De La Salle 2-12 Tallow 1-15

Our senior hurlers sponsored by John Kelly Opel had to settle for a share of the spoils when an injury time goal gave Tallow a deserved draw in our first round senior hurling championship clash in Fraher Field last Friday. This was a game in which after a reasonable first half performance against the strong wind we went completely out of the game in the second half and were fortunate that our opponents hit several wides when on top. Certainly we will have to improve vastly for next weekend’s game and we can but hope that having our county players back for an additional week will benefit the team. Well done to Tom Moran who made his senior championship debut on the night and acquitted himself well.

Points from Adam Farrell and Stephen Daniels cancelled out two early Tallow points before Tallow went one up in the seventh minute. We responded immediately with Tom Moran, Kevin Moran and Oran Keevers combining for Eddie Barrett to goal. A further point from Adam Farrell and an excellent goal from Jamie Sage saw us lead 2-3 to 0-3 after sixteen minutes. Tallow then hit three points in a row before Adam Farrell replied with two. Tallow hit two more points either side of a Bryan Phelan free to see us ahead 2-6 to 0-8 at half time. We began the second half well and a Bryan Phelan free was followed by two points from Eddie Barrett to stretch our lead to to 2-9 to 0-8 after six minutes.

Tallow then took control and Kevin Moran’s point in the 12th minute was our only response as Tallow reduced our lead to 2-10 to 0-13 with ten minutes left. A point from Bryan Phelan stretched our lead in the 21st minute but Tallow responded with two points to reduce the margin to two. Bryan Phelan again made it three with a point in the 25th minute and there was no further scoring until the Tallow goal two minutes into injury time.

Scorers: Eddie Barrett 1-2, Adam Farrell (0-2 frees) and Bryan Phelan (frees) 0-4 each, Jamie Sage 1-0, Stephen Daniels and Kevin Moran 0-1 each.
