Ballinacourty 0-12 De La Salle 1-6

Our senior footballers were beaten by an understrength Ballinacourty side in the Phelan Cup in Gracedieu last Saturday. This was a close game for the most part and our lads put in a huge effort but too many missed point scoring chances both from play and frees helped to ensure the visitors took the spoils.

We opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a point from a Mitchell Casey free after he was fouled himself but Ballinacourty took over then and by the 13th minute they led 0-3 to 0-1. Points from Lee Hayes and Patrick Fitzgerald in the 16th and 20th minutes levelled matters only for Ballinacourty to regain the lead immediately. On the stroke of half time Mitchell Casey pointed to make it 0-4 each at the break.

Much like the first half we opened the second half scoring with a Colm Morris point only for Ballinacourty to reply with three of their own to lead 0-7 to 0-5 by the tenth minute. Lee Hayes reduced the arrears in the 13th minute but two more points made it 0-9 to 0-6 for Ballinacourty by the 18th minute. We got back on level terms when David Greene, Lee Hayes and Mitchell Casey combined for Patrick Flynn to finish to the Balliancourty net in the 20th minute. However, this was was to prove to be our last score and Ballinacourty added points in the 23rd, 27th and 30th minutes to finish on top.

Scorers: Patrick Flynn 1-0, Mitchell Casey (0-1 free) and Lee Hayes 0-2 each, Patrick Fitzgerald and Colm Morris 0-1 each.

Panel: David Dennison, Martin Sheehan, Thomas Kearney, Christopher Sheehan, Stephen Dalton, Colm Clancy (captain), David Kennedy, Stephen Walsh, David Greene, Lee Hayes, Patrick Fitzgerald, James Coad, Ian Cantwell, Patrick Flynn, Mitchell Casey, Colm Morris, Paddy Kennedy, Craig Dowling, James Grogan, Micheál Kavanagh.

De La Salle 4-2 Clashmore 0-13

Our U-16 footballers made it two wins from two when a magnificent goal from Kevin Hennessy three minutes from the end of normal time gave us a somewhat fortunate victory over Clashmore at the end of a most entertaining game in Gracedieu last Sunday morning. Having kicked thirteen scores, twelve of them from play, Clashmore will feel unlucky not to have come away with a share of the spoils but great credit to our lads for their determination and effort on the day.

We got a great start when Kevin Hennessy got on the end of a crossfield pass from Eoin Treacy to finish low to the net in the sixth minute. Clashmore came back and with the aid of whatever breeze was there kicked five points in a row between the seventh and twentieth minutes. Kevin Hennessy pointed a free in the 21st minute after Seán Power was fouled and a minute later we were back in front when Chris Kong worked the opening for Seán Power to score a fine goal. Four point between the 25th and 29th minutes put Clashmore back in front before Kevin Hennessy, Lorcan Dwyer Sheridan and Eoin Treacy set up Seán Power for his second goal to leave us ahead 3-1 to 0-9 at the break.

The second half began with Clashmore equalising inside the first minute. They took the lead in the eight minute but it was all square three minutes later when Chris Kong pointed after Seán Power was fouled.
Clashmore regained the lead in the 13th minute and there followed ten scoreless minutes before Clashmore stretched the lead to two from a free. A few substitutions breathed new life into our attack and in the 27th minute Luke Flynn dispossessed a defender and found Kevin Hennessy unmarked who unleashed a powerful shot into the far corner of the net for what proved to be the decisive score. Clashmore tried hard for the equaliser but were met with dogged resistance from our goalkeeper and defenders. They had one last chance from a free from an acute angle but it carried wide

Thanks to Margaret Treacy for washing the jerseys this week. Who is next?

    • Munster U-21 Football Championship

Commiserations to Stephen Dalton and to selector John Cummins on Waterford U-21 footballer’s disappointing defeat to Clare last Wednesday. On a brighter note reports received suggest that Stephen was one of the players to impress on the night.
