    • Senior Championship 2015 and beyond

The County C.C.C. met on Monday night 29th December to consider the Fixtures Plan and Senior Hurling & Football Championship and League structures for 2015.
Having considered the 2015 Championship Structures the CCCC will be making the following recommendations in relation to the Senior Hurling & Football Championships:
    1. The number of teams participating in the Senior Hurling & Football Championships should be reduced to 10 for the 2016 season.
    2. In order to achieve this, two (2) teams would be relegated from the Senior Championship at the end of the 2015 season.
    3. The 2015 Championship would be run as two groups of six (6) teams in the same format as the 2014 season.
    4. The bottom team in each group, (after all the league section games had been played) would be automatically relegated to the Intermediate grade for the 2016 season.
    5. The two fifth (5th) placed teams would play off. The winner would retain their Senior Status. The loser would play the County Intermediate Champions with the winner of that game playing in the Senior Grade in 2016.
    6. From 2016 on there would be ten (10) teams in the senior grade. The Championship would be played in two (2) groups of five (5) teams.
    – The top team in each group would qualify for the County Semi Final

    – The second & third placed teams in each Group would play in the County Quarter Finals

    – The two fifth (5th) placed teams would play one another in a relegation final with the loser relegated to the Intermediate grade for the following season.
The logic for reducing the number of teams to ten (10) is to make the Championship more competitive and avoid the situation that currently exists whereby the quarter finalists are more or less known after three of the league section games are played and in most cases the remaining two league section games are by and large meaningless.

Two groups of five (5) with only three qualifying for the knockout stages and the bottom two (2) playing off for relegation would make for a far more competitive Championship.
If clubs want submit alternative plans for the Championship they should do so not later than Friday 16th January and I will then circulate same to all clubs on 17th January.
The County Board meeting to decide on the format of the Championships (and Leagues) will take place on Monday 26th January at 7.30pm in Lawlor’s Hotel.

    • Annual General Meeting

The AGM took place last Friday in Gracedieu and it was no change at the top table as all the main officers were re-elected unopposed. The night also saw the launch of our new club development plan and county development officer Patricia Walsh was in attendance.
After the highs of winning three county titles last year no adult trophies came to the club this year though we did succeed in maintaining senior football status in our first year.
At under age it was another decent year in which we won the county U-16 hurling title after a cracking match with St. Carthages. We also won eastern titles in U-16, U-15 and U-14 hurling as well as eastern titles in U-14 and U-12 football. Our U-14 footballers were also successful in Peil na nOg having travelled to Leitrim as county runners-up they came home as Division 8 All-Ireland champions.
In his address as chairman Owen Dunphy spoke about the about the launch of the development plan and the continuing need to remain financially viable. He requested everyone to continue to support any fundraisers held as well as the Deise Draw, Lotto, the Gracedieu scheme and to pay their membership to ensure we can pay our way.
He paid tribute to the management of the senior hurling, senior football and intermediate hurling teams who have all stepped down and he complimented all the players who had represented Waterford at various levels. He thanked our club players and mentors for their efforts this year. He paid special tribute to our outgoing insurance officer James ‘Danno’ O’Shea who stepped down from the post and who had done a wonderful job for several years. He then thanked his fellow officers for their work and assistance during the year and wished everyone well for 2015.
The following officers were elected, President Br. Killian, Chairman: Owen Dunphy, Vice-Chairman Alan Duke, Secretary: Olivia Russell, Treasurer: Tom O’Leary, P.R.O: John Sheehan, Games Administration Committee Chairman: Owen Dunphy, Field Committee: Billy O’Neill, Players Representative: Thomas Kearney, County Board Delegate: Seamus Quirke, East Board Delegate Billy O‘Neill, Juvenile Chairman: Paudie Brosnan, Childrens Welfare Officer: Brendan Lawton, Irish Officer: Mick Kavanagh. The position of Insurance Officer is to be filled by the executive committee.

    • U-13 Allianz Co. Football Final

    St. Declan’s 1-4 Ballymacarbry 1-6

Our long awaited Allianz County Final was played at Walsh Park on Tuesday December 2nd. It was a perfect day for football and the pitch was in excellent condition. We were under pressure right from the off and goalkeeper Conor Cummins was in action early on bringing off a few fine saves. Conor O’Shea eventually opened the scoring in the eight minute with a well taken point from a free. Ballymacarbry followed up quickly with a point from play. A point from Kieran Kennedy and another free from Conor O’Shea put us two up by the fifteenth minute. A Ballymacarbry goal and a point just before the interval left us trailing by two, St. Declan’s 0-3 Ballymacarbry 1-2

We opened strongly at the start of the second half with Owen Oseni scoring a fine individual goal. Ballymacarbry evened up the game on five minutes with a point from play. There then followed a period of stalemate for about ten minutes. The western boys eventually added a point but this was quickly cancelled out by Kieran Kennedy’s second point. Once again the teams were level. However with time running out the opposition added two late points to break our hearts.

Overall this was a very good campaign for our players with team captain Alex Brown always leading by example, unfortunately he was replaced in this game due to injury. Defenders Evan Hayes, Luke Underwood Doyle and Seán Doocey worked very hard. Midfielder Ronan Power and forwards Jay Hearne, Victory Eddy-Atu and Kieran Kennedy were tireless throughout.

Congratulations to Ballymacarbry N. S. who were deserving winners on the day.

Panel: Conor Cummins, Conor Murphy, Luke Underwood Doyle, Alex Hoban Maguire, Sean Doocey, Cian Purcell, Evan Hayes, Ronan Power, Alex Browne (Captain), Jay Hearne, Owen Oseni, Victory Eddy-Atu, Kieran Kennedy, Aaron Wymberry, Conor O’Shea, Darragh O’Keeffe, Darragh Treacy, Cathal Power, Eoin Hearne, Ryan McCarthy, Mark Breen, Conor Fanning, Cian Troy.

    • East U-15 Hurling Final

De La Salle 3-8 Mount Sion 1-10

Our U-15 hurlers are eastern champions after they won a hard fought encounter with Mount Sion last Saturday in Walsh Park. Mount Sion started well and a goal in the second minute gave them an early lead. They kept that lead until the 22nd minute when Dylan Finn set up Thomas Douglas for a goal to level matters but Mount Sion edged in front again before the break to lead 1-5 to 1-4.

It was 1-6 each four minutes in to the second half when Dylan Finn found the net to put us ahead. With Conor Giles-Doran and Ian Condon impressing we went further ahead in the ninth minute when Dylan Finn got his second goal to put us ahead 3-6 to 1-7. Mount Sion fought back and narrowed the gap to a single score at 3-6 to 1-9 by the 14th minute. Helped by Thomas Douglas’ accuracy in the last ten minutes we outscored our opponents by 0-2 to 0-1 to secure a deserved victory after a fine contest.

After the game the cup was presented to team captain Eoghan Treacy by board chairman Jim Murphy.
Well done to the lads and the mentors Alan ‘Jack’ Duggan, Johnny Walsh, Pat Twomey and Willie Power. Thanks also to Elsie Clooney and Johann Carey for assisting with first aid.

    • St. Declan’s School

    Mini 7’s Football

Our Mini 7’s footballers came out second best in a highly competitive blitz played at Gracedieu on Tuesday Nov. 25th. We recorded a good win over Rathgormack in the first game. Ferrybank provided the opposition in the second game. We won this game by four points, St. Declan’s 1-5 Ferrybank 1-1. In the third game we faced Holycross. This was a low scoring but very competitive game. Holycross came out on top, Holycross 0-4 St. Declan’s 0-3.

This result meant that three teams had to play off. We again played Ferrybank and after extra time we progressed to the final on a scoreline that read. St. Declan’s 1-3 Ferrybank 1-2. In the final game Holycross proved too strong for us and they were deserving winners, Holycross 0-4 St. Declan’s 1-0.
