    • Eddie O’Donnell Monumental Works East U-21 Hurling Championship Final 2015

De La Salle 0-18 Mount Sion 1-14
Well done to our U-21 hurlers who are 2015 eastern champions after defeating Mount Sion by the narrowest of margins in an entertaining and sporting final played in Carriganore last Thursday night. This was a great win for our lads given that apart from the already absent injury casualties Eddie Meaney and Robert Daniels we also had to line out without three of the team that had won the semi final in Jack McCarthy, Adam Doyle and Dylan Foley, but the lads that came in played their part in seeing us through. Mention also to Stephen Dalton who had an another excellent game despite having dislocated a couple of fingers playing for the county U-21 footballers a few days earlier. Great credit must go to both sets of players for producing the game they did given the time of year and the recent weather conditions. It was a game that the result was in doubt up to the finish with Mount Sion having slightly the better of the first half and our lads getting their noses in front in the second half only for Mount Sion to come with a late goal which made us mighty relieved to hear the final whistle. There was great delight after the game when board chairman Michael Wadding and sponsor Eddie O’Donnell presented both the Liam O’Donnell Memorial Cup and the man of the match award to our outstanding captain Shane McNulty.
Congratulations to our lads, manager Bryan Phelan, selectors Ian Flynn, Stevie Brenner, Barry Murphy and Martin Doyle, Joe Kenny on first aid and the rest of the back room members. Commiserations also to a gallant Mount Sion team.
We opened the scoring in the first minute when Shane Ryan converted after Adam Farrell was fouled. Mount Sion replied with points in the second and seventh minutes before Mikey Costigan set up Adam Farrell to equalise in the 13th minute. Mount Sion regained the lead in the 18th minute but Shane Ryan levelled it again in the 20th minute after he was fouled himself. Mount Sion then took over and pointed in the 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 27th minutes to lead 0-7 to 0-3. It was at this stage that Bryan Phelan made a vital switch moving Shane McNulty to midfield and Tom Moran to centre back with both players going on to dominate their new positions. Two points from both play and a free by Shane Ryan and one from play by Shane McNulty after good work by Mikey Costigan between the 28th and 31st minutes saw us trail 0-7 to 0-6 at the interval. The second half began with a Mount Sion point in the first minute. Brian Cunningham replied a minute later and it was all square after four minutes when Shane Ryan sent over a free after a foul on James Stone. Mount Sion regained the lead in the eight minute as the tempo and the excitement increased but Adam O’Sullivan equalised almost immediately. Again Mount Sion went ahead in the 10th minute but points from Shane McNulty from a play and a free had us ahead with Mount Sion replying to make it 0-11 each by the 13th minute. A foul on Adam Farrell saw Shane Ryan put us ahead in the 15th minute. Then came a decisive passage of play when Shane McNulty pointed a long range free in the 17th minute after Craig Dowling was fouled before catching the resultant puckout and racing through to score a point which put us 0-14 to 0-11 ahead. Mount Sion reduced the arrears in the 20th minute only for Shane McNulty to point again in the 23rd minute. Mount Sion replied in the 24th minute but two frees from Shane Ryan after fouls on Jeff Cahill and Adam Farrell had us ahead 0-17 to 0-13 with twenty eight minutes played. A Mount Sion free in the 30th minute was replied to a minute later by Shane Ryan before Mount Sion struck for the game’s only goal in the 32nd minute. A further two additional minutes saw us hold out for the win.
The county final was fixed for Sunday morning but it was no secret that having had to replace a few more players through injury during the eastern final we were struggling to find fifteen fit players for the game. We requested a postponement and were relieved when the bad weather made such a decision inevitable.
Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-9 (0-8 frees), Shane McNulty 0-6 (0-2 frees), Adam Farrell, Brian Cunningham and Adam O’Sullivan 0-1 each.
Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Evan Whelan, Lee Wall, Craig Dowling, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Shane McNulty, Stephen Dalton, Tom Moran, Gavin Coppinger, Adam O’Sullivan, Adam Farrell, Mikey Costigan, James Stone, Shane Ryan, Brian Cunningham, Michael Roche, Jeff Cahill, Cormac McCann, Robert Daniels, Eddie Meaney Jack McCarthy, Adam Doyle, Dylan Foley.

Unfortunately once again the East U-21 hurling final v Mount Sion fell victim to the weather and had to be postponed on Saturday night due to an unplayable pitch in Carriganore. The game will now be played in January.

    • Annual General Meeting

The AGM took place last Friday in Gracedieu and the main news to come out of it was the decision of Owen Dunphy to stand down as chairman after three years at the helm with former chairman Seamus Quirke returning to the hotseat. Otherwise it was no change for the rest of the top table.

The secretarys report showed that overall it was a disappointing year and with only the U-21 hurling to complete, no adult trophies have so far come to the club. Both our senior teams ended up in relegation play offs with our footballers losing their status after two years but fortunately our hurlers stayed up.

At under age we reached both county U-16 finals but were out of luck in the two. Our U-15 footballers won the inaugural county and eastern titles. Our U-12 hurlers shared the city league title with Ballygunner and our U-10 hurlers won the Ballyduff Upper tournament for the first time.

In his final address as chairman Owen Dunphy thanked all those who had helped him over the last three years and spoke about the continuing need to remain financially viable. He requested everyone to continue to support any fundraisers held as well as the Deise Draw, Lotto, the Gracedieu scheme and to pay their membership to ensure we can pay our way.

He thanked the management of the senior football and intermediate hurling teams who have stepped down. He complimented all the players who had represented Waterford at various levels and those club members who were involved as mentors with particular mention of all those involved in the National Hurling League win.

The following officers were elected for 2016, President Br. Killian, Chairman: Seamus Quirke, Vice-Chairman Alan Duke, Secretary: Olivia Russell, Treasurer: Tom O’Leary, Assistant Treasurer: Joey Carton, P.R.O: John Sheehan, Games Administration Committee Chairman: TBC, Field Committee: Billy O’Neill, Players Representative: Thomas Kearney, County Board Delegate: Seamus Quirke, East Board Delegate: Billy O‘Neill, Insurance Officer: Leanne Sheehan, Juvenile Chairman: Paudie Brosnan, Childrens Welfare Officer: Brendan Lawton, Irish Officer: Mick Kavanagh.

De La Salle 0-16 Ballygunner 1-12

Our U-21 hurlers qualified for the eastern final with victory by the narrowest of margins over Ballygunner in another hard fought contest last Saturday in Carriganore. This was a game that could have gone either way but in the end man of the match Shane Ryan came up with the winner in injury time. Great credit is due to both sets of players who played the two games in exemplary fashion and fortunately for us it came right at the end. Going into this game Ballygunner were again without one of their key players while we were without Eddie Meaney and Robert Daniels but on this occasion Michael Roche was deemed fit enough to be introduced in the second half which was to prove significant. On the day we had outstanding displays from Shane Ryan, Shane McNulty, Stephen Dalton and Tom Moran with Dylan Foley, Adam Doyle and Lee Wall not far behind.

We opened the scoring in the first minute when Shane Ryan converted after Mikey Costigan was fouled and he added a second from play in the fifth minute after good work by Stephen Dalton. Ballygunner opened their account from a free in the seventh minute but two points from Mikey Costigan and another Shane Ryan free after he was fouled himself made it 0-5 to 0-1 with ten minutes played. Ballygunner pointed a free in the 13th minute but Gavin Coppinger replied immediately to make it 0-6 to 0-2 at the midway point. Shane Ryan sent over another free in the 16th minute after Adam O’Sullivan was fouled but Ballygunner replied in the 18th minute. Shane Ryan pointed again in the 22nd minute but again Ballygunner’s reply was immediate. Dylan Foley pointed in the 24th minute and Ballygunner ended the first half scoring in the 26th minute from a free to leave us ahead 0-9 to 0-5 at the interval. We began the second half with a fine move involving Stephen Dalton, Tom Moran and Dylan Foley which was finished by Shane Ryan. However, Ballygunner then took over and pointed two frees in the second and fifth minutes followed by a point from play in the sixth minute. They took the lead two minutes later when they scored the only goal of the two games but Adam Farrell equalised straight away. Ballygunner regained the lead in the 11th minute. Adam O’Sullivan’s equaliser in the 13th minute was sandwiched in between two goal opportunities we failed to take advantage of. Ballygunner pointed in the 15th minute to make it 1-10 to 0-12 as we entered the final quarter. Shane McNulty pointed a free from distance in the 21st minute after Adam Doyle was fouled and a minute later Shane Ryan put us ahead. Back came Ballygunner to equalise in the 26th minute and to go ahead in the 28th minute. Our response was instant with rock solid goalkeeper Shaun O’Brien picking out Shane McNulty with his puck out and Shane giving it to Michael Roche for an excellent point. We won it in injury time when Shane Ryan gathered possession but was fouled twice and with the referee’s hand in the air signalling advantage he shot wide so we came back for the free. This time Shane made no mistake and we saw the additional out to ensure our progress.

We now face Mount Sion in the final for the Liam O’Donnell Memorial Cup next weekend. At the time of writing there is no official fixture but we have requested the game be played on Sunday as we have players doing exams out of town on Saturday.

Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-8 (0-4 frees), Mikey Costigan 0-2, Gavin Coppinger, Dylan Foley, Adam Farrell, Adam O’Sullivan, Shane McNulty (free) and Michael Roche 0-1 each.

Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Lee Wall, Jack McCarthy, Adam Doyle, Craig Dowling, Shane McNulty, Stephen Dalton, Tom Moran, Gavin Coppinger, Adam Farrell, Dylan Foley, Mikey Costigan, Brian Cunningham, Adam O’Sullivan, Shane Ryan, Michael Roche, James Stone, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Micheál Kavanagh, Jeff Cahill, Evan Whelan, Adam Hayes, Robert Daniels, Eddie Meaney.

De La Salle 0-15 Ballygunner 0-15 (after extra time)

Our U-21 hurlers must do it all over again as even extra time failed to seperate ourselves and Ballygunner in a hard fought contest last Thursday night in Carriganore. This game was a credit to both sets of players who battled bravely in tough conditions. Even though eighteen of the thirty scores came from placed balls the game got very exciting near the closing stages and throughout extra time with both teams having chances to wn the game but a draw was definitely a fair result on the night. The teams will go again probably the weekend of the 29th November. The first half was tame enough with the sides level on four occasions. When Ballygunner opend up a four point lead in the third quarter we looked in trouble but led by the outstanding Shane McNulty, Tom Moran and Shane Ryan we drew level with four minutes to go and from there to the end it was nip and tuck.

Ballygunner opened the scoring in the fifth minute but we replied with points from Brian Cunningham and Adam O’Sullivan in the seventh and ninth minutes. Ballygunner then hit four points in a row between the tenth and nineteenth minutes to lead 0-5 to 0-2. Having earlier hit some poor wides we found our touch between the 20th and 25th minutes with points from Adam Farrell (2) and Brian Cunningham to level matters. Ballygunner regained the lead in the first minute of injury time but we replied immediately with another Brian Cunnigham free to make it 0-6 each at half time. The third quarter belonged to Ballygunner as they shot four points and we hit another four wides. We fought back and five unanswered points from Shane Ryan between the 17th and 27th minutes had us ahead by one. Back came Ballygunner and points in the 31st and 33rd minutes put them in front again before Shane Ryan equalised in the 34th minute to send us to extra time. Ballygunner pointed two minutes into extra time but we responded with points from Mikey Costigan and James Stone in the fourth and fifth minutes. Ballygunner pointed in the eight minute to leave it 0-14 each at the break. In the first minute of the second period Ballygunner regained the lead but Shane Ryan equalised in the sixth minute and neither side could then get in for the decisive score.

Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-7 (0-5 frees), Brian Cunningham 0-3 (frees), Adam Farrell 0-2, Adam O’Sullivan, Mikey Costigan and James Stone 0-1 each.

Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Lee Wall, Jack McCarthy, Adam Doyle, Craig Dowling, Shane McNulty, Stephen Dalton, Tom Moran, Gavin Coppinger, Brian Cunningham, Adam Farrell, Dylan Foley, Mikey Costigan, Adam O’Sullivan, Shane Ryan, James Stone, Evan Whelan, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Jeff Cahill, Micheál Kavanagh, Adam Hayes, Michael Roche, Robert Daniels, Eddie Meaney.

    • East Junior Football Semi Final

Ferrybank 3-8 De La Salle 2-5

Our junior footballers exited at the semi final stage of the championship when we down to Ferrybank in Carriganore last Wednesday. This was a game we lost in the first half, when playing with a strong wind, we spurned two goal scoring chances and gifted a goal to our opponents. We also lost two key forwards to injuries and two players to black cards during the game but overall there was no question but that Ferrybank were the better side and deserving winners.

We started slowly and it was seven minutes before Joey Twomey opened our account with a point. However, in the 12th minute we were awarded a free out in our full back line but it went astray and Ferrybank goaled. Ferrybank added points in the 14th and 16th minutes and got their second goal in the 20th minute. Our lads improved and John Mullane placed Adam O’Sullivan for a point in the 24th minute. Joey Twomey scored twice in the 29th and 32nd minutes to see us trail 2-2 to 0-4 at the interval.

Our lads came out battling and in the second minute Joey Twomey goaled after good work by Micheál Kavanagh, Adam Deegan and Dylan Foley. We were level a minute later when Peter O’Hagan set up Joey Twomey for a point. However injuries to both Joey Twomey and Adam O’Sullivan took the sting out of our attack and Ferrybank regained control again. They hit five unanswered points between the 6th and 14th minutes to lead 2-7 to 1-5. They got a third goal in the 16th minute when after a defensive error one of our players put the ball in his own net while attempting to clear. They added a point before David Farrell and Dylan Foley combined for Keith Cooney, making a welcome return after a two year enforced absence, to crack the ball to the roof of the net to end the scoring.

Best wishes to Ferrybank in the final and thanks to our players and mentors for their efforts during the year.

Scorers: Joey Twomey 1-4, Keith Cooney 1-0, Adam O’Sullivan 0-1.

    • County Junior Camogie Champions

De La Salle 3-12 Ferrybank 0-2

Pride of place this week goes to our junior camogie team who were crowned champions at the first time of asking last Saturday in Walsh Park. This was a brilliant result for the club given it was our first time to enter a team at ault level and that 12 of the team that were crowned minor champions a few weeks ago lined out in this game and that the actual winning team consisted of fourteen teenagers plus the latest Cork addition to the club the excellent Majella McCarthy. This was a superb team effort but once again special mention has to be made of Beth Carton who despite being double marked scored 3-8 of which 3-4 came from play. There was also excellent displays from the likes of Taylor Healy who played the sweeper role so intelligently and Brianna O’Regan who kept a clean sheet and whose long distance striking set up many attacks, but overall it was a win for a seriously committed bunch of fine young players

    •  East Junior Football Quarter Final

De La Salle 4-8 Naomh Pól 3-7

Our junior footballers qualified for the semi final of this championship with a hard earned victory over Naomh Pól in a close and entertaining game in Carriganore last Thursday. We were the better team in the first half but Naomh Pól dominated the second half before a late 1-1 won the game for us.

Naomh Pól got off to a great start when they goaled in the fourth minute but points from Barry Twomey, Adam O’Sullivan and Eoin Casey had us level by the ninth minute. We took the lead in the 10th minute when Joey Twomey set up Barry Twomey for a well taken goal and we got our second goal in the 16th minute when John Mullane and Eamonn Fitzgerald created the chance for Joey Twomey to crash the ball to the net. Naomh Pól got themselves back in the game with a point in the 18th minute and a goal two minutes later to make it 2-3 to 2-1. We got back on top with a superb goal from Adam Deegan in the 26th minute and two Adam O’Sullivan frees after fouls on himself stretched our lead but on the stroke of half time Naomh Pól got their third goal to leave it 3-5 to 3-1 at the break. Naomh Pól started the second half strongly and three points in the first nine minutes reduced the lead to the minimum. We got our first score of the half in the 11th minute when Joey Twomey pointed. Naomh Pól pointed in the 13th minute before Joey Twomey pointed again in the 17th minute. Two Naomh Pól points in the 20th and 25th minutes levelled the game at 3-7 each. The game was decided a minute later when Adam Deegan found minor debutant Ciaran Brady who kept his cool and rounded the keeper to finish to the empty net. Joey Twomey added the insurance point in the final minute.

Well done & congratulations to our Junior Girls on a fantastic win in their County Championship Final played in Walsh Park on Sat 24th October. Result DLS 3-12 Ferrybank 0-2. Played on a fine surface no space was afforded by both teams in the opening half. Playing against a slight breeze we led at half time 0-3 to 0-1. The half time break and team talk gave us time to regroup. From the opening whistle in the second half the girls were determined to push on, which they did showing the skills and committment they have shown throughout this campaign. When the final whistle was sounded it was befitting for this group of girls who have shown tremendous commitment, attitude and spirit towards training, matches & each other throughout the year. Many thanks to the girls, the mentors Decky Drohan, Derek Healy and Joey Carton. Thanks also to Rose Madigan on first aid, parents, family members, friends and supporters for their support throughout the year. This is a great achievement by the girls considering this is our first year entering an adult camogie team since our camogie club’s formation in Sept 2008 and entering U-12 & U-14 teams in C graded championships in 2009. Intermediate Camogie 2016 has a nice ring to it. Many thanks to Ferrybank Camogie Club for a good game and best wishes to them for the future.
