De La Salle 2-9 Bonmahon 2-9

Our junior footballers began their new campaign with with what turned into an exciting draw in Bonmahon last Friday. This was a typical early season game with missed chances, good scores and great endeavour by both sides. Aided by the wind we led 0-8 to 0-2 at half time but Bonmahon came back in the second half and a draw was probably the fairest result.

We missed an early goal chance before Bonmahon opened the scoring in the fourth minute. However, with James Grogan and Eoin Casey prominent we won lots of possession and two excellent points in the ninth and tenth minutes from Keith Cooney put us ahead.

Two points from Eoin Casey and three from Joey Twomey had us ahead 0-7 to 0-1 after twenty three minutes as Bonmahon missed a good goal chance. Bonmahon pointed in the 28th minute but Joey Twomey converted a free after a foul on Peter O’Hagan two minutes later. Before half time we missed two chances of goals and at the interval we led 0-8 to 0-2.

With wind advantage now, Bonmahon started well and scored two points in the fourth and fifth minutes. Eamonn Fitzgerald pointed for us in the 11th minute but three minutes later Bonmahon were awarded a penalty. Eamonn Dalton managed to stop it but he was unable to do anything about the rebound which was nettted. Bonmahon added a point in the 15th minute and they now trailed by the minimum, 0-9 to 1-5. We looked to have weathered the storm when Eamonn Fitzgerald goaled in the 18th minute but it was all square three minutes later when Bonmahon goaled and then added a point. We were back in front in the 22nd minute when Joey Twomey raced through to finish low to the net with what proved to be our last score. The last five minutes belonged to Bonmahon and they pointed in the 25th and 27th minutes to reduce the margin to the minimum. They then spurned an open goal chance before equalising in the 29th minute to ensure a share of the points.

Scorers: Joey Twomey 1-4 (0-2 frees), Eamonn Fitzgerald 1-1, Keith Cooney and Eoin Casey 0-2 each.

Panel: Eamonn Dalton, Ryan Duke, Jeff Cahill, Micheál Kavanagh, Peter O’Hagan, Conor O’Toole, Martin Sheehan, James Grogan, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Joey Twomey, Keith Cooney, Eoin Casey, Conor Bohane, Barry Twomey, Ronan O’Connor, Ben Dwyer, Lee Hayes.
