Phelan Cup County Senior Football League
Ballinacourty 2-17 De La Salle 1-4
Our senior footballers began life in the top grade with the tough task of playing away to the reigning county champions Ballinacourty last Friday night and were well beaten in the end. In fairness to our lads they battled hard to make a game of it for forty minutes but in the last twenty we had no answer to Ballinacourty’s power and accuracy as they scored 1-7 without reply. We can only hope that with more experience at this level some of the errors which led to preventable scores can be eradicated as the season progresses.
Both sides began minus four of their respective 2013 county title winning teams and we made the better start when Lee Hayes goaled in the seventh minute after Patrick Kenendy beat the goalkeeper only to see his shot come back off the crossbar. Ballinacourty opened their account in the ninth minute but two minutes later Ian Cantwell and Mitchell Casey combined for Lee Hayes to point. Ballinacourty were level by the 16th minute as poor shooting prevented us from adding to our tally. Further Ballinacourty points saw them lead 0-7 to 1-1 by the 24th minute. Good play by Colm Morris saw Ian Cantwell pointing in the 29th minute before Ballinacourty added a late point to lead 0-8 to 1-2 at half time.
The second half began with Ballinacourty pointing in the third minute and Lee Hayes replying in the sixth minute with an excellent point. However the game changed a minute later when a defensive slip
allowed Ballinacourty in for their first goal. They added a point immediately and in the 10th minute Ian Cantwell had what turned out to be our last score from a free after Conor O’Toole was fouled and we trailed 1-10 to 1-4. From there to the end it was the champions in control.
Scorers: Lee Hayes 1-2, Ian Cantwell (0-1 free)0-2.

County Minor Football Championship
De La Salle 5-8 Stradbally 2-13
Our minor footballers kept their qualification hopes alive when they had a four point victory over Stradbally in Cleaboy last Sunday morning. This was an entertaining and sporting game of football with quality scores from both sides and the result in doubt up to the end. A lot of the credit for that must go to the Stradbally goalkeeper who despite being beaten five times made six top class saves including a penalty. A big plus for our lads was the return of Jack McCarthy who scored two goals and had a hand in two others.
Playing against the wind we got a great start when James Coad and Jack McCarthy set up James Grogan for a cracking goal in the second minute and a minute later Jack McCarthy found the top corner with a superb half volley. Adam Doyle pointed in the sixth minute after good work by Jamie Roche and we found ourselves ahead 2-1 to 0-0. Any ideas that this might be easy were quickly dispelled as Stradbally took control of the game and kicked six excellent points between the seventh and nineteenth minutes. They took the lead with a goal in the 21st minute when Ciaran Brady saved the first attempt but was powerless to stop the rebound. They added two further points in the 24th and 26th minutes before Adam Doyle pointed a free to reduce the margin. A minute into injury time Jack McCarthy and Adam Doyle combined for David Hogan to rise highest and punch to the net to make it all square at the break 3-2 to 1-8.
The introduction of Eddie Meaney, who wasn’t fully fit, boosted our attack and we took the lead in the sixth minute when Adam Doyle pointed a free after he was fouled. A minute later a superb run from the back by Craig Dowling set up Jack McCarthy for his second excellent goal. Stradbally replied with two points before Eddie Meaney and Adam Doyle set up Jamie Roche for a fine point and we led 4-5 to 1-10 midway through the half. We then had a penalty saved and Stradbally pointed. Lee Wall then scored two points in a row, the first being turned over by the keeper, and we led by five with eight minutes left. Stradbally kept pressing and pointed in the 27th minute. Right at the end of normal time Eddie Meaney’s hard work gave Shane Ryan a chance to kick over a fine long distance point and we led 4-8 to 1-12.
We didn’t know then that we would be playing for a further eight minutes and Stradbally were right back in it when they goaled in the 34th minute. However a minute later the outstanding Shane Ryan set up David Hogan for a smashing goal. Stradbally kept fighting and ended the scoring with a point in the 38th minute.
Scorers: Jack McCarthy and David Hogan 2-0 each, Adam Doyle 0-4 (0-2 frees), James Grogan 1-0, Lee Wall 0-2, Jamie Roche 0-1.
Panel: Ciaran Brady, Conor Hogan, Shane Ryan, David Farrell, James Stone, Michael Roche, Craig Dowling, Evan Whelan, James Coad, James Grogan, Lee Wall, David Hogan, Jamie Roche, Jack McCarthy, Adam Doyle, Eddie Meaney, Jeff Cahill, Adam Hayes, Ryan Duke, Sean Power.
