De La Salle 2-7 Naomh Deaglain Thoir 1-7

Our U-21 footballers had a hard earned victory over the Kilmacthomas/ Ballyduff Lower combination of Naomh Deaglain Thoir in the first round of the championship played in Kilmacthomas last Sunday. We went into this game as favourites but an inability to convert our chances, particularly when on top in the second half could have cost us this game.
Playing against the wind we opened the scoring in the second minute after a strong run from defence by James Coad. Naomh Deaglain Thoir equalised immediately but Robert Daniels restored our lead in the fifth minute from a free after Shane McNulty was fouled. Our opponents then scored three points between the 8th and 18th minutes to lead by two before Robert Daniels pointed a free in the 19th minute after a foul on himself. We should have taken the lead three minutes later when Robert Daniels was out of luck as his low shot beat the goalkeeper but failed to beat the pool of water on the goal line. Adam Farrell equalised in the 24th minute after good work by Shane McNulty but Naomh Deaglain Thoir finished the half strongly with two late points to lead 0-6 to 0-4 at half time.

We began the second half pointing twice inside the first three minutes through Ethan Hurley and Patrick Fitzgerald. However, our opponents struck back in the fourth minute with an excellent goal. We then created two goal chances but hit the side netting with both before Micheál Kavanagh, Patrick Fitzgerald and Robert Daniels combined for Dylan Foley to finish clinically to the net in the 11th minute. Three minutes later we were ahead when Shane McNulty found Robert Daniels and he rounded the goalkeeper to finish to the empty net and it was 2-6 to 1-6 midway through the half. We had a chance in the 17th minute to stretch our lead when Robert Daniels was grounded but he dragged his penalty just wide of the post. We were fortunate not to be pegged back in the 23rd minute when goalkeeper James Grogan had to go full stretch to save at the expenses of a fruitless ’45. A point from Ethan Hurley put us four clear in the 27th minute before our opponents ended the scoring with a point in injury time.

We expect to be in semi final action next weekend but the draw and fixture won’t be made until Tuesday night’s board meeting
