De La Salle 2-11 Abbeyside 1-12

Our senior hurler had a hard earned victory over Abbeyside in Walsh Park last Sunday in Round 2 of the championship. This was a game in which we were never allowed to dominate but we also missed several scoring chances including great goal opportunities in each half and were happy to come out with the points in the end.
We began well with Shane Ryan pointing a free after John Mullane was fouled in the first minute and three minutes later the same duo were involved as John set up Shane for a goal just after Abbeyside had equalised. The excellent Eddie Barrett pointed in the fifth minute helping us to a 1-2 to 0-1 lead. However, for the rest of the half we played second fiddle to Abbeyside and four points in a row gave them the lead. Adam Farrell equalised in the 18th minute. An exchange of points involving a Shane Ryan free after John Mullane was fouled saw it still level with five minutes to the break. Abbeyside then pointed twice but in between Dean Twomey was desperately unlucky not to goal and we trailed 0-9 to 1-4 at the interval.
A much improved second half performance saw us take the lead by the eight minute with points from Shane Ryan (’65), John Keane and a superb effort from Eddie Barrett. A minute later Dean Twomey created the chance for Shane Ryan to score his second goal with an excellent strike to give us a 2-7 to 0-9 lead. Both sides added 0-3 to their account with Shane McNulty, Paudie Nevin and Shane Ryan on the mark for us. Shane Ryan had a chance for his hat trick in this period but a great recovery hook denied him.
With three minutes to go Abbeyside got a goal that on another day may have been given as a square infringement but with time almost up Kevin Moran took a pass from David Greene and sent over an excellent score from near the sideline to secure victory.

Scorers: Shane Ryan 2-4 (0-2 frees, 0-1 ’65), Eddie Barrett 0-2, Adam Farrell, John Keane, Shane McNulty, Paudie Nevin and Kevin Moran 0-1 each.

Panel: John Coady, Oran Keevers, Ian Flynn, Stephen Dalton, Shane McNulty, Kevin Moran, Bryan Phelan, Jack Kennedy, Eddie Barrett, Paudie Nevin, Adam Farrell, Dean Twomey, Shane Ryan, John Mullane, John Keane, David Greene, Stevie Brenner, Adam O’Sullivan, Patrick Kennedy, Conan Watt, Thomas Kearney, Colm Morris, Tom Moran, Dylan Foley, David Sutton, Martin Sheehan, Patrick Flynn, Kenneth Byrne, Kyle Sinnott, Jamie Sage.
