- County U-16 Division 1 Football Final
Ballinacourty 2-11 De La Salle 2-5
Hard luck to our U-16 footballers who despite putting in a tremendous battling performance had to give best to the favourites Ballinacourty in last Saturday’s county final in Fraher Field. This was a very good game but the unavailability of midfielder Luke Flynn, injured playing with the Waterford U-16 hurling development squad, and Ballinacourty greater ability to kick points saw them emerge deserving winners though the result was in doubt up until their second goal in the 56th minute.
We got a great start when Peter Grogan found Sean Power in the second minute in front of goal and as Sean attempted to round the goalkeeper he was tripped by his outstretched leg and we were awarded a penalty. The goalkeeper saved Eoghan Rea’s resultant penalty but Eoghan kept his cool to slot home the rebound. Ballinacourty opened their account with a point but Chris Kong replied from a free in the 11th minute. Ballinacourty added two points before Eoghan Rea pointed in the 18th minute to make it 1-2 to 0-3. Ballinacourty finished the half stronger and scored five unanswered points between the 21st and 32nd minutes to lead 0-8 to 1-2 at the break.
The second half came to life in the seventh minute when Peter Grogan and Eoghan Rea combined for Seán Power to finish low to the net and it was all square again. This goal meant that Seán scored a goal in every single championship game this year which is a fine achievement. We took the lead in the ninth minute when Seán Power pointed but within a minute Ballinacourty were back in front when after Donal Carey had done well to save the first shot a forward re-acted quickest to finish the rebound to the net. By the 20th minute both teams had added two more points with ours coming from Chris Kong and Lorcan Dwyer Sheridan to leave us trailing 1-9 to 2-5. Ballinacourty added two points in the 21st and 25th minutes and they wrapped the game up a minute later when having missed the first goal chance the ball was returned to the square and finished to the net. We were unable to to add to our tally in the last few minutes plus the four additional minutes.
We congratulate Ballinacourty on their victory and we commend our own lads for the effort and commitment they have displayed this year.
Thanks to team mentors Ricky Grogan, Paudie Brosnan, Gerry Ward for their efforts and to Johnny Walsh and Willie Power who assisted them. Thanks also to Johann Carey who looked after first aid and to the parents who washed jerseys and provided transport to games. All much appreciated.

- East U-14 Division 2 Football Final
De La Salle 5-8 Portlaw 0-2
Our U-14 footballers won the Division 2 Eastern title with what was an overall very good display. An early goal and point from the outstanding Neil Madigan set us on the road. A point in reply from a determined Portlaw side narrowed the gap before a second goal from Harry Lawton followed by a third from Jack Stickle saw us lead 3-5 to 0-1 at half time. The second half saw Portlaw, who never stopped trying, add a second point but a couple of points by Neil Madigan and one from Darren Kenneally as well as goals from Reuben O’Halloran and another from Neil Madigan saw us secure the title. After the game the cup was presented to team captain Eamonn Brosnan by the Eastern Bord na nÓg chairman Jim Murphy. Well done to our lads who were winning their first ever trophy and commiserations to Portlaw.

- Sargent Cup Senior Hurling League
De La Salle 5-17 Tallow 1-16
Our understrength senior hurlers sponsored by John Kelly Opel had their first win in the Sargent Cup when we defeated Tallow in a high scoring game in Gracedieu last Sunday morning. Fielding only five players who had seen senior championship action this year we gave competitive debuts to Stephen Jacob and Lee Wall and four first half goals ensured we were always comfortable against a Tallow who were also missing a few players.
The early exchanges saw us lead 0-2 to 0-1 before David Greene caught Stevie Brenner’s puck out and set up Jack Kennedy for a goal in the sixth minute. We got our second goal in the 15th minute when David Greene scored after good work by Kenneth Byrne, Stephen Jacob and Brian Cunningham. A Tallow goal in the 17th minute made it 2-6 to 1-3. In the 24th minute Tom Moran, Martin Sheehan and Jack Kennedy combined for Michael Roche to goal and it was 3-8 to 1-4. Our fourth goal came on the stroke of half time when Ian Flynn long delivery deceived the goalkeeper and we led 4-11 to 1-5 at the break.
Tallow, with the breeze, came more into it in the second half and by the midway point it was 4-14 to 1-10. They then added three further points by the 22nd minute. Three points from Brian Cunningham kept us ten points clear entering injury time and the last word went to Stephen Jacob who goaled after good play by Conan Watt, Kenneth Byrne and the excellent David Greene.
Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-10 (0-7 frees), Michael Roche 1-2, Stephen Jacob 1-1, Jack Kennedy, David Greene and Ian Flynn 1-0 each, Bryan Phelan 0-2 (frees), Thomas Kearney and Kenneth Byrne 0-1 each.

- East Junior B Hurling Championship
De La Salle 4-12 Ferrybank 1-10
Our junior hurlers, operating this year in the B grade had their first championship victory in three years when they overcame a battling Ferrybank side in Ferrybank last Friday. Fielding a mixture of youth and experience we made strong starts to both halves and were worthy winners in the end.
We suffered a blow when with the game still in the first minute Luke Lalor picked up a leg injury which forced his retirement but two early points from the outstanding Stephen Jacob put us on the way. Ferrybank opened their account before good work by Conor Dunphy Dalton and Willie Power (who had replaced Luke Lalor) set up Niall O’Sullivan for a sixth minute goal. Ferrybank replied with two points before Stephen Jacob created another goal chance which Willie Power struck low to the net. Ferrybank pointed again before further points from Stephen Jacob and Niall O’Sullivan made it 2-4 to 0-4 midway through the half. Ferrybank added another point but we dominated the rest of the half and points from Niall O’Sullivan, a fine individual effort from James Stone and Ray Murphy (3) had us ahead 2-9 to 0-5 at the interval.
The second half began with Stephen Jacob and Christopher Sheehan setting up Eamonn Fitzgerald for a fine goal within the first thirty seconds. Ferrybank replied with a point before the lively Ray Murphy worked the opening for Eamonn Fitzgerald to goal again in the fourth minute. Ray added a point and it was 4-10 to 0-6 after six minutes. Ferrybank then pointed three in a row by the 17th minute as we missed some chances. Stephen Jacob pointed twice either side of a Ferrybank point and the scoring ended with an injury time goal for Ferrybank.

De La Salle 1-3 Ballygunner 1-3
This third round match was played in Ballygunner on Friday night. It was a hard fought match between two evenly matched teams. We played against a strong breeze in the first half and were one point down at half time. 1-2 to 1-1. In the second half we added two points to lead by one but Ballygunner were awarded a late free which they converted to level the match. A good hardworking performance on the night.

- Condolences
The deaths have occurred recently of former club players Denny Corcoran, Billy Irish and Larry Phelan. Denny enjoyed success with the club winning a county minor football medal in 1953, a county junior hurling medal in 1954 and a county junior football medal in 1956. He was the goalkeeper on our county senior football title winning team of 1958. Later when he settled in Ballybeg he threw in his lot with St. Saviours club.
Billy was a hurling goalkeeper and played in goal on our teams that won county minor hurling honours in 1961 and the county intermediate title in 1965.
Larry was also a member of the team that won the county minor title in 1961. We extend our sympathy to the Corcoran, Irish and Phelan families. Ar dheis Dé go raibh siad.
