De La Salle 0-14 Fenor 0-14

Our intermediate hurlers shared the spoils with Fenor after a hard battle in Walsh Park last Saturday. Having trailed throughout we took the lead with five minutes to go only for Fenor to go back in front in injury time and we were relieved to get the draw in the end.

Fenor opened with two points before Brian Cunningham pointed in the fourth minute after Sean Carton was fouled. Brian Cunningham, Kevin Hennessy and Gavin Coppinger all replied to further Fenor points to leave it 0-5 to 0-4 midway through the half. Fenor pointed in the 16th minute and three minutes later it took an outstanding save from Donal Carey to prevent a goal. Fenor pointed again in the 21st minute before points from Brian Cunningham, Evan Whelan and Kevin Hennessy levelled matters by the 26th minute. Two late points from Fenor saw them lead 0-9 to 0-7 at the break. Fenor stretched their lead with two early points before Brian Cunningham replied with two. Fenor pointed again to lead 0-12 to 0-9 midway through the half. We began to take control and four unanswered points from Kevin Hennessy, Evan Whelan (2) and Brian Cunningham to lead by one. We missed a few chances before Fenor equalised in the 31st minute and went back in front from a free a minute later. We were relieved when Brian Cunningham slotted over a free in the 34th minute to salvage a draw.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-7 (0-4 frees), Kevin Hennessy and Evan Whelan 0-3 each, Gavin Coppinger 0-1.

De La Salle 4-16 St. Mollerans 1-11

Our junior hurlers had their second win of the campaign when they travelled to Carrickbeg and defeated St. Mollerans last Friday in a game that was tougher than the final scoreline would suggest. Playing with the wind St. Mollerans hit over some fine points in the first half but goals from James Stone and Aidan Gannon saw us leading 2-5 to 0-9 at half time. The second half was still tight and when St. Mollerans goaled it was all square at 2-8 to 1-11. However, the introduction of minor James Cotter proved a master stroke by player manager Alan Fitzgerald as James hit 2-1 to turn a close game into a comfortable victory.

Panel: Conor Bohane, Colm Maher, Kevin Gahan, Jack O’Donohoe, Mark Joy-Kinsella, David Sutton, Thomas Kenny, Conor Dunphy, Conor O’Toole, Lee Hayes, Stephen Jacob, James Stone, Aidan Gannon, Ciaran Corrigan, Niall Walsh, Christopher Sheehan, Tom Crotty, James Cotter, Eddie Johnson, Alan Fitzgerald, Sean Connolly.

De La Salle 3-14 Mount Sion 1-10

Our minor hurlers began their season with a victory over an understrength Mount Sion team in Gracedieu last Tuesday. This was a good win given that we played most of the second half with fourteen men. However, with our lead at only two points, this decision seemed to spur us on and helped by three goals we secured the points.

Three points from Aidan Gannon and one from Sam Flynn helped us to a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after twelve minutes. Dylan Finn got the game’s first point from play a minute later. A Sam Flynn sixty five and three Aidan Gannon frees helped us to a 0-9 to 0-5 half time lead. Mount Sion pointed from the throw in and converted a free in the seventh minute after the sending off. We responded with Dylan Finn being fouled in the 12th minute and Seaghan Walsh goaling from the resultant penalty. In the 15th minute Reuben Halloran collected a Colm Maher clearance and raced through the defence before expertly finishing to the net. Kevin Hennessy then scored an excellent point in the 18th minute. Mount Sion added points either side of an Aidan Gannon free before Dylan Finn got the goal his performance deserved to make it 3-11 to 0-9 after twenty five minutes. Aidan Gannon added two frees before Mount Sion goaled from a free. Kevin Hennessy ended our scoring with a point from distance in the 32d minute and Mount Sion replied a minute later to end the scoring.

Scorers: Aidan Gannon 0-9 (frees), Dylan Finn 1-1, Seaghan Walsh (penalty) and Reuben Halloran 1-0 each, Sam Flynn (0-1 free, 0-1 ‘65) and Kevin Hennessy 0-2 each.

Tramore 1-9 De La Salle 1-3

A poor performance by our intermediate footballers saw them defeated again by Tramore in Tramore last Friday. With only five players from our championship winning side of 2013 lining out we have several young inexperienced players playing who hopefully will progress at this level. While Tramore were the better team and deserving winners we did not help ourselves by failing to convert three scoreable frees on a night we struggled to create chances.

Playing with the breeze Tramore kicked three points between the third and sixth minutes. We were level a minute later when Aidan Gannon found Eddie Meaney and he set up John Mullane to finish to the net. Tramore regained the lead in the 15th minute but Thomas Kearney equalised a minute later after good work by Sean O’Keeffe. Tramore were back in front in the 20th minute when they got in for a goal and they added points in the 21st and 24th minutes to lead 1-6 to 1-1 at the break. It got better for them with two further points in the first two minutes of the second half. There was no more scoring until the 18th minute when Tramore pointed a free to make it 1-9 to 1-1. John Mullane got our first score in over half an hour when he pointed a minute later and he ended the scoring in the 22nd minute when he took over the free taking and converted after Thomas Kearney was fouled.

Scorers: John Mullane 1-2 (0-1 free), Thomas Kearney 0-1.

Panel: Donal Carey, Ryan Duke, Christopher Sheehan, Luke Flynn Evan Whelan, Colm Clancy, Sean O’Keeffe Thomas Kearney, Eoin Madigan, John Mullane, Lee Hayes, Donal Barron, Eddie Meaney, Kenneth Byrne (captain), Aidan Gannon, Mark Joy-Kinsella, Shane Burke, Jack O’Donohoe.

De La Salle 1-10 Dungarvan 0-13

Our senior hurlers secured a quarter final place after a hard fought draw with Dungarvan in sun soaked Walsh Park last Friday. The draw was probably the fairest result in a game which saw both sides reduced to fourteen players in the second half and the point gained was enough to see us top the group.

Eddie Meaney opened the scoring inside the first minute and despite a second point from Kevin Moran we found ourselves trailing 0-5 to 0-2 after ten minutes. Shane Ryan pointed in the 12th minute and we were in front two minutes later when Eddie Meaney struck for the only goal of the game. Adam Farrell increased our lead in the 15th minute before we stopped for a water break. Two Dungarvan points in the 26th and 27th minutes levelled matters before Eddie Meaney’s shot for goal carried over the bar. Kevin Moran increased our lead from a free after he was fouled before Dungarvan replied with a point. A foul on Adam Farrell saw us awarded a penalty but it was saved by the goalkeeper to leave us ahead 1-6 to 0-8 at half time. Kevin Moran pointed a free after another foul on himself in the fifth minute and Shane Ryan made it a three point game with a long range free in the 13th minute. Points in the 17th and 19th minutes for Dungarvan reduced the lead to the minimum before Cormac McCann set up Adam Farrell for a point in the 20th minute. Dungarvan pointed a sixty five before Paidi Nevin got our final score in the 22nd minute. However, points in the 28th and 30th minutes secured the draw for Dungarvan.

Scorers: Eddie Meaney 1-2, Kevin Moran 0-3 (0-2 frees), Shane Ryan (0-1 free) and Adam Farrell 0-2 each, Paidi Nevin 0-1.

De La Salle 1-18 Ballyduff Lower 1-17

An injury time point from Bryan Phelan gave our intermediate hurlers their first win of the campaign after a close and hard fought contest with Ballyduff Lower in Dunhill last Saturday. Considering we had just a bare fifteen players available and we trailed by six points eleven minutes into the second half this was a very good result for what is a young team. It was a game that saw minor player Dylan Finn make his debut at this level having played in the junior game two days earlier.

Ballyduff Lower opened their account in the third minute but we replied with points from Brian Cunningham, Evan Whelan and Bryan Phelan by the eight minute. An exchange of points involving Brian Cunningham followed and Ballyduff Lower then added three points in a row before Dylan Finn levelled matters in the 20th minute. The teams then exchanged two points each with Brian Cunningham accounting for ours before Ballyduff Lower pointed in injury time to lead 0-8 to 0-7 at the break.

Ballyduff Lower began the second half well scoring 1-1 in the first three minutes. Matthew Barden and Brian Cunningham replied for us but Ballyduff Lower came back with two more points of their own. Bryan Phelan pointed but another two Ballyduff Lower points made it 1-13 to 0-10 after eleven minutes. Three Brian Cunningham points reduced the arrears and we were level in the 17th minute when Seaghan Walsh got on the end of Eoin Casey’s delivery to deflect it to the net. Thomas Kearney and Matthew Barden twice put us ahead with Ballyduff Lower equalising before they hit the front in the 24th minute. Brian Cunningham equalised a minute later and Sam Flynn put us ahead with a long range strike. Ballyduff Lower equalised in the 31st minute before Bryan Phelan collected a pass and hit over a magnificent point from his own half. Ballyduff Lower had two chances to equalise but failed to convert them as we held on for the win

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-9 (frees), Bryan Phelan 0-3 (0-2 frees), Seaghan Walsh 1-0, Matthew Barden 0-2, Evan Whelan, Dylan Finn, Thomas Kearney and Sam Flynn 0-1 each.

    County Final U-16 Division 2

Kilrossanty 4-12 De La Salle 2-9

Our U-16 footballers were defeated by Kilrossanty in the Division 2 county final at Walsh park on Sunday last. Whilst Kilrossanty deserved their victory the scoreline was harsh on our lads with Kilrossanty’s fourth goal coming with virtually the last kick of the game. There was only a point between the sides at the interval with Kilrossanty holding the advantage. We started the second half well and a goal had us two points ahead. It was in the next ten minutes that Kilrossanty laid the foundation for their victory scoring 1-4 without reply, some of the points were of top quality. In fairness to our lads they continued to battle to the very end. Congratulations to Kilrossanty on their victory. Thanks to the management team of Kieran Wymberry, Conor Bohane and Kyle Synott for their excellent work with this team.

    Portlaw/Ballyduff 2-8 De La Salle 1-8

A poor first half performance proved our undoing when we went down to Portlaw/Ballyduff in this final played in Walsh Park last Sunday. Three minutes into the second half we found ourselves trailing by nine points to opponents who were in total control but our lads fought back to reduce the margin to three and but for a combination of resolute defending and missed chances including hitting the woodwork on three occasions proving too much for us, Portlaw /Ballydufff held out for a victory based on their excellent first half performance.

The game began with Portlaw/Ballyduff scoring 1-1 in the first three minutes. Aidan Gannon opened our account with a point in the ninth minute but ten minutes later we trailed 1-5 to 0-1. A brilliant goal from Sam Flynn gave us hope but our opponents replied with two points. Seaghan Walsh, who had earlier seen a fisted goal attempt come back off the post, pointed but with the last attack of the half Portlaw/Ballyduff goaled to lead 2-7 to 1-2 at the break. Three minutes into the second half Portlaw/Ballyduff stretched their lead to nine points with what proved to be their last score. County minor Niall O’Keeffe then began to have a major influence on the game pointing from play after seven minutes and converting a free three minutes later after he was fouled himself. He added another point in the 13th minute after a foul on Thomas Douglas who was out of luck with a goal attempt. Eddie Meaney pointed a forty five but was unfortunate to then see his cracking shot rattle the crossbar. Niall O’Keeffe pointed after another foul on himself and Thomas Douglas made it a three point game in the 23rd minute. That was as good as it got with Portlaw/Ballyduff seeing out the game for a hard fought win.

Congratulation to Portlaw/Ballyduff and we wish them well in the county final. Thanks to our lads and their mentors David Whittle, Mitchell Casey and Eamonn Dalton with Joe Kenny on first aid for their efforts.

The first half was an even affair with the sides level 0-8 each at half time. We opened up a two point lead before a Passage goal in the 10th minute gave them a lead they never lost. Three late unanswered points gave them a winning margin of six points.

Our U-16 footballers qualified for the Division 2 County final with a hard earned 3-7 to 1-11 win over an excellent St Pats side at Leamybrien on Wednesday night last. This was a very good game of football between two very evenly matched sides. St. Pats had the better of the first half and led by two points at the break. However our lads played really well at the start of the second half and a couple of goals and points saw us turn the arrears around. St Pats responded and reduced the gap to two points with a few minutes remaining. Our lads defended resolutely and emerged victorious. This was a great victory for this hard working team and their management. They have a county final against favourites Kilrossanty to look forward to at a date to be confirmed.

Our U-14 footballers also defeated St. Pats on Tuesday night in sunny Bonmahon in the Division 2 County Feile final on a score of 4-3 to 1-2 to earn a visit to the National Feile at the end of June. This was an excellent win against a very good side. A quick start of a couple of goals set the side up for the win. The team also added a goal before half time and the shortened version of the Feile format mitigated against a comeback by St. Pats who battled to the very end.

Our U-11 hurling teams had two matches recently. One of our teams drew with Ballygunner at Gracedieu in an excellent game of hurling. There has to be credit given to both sets of players for producing such a great game. The other U-11 team had a very good win against Mooncoin on Thursday last. This match was very evenly balanced until a couple of good goals swung it our way.

De La Salle 0-18 Fourmilewater 1-11

Our senior hurlers maintained their unbeaten start to the year with a win over Fourmilewater in Gracedieu last Saturday. Fourmilewater made the perfect start and led 1-1 to 0-0after three minutes but we played our way in to the game to lead 0-8 to 1-4 at half time. The sides were level ten minutes in to the second half before we hit four unanswered points to lead 0-14 to 1-7 and we maintained that gap to the finish.

    • Juvenile news

Our U-14 football team conceded a walkover to St. Marys on Saturday last as we didn’t have enough players to field a team. Our U-16 footballers were comprehensively beaten by an excellent Kilrossanty side at Leamybrien on Friday last. This is the first defeat in three matches for this hard working group, who can still make the semi final. They have a winner take all match versus Dungarvan in Dungarvan on Wednesday next. Our U-12 hurlers had a one point victory over Portlaw at Gracedieu on Friday last. This was an extremely close affair between two very committed teams
