    • County U-21 B Football Championship Final

An Gaeltacht 1-15 De La Salle 1-6

Our U-21 footballers put in a battling performance but in the end were well beaten by a superior An Gaeltacht side in Kill last Sunday. Lining out without the injured Adam Farrell, Tom Moran, Dean Walsh and the unavailable Adam Doyle from the team that won the eastern final we struggled throughout the first half and trailed 0-9 to 0-2 at the break. Despite conceding an early second half goal to trail by ten points, helped by the half time introduction of Shane Ryan to full back and the switching of Craig Dowling to midfield we managed to reduce the arrears to five points but An Gaeltacht regained control in the last ten minutes to finish deserving winners.

An Gaeltacht made the early running and scored two points in the first three minutes. Dylan Foley opened our account in the sixth minute but An Gaeltacht added two to their account before our keeper Ciaran Brady was called into action with a fine save in the 11th minute. Eddie Meaney scored our second point in the 14th minute but the rest of the half belonged to our opponents who added five unanswered points to lead 0-9 to 0-2 at the interval. We got a bad start to the second half when after winning a free out in the second minute, we kicked it astray and An Gaeltacht took full advantage to goal. However, within a minute we goaled ourselves when Craig Dowling was brought down and Eddie Meaney expertly converted the penalty. Points from James Coad after another foul on Craig Dowling and Brian Cunningham made it 1-9 to 1-4 after seven minutes. An Gaeltacht pointed in the 10th minute but two minutes later James Coad replied after Craig Dowling was fouled again. A point for An Gaeltacht in the 14th minute was followed by another fine save by Ciaran Brady before An Gaeltacht pointed again in the 23rd minute. A superb long range point from Shane Ryan a minute later proved to be our last score as An Gaeltacht added three late points to secure their victory.

Thanks to our manager Eddie Cooney, selectors Eoin Casey, Paddy Kennedy, Keith Cooney, the players and Johann Carey on first aid for their efforts and congratulations to An Gaeltacht on their win.

Scorers: Eddie Meaney 1-1 (1-0 penalty), James Coad 0-2 (frees), Dylan Foley, Brian Cunningham and Shane Ryan 0-1 each.

Panel: Ciaran Brady, Ryan Duke, Lee Wall, Diarmuid Carey, Craig Dowling, Stephen Dalton (captain), Darragh Fitzpatrick, James Grogan, Gavin Coppinger, Brian Cunningham, Dylan Foley, James Coad, Colin McCarthy, Eddie Meaney, Evan Whelan, Shane Ryan, Ethan Hurley, Micheál Kavanagh, Jamie Roche.

    • County U-16 Division 1 Football Championship Final

Ballinacourty 0-13 De La Salle 1-2

Our U-16 football season came to a disappointing end on Saturday last when we were comphrensively beaten by Ballinacourty in the county final at Walsh Park. While there has to be disappointment with our performance great credit has to be given to our much better opponents who gave an excellent all round team performance with fourteen men for a long period of the game.

We trailed at half time 0-9 to 0-2 having played against the wind, our two points coming from Aidan Gannon. Our opponents continued to dominate after the break with our only score being a late goal from Kevin Hennessy. Congratulations to Ballinacourty on a fine performance.

    • County Senior Hurling Championship

De La Salle 0-15 Ballygunner 0-15

Our senior hurlers sponsored by John Kelly Opel began their campaign with a battling draw against county champions Ballygunner in Walsh Park last Saturday. Having trailed 0-8 to 0-2 after thirteen minutes, we had gone a point ahead early in the second half when we suffered the blow of losing a player. However, driven on by the outstanding Eoin Madigan and Jake Dillon we fought to the end and it took two superb saves by the Ballygunner keeper including a penalty to ensure the game ended honours even

We opened the scoring in the first minute with a Shane Ryan free after Adam Farrell was fouled. Ballygunner replied with two frees before Shane Ryan levelled matters in the fifth minute after Eoin Madigan was fouled. Ballygunner then took control and hit six points in eight minutes. We reduced the arrears with points in the 15th and 18th minutes from Jake Dillon and a Shane Ryan free after a foul on debutant Jack Fagan. A fine save by Stevie Brenner in the 20th minute was followed by four points from Shane Ryan (2) Bryan Phelan and John Mullane to make it 0-8 each after twenty six minute. Ballygunner pointed two frees and Shane Ryan replied with one to see us trail 0-10 to 0-9 at half time.

The second half began with both Jack Fagan and Paidi Nevin pointing to put us ahead. We were then reduced to fourteen men before Shane Ryan pointed a free in the fifth minute. Ballygunner then scored three in a row to regain the lead. A foul on Jack Fagan saw Shane Ryan equalise in the 13th minute. Ballygunner regained the lead a minute later and it was a further ten minutes before we levelled it with another Shane Ryan free after a foul on Eoin Madigan. Ballygunner went in front again in the 26th minute and Shane Ryan replied a minute later from play. A great run from Eddie Meaney in the 29th minute saw him brought down for a penalty but Shane Ryan’s shot was saved. Both sides had chances in additional time to win it but it ended all square.

Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-10 (0-9 frees), Jake Dillon, Bryan Phelan (free), John Mullane, Jack Fagan and Paidi Nevin 0-1 each.

Panel: Stevie Brenner, Stephen Dalton, Ian Flynn (captain), Shane McNulty, Bryan Phelan, Eoin Madigan, Kevin Moran, Eddie Barrett, Paidi Nevin, David Greene, Jake Dillon, Jack Fagan, Adam Farrell, John Mullane, Shane Ryan, Eddie Meaney, John Coady, Brian Cunningham, Lee Wall, Paddy Kennedy, Conan Watt, Kenneth Byrne, Mikey Costigan, Matthew Barden, Jack McCarthy, Gavin Coppinger, Steven Daniels Tom Moran.

De La Salle 5-9 St. Mollerans 1-9

Our intermediate hurlers got the new campaign off to a winning start when they had four goals to spare over St. Mollerans in Walsh Park last Sunday. The first half was even enough as we led by two points at the interval but three second half goals ensured a comfortable victory.

St. Mollerans opened the scoring in the first minute with a point but a minute later we were ahead when Jamie Sage created the opportunity for Conan Watt to goal. Brian Cunningham pointed a free after a foul on Jamie Sage in the fourth minute. Two fouls on Adam O’Sullivan saw Brian convert both frees as St. Mollerans did likewise to make it 1-3 to 0-3 after ten minutes. St. Mollerans pointed again in the 11th minute but three minutes later a great run by Kenneth Byrne set up Matthew Barden to shoot our second goal. Brian Cunningham then added a point from a sixty five after the keeper had made a fine save from Matthew Barden. St. Mollerans pointed twice and then goaled in the 24th minute to leave the minimum between the sides. Brian Cunningham ended the first half scoring from a free to leave us ahead 2-5 to 1-6 at the interval.

We made a great start to the second half with a goal from Matthew Barden in the first minute. St. Mollerans replied with a point immediately. Adam O’Sullivan pointed in the sixth minute and there followed ten scoreless minutes before Matthew Barden pointed. An exchange of points involving Brian Cunningham made it 3-8 to 1-8 with ten minutes to go. The introduction of Robert Daniels after a lengthy injury absence had an immediate effect as he was fouled for a penalty which Brian Cunningham goaled. Jamie Sage pointed in the 24th minute and St. Mollerans replied a minute later. Robert Daniels ended the scoring in injury time with a superb individual goal.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 1-6 (1-0 penalty, 0-4 frees, 0-1 ‘65), Matthew Barden 2-1, Conan Watt and Robert Daniels 1-0 each, Adam O’Sullivan and Jamie Sage 0-1 each.

    • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Championship

Erins Own 1-19 De La Salle 2-6

Our junior hurlers were well beaten by Erins Own in this second round game in Poleberry last Friday. Missing six players from last week mainly through injuries and exams we played second fiddle from the start in what was overall a disappointing display.

Erins Own began strongly and had four points on the board in the first five minutes. Conor O’Toole opened our account but Erins Own replied with two. Gavin Coppinger added our second point to make it 0-6 to 0-2 after sixteen minutes. Erins Own pointed again but we thought we had a lifeline when Eamonn Fitzgerald goaled in the 22nd minute. However, Erins Own then took complete control adding 1-5 before the break to lead 1-12 to 1-2. The third quarter was even enough with both sides adding three points to their totals with ours coming from Barry Twomey and Mikey Costigan (2). Erins Own stretched their lead in the 16th minute but Barry Twomey replied with a goal in the 20th minute. Eamonn Fitzgerald added a point a minute later but Erins Own finished the stronger scoring the last three points.

Scorers: Mikey Costigan 0-4 (0-2 frees), Barry Twomey and Eamonn Fitzgerald 1-0 each, Conor O’Toole and Gavin Coppinger 0-1 each.

Panel: Conor Bohane, Martin Sheehan, Kevin Gahan, Ryan Duke, Alan Fitzgerald, Mikey Costigan, Evan Whelan, Conor O’Toole, Gavin Coppinger, Eoin Casey, Eamonn Fitzgerald (captain), Conor Dunphy, Adam Hayes, Barry Twomey, Ronan O’Connor, Keith Cushen, Kieran O’Donohoe, Jack O’Donohoe, Philip Burke, James Quinlan, Darren Casey, Keith Deasy.

    • County U-16 Football Semi Final

De La Salle 3-10 An Gaeltacht 2-12

Our U-16 Footballers qualified for the county final after a very spirited display against an excellent An Gaeltacht side at a rainswept Gracedieu on Monday last. This was an excellent game of football between two very committed sides and the quality of the fare was enhanced by the very accomplished visitors.

An Gaeltacht opened brightly and lead by 3 points to nil after seven minutes. A goal by Lorcan Dwyer Sheridan levelled matters. They responded with a point which was equalised by Seaghan Walsh, An Gaeltacht dominated the remainder of the half and lead on a score of 1-7 to 1-3 at half time, our scores coming from Kevin Hennessy and Aidan Gannon.

Our visitors continued to set the pace in the second half and extended their lead to seven points before two further points from Hennessy and Gannon reduced the deficit to five. An Gaeltacht goaled to lead on a scoreline 0f 2-9 to 1-5 mid-way through the second half. Both sides exchanged two points each leaving An Gaeltacht leading by seven with eleven minutes remaining. At this juncture it looked like the visitors would prevail but our lads showed tremendous courage and ability to out- score our opponents 2-3 to 0-1 in the last ten minutes. The goals coming from Aidan Gannon and Neil Madigan, to get over the line with the minimum to spare.

This was an excellent advertisement for football at this grade and credit must go to both teams. We await the outcome of the other semi-final. The final is fixed for Saturday 21st at Walsh Park

Panel: Dan Casey, Sam Flynn, Ethan O’Halloran, Niall O’Keefe, Dylan Finn, Dean Casey, Seaghan Walsh, Sean Connolly, Liam Coad, Kevin Hennessy, Neil Madigan, Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan, Aidan Gannon, Eamonn Brosnan, Harry Lawton, Josh Campus, Shane O’Neill, Darren Kenneally, Nathan Finn, Rueben O’Halloran.

    • Junior Hurling

Our junior hurlers under new manager Alan Fitzgerald began this year’s campaign with a hard fought draw in Gracedieu against Mount Sion last Friday. This was an entertaining game and a draw seemed the fairest result, the only downside from our point of view being injuries to Christopher Sheehan and Lee Hayes.

Mount Sion opened the scoring in the first minute but Barry Twomey replied with a goal a minute later when he got on the end of Conor O’Toole’s long range free. Jack Laffan added a point before three Mount Sion points had it all square by the seventh minute. Mikey Costigan then converted a free after Eoin Casey was fouled. Mount Sion replied with two points before Conor O’Toole pointed to level matters again after twelve minutes. We hit the front in the 14th minute when Eamonn Fitzgerald scored a brilliant individual goal and it was 2-3 to 0-6 midway through the half. Mount Sion pointed in the 16th minute and as the scoring rate dropped, Mikey Costigan pointed in the 20th minute after being set up by Jack Laffan, before Mount Sion ended the first half scoring in the 22nd minute to see us lead 2-4 to 0-8 at the interval.

Mount Sion got the first score of the second half in the third minute when they pointed but we took over for a while but missed some chances and two points from Gavin Coppinger and Conor Dunphy were all we had to show as we led 2-6 to 0-9 after twelve minutes. Mount Sion came much more in the game now as they pointed twice in the 16th and 18th minutes. Conor Dunphy put us two ahead in the 19th minute but Mount Sion replied in the 20th, 22nd and 28th minutes to lead 0-14 to 2-7. Back came our lads and Mikey Costigan got the equaliser in the 30th minute. Two minutes into injury time Barry Twomey was fouled and Mikey Costigan made no mistake to put us ahead. Mount Sion responded and as we entered the fourth minute of injury time they equalised to ensure the game ended honours even.

Scorers: Mikey Costigan 0-4 (0-2 frees), Barry Twomey and Eamonn Fitzgerald 1-0 each, Conor Dunphy 0-2, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Jack Laffan, Conor O’Toole and Gavin Coppinger andNiall O’Sullivan 0-1 each.

    • County U-14 Football Peil na nOg B Final

    De La Salle 6-3 Ballyduff/Portlaw 2-3

Our U-14 footballers won the county B feile final at Walsh park on Thursday last overcoming a gallant Ballyduff /Portlaw side. This was a particularly difficult evening to play football due to a strong wind that blew straight down the pitch. We played against the wind in the first twenty minutes and struggled early on against our very good opponents. We were two points down very early on before Daire O’Keefe replied with a point. We then had a period of dominance which yielded two goals from Conor Walsh. Out opponents replied with an excellent point. We turned at half time leading 2-1 to 0-3

We started the second half well and early goals from Reuben O’Halloran, Alex Keane and captain Nathan Finn set us on the road to victory. A further goal from Josh Kelly and points from Daire O’Keefe and Owen Oseni completed our scoring. Our opponents never gave up and finished strongly with two late goals.

The wind was a big factor in this game and a more realistic score was the three points that separated the sides in a league match the previous week. There is great credit due to this group of players and they now have the national feile to look forward to.

Panel. Our senior hurlers minus our county contingent were beaten by Dungarvan in this entertaining senior league game played in Dungarvan last Saturday. With only two weeks to go to the first round of the club championship it obviously would have been beneficial to have those players available but such is the price of enjoying Waterford’s successful run to the league final. It was still a useful run out for the rest of the squad though.
We began well with Shane Ryan pointing two frees in the first two minutes after two fouls on Jack Fagan who was making his debut for the club. Dungarvan opened their account in the third minute and Shane Ryan replied a minute later with another free after Thomas Kearney was fouled. Dungarvan then got in for their first goal but Shane Ryan pointed again after he was fouled himself to leave it all square after seven minutes. Dungarvan pointed twice before good work by Brian Cunningham saw Shane Ryan point again. A Dungarvan point in the 12th minute was followed a minute later by a point from Jack Fagan after he collected Gavin Coppinger’s sideline cut. Two more Dungarvan points had them ahead 1-6 to 0-6 after sixteen minutes. Points from play by Shane Ryan and Paudie Nevin reduced the lead to the minimum before Dungarvan added three in a row to lead by four. A foul on John Mullane saw Shane Ryan reduce the arrears and a point from Adam Farrell saw us trail 1-9 to 0-10 at half time.
The second half began with Adam Farrell setting up John Mullane for a point in the first minute and a minute later it was John setting up Adam for a point to make it all square again. An exchange of points involving a Shane Ryan free made it 0-13 to 1-10 after eight minutes. The game was then won and lost in a ninety second spell when Dungarvan scored 1-2 to take a lead they never relinquished. In fairness to our lads they kept going and Jack Fagan set up John Mullane for a point before Adam Farrell reduced the margin to three in the 18th minute after a foul on Eoin Madigan. A further exchange of points involving Adam Farrell after a foul on Eddie Meaney made it 2-13 to 0-16 with seven minutes left. Two frees stretched Dungarvan’s lead before Adam Farrell got our final point in the 30th minute after a foul on Stephen Daniels. Dungarvan then put the icing on their cake with a third goal two minutes into injury time.
Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-8 (0-6 frees), Adam Farrell 0-5 (0-3 frees), John Mullane 0-2, Jack Fagan and Paudie Nevin 0-1 each.
Panel: Stevie Brenner, Oran Keevers, Ian Flynn, Lee Wall, Thomas Kearney, Eoin Madigan, Stephen Daniels, Conan Watt, Gavin Coppinger, Adam Farrell, John Mullane, Brian Cunningham, Jack Fagan, Paudie Nevin, Shane Ryan, Stephen Dalton, Eddie Meaney, Jack McCarthy, Matthew Barden, Kenneth Byrne, John Coady, Kyle Sinnott.

    • East Intermediate Football League

Kill 4-9 De La Salle 0-8
Our understrength intermediate footballers were well beaten by a very good Kill team in the league last Sunday in Gracedieu. In fairness to our lads the game itself was more competitive than the scoreline would suggest but the concession of three stupid goals in the first half removed any doubt about the final result.
We started poorly and after ten minutes we were 1-3 to 0-0 in arrears. We got ourselves into the game and reduced the gap with three points in five minutes from Colm Morris after a foul on Stephen Dalton, Lee Hayes and newcomer Colin McCarthy only to concede a second goal in the 17th minute. It got worse six minutes later when Kill got in for a third goal and then added a point in the 24th minute. Colm Morris pointed after another foul on Stephen Dalton before Kill ended the first half scoring to lead 3-5 to 0-4 at the break. Kill opened the second half scoring with a point before Colm Morris pointed twice to make it 3-6 to 0-6 after four minutes. Kill then pointed twice before Stephen Dalton pointed in the 15th minute to make it 3-8 to 0-7. Three minutes later Kill got in for a fine goal. James Grogan got our final point in the 19th minute from long range and Kill ended the scoring in the 24th minute with a point.
Scorers: Colm Morris 0-4 (0-2 frees), Lee Hayes, Colin McCarthy, Stephen Dalton and James Grogan 0-1 each.
Panel: David Dennison, Jeff Cahill, Christopher Sheehan, Ryan Duke, Conor O’Toole, Kenneth Byrne, Oran Keevers, Thomas Kearney, James Grogan, Colm Morris, Stephen Dalton, Eoin Casey, Conor Bohane, Lee Hayes, Colin McCarthy, Graham Drennan, Eamonn Dalton, Martin Sheehan.

    • County U-16 Football

Our U-16 footballers have qualified for the County semi-final. They have finished second in the group to Ballinacourty, the overwhelming favourites for the competition. The team picked up full points against An Gaeltacht, Tramore and Gaultier. The only blemish being against Ballinacourty. The last match played was against an ever improving Tramore side at Gracedieu on Monday last.
De La Salle 4-8 Tramore 1-14
This is as the scoreline suggests was a very good game of football played in a sporting manner by two very committed sides. A large part of the credit must go to an ever improving Tramore who played a very attractive brand of football. We started very well with two early goals from Aidan Gannon and Niall O’Keefe. Tramore steadied the ship with some fine points. The sides turning at half time on a scoreline of 2-4 to 0-7.
The second half provided some more entertainment with both sides committed to winning the game. We added another goal by Aidan Gannon but Tramore continued to kick some fine points and added a goal of their own. The game was finally put to bed with a fine goal by the impressive Niall O’Keefe.
We now play An Gaeltacht in the semi-Final in Gracedieu on Sunday May 8th at 11am.
Scorers: Aidan Gannon 2-4, Niall O’Keefe 2-1, Kevin Hennessy 0-2, Sam Flynn 0-1.
Panel: Dan Casey, Ethan O’Halloran, Sean Connolly, Conor Signorelli, Shane O’Neill, Dylan Finn, Dean Casey, Sam Flynn, Kevin Hennessy, Liam Coad, Aidan Gannon, Neil Madigan, Niall O’Keefe, Eamonn Brosnan, Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan, Seaghan Walsh, Colm Maher, Jack Stickle, Josh Campus, Harry Lawton, Darren Kenneally, Lorcan Kerry, Nathan Finn, Rueben O’Halloran.

    • East Junior Football Championship

De La Salle 1-10 Roanmore 2-4

Our junior footballers had a good win over understrength reigning champions Roanmore in our second game played in Gracedieu last Friday. We were the better team for most of the game but found ourselves trailing at half time. The second half was tight but we got the scores that mattered in the final minutes to stay unbeaten.

The game began with Eamonn Dalton making an early fine save and we took advantage of that in the fifth minute when Barry Twomey rose highest to punch Conor Bohane’s delivery to the net. We added points from Eamonn Fitzgerald and Lee Hayes to lead 1-2 to 0-0 after nine minutes. Roanmore opened their account in the 12th minute and then added a second. Two points from Mitchell Casey and Ben Dwyer had us ahead 1-4 to 0-2 after twenty three minutes. The rest of the half belonged to Roanmore. They first added a point before two goals in the 29th and 30th minutes gave them an interval lead of 2-3 to 1-4.

We began the second half with Mitchell Casey pointing a free in the fourth minute after he was fouled and we were level three minutes later when Adam Doyle pointed. There then followed thirteen scoreless minutes before Roanmore regained the lead with a point in the 20th minute. A foul on Kieran O’Donohoe saw Mitchell Casey level matters in the 22nd minute and a minute later Mitchell put is in front with a point from play. Good work by Lee Hayes, Kieran O’Donohoe and Jack O’Donohoe saw Barry Twomey stretch our lead before Eamonn Fitzgerald ended the scoring in the 30th minute to ensure victory.

Scorers: Barry Twomey 1-1, Mitchell Casey 0-4 (0-2 frees), Eamonn Fitzgerald 0-2, Lee Hayes, Ben Dwyer and Adam Doyle 0-1 each.

Panel: Eamonn Dalton, Ryan Duke, Jeff Cahill, Micheál Kavanagh, Peter O’Hagan, Conor O’Toole, Ronan O’Connor, Mitchell Casey, James Grogan, Lee Hayes, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Adam Doyle, Conor Bohane, Barry Twomey, Ben Dwyer, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Kieran O’Donohoe, Jack O’Donohoe.

De La Salle 2-9 Bonmahon 2-9

Our junior footballers began their new campaign with with what turned into an exciting draw in Bonmahon last Friday. This was a typical early season game with missed chances, good scores and great endeavour by both sides. Aided by the wind we led 0-8 to 0-2 at half time but Bonmahon came back in the second half and a draw was probably the fairest result.

We missed an early goal chance before Bonmahon opened the scoring in the fourth minute. However, with James Grogan and Eoin Casey prominent we won lots of possession and two excellent points in the ninth and tenth minutes from Keith Cooney put us ahead.

Two points from Eoin Casey and three from Joey Twomey had us ahead 0-7 to 0-1 after twenty three minutes as Bonmahon missed a good goal chance. Bonmahon pointed in the 28th minute but Joey Twomey converted a free after a foul on Peter O’Hagan two minutes later. Before half time we missed two chances of goals and at the interval we led 0-8 to 0-2.

With wind advantage now, Bonmahon started well and scored two points in the fourth and fifth minutes. Eamonn Fitzgerald pointed for us in the 11th minute but three minutes later Bonmahon were awarded a penalty. Eamonn Dalton managed to stop it but he was unable to do anything about the rebound which was nettted. Bonmahon added a point in the 15th minute and they now trailed by the minimum, 0-9 to 1-5. We looked to have weathered the storm when Eamonn Fitzgerald goaled in the 18th minute but it was all square three minutes later when Bonmahon goaled and then added a point. We were back in front in the 22nd minute when Joey Twomey raced through to finish low to the net with what proved to be our last score. The last five minutes belonged to Bonmahon and they pointed in the 25th and 27th minutes to reduce the margin to the minimum. They then spurned an open goal chance before equalising in the 29th minute to ensure a share of the points.

Scorers: Joey Twomey 1-4 (0-2 frees), Eamonn Fitzgerald 1-1, Keith Cooney and Eoin Casey 0-2 each.

Panel: Eamonn Dalton, Ryan Duke, Jeff Cahill, Micheál Kavanagh, Peter O’Hagan, Conor O’Toole, Martin Sheehan, James Grogan, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Joey Twomey, Keith Cooney, Eoin Casey, Conor Bohane, Barry Twomey, Ronan O’Connor, Ben Dwyer, Lee Hayes.

    • John J. Murphy East U-21 B Football Championship Final

De La Salle 2-8 Roanmore 1-3

Well done to our U-21 footballers who are Eastern B champions after a hard fought win over Roanmore in Carriganore last Friday night. In fairness to Roanmore the scoreline does little justice to their efforts as they were in this game up to injury time and it took two excellent goals in the 62nd and 63rd minutes to finally decide it. Once again, great credit must go to both sets of players for their efforts in an always sporting final given the weather conditions of the day.

There was great delight after the game when board chairman Michael Wadding presented the cup to our excellent captain Stephen Dalton and sponsor John J. Murphy presented the man of the match award to Dean Walsh.

Congratulations to our lads, manager Eddie Cooney, selectors David Greene, Eoin Casey, Paddy Kennedy, Keith Cooney and Johann Carey on first aid. Commiserations also to a gallant Roanmore team.

We opened the scoring in the first minute when Evan Whelan pointed but we failed with five or six more efforts before Roanmore equalised in the 16th minute. It took a superb save from the excellent Ciaran Brady in the 17th minute to stop Roanmore taking the lead but two minutes later they made no mistake when they goaled. A foul on James Coad saw Adam Farrell converting in the 23rd minute as significantly Dean Walsh was introduced. Roanmore pointed in the 29th minute but a minute later Dean Walsh kicked over an excellent point to leave Roanmore ahead 1-2 to 0-3 at the interval.

The second half began with Evan Whelan pointing in the second minute but we had a let off two minutes later when a Roanmore shot came back off the crossbar. It was all square after six minutes when Dylan Foley pointed. Fouls on Dean Walsh in the eight and ninth minutes saw him convert both frees to put us ahead by two. An excellent move involving Ryan Duke, Dylan Foley and Lee Wall resulted in Tom Moran kicking a fine point in the 14th minute which had us ahead 0-8 to 1-2. Roanmore then introduced a few subs and came more into the game resulting in them winning a penalty in the 20th minute which saw one of our players black carded. However, Ciaran Brady got down low to make a fine save. The game was now end to end with both Dean Walsh and Adam Farrell hitting the woodwork before Ciaran Brady was called into action again. Roanmore reduced the deficit to two points from a free in the 29th minute. With the game there for the winnng excellent play by Adam Farrell and James Grogan put Dean Walsh in possession and he raced through to crash the ball to the net two minutes into injury time and a minute later Tom Moran’s cracking shot found the net via the post and the win was secured.

Scorers: Dean Walsh 1-3 (0-2 frees), Tom Moran 1-1, Evan Whelan 0-2, Adam Farrell (free) and Dylan Foley 0-1 each.

Panel: Ciaran Brady, Ryan Duke, Adam Doyle, Diarmuid Carey, Lee Wall, Stephen Dalton, Darragh Fitzpatrick, James Grogan, Tom Moran, Brian Cunningham, Dylan Foley, Adam Farrell, Ethan Hurley, James Coad, Evan Whelan, Dean Walsh, Donal Carey, Ciaran Corrigan.

    • Awards Presentation

Our presentation of the 2015 Eastern U-21 hurling medals and players of the year awards was held in Gracedieu last Saturday evening with an excellent attendance present. With Ricky Grogan acting as MC it was a most enjoyable and efficient presentation. The presentation began with the various player of the year awards. Eddie Barrett won the senior hurler of the year and Thomas Kearney was named senior footballer of the year. Colm Morris was selected as intermediate hurler. The junior awards went to Eamonn Fitzgerald for football and to Conor Bohane for hurling. Craig Dowling was chosen as young footballer. Kieran O’Donohoe won the inaugural award for a minor B hurling team. A presentation was then made to Beth Carton and Brianna O’Regan in recognition of their All Ireland Intermediate camogie success with Waterford. The presentation of the East U-21 hurling medals was then made. That left two final awards to be made. Firstly, Eddie Meaney was selected as the young hurler of the year and the much coveted Liam O’Donnell memorial trophy was presented to Eddie by Liam’s sister Yvonne Kearney. Club chairman Seamus Quirke then announced that this year’s winner of the club person of the year award was the most deserving Tony ‘Doc’ Dalton.

It was then on to Bolgers pub for refreshments where an enjoyable night was had. Our thanks to Ian Flynn and Paul Moran for their sponsorship of this.
