De La Salle 1-7 Newtown 1-6

Our intermediate footballers had their first win of the campaign when we came from behind to defeat Newtown in Walsh Park last Saturday. This was a game that could have gone either way with man of the match Seaghan Walsh’s goal six minutes from time proving the decisive score. From our point of view it was another chance to blood some more younger players, in addition to the lads introduced last week, with teenager Sean O’Keeffe and minors Sam Flynn and Aidan Gannon all making impressive debuts.

Newtown opened the scoring in the first minute and we equalised three minutes later when Paddy Kennedy pointed a fee after he was fouled himself. The next score came in the 14th minute when Paddy Kennedy pointed another free when John Mullane was fouled. Newtown levelled immediately before Seaghan Walsh, who was causing problems in the aerial duels, pointed twice in the 17th and 18th minutes. However, Newtown were back in front in the 19th minute when they got in for a goal

which was the last score of the half and they led 1-2 to 0-4 at the break.

Newtown stretched their lead in the second minute of the half and we got our first score in the ninth minute when Paddy Kennedy was fouled and he converted the free. Newtown got on top at this stage and added two points to lead 1-5 to 0-5 after twelve minutes. Seaghan Walsh reduced the arrears in the 16th minute and Lee Hayes made it a one point game in the 23rd minute. We were in front a minute later when Seaghan Walsh rose above the defence to finish Paddy Kennedy’s delivery to the net. The last score came in injury time when Newtown were awarded a free but the shot carried over crossbar and the final whistle sounded

Scorers: Seaghan Walsh 1-3, Paddy Kennedy 0-3 (frees), Lee Hayes 0-1.

Panel: Donal Carey, Ryan Duke, Colm Clancy, Sean O’Keeffe, Evan Whelan, Thomas Kearney, David Kennedy, Sean Carton, Kenneth Byrne (captain), John Mullane, Sam Flynn, Aidan Gannon, Matthew Barden, Seaghan Walsh, Paddy Kennedy, Lee Hayes, Dylan Foley, Eddie Meaney, Joey Twomey, David Dennison.

Best of luck to Niall O’Keeffe and the Waterford minor footballers who play Tipperary in Leamybrien this Wednesday.

    • Sean Roche

We lost another link to our 1958 County senior football championship winning side when full back Sean Roche passed away last week. Sean was a native of Wexford and made a massive contribution in his adopted city in many ways including GAA and politics. He also featured in one of the greatest days for Waterford senior footballers when they shocked Kerry in the Munster championship in 1957. That team was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the county board awards night in January but unfortunately Sean was unable to attend. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Mary and his family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

We had two U-11 hurling teams in action this week. One team played both St. Marys and St. Mollerans with a win over St. Marys and defeat at the hands of St. mollerans. Our other U-11 suffered defeat at the hands of Mount Sion after a terrific game. Our U-14 football team saw plenty action this week, defeating Clann na Gael early in the week. They also qualified for the U-14 county Feile final by defeating Roanmore, St. Marys and The Nire. The final of this competition will be played shortly

    Feile B Competition :

Well done to our U-14 girls who have qualified for the National Feile Finals which takes place later this year in June. We hosted our group on Thurs 19th April in Gracedieu. 3 teams were down to participate but Brickeys were unabe to attend. It was a winner takes all game v Lismore. Both teams served up a great game with play swaying from end to end with our girls victorious at the final whistle on a scoreline of 5-3 to 2-1. We had a panel of 21 girls for this game with all girls getting game time.

The Feile B semi finals and& final were scheduled for Sunday 22nd April at the WIT Arena. All teams were minus players due to prior commitments. We had 15 girls available for the semi final v Butlerstown and all the girls played fantastic throughout the semi final. We were victorious on a scoreline of DLS 6-0 Butlerstown 0-1.

Next up was the other semi final and after another fantastic game Abbeyside won v Dungarvan 0-3 to 0-1.

DLS v Abbeyside was the final pairing. We started with the same 15 girls with 1 more girl available to us before half time. Our girls from the first whistle till the final whistle showed great energy determination skill and commitment, running out winners on a scoreline of DLS 2-4 Abbeyside 0-1. Well done to all 4 teams for 3 very competitive sporting and entertaining games.

Great celebrations at the final whistle from a great bunch of girls. Onwards now to the National Feile Finals in June. Many thanks to everyone for the great support on both days for the girls.

Kilmacthomas 3-9 De La Salle 2-7

Our intermediate footballers lost their opening game of the new championship format when we went down to Kilmacthomas in Carrickbeg last Saturday. Kilmacthomas were the better team on the day but from our point of view it was a chance to blood some younger players with Evan Whelan, Sean Carton, Adam Deegan, Seaghan Walsh, James Stone making their debuts at this level and Donal Carey and Luke Flynn playing only their second game, there were positives for us from the game.

Despite us having first use of the wind, Kilmacthomas dominated the early exchanges and kicked several wides before we opened the scoring in ninth minute when Paddy Kennedy and Adam Deegan combined for John Mullane to finish low to the net. A foul on Seaghan Walsh saw Paddy Kennedy point a free in the 11th minute but we were rocked in the 17th minute when Kilmacthomas goaled. Points in the 27th and 28th minutes saw Kilmacthomas take the lead but good work by Thomas Kearney, John Mullane and Seaghan Walsh saw Paddy Kennedy point to make it 1-2 each at half time.

We got a great start to the second half when Stephen Dalton got inside the defence in the first minute but was dragged down and Paddy Kennedy crashed the resultant penalty to the roof of the net. Kilmacthomas were back on level terms later with a well worked goal three minutes later before Paddy Kennedy put us back in front in the sixth minute when he pointed a free after he was fouled himself. We then missed a great chance of another goal before Kilmacthomas took over and hit four unanswered points to lead 2-6 to 2-3 midway through the half. The introduction of Lee Hayes had an impact for us as he pointed in the 16th minute and three minutes late won a free which Paddy Kennedy converted to make it a one point game. However, that was as close as we came as Kilmacthomas added 1-3 between the 22nd and 28th minutes without reply. Credit to our lads they kept going to the end and we added late points from Kenneth Byrne and Stephen Dalton.

Scorers: Paddy Kennedy 1-4 (1-0 penalty, 0-3 frees), John Mullane 1-0, Lee Hayes, Kenneth Byrne and Stephen Dalton 0-1 each.

Panel: Donal Carey, Ryan Duke, Kenneth Byrne (captain), Luke Flynn, Evan Whelan, Stephen Dalton, David Kennedy, Sean Carton, Thomas Kearney, John Mullane, Adam Deegan, Donal Barron, Matthew Barden, Seaghan Walsh, Paddy Kennedy, Lee Hayes, James Stone, David Dennison.

    • Juvenile Report

It was an active week in the juvenile club with four games played during the week, split evenly between hurling and football. The week began with our U-11 hurling team making their competitive debut with a visit to Glenmore in the City League. This was a very competitive match with our opponents being a little more accurate in front of goal to record a victory for the home team. This was the first competitive action for a number of our players and they will benefit from the experience.

Our U-12 hurling team recorded a fine win over St. Mollerans in their division of City League.

In football our U-14 and U-16 teams saw action this week and both had fine victories over St. Mollerans. It seems to have been our week to play them.

Our U-16 team made it three wins in a row with a win in a very entertaining match in Gracedieu. Our

U-14 team also had a worthy win over the same opponents on Saturday. This was an excellent win against our very accomplished opponents who were missing a number of key players.

    • De La Salle 0-14 Tallow 1-8

Our senior hurlers maintained their unbeaten start with a hard fought victory over Tallow on a sticky pitch in Fraher Field last Sunday. Minus three starters from the win over Fourmilewater, Shane McNulty, Conor Giles Doran and Dean Twomey plus Eddie Barrett and Ian Flynn who were introduced, we started poorly and at once stage trailed by seven points. We were fortunate to be only four in arrears at the break but gained control in the second half and got the vital scores when it mattered. Credit to both sets of players for producing a close contest in conditions not conducive to hurling.

Tallow opened with three early points before we opened our account in the ninth minute with a Shane Ryan free after Eoin Madigan was fouled. Tallow added another two points before striking for the only goal of the game in the 15th minute to lead 1-5 to 0-1. Two Shane Ryan frees in the 18th and 24th minutes after fouls on Eddie Meaney and Paddy Kennedy followed by our first score from play in the 30th minute from Cormac McCann saw us trail 1-5 to 0-4 at the interval. We began the second half playing much better and two frees from Shane Ryan after fouls on Eddie Meaney and Eoin Madigan either side of an Adam Farrell point saw the lead down to the minimum after ten minutes.

The next score came in the 17th minute and it was Tallow’s first in half an hour but two further frees from Shane Ryan saw it level 0-9 to 1-6 with ten minutes left. We took the lead for the first time in the 22nd minute with a point from Cormac McCann after good work by Eddie Meaney but Tallow equalised immediately. An excellent Eoin Madigan point put us back in front in the 24th minute and

Cormac McCann added another a minute later. Tallow reduced the margin to the minimum in the 26th minute but two minutes later Kevin Moran sent over a superb strike from the sideline. Tallow tried for a late score but the final word went to substitute Thomas Douglas who sent over in the 33rd minute to secure the win.

Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-7 (frees), Cormac McCann 0-3, Adam Farrell, Eoin Madigan, Kevin Moran and Thomas Douglas 0-1 each.

Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Stephen Dalton, Kenneth Byrne, Paddy Kennedy, Mikey Costigan, Jake Dillon (captain), Tom Moran, Shane Ryan, Paidi Nevin, Adam Farrell, Kevin Moran, Jack Fagan, Cormac McCann, Eddie Meaney, Eoin Madigan, Thomas Douglas, Donal Carey, Brian Cunningham, Gavin Coppinger, Lee Wall, Adam Doyle, Evan Whelan, Luke Flynn, Matthew Barden, Ryan Duke, Sean Carton, Thomas Kearney, Conor Giles Doran, Shane McNulty, Dean Twomey, Ian Flynn, Eddie Barrett, Michael Doherty.

    Eamon O’Mahony RIP

It was with great sadness on Sunday April 1st. 2018 that we learned of the passing of Eamon O’Mahony, former principal of St Declan’s School. We extend our sincere sympathy to Margaret his wife, daughters Sharon, Andrea, Deirdre and Eimear, his son John, his grandchildren, Sean, Daire and Conor play for our juvenile teams, and his brothers Jerry and Albert. Eamon served practically all of his teaching career in St. Declan’s Primary School. He was appointed principal in 1994 when Br. Finbarr FSC retired. Eamon’s dedication and leadership qualities were second to none. He worked tirelessly to maintain the La Sallian ethos of St. Declan’s and the school went from strength to strength during his time as principal. He was a firm believer in the important part that sport had to play in the growth and development of young people. All sports and Gaelic Games in particular prospered under his stewardship. His contribution to the wider community and De La Salle GAA Club was enormous and for this we in De La Salle GAA will be forever grateful.

De La Salle 4-17 Fourmilewater 1-15

Our senior hurlers got the new campaign off to a good start with a comprehensive victory in Fraher Field last Saturday over a Fourmilewater side who have always proved difficult opponents in the past. Led by an outstanding display from Shane McNulty in the half back line and with Cormac McCann, in his first start, and Jack Fagan prominent in the scoring stakes we were always comfortable throughout. It was a game that also marked the championship debut of last year’s minor Conor Giles Doran and he acquitted himself well until he became one of three injury enforced second half retirements.

We opened the scoring in the first minute with a Shane Ryan free after Jack Fagan was fouled but Fourmilewater equalised two minutes later. We took control then with points from Cormac McCann and Jack Fagan either side of an Adam Farrell goal. Both sides then exchanged two points each with ours coming from Kevin Moran and Cormac McCann to make it 1-5 to 0-3 with only ten minutes played. Fourmilewater then added another point before Cormac McCann struck for our second goal in the 12th minute. Fourmilewater then hit two points before Shane Ryan, Dean Twomey and Jack Fagan all pointed to make it 2-8 to 0-6 after twenty minutes. Another exchange of points involving Kevin Moran was followed by three Fourmilewater points. Paidi Nevin then pointed for us before a Fourmilewater free saw us go in the half time leading 2-10 to 0-11.

We took over on the restart and a goal and a point each from Cormac McCann and Jack Fagan along with points from Shane Ryan and Eoin Madigan had us ahead 4-14 to 0-11 after eleven minutes. Fourmilewater then pointed twice before Shane Ryan and Eoin Madigan replied for us to make it 4-16 to 0-13 with ten minutes left. Fourmilewater appeared to score a point at this stage which was not recorded on the scoreboard and led to some confusion after the game about the final score. Shane Ryan had our final score in the 25th minute from a free and two minute later Fourmilewater goaled from a free and then added another point also from a free to end the scoring.

Scorers: Cormac McCann 2-3, Jack Fagan 1-3, Shane Ryan (0-4 frees, 0-1 ‘65) 0-5, Adam Farrell 1-0, Kevin Moran and Eoin Madigan 0-2 each, Dean Twomey and Paidi Nevin 0-1 each.

Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Conor Giles Doran, Kenneth Byrne, Paddy Kennedy, Shane McNulty, Jake Dillon (captain), Tom Moran, Shane Ryan, Paidi Nevin, Adam Farrell, Kevin Moran, Jack Fagan, Cormac McCann, Dean Twomey, Eoin Madigan, Ian Flynn, Stephen Dalton Eddie Barrett, Donal Carey, Brian Cunningham, Mikey Costigan, Gavin Coppinger, Lee Wall, Adam Doyle, Evan Whelan, Luke Flynn, Matthew Barden, Ryan Duke, Sean Carton, Thomas Kearney, Thomas Douglas, Eddie Meaney, Michael Doherty.

Our U-14 and U-16 football teams have been playing in their respective competitions.

Our U-16 team have played three games losing two and winning one. They have been defeated by both St Patricks and Brickey Rangers. They recorded their first win on Wednesday last with a 5-2 to 2-5 win over Clann na Gael.

Our U-14 team and Mount Sion had the rare opportunity to play each other in a football match at Gracedieu on Friday last. It is laudable that both clubs are competing in the football competition and both sides had a number of players who competed very well at this level. De La Salle scored a couple of fortuitous goals early on to set up a victory against our very accomplished neighbours
