De La Salle 2-25 Portlaw 0-11

Our senior hurlers sponsored by John Kelly Opel had a comprehensive win over senior newcomers Portlaw in Walsh Park last Sunday. Given that we lined out without John Mullane, Jack Fagan, Shane Ryan, Eddie Meaney and Steven Daniels we were more than pleased to come away with the victory and with Stephen Dalton, Eoin Madigan, Shane McNulty and debutant Brian Cunningham all prominent we were never in any real danger of losing this game.

Portlaw made a bright start and led 0-3 to 0-1 after five minutes with Conan Watt being our scorer. We then took control of the game and nine points in a row from Brian Cunningham (6), Adam Farrell, Jake Dillon and Paidi Nevin saw us lead 0-10 to 0-3 after twenty seven minutes. Portlaw rallied with two points before Brian Cunningham ended the first half scoring to see us ahead 0-11 to 0-5 at half time. Portlaw began the second half with a point but Brian Cunningham, Adam Farrell and Kevin Moran replied to make it 0-14 to 0-6 after five minutes. Portlaw pointed in the sixth minute but points from Brian Cunningham and Shane McNulty made it 0-16 to 0-7 after eight minutes. Any lingering doubts about the result were ended in the next two minutes as first Kevin Moran picked out Jake Dillon from a line ball and Jake finished low to the net and then after Adam Farrell’s shot was saved by the Portlaw goalkeeper Brian Cunningham followed up to double the sliotar to the net. Both teams added two points in the next ten minutes with ours coming from Adam Farrell and Kevin Moran to make it 2-18 to 0-9.We then hit four consecutive points between the 23rd and 26th minutes from Kevin Moran, Conan Watt, Shane McNulty and David Greene before Portlaw scored their last two points of the game. We ended the game with three points in a row from Jake Dillon, Eddie Barrett and David Greene.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 1-9 (0-6 frees, 0-1 ’65), Jake Dillon 1-2, Adam Farrell and Kevin Moran 0-3 each, Conan Watt, Shane McNulty and David Greene 0-2 each, Paidi Nevin and Eddie Barrett 0-1 each.

De La Salle 0-15 Fenor 0-10

Our understrength intermediate hurlers maintained their unbeaten start to this year’s campaign when they had five points to spare over Fenor in Walsh Park last Saturday. Given that we were minus six players from our first round game it was a very good win but the margin was harsh on Fenor as the game was up for grabs until four late points sealed our victory.

Fenor began well and pointed two frees in the first five minutes. Points from Dylan Foley and Thomas Kearney levelled matters before Fenor pointed both from a free and from play to lead 0-4 to 0-2 after ten minutes. A foul on Colm Morris saw Adam O’Sullivan convert the free but Fenor pointed again in the 15th minute. Points from Dylan Foley and an Adam O’Sullivan free made it all square again before an injury time sixty five gave Fenor a half time lead of 0-6 to 0-5. Fenor doubled their lead from a free immediately after the restart but Adam O’Sullivan replied with a free in the third minute after Thomas Kearney was fouled. Fenor pointed in the 10th minute but we then hit four points in a row between the 12th and 18th minutes through Matthew Barden, Adam O’Sullivan, Colm Morris and Adam O’Sullivan again from a free after Robert Daniels was fouled. Back came Fenor with two points from a free and play to make 0-10 each after twenty three minutes. We regained the lead in the 25th minute with an excellent long range strike from Craig Dowling. We stretched the lead to two points in the 30th minute with another Adam O’Sullivan free and Adam then caught the puck out and sent it straight over the bar. Two fouls on Thomas Kearney in injury time were also converted by Adam to ensure the win.

Scorers: Adam O’Sullivan 0-9 (0-7 frees), Dylan Foley 0-2, Thomas Kearney, Matthew Barden, Colm Morris and Craig Dowling 0-1 each.

Panel: Kyle Sinnott, Adam Doyle, Kenneth Byrne, Paddy Kennedy, Mikey Costigan, Oran Keevers, Craig Dowling, Matthew Barden, Colm Morris, Robert Daniels, Johnny Keane, Dylan Foley, Ryan Duke, Thomas Kearney, Adam O’Sullivan, Philip Burke, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Evan Whelan, Ray Murphy.

De La Salle 3-11 Passage 0-11

Our junior hurlers  had their first win of the year when they had three goals to spare over Passage in an enjoyable encounter in Passage last Thursday. A good first half gave us a lead we retained throughout despite a strong fight back by our opponents before we eventually regained control.

We opened the scoring with points in the fourth and six minutes from Eamonn Fitzgerald from a free after Barry Twomey was fouled and Evan Whelan. Pointed frees in the 12th and 18th minutes saw Passage draw level. Eamonn Fitzgerald restored our lead in the 19th minute and Keith Cooney goaled in the 22nd minute after good work by Evan Whelan. A foul on Eoin Casey saw Eamonn Fitzgerald point again. Keith Cooney added another before Evan Whelan got our second goal created by Conor Dunphy and Barry Twomey to make it 2-5 to 0-2 after twenty six minutes. Passage pointed two frees before the break to reduce the lead to 2-5 to 0-4. Passage began the second half determinedly and scored three points in the first seven minutes to reduce our lead to four. However, we regained the momentum and four points from Conor O’Toole (2) and Eamonn Fitzgerald (2) made it 2-10 to 0-7 midway through the half. Back came Passage again with four points of their own between the 16th and 24th minutes to make it 2-10 to 0-11. The game was finally decided in the 27th minute when after Evan Whelan’s initial shot was saved by the goalkeeper, Barry Twomey got possession and crashed the ball to the roof of the net. Barry added a point a minute later to end the scoring.

Scorers:  Eamonn Fitzgerald 0-5 (0-4 frees), Evan Whelan, Keith Cooney and Barry Twomey 1-1 each, Conor O’Toole 0-3 (0-2 frees, 0-1 ’65).
