Passage 1-18 De La Salle 1-14

A dreadful performance in the first twenty five minutes by our senior hurlers saw us go down to Passage in Walsh Park last Friday. Trailing 0-12 to 0-3 at this point we rallied to make it 0-14 to 0-8 at the interval. We reduced the deficit to four points eight minutes into the second half but poor shooting and the concession of a goal in the thirteenth minute saw Passage emerge worthy winners. On a night when the long period of inactivity seemed to have affected us, one of the few positives was the senior debut of minor player Mikey Costigan and he acquitted himself well.

Passage made a great start and pointed four times in the first six minutes. Jack Fagan opened our account in the seventh minute but Passage replied with three in a row. John Mullane scored our second in the 13th minute but Passage again hit three in a row to lead 0-10 to 0-2 after seventeen minutes. Brian Cunningham pointed a free after a foul on Eddie Meaney in the 18th minute but Passage added a further two points to lead by nine. A double exchange of points involving Brian Cunningham and Bryan Phelan frees saw the nine point gap remain after thirty minutes. Points from Jack Fagan, Eddie Meaney and Shane Ryan in injury time made it 0-14 to 0-8 at half time. We dominated the first ten minutes of the second half but poor shooting saw us only add two points through a Bryan Phelan sixty five and Eddie Meaney. Passage pointed and then followed with a goal in the 12th minute. Two points from Shane Ryan, one after a foul on John Mullane, made the score 1-15 to 0-12 midway through the half. Passage added two more points in the 19th and 20th minutes. Bryan Phelan converted a sixty five in the 24th minute and a foul on Shane Ryan in the 30th minute saw Eoin Madigan convert the penalty to reduce the margin to four points. Passage added a point in injury time and Bryan Phelan ended the scoring from another sixty five.

Scorers: Bryan Phelan 0-4 (0-3 ’65s, 0-1 free), Shane Ryan 0-3 (0-1 free), Eoin Madigan 1-0 (penalty), Jack Fagan, Brian Cunningham (frees) and Eddie Meaney 0-2 each, John Mullane 0-1.

Panel: John Coady, Tom Moran, Shane McNulty, Paddy Kennedy, Bryan Phelan, Eoin Madigan, Kevin Moran, Eddie Barrett, Jake Dillon, Adam Farrell, Conan Watt, Jack Fagan, Brian Cunningham, John Mullane, Eddie Meaney, Shane Ryan, Mikey Costigan, Ian Flynn, David Greene, Stephen Dalton, Steven Daniels, Stevie Brenner, Thomas Kearney, Stephen Jacob, Lee Wall, Colm Morris, , Kenneth Byrne, Robert Daniels, Matthew Barden, Gavin Coppinger, Kyle Sinnott, Oran Keevers.

De La Salle 2-16 Clonea 2-12

Our minor hurlers maintained their unbeaten run with a hard fought victory over Clonea in Clonea last Monday in a well contested and highly entertaining game. The sides were level with time almost up when Cormac McCann struck for the winning goal. An injury time point made the game safe.

Clonea opened the scoring after two minutes but we replied with three frees from Mikey Costigan. Conor Giles-Doran got our first point from play in the seventh minute. Clonea pointed in the ninth minute and Mikey Costigan got his first from play in the 12th minute. An exchange of frees involving Mikey Costigan was followed by two Clonea points to see us ahead 0-6 to 0-5 after eighteen minutes. Points from Mikey Costigan and Cormac McCann stretched our lead but Clonea replied with one in the 20th minute. A foul on Cormac McCann saw Mikey Costigan convert the free in the 22nd minute. Back came Clonea with two points before Luke Flynn got the last point of the half in the 29th minute and we led 0-10 to 0-8 at the interval. Clonea opened the second half scoring but Sean Power replied immediately. Mikey costigan pointed a free in the eight minute after Chris Kong was fouled. Clonea added points in the 10th and 13th minutes. Mikey Costigan pointed again to make it 0-13 to 0-11 midway through the half. It took a brilliant save by Donal Carey minute later to keep us in the lead before Clonea narrowed the gap to the minimum in the 18th minute. We goaled a minute later when good work by Ryan Duke, Sean Carton and Luke Flynn set up Mikey Costigan and he crashed the ball to the net. Mikey added a point in the 20th minute to make it 1-14 to 0-12. However, Clonea were back in the game with a goal a minute later. Conor Giles-Doran hit over a fine point in the 24th minute to make it a three point game. Clonea were level in the 26th minute when after another brilliant piece of goalkeeping by Donal Carey our defence failed to react properly and the ball was finished to the net. Clonea were unable to convert a chance from a sixty five to go ahead and in the 30th minute Adam Hayes found Cormac McCann who finished low to the net. Two minutes into injury time James Stone added the insurance point.

Scorers: Mikey Costigan 1-10 (0-6 frees), Cormac McCann 1-1, Conor Giles-Doran 0-2, Luke Flynn, Sean Power and James Stone 0-1 each.

Division One is named after Tony Forristal, the late Mount Sion man, while Division Two is named in memory of the great De La Salle and Waterford stalwart Sonny Walsh.

Sonny represented Waterford at all ages for close on 20 years, winning a National League medal and All Ireland Runners Up medals in 1963. He served as Chairman, secretary and treasurer of his beloved club while still playing. Sonny was a founder member of the original Tony Forristal tournament. De La Salle 3-17 Mount Sion 4-12

Our minor hurlers maintained their unbeaten run with a narrow victory over Mount Sion in Gracedieu last Tuesday in a hard fought high scoring encounter. Having led by seven points midway through the second half we were brought back to equality in injury time before two late points saw us snatch victory.

The game had an explosive start with Mount Sion pointing and then goaling inside the first minute. We opened our account with points from Mikey Costigan and James Stone. We took the lead in the fifth minute when Mikey Costigan goaled after good work by Chris Kong. Within a minute Mount Sion were back in front with a second goal. Three frees from Mikey Costigan and one from play from Cormac McCann had us ahead 1-6 to 2-1 after twelve minutes. A minute later we got out second goal when Sean Power scored after Cormac McCann set him up. Mount Sion hit back with two points to make it 2-6 to 2-3 midway through the half. The next eleven minutes saw both sides add three points with ours coming from Sean Power, Cormac McCann and Mikey Costigan. Cormac McCann then struck for our third goal in 27th minute with an individual effort and Sean Power added another point. Mount Sion replied with two points which left us ahead 3-10 to 2-8 at the interval.

The second half scoring slowed down with points from Sean Carton in the eight minute and Mikey Costigan in the 13th minute being the only scores of the first twenty one minutes. Mount Sion then converted two frees and a sixty five between the 22nd and 25th minutes. We replied with two points from Mikey Costigan in the 27th and 28th minutes to make it 3-14 to 2-11. Back came Mount Sion to goal from a free in the 30th minute. Mikey Costigan pointed a free in the 31st minute after Conor Giles-Doran was fouled but Mount Sion replied a minute later. It looked like we would have to settle for a draw when Mount Sion goaled again in the 33rd minute but from the resultant puck out we won a sixty five which Mikey Costigan converted. Mikey followed that up with another point in the 35th minute to secure the win.

Scorers: Mikey Costigan 1-11 (0-6 frees, 0-1 ’65), Cormac McCann and Sean Power 1-2 each, James Stone and Sean Carton 0-1 each.

De La Salle 3-17 Abbeyside 0-10

Our minor hurling team got their campaign off to a winning start with a good display in Abbeyside last Wednesday. After a close first half we took control in the second half and ran out comfortable winners. Abbeyside were missing a couple of defenders and struggled to get the grips with our full forward line of Luke Flynn, Cormac McCann and Thomas Douglas who scored 2-9 from play between them in a game in which the Abbeyside keeper won the admiration of the attendance with three superb saves.

Abbeyside took the lead in the first minute but Thomas Douglas equalised a minute later. Abbeyside pointed again in the sixth minute but we were ahead within the minute when Lee Wall and Gavin Coppinger set up Thomas Douglas who crashed the ball to the net. Abbeyside then replied with two points to level matters. Points from Cormac McCann, the excellent Luke Flynn,

Mikey Costigan and Thomas Douglas (2) between the 10th and 26th minutes had us ahead 1-6 to 0-4 before two late points for Abbeyside reduced our lead to three points at the interval.

We began the second half with Sean Power pointing within ten seconds. Further points from Mikey Costigan, Thomas Douglas, James Stone and Luke Flynn had us ahead 1-11 to 0-6 by the fifth minute. Abbeyside replied with two frees before Luke Flynn pointed after good work by Ian Condon. Abbeyside pointed again but we added points from Luke Flynn, James Stone (2) and Thomas Douglas to lead 1-16 to 0-9 after nineteen minutes. The last few minutes saw us embellish the score when first Luke Flynn goaled after he was set up by Cormac McCann. Cormac followed with a point and then after another run he set up Adam Hayes for our third goal. Abbeyside ended the scoring with an injury time sixty five.

De La Salle 2-5 Portlaw 0-11

A goal in injury time by Dylan Foley rescued a somewhat fortunate draw for our intermediate footballers and ensured qualification for the knock out stages after another hard fought game with Portlaw in Dunhill last Friday. It was an unusual game in that Portlaw dominated the first quarter of both halves with our lads getting on top in the latter periods and we were relieved to finish honours even in the end.

Portlaw started brightly and David Dennison had to make an early save before they opened up a three point lead by the sixteenth minute. Ian Cantwell got our first point in the 19th minute. We were in front five minutes later when Paddy Kennedy picked out Dylan Foley with a crossfield ball and Dylan shrugged off two opponents to crash the ball to the net. Portlaw equalised from a free in the 27th minute but just before half time we regained the lead when Paddy Kennedy converted a free after David Kennedy was fouled to make it 1-2 to 0-4 at the break. Portlaw took over again and six consecutive points saw them lead 0-10 to 1-2 midway through the half. Three points from Colm Morris, Donal Barron and Ian Cantwell between the 16th and 24th minutes reduced the margin to two points. Portlaw pointed a free in the 29th minute and a minute later we were narrowly out of luck with a goal chance. From the restart a move involving Oran Keevers, Stephen Walsh and Stephen Dalton put Dylan Foley through on goal and for the second time he made no mistake finishing to the roof of the net.

Scorers: Dylan Foley 2-0, Ian Cantwell 0-2, Paddy Kennedy (free), Colm Morris and Donal Barron 0-1 each.

Panel: David Dennison, Christopher Sheehan, Colm Clancy (captain), Ryan Duke, Oran Keevers, Kenneth Byrne, Stephen Dalton, Stephen Walsh, James Grogan, Donal Barron, Ian Cantwell, Dylan Foley, David Kennedy, Colm Morris, Paddy Kennedy, Thomas Kearney, Mitchell Casey, Conan Watt, Eamonn Dalton.

    • Sargent Cup Senior Hurling League

De La Salle 0-21 Roanmore 1-11

Our senior hurlers put in an excellent second half display to come from behind to beat Roanmore in this senior league game played in Gracedieu last Tuesday. The highlight of the game from our point of view was the performance of John Mullane who rolled back the years to score six fine points from play and also win four frees which were converted by minor debutant Mikey Costigan.

Roanmore began well and scored six unanswered points in the first seven minutes. Mikey Costigan opened our account with a pointed free in the 12th minute after the excellent Eoin Madigan was fouled. Roanmore replied from a free before two fouls on John Mullane yielded two points from Mikey Costigan. Roanmore came back with two points to lead 0-9 to 0-3 after twenty minutes.
