7 at half time.

Ballyduff Upper began the second half with two points before Paudie Nevin opened our account in the 10th minute. Three Jake Dillon frees between the 13th and 17th minutes made it 1-13 to 1-11 but Ballyduff Upper pointed a minute later. Another Jake Dillon free and a point from Jamie Sage reduced the margin to the minimum in the 23rd minute. Ballyduff Upper stretched it to two in the 25th minute and in the 29th minute Jake Dillon’s shot for goal hit the top of the crossbar and went over. Finding inspiration from the let off our opponents added two points in the 30th and 32nd minutes to go three clear. We had one last chance when from the puckout Eoin Madigan got possession but his shot hit the goalkeepers’ leg and went just outside the post for a sixty five. Our short sixty five eventually came to Shane McNulty whose attempt cleared the crossbar and the game was over.

Scorers: Jake Dillon 0-8 (0-6 frees), Paudie Nevin 1-1, Adam Farrell, John Keane, John Mullane, Eddie Meaney, Jamie Sage and Shane McNulty 0-1 each.

Panel: Stevie Brenner, Tom Moran, Ian Flynn, Stephen Daniels, David Greene, Kevin Moran, Shane McNulty, Eddie Barrett, Jake Dillon, Paudie Nevin (captain), John Keane, Adam Farrell, Eoin Madigan, John Mullane, Eddie Meaney, Jamie Sage, John Coady, Jack McCarthy, Brian Cunningham, Thomas Kearney, Kenneth Byrne, Adam O’Sullivan, Shane Ryan, Michael Roche, Colm Morris, Bryan Phelan, Jack Kennedy, Stephen Dalton, Conan Watt.

    • Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs East Intermediate Hurling Quarter Final

Portlaw 2-17 De La Salle 1-11

At the end of a bad seven days our intermediate hurlers exited the championship when they were beaten by a superior Portlaw side in Walsh Park last Sunday. Portlaw led this game from the start and our young side never got going at any stage with the result never in doubt after the first quarter.

Portlaw opened the scoring with two early points. Shane Ryan was on target for us in the seventh minute. Portlaw added three points before a foul on Thomas Kearney saw Brian Cunningham score our second. Portlaw replied immediately but points from Thomas Kearney and Stephen Jacob saw us trail 0-6 to 0-4 after fifteen minutes. Portlaw then took over and scored 1-3 in nine minutes. Brian Cunningham pointed a free in the 27th minute but Portlaw added two more before Brian ended the first half scoring with another free to make it 1-11 to 0-6.

The first thirteen minutes of the second half saw both teams add three points to their tally with ours coming from Colm Morris, Michael Roche and Brian Cunningham. Another point from Brian Cunningham and one from Shane Ryan made it 1-14 to 0-11 with twelve minutes to go. However, that was as good as it got and Portlaw pointed twice in the 21st and 22nd minutes before being gifted a goal in the 24th minute. Two minutes into injury time Michael Roche goaled for us from a free and there was still time for Portlaw to add a last point.

We would like to thank Alan Kelly in his first year as manager and his selectors Darren Casey and Philip Burke along with their backroom team for the effort they put in this year.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-5 (frees), Michael Roche 1-1 (1-0 free), Shane Ryan 0-2, Thomas Kearney, Stephen Jacob and Colm Morris 0-1 each.

Panel: Kyle Sinnott, Martin Sheehan, Kenneth Byrne, Adam Doyle, Lee Wall, Jack McCarthy, Craig Dowling, Patrick Flynn, Matthew Barden, Dylan Foley, Thomas Kearney, Colm Morris, Brian Cunningham, Stephen Jacob, Shane Ryan, Michael Roche, Lee Hayes, James Stone, Evan Whelan, Barry Twomey, Conan Watt, Robert Daniels, Donal Barron, Conor Bohane, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Jeff Cahill, Ryan Duke, Gavin Coppinger, Cormac McCann, Conor Dunphy.

    • County Senior Football Championship

Clashmore 3-18 De La Salle 1-4

Our senior footballers sponsored by John Kelly Opel were comprehensively beaten by Clashmore in Fraher Field last week. Despite a reasonable start by our lads the game as a contest was over when Clashmore goaled twice in the 16th and 17th minutes. It was clear throughout this game that whereas we have several players capable of playing at senior level we do not appear to have either the fitness levels required or the teamwork to survive as a unit against the serious senior teams.

Still without players like Oran Keevers, Ian Cantwell and Paddy Kennedy with Stephen Dalton and Mitchell Casey returning off the bench which in Stephen’s case saw him unable to finish we started reasonably well and points from Conan Watt and Colm Morris saw us trail 0-3 to 0-2 after eleven minutes. Clashmore added points in the 12th and 15th minutes and followed with two goals in the 16th and 17th minutes. We then deployed a sweeper and restricted them to a solitary point over the next twelve minutes but then conceded four points between the 29th and 31st minutes to trail 2-10 to 0-2 at the break.

The pattern continued in the second half with Clashmore adding four further points between the 2nd and 6th minutes. We got a boost in the 8th minute when David Kennedy and Lee Hayes combined for Kenneth Byrne to goal. However this was cancelled out three minutes later when Clashmore capitalised on an error to get their third goal. They added three points between the 12th and 18th minutes before Colm Morris and David Kennedy replied for us in the 23rd and 24th minutes. Clashmore ended the scoring with a point in the 28th minute.

Scorers: Kenneth Byrne 1-0, Colm Morris 0-2, Conan Watt and David Kennedy 0-1 each.

Panel: David Dennison, Martin Sheehan, Colm Clancy (captain), Craig Dowling, David Kennedy, Kenneth Byrne, Christopher Sheehan, Thomas Kearney, David Greene, Stephen Walsh, Lee Hayes, Colm Morris, Conan Watt, Patrick Flynn, Donal Barron, Stephen Dalton, Mitchell Casey, James Grogan, Michael Roche, Eamonn Dalton.

De La Salle 2-9 Passage 1-12

A goal from a free four minutes into time injury gave Passage a deserved draw in this fifth round minor hurling championship game played in Passage last Thursday. This was a hard fought game throughout with both sides having periods of dominance but after Eddie Meaney goaled four minutes from time to put us ahead we spurned three goood chances to make the game safe before the late equaliser.
Passage opened well and scored two points in the first three minutes. Points both from play and a free by Mikey Costigan levelled matters by the sixth minute. Passage regained the lead in the 10th minute but three minutes later we were in front when after Craig Dowling was fouled, Michael Roche’s long range free was caught by Thomas Douglas who blasted the sliotar to the roof of the net. Two fouls on Mikey Costigan in the 17th and 20th minutes saw him convert both frees but three late points from Passage reduced our lead to 1-4 to 0-6 at half time. The third quarter was again tight as we added three points through Mikey Costigan (free), Jeff Cahill and Thomas Douglas while Passage added two in reply to see us lead 1-7 to 0-8 midway through the half.
Passage then hit three ponts in a row between the 18th and 21st minutes to take a one point lead. Cormac McCann equalised in the 24th minute but Passage regained the lead a minute later. We were back in front almost immediately when Cormac McCann found Eddie Meaney who shot into the far corner of the net.
James Stone addded a point with three minute of normal time left but deep into injury time we conceded a free and Passage got that goal to share the points.
Scorers: Mikey Costigan 0-5 (0-4 frees), Thomas Douglas 1-1, Eddie Meaney 1-0, Jeff Cahill, Cormac McCann and James Stone 0-1 each.
