East Junior Football Championship
De La Salle 2-9 Ferrybank 1-7
Our junior footballers maintained their unbeaten start with a good win over Ferrybank in a hard fought encounter in Ferrybank last Wednesday. The fact that it was our third game and Ferrybank’s first told at the beginning as we opened up an early lead which we managed to maintain to the end. Kudos to Ferrybank who were making use of their new scoreboard for the first time in this game
Adam Deegan opened the scoring when he pointed inside the first minute and Keith Cooney added a second in the third. We goaled in the sixth minute when Mitchell Casey, Eoin Casey and Barry Twomey combined for Eamonn Fitzgerald to finish low to the net. Keith Cooney added his second point in the 13th minute and we led 1-3 to 0-0. Ferrybank then came more into the game and pointed twice in the 14th and 25th minutes to reduce the arrears. We got a boost three minutes later when Joey Twomey’s long range free bounced in the goalmouth and Martin Sheehan reacted first to punch the ball to the net to give us an interval lead of 2-3 to 0-2.
Ferrybank began the second half with a bang and scored 1-2 in the first four minutes to narrow the gap to two points. Joey Twomey settled the nerves with a point in the seventh minute after good work by Eoin Casey and Adam Deegan. The next score came in the 16th minute when Martin Sheehan pointed after a move involving Adam Deegan and Joey Twomey. Mitchell Casey added another a minute later. Ferrybank pointed in the 19th minute but Joey Twomey replied immediately after good play by Keith Cooney and Martin Sheehan. Back came Ferybank with another point in the 21st minute to make it 2-7 to 1-6. The excellent Eoin Casey set up Joey Twomey for another point in the 25th minute and Keith Cooney ended our scoring in the 30th minute with a fine kick off his left. The final act saw Ferrybank point in injury time before the whistle sounded.
