De La Salle 1-7 Nire 0-8

Our minor footballers got the 2014 season off to a good start with a win over Nire in Ballymacarbry last Sunday morning when a late rally secured the points after a close fought encounter. Down three points with two minutes left a superb individual goal by Eddie Meaney brought us level before two late points by Jack Maher and Adam Doyle saw us come out on top. Nire might feel some what hard done by in that the woodwork deprived them of possible goals in both halves but credit to our lads for battling to the end.

Having suffered a pre match blow with Jack McCarthy unable to line out, we began sluggishly with both teams showing signs of rustiness. Nire pointed in the 4th, 18th and 22nd minutes before Eddie Meaney opened our account in the 29th minute to see us trail 0-3 to 0-1 at the interval. Both teams improved in the second half and three points from Eddie Meaney, James Coad and Jamie Roche had us ahead by the 11th minute but three minutes later it was all square. In what was now an entertaining game an exchange of points involving Jamie Roche saw it still level with ten minutes to go. Nire now took control and kicked three points between the 22nd and 25th minutes to lead 0-8 to 0-5. Then with two minutes to go came Eddie Meaney’s run and excellent finish to level matters again. In the last minute of normal time Jack Maher, who had been forced to retire in the first half and had come back on, pointed to put us ahead and in injury time Adam Doyle came upfield to kick another and secure the win.

Scorers: Eddie Meaney 1-2, Jamie Roche 0-2 (0-1 free), James Coad, Jack Maher and Adam Doyle 0-1 each.
Panel: Ciaran Brady, Conor Hogan, Michael Roche, David Farrell, Craig Dowling, James Coad, Adam Doyle, Evan Whelan, James Grogan, James Stone, Jack Maher, David Hogan, Aidan Lawless, Eddie Meaney, Jamie Roche, Colm Stockdale, Adam Hayes, Ryan Duke, Jack McCarthy.

    •  Championship Draws

Last Monday night saw the draws for the senior championship groups take place at the county board meeting. Our hurlers will face Lismore, Abbeyside, Fourmilewater, Roanmore and Passage in their group. The footballers will face St. Saviours, Stradbally, Gaultier, Nire and Balllinameela. At the same meeting it was decided to play the junior football ‘senior attached’ on an all county basis but no information on groups is to hand. The senior football is due to begin the weekend of 13th April and the senior hurling two weeks later.

On Tuesday night the eastern board made their draws and our intermediate hurlers are grouped with Portlaw, Erins Own, Tramore, St. Saviours and Ferrybank. The junior hurlers are paired with Ballygunner, Clones, Mount Sion, Passage and Roanmore and will play each team home and away. In U-21 football we have been drawn against Roanmore in the semi final and it is hoped to play this game on Saturday 1st March. The U-21 hurling draw will take place later.

    1. County U-21 Hurling Championship Final – De La Salle 3-13 St. Carthages 1-4

An outstanding performance by our U-21 hurlers saw them crowned county champions for the second time when we had a comprehensive victory over St. Carthages in Walsh Park last Sunday. Led by the outstanding Tom Moran in midfield we controlled this game from start to finish with our backs in total control, conceding only 1-1 from play, and our forwards working extremely hard throughout. In fairness to St. Carthages it has to be said that their preparations probably weren’t what they would have liked but on the day our lads were excellent.

Playing against the wind we started with two points from Shane Ryan and the excellent Patrick Flynn. Further points from Shane and Adam Farrell had us ahead 0-4 to 0-2 after ten minutes. A point from a ’65 from Shane Ryan after the goalkeeper had saved brilliantly from Jamie Sage was followed by Jamie Sage goaling with his next chance to give us a six point lead midway through the half. St. Carthages replied with a point and after we missed another goal chance they swept down the field to find the net and the gap was down to two. An exchange of points involving Adam Farrell followed before we finished the half with points from Tom Moran, Robert Daniels and Shane Ryan to lead 1-9 to 1-4 at half time.

Any chance of a St. Carthages comeback ended early in the second half when Jake Dillon (2), Jamie Sage and Shane Ryan all pointed in the first five minutes. This was followed in the sixth minute with Robert Daniels collecting Jack McCarthy’s long delivery before rounding the goalkeeper to shoot to the empty net to make it 2-13 to 1-4. Amazingly as the pitch cut up there was only one further score in the game when Dylan Foley took a pass from Jamie Sage and buried the ball in the bottom corner to seal the win.

There was great delight after the game as county chairman Tom Cunningham presented the cup to team captain Jake Dillon.

Congratulations to Jamie Sage who was named the official man of the match

Well done to the entire panel and team mentors of Bryan Phelan, Thomas Kearney, Peter Hearne, Donal Barron and Martin Doyle with thanks also to Mitchell Casey who was on on first aid duty. Commiserations to Ballyduff Upper.
Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-5 (0-4 frees, 0-1 ’65), Jamie Sage and Robert Daniels 1-1 each, Dylan Foley 1-0, Adam Farrell and Jake Dillon (0-1 free) 0-2 each, Patrick Flynn and Tom Moran 0-1 each.

Panel: Kyle Sinnott, Stephen Dalton, Shane McNulty, David Sutton, Adam O’Sullivan, Eoin Madigan, Jack McCarthy, Tom Moran, Jake Dillon, Patrick Flynn, Adam Farrell, Colm Morris, Jamie Sage, Robert Daniels, Shane Ryan, Dylan Foley, Adam Doyle, Thomas Kenny, Daragh Fitzpatrick, Jamie Roche, John O’Mahony.
