    • I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here

The long awaited major fundraiser for the year based on the TV show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here finally took place in the Tower Hotel last Saturday night and it did not disappoint. The event which was jointly sponsored by Hooper Dolan Insurances and Tile and Style played out in front of a packed attendance who were hugely entertained by what turned out to be a fabulous event.

Twenty four contestants as follows Rose Madigan, John Mullane, Owen Dunphy, Majella Dunphy, Evan Whelan, Jake Dillon, David Sutton, Jade O’Reilly, Kevin Moran, Donal Carey, Thomas Kearney, Ryan Duke, Dejana Obradovic, David Greene, Eddie Mulligan, Vanessa Casey, Barry Murphy, Ciara Twomey, Shane Quinlan, Mark Cooney, Danielle Flynn, Shane McNulty, Dean Twomey, Bryan Phelan all participated in a series of gruelling tasks before the number of contestants was eventually whittled down to Rose Madigan, Thomas Kearney and Barry Murphy and after a final eliminator Thomas and Barry went through to the final.

Just before the final began news came from the City West Hotel that Beth Carton, who had originally planned to be a contestant, had been selected on the camogie All Star team of 2018 and the announcement was greeted with loud cheering. After the final the ‘butcher boy’ Thomas Kearney emerged as the King of the Jungle. We compliment all the contestants on their efforts in fundraising prior to the night and on their participation on the night. We appreciate the work put in by all twenty four of you.

We thank all the organising committee of Ian Flynn, Ellen Doyle, Matthew Barden, Ricky Grogan, Tommy Ryan, Peter Hearne, Paddy Kennedy and Eoin Casey on running a fantastic show. We would like to thank all our sponsors mentioned in the programme and to Empower Events for running the show. Thanks also to the Tower Hotel for hosting a never to be forgotten night.

    • County Hurling Final U-16 Division 2

De La Salle 1-8 Tramore 0-8

Our U-16 hurlers were crowned county champions after their victory in the division 2 final against a determined Tramore side in a cold and windy Kill GAA grounds on Saturday morning. In what were extremely difficult conditions for hurling we prevailed on a scoreline of 1-08 to 0-08. Our lads showed lots of resilience to come from behind and hold out for a determined victory.

We started slowly playing against an extremely strong wind and trailed by 4 points to 1 at half time with Cormac Dawson pointing our only score from a free after the doubled marked Reuben Halloran was fouled. With the wind such a factor, huge credit goes to our players who fought hard to keep Tramore without a goal in the first half led by goalkeeper Darragh Treacy. In such conditions a goal was going to have a huge bearing on the result.

We started the second half very brightly and got that all important goal inside the first two minutes. Full forward Reuben Halloran beat his two markers before passing to the oncoming Alex Keane who slotted to the net. Cormac Dawson put us ahead a minute later for the first time with a pointed free after Jack Twomey was fouled.

It was a lead we wouldn’t relinquish for the remainder of the game. Reuban Halloran followed up with two pointed frees before Tramore struck back with two points of their own. With pressure mounting on our defence and scores hard to come Cormac Dawson scored two huge points from frees inside our own half to stretch our lead back to three. David Ryan followed up with a point from play before Tramore pointed a free to leave just a goal between the teams with five minutes left.

Credit goes to Tramore who fought determinedly against the wind to try get an equalizing goal but our defence held out led by full back Aaron Wymberry.

There was great scenes at the final whistle and when the trophy was presented to team captain Reuben Halloran.

A huge congratulations to our lads who have worked extremely hard all year having also reached the football county final earlier this season and got just rewards for their efforts.

A big thanks to our mentors, players parents and juvenile chairman Paudie Brosnan for their contribution throughout the year.

    • East Junior B Hurling Championship Semi Final

De La Salle 2-14 Mount Sion 1-8

Our junior hurlers qualified for the final where they will take on Kilmacthomas, with a good win over Mount Sion in Walsh Park last Saturday.

The early exchanges were even with points from Luke Lalor and Adam O’Sullivan making it 0-2 each after seven minutes. A minute later Mount Sion goaled. Adam O’Sullivan pointed a free in the 10th minute before two Mount Sion points saw them lead 1-4 to 0-3 after fourteen minutes. We dominated the rest of the half and points from Stephen Jacob (2), Adam O’Sullivan, Lee Hayes and Conor Bohane put us ahead before an injury time goal from Stephen Jacob made it 1-8 to 1-4 at the break.

David Sutton opened the second half scoring in the second minute but three minutes later we were reduced to fourteen players. Aidan Gannon pointed a free in the seventh minute and there was no further scoring until Mount Sion pointed in the 16th minute. Eamonn Fitzgerald pointed in the 19th minute and two Mount Sion points in the 23rd and 25th minutes made it 1-11 to 1-7. However, we finished strongly with points from Aidan Gannon and a superb score from Lee Hayes before man of the match Stephen Jacob scored his second goal after an excellent run and finish in injury time. There was still time for Eamonn Fitzgerald to point before the final whistle sounded.

    • East Intermediate Football Championship

Kill 4-12 De La Salle 1-8

Our intermediate football team exited the championship when we were well beaten by Kill in Walsh Park last Sunday evening. Once again, the damage was done in the first half when the concession of three goals in six minutes ended the game as a contest and even though we improved in the second half we were unable to make any inroads into the winners margin

Kill began well and led 0-5 to 0-0 after ten minutes but were thankful to their goalkeeper who saved well in that period. Thomas Douglas opened our account in the twelfth minute but Kill replied with three points as we continued to miss the few chances we created. Paddy Kennedy pointed a free in the 21st minute after a foul on Mitchell Casey but Kill replied immediately with their first goal. Eddie Meany scored a fine point and we then missed a free before Kill got their second goal. A well worked free between Paddy Kennedy and Mitchell Casey saw Mitchell’s shot for goal go over off the crossbar and Kill then struck for their third goal to lead 3-8 to 0-4 at the break.

The second half began with Kill pointing and Thomas Douglas replied in the fifth minute. Kill added 1-2 in the next ten minutes to make it 4-11 to 0-5. David Kennedy pointed in the 17th minute and a minute Kill got their last score.

Conor Mullane pointed a forty five in the 23rd minute and then James Grogan scored a cracking goal. A fine save by the Kill keeper saw Conor Mullane end the scoring in the 28th minute when he converted another forty five.

Scorers: James Grogan 1-0, Thomas Douglas and Conor Mullane(‘45s) 0-2 each, Paddy Kennedy (free), Eddie Meaney, Mitchell Casey and David Kennedy 0-1 each.

    • County U-13 Hurling Final

De La Salle 6-5 St. Carthages 3-6

Pride of place this week goes to our U-13 hurlers who were crowned county champions in Walsh Park on Saturday afternoon. This was an excellent game of hurling with some really good players on both sides and it is fair to say that the eight point winning margin was not a true reflection of the game but we finished strongly scoring an unanswered 1-3 to secure the victory. Well done to both sets of players on making it a great contest.

St. Carthages made the better start and led 1-5 to 1-1 midway through the half. However, a first half hat trick by outstanding captain Jack Twomey and a brilliant defensive effort led by Conor Keane saw us lead 3-2 to 1-5 at the break. A fourth goal from Jack Twomey and an incredible finish by Jack Douglas looked to have secured the game but St. Carthages hit back and we led 5-2 to 3-6 with five minutes to go. St. Carthages spurned two goal chances before a composed finish from Daniel Lalor and three further points cued the celebrations when the cup was presented to Jack Twomey

    • County Senior Hurling Semi Final

Abbeyside 0-14 De La Salle 0-13

Our senior hurlers exited the championship when we lost to Abbeyside by the narrowest of margins in Fraher Field last Saturday. This was a game that was there to be won but, despite an outstanding second half display from Jake Dillon, poor shooting which saw our second half wide count alone hit double figures proved to be our undoing.

The first five minutes saw us on top and points from Shane Ryan, Adam Farrell and Eddie Meaney saw us lead 0-3 to 0-1. Three successive points saw Abbeyside take the lead but a foul on Eddie Meaney saw Shane Ryan level matters after nine minutes. Abbeyside regained the lead but two further fouls on Eddie Meaney resulted in two points for Shane Ryan and after Sean O’Brien saved brilliantly, Cormac McCann pointed and we led 0-7 to 0-5 midway through the half. We failed to score in the second quarter and Abbeyside hit five points to lead 0-10 to 0-7 at half time. We began the second half on top and points from Cormac McCann, Paidi Nevin and a Shane Ryan free after he was fouled himself made it all square after seven minutes but in truth we should have been ahead at this stage as we missed four good chances. Abbeyside went ahead in the 10th minute but Shane Ryan equalised two minutes later. A brilliant goal saving block by Jake Dillon led to Abbeyside converting the sixty five but from the puckout Paidi Nevin replied to make it 0-12 each. Immediately after Eddie Meaney had an excellent goal chance but was foiled. Shane Ryan pointed a sixty five in the 18th minute but this proved to be our last score. Abbeyside equalised in the 21st minute and hit the winner in the 25th minute. We had chances to equalise but it was not to be and the final whistle sounded

We extend our thanks to the management and players for their efforts this year and congratulate Abbeyside on their win and wish them well in the final

Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-7 (0-4 frees, 0-1 ’65), Cormac McCann and Paidi Nevin 0-2 each, Adam Farrell and Eddie Meaney 0-1 each.

    • County Minor Hurling Semi Final

Mount Sion 0-17 De La Salle 0-16

There was further disappointment on Sunday morning when our minor hurlers suffered the exact same fate as our seniors when we went down to Mount Sion by a point in a game played in Ballygunner. Credit to our lads who had fought back to level but Mount Sion came up with the winner when we thought we had earned a reprieve.

Early points from Aidan Gannon and Ruben Halloran had us ahead 0-2 to 0-1 after five minutes but by the 16th minute we trailed 0-5 to 0-2. Both teams added four points before half time with ours coming from Aidan Gannon (3) and Dan Casey to make 0-9 to 0-6 at the break. We began the second half with two points from the excellent Ruben Halloran but Mount Sion replied with two of their own. We got on top for a period and it was all square at 0-12 each by the 18th minute with four points from Aidan Gannon. Mount Sion regained control and hit three points in the next five minutes. Points from Aidan Gannon and Ruben Halloran reduced the arrears to the minimum but Mount Sion hit back with one. Kill 5-13 De La Salle 1-11

Our poor season at intermediate football continued last Saturday in Dunhill when our understrength team were well beaten by Kill. The damage was done in the first half when our inexperienced back line was constantly breached and we trailed 3-9 to 0-5 at the break. It got worse when we conceded 1-3 after the restart but credit to our players they dug in and gave a vastly improved performance for the rest of the half.

Kill began well and had 1-2 on the board by the seventh minute. John Mullane opened our account in the tenth minute. There followed an exchange of point involving a Mitchell Casey free after John Mullane was fouled before Kill hit 1-3 between the 14th and 17th minutes to lead 2-6 to 0-2. John Mullane pointed in the 18th minute but Kill replied immediately. A double exchange of points involved two Mitchell Casey frees after fouls on Lee Hayes and Jack Hannon before Kill struck for a third goal in the 27th minute to lead 3-9 to 0-5. It could have got worse before the break when they were awarded a penalty but David Dennison saved superbly.

The second half began with Kill adding 1-3 to their tally by the eight minute to make it 4-12 to 0-5. Points from Donal Barron and Mitchell Casey reduced the arrears before Kill got their fifth goal in the 17th minute. We added points from minor debutant Jack Hannon and Mitchell Casey before Mitchell Casey goaled in the 21st minute to make it 5-12 to 1-9. Kill pointed before we lost to John Mullane to injury and we scored late points by Lee Hayes and Sean Carton. Just before the end we almost got in for a second goal after a good move when Stephen Dalton got a touch ahead of the goalkeeper but it went narrowly wide.

Scorers: Mitchell Casey 1-5 (0-5 frees), John Mullane 0-2, Donal Barron, Jack Hannon, Lee Hayes and Sean Carton 0-1 each.

Pride of place this week goes to our U-12 girls who captured our third U-12 A County Title since our camogie clubs formation in 2009. The other 2 titles were won in 2010 & 2011. This final was played in Fraher Field Dungarvan on Sunday in front of a very large attendance. We were slow to start this game and trailed throughout the opening exchanges going in at the half time whistle 4 points down on a scoreline of 3-4 (13) to 2-3 (9). Our mentors rallied the troops at half time and the girls came out flying in the second half clawing back the deficit and then pushing on to take the lead. Our opponents kept coming back but our girls held on to run out deserved winners at the final whistle. The trophy was presented by the Waterford Camogie County Board Chairperson Ita Murphy to our U-12 club captain Sarah Sheehan.

Sarah also thanked the County Board and also praised our opponents Gailltir for a tough sporting game and gave them 3 cheers. Many thanks to all our supporters who showed up to the final and cheered on the team from start to finish, much appreciated. Afterwards in the dressing our club girls presented our captain Sarah with a signed DLS jersey as this was Sarah’s final U-12 game before she moves to Carlow.
