John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Quarter Final
De La Salle 3-18 Butlerstown 1-8
Our junior hurlers qualified for the semi final of the championship when they had a surprisingly comfortable victory over Butlerstown in Roanmore last Saturday in what was a reversal of the result of the first round meeting between the same teams. This was a game in which we led throughout and try as hard as Butlerstown did the they were never able to get close enough to trouble our lads.
We opened well scoring three points in the first three minutes through Mikey Costigan, Conor Dunphy and Mikey Costigan again from a free after the outstanding Eamonn Fitzgerald was fouled. Butlerstown opened their account with a point in the sixth minute but we replied with points from Eamonn Fitzgerald and another Mikey Costigan free after a foul on Darragh Fitzpatrick. Butlerstown pointed in the 13th minute and we led 0-5 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter. A foul on Eoin Casey saw Mikey Costigan convert another free and Eamonn Fitzgerald followed with two from play before Mikey Costigan pointed two further frees after fouls on Ryan Duke and Christopher Sheehan to see us lead 0-10 to 0-2 after twenty five minutes. Butlerstown got a boost a minute later when they goaled but we replied with Mikey Costigan pointing again from a free after Eamonn Fitzgerald was fouled. Luke Lalor added a point in injury time and then Cormac McCann set up Eamonn Fitzgerald for our first goal to see us ahead 1-12 to 1-2 at the interval.
Butlerstown got the first score of the second half in the sixth minute when they pointed but Eamonn Fitzgerald replied a minute later. Fouls on Luke Lalor and Eamonn Fitzgerald saw Mikey Costigan add two more points in the 9th and 15th minutes to make it 1-15 to 1-3. Cormac McCann then pointed and another foul on Luke Lalor saw Mikey Costigan add one more. Eamonn Fitzgerald got in for his second goal when he got on the end of Micheál Kavanagh’s delivery to crash the ball to the net. Gavin Coppinger pointed to make it 2-18 to 1-3 with ten minutes left. Credit to Butlerstown they kept battling and scored four points between the 22nd and 25th minutes. However, a minute later we got our third goal when Micheál Kavanagh ran on to Gavin Coppinger’s delivery and beat the keeper with a ground stroke. Butlerstown ended the scoring with a point in the 28th minute.
We now play Dunhill in the semi final next Saturday afternoon in Kill at 1.30pm.
