Junior Hurling
Our junior hurlers under new manager Alan Fitzgerald began this year’s campaign with a hard fought draw in Gracedieu against Mount Sion last Friday. This was an entertaining game and a draw seemed the fairest result, the only downside from our point of view being injuries to Christopher Sheehan and Lee Hayes.
Mount Sion opened the scoring in the first minute but Barry Twomey replied with a goal a minute later when he got on the end of Conor O’Toole’s long range free. Jack Laffan added a point before three Mount Sion points had it all square by the seventh minute. Mikey Costigan then converted a free after Eoin Casey was fouled. Mount Sion replied with two points before Conor O’Toole pointed to level matters again after twelve minutes. We hit the front in the 14th minute when Eamonn Fitzgerald scored a brilliant individual goal and it was 2-3 to 0-6 midway through the half. Mount Sion pointed in the 16th minute and as the scoring rate dropped, Mikey Costigan pointed in the 20th minute after being set up by Jack Laffan, before Mount Sion ended the first half scoring in the 22nd minute to see us lead 2-4 to 0-8 at the interval.
Mount Sion got the first score of the second half in the third minute when they pointed but we took over for a while but missed some chances and two points from Gavin Coppinger and Conor Dunphy were all we had to show as we led 2-6 to 0-9 after twelve minutes. Mount Sion came much more in the game now as they pointed twice in the 16th and 18th minutes. Conor Dunphy put us two ahead in the 19th minute but Mount Sion replied in the 20th, 22nd and 28th minutes to lead 0-14 to 2-7. Back came our lads and Mikey Costigan got the equaliser in the 30th minute. Two minutes into injury time Barry Twomey was fouled and Mikey Costigan made no mistake to put us ahead. Mount Sion responded and as we entered the fourth minute of injury time they equalised to ensure the game ended honours even.
Scorers: Mikey Costigan 0-4 (0-2 frees), Barry Twomey and Eamonn Fitzgerald 1-0 each, Conor Dunphy 0-2, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Jack Laffan, Conor O’Toole and Gavin Coppinger andNiall O’Sullivan 0-1 each.
