- Phelan Cup Senior Football League
Nire 1-10 De La Salle 1-5
Our senior footballers were beaten by county champions Nire in the opening Phelan Cup game in Gracedieu last Saturday. Both teams were missing players for this game with our opponents being the worst hit. Our lads competed well for most of the game but too many missed point scoring chances in the first half plus the failure to convert two goal chances in the second prevented any chance of a surprise result.
We began well with points from Mitchell Casey (free) and Stephen Walsh in the second and sixth minutes.
Nire opened their account from a free in the eight minute and though we dominated possession we failed to score again until Ian Cantwell pointed in the 20th minute. Mitchell Casey stretched our lead with a point in the 24th minute after good play by Patrick Flynn and Ian Cantwell. Nire replied immediately a minute later with a point and followed with a free in the 29th minute to leave us ahead 0-4 to 0-3 at half time.
Nire resumed strongly and scored three points in the first four minutes. We were back in front in the sixth minute when a move began by Christopher Sheehan and carried on by Oran Keevers and Ian Cantwell saw Stephen Walsh crash the ball to the roof of the net. Good play by David Kennedy and Donal Barron made the opening for James Coad to point and make it 1-5 to 0-6 in the ninth minute with what was to prove to be our last score. Nire were back in front a minute later when our attack broke down and a long ball caused a defensive mix up which resulted in a forward having the simple task of palming the ball over the line. Nire stretched the gap to two points in the 13th minute and we were out of luck in the 15th minute when after a good run James Coad’s shot beat the goalkeeper but went just outside the post. Nire took control for the last quarter and added three points to their tally between the 17th, and 22nd minutes to end the scoring but we were out of luck again a minute from time when Mitchell Casey set up a chance for Stephen Walsh who beat the advancing goalkeeper only to see his shot come back off the butt of the upright.
Scorers: Stephen Walsh 1-1, Mitchell Casey 0-2 (0-1 free), Ian Cantwell and James Coad 0-1 each.
Panel: David Dennison, Martin Sheehan, Colm Clancy, Christopher Sheehan, Oran Keevers, Thomas Kearney, David Kennedy, Stephen Walsh, David Greene, Ian Cantwell, Mitchell Casey, Patrick Fitzgerald, James Coad, Patrick Flynn, Donal Barron, Eamonn Dalton, Micheál Kavanagh, Keith Deasy.
- Hurling Challenge
Waterford U-21s 4-20 De La Salle 2-23
We had our first hurling challenge game last Wednesday when we played a county U-21 selection in what was an entertaining high scoring game. Fielding only seven senior hurlers we used the match to give a run to some of our younger players which proved worthwhile. A positive note for us was to see Eddie Barrett play for over fifty minutes on the night and to notch some fine scores.
- County Minor Football Championship
We headed with a very young minor team to Abbeyside to take on the home team Ballinacourty in our second round football championship match on Sunday last. The game was played on a lovely morning on our hosts new and very impressive pitch. The team put in a very hard working display over the hour but unfortunately our opposition were just way too strong on the day and played some very impressive football with each of their players very comfortable on the ball. Their manager made the effort to compliment the team on their efforts and positive attitude throughout which is always nice to hear, so well done to the lads for making such an impression when representing the club. Unfortunately our case wasn’t helped with the loss of James Stone who had to depart early after taking an accidental knock on the head and for safety reasons remained on the sideline. Johann Carey managing our first aid was on hand to help James and ensure he remained warm with a very impressive rug. Thank you Johann, Sheila, Ann and Richard for making the effort and driving our players to the game, your help is much appreciated. Our next game is at home to Tramore on Sunday 22nd March.
