    • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Championship

De La Salle 2-14 St. Mollerans 3-11

Our junior hurlers were held to a draw by St. Mollerans when they scored an injury time goal in another close hard fought game played in Gracedieu last Friday. This was a game in which we led for the most part but could never pull away and in the end St. Mollerans battling qualities snatched a draw for them.

The first quarter saw both sides point twice with ours coming from Kieran O’Donohoe and the outstanding Eamonn Fitzgerald. Four points from Eamonn Fitzgerald, Luke Lalor and Mikey Costigan (2), between the 16th and 23rd minutes put us in ahead but in the 24th minute St. Mollerans got in for their first goal. We replied with three points from Conor Dunphy and Mikey Costigan (2) between the 28th and 31st minutes to see us ahead 0-9 to 1-2 at the interval.

The second half began with Mikey Costigan and Luke Lalor pointing to stretch our lead but in the third minute a St. Mollerans free went all the way to the net. They added a point in the sixth minute but from the resultant puck out Luke Lalor made a superb catch to set up Eamonn Fitzgerald for our first goal. Back came St. Mollerans with three consecutive points before Conor Dunphy pointed to keep us ahead 1-12 to 2-6 midway through the half. An exchange of points with Conor Dunphy again involved was followed by two more St. Mollerans points to leave us ahead by the minimum 1-13 to 2-9 with ten minutes left. We looked to have weathered the storm when Eamonn Fitzgerald scored an excellent solo goal in the 22nd minute. An exchange of points involving Mikey Costigan made it 2-14 to 2-10 with five minutes left. St. Mollerans piled on the pressure and reduced the margin to three in the 28th minute. Then came that goal in injury time when we failed to clear a free and the ball ended up in our net apparently off the boot of one of our  own players and it was honours even for the night.

Scorers: Eamonn Fitzgerald 2-2, Mikey Costigan 0-6 (0-3 frees), Conor Dunphy 0-3, Luke Lalor 0-2, Kieran O’Donohoe 0-1.

Panel: Conor Bohane, Ryan Duke, Darragh Fitzpatrick (captain), Mark Joy-Kinsella, Tom Crotty, Christopher Sheehan, Darren Casey, Gavin Coppinger, Micheál Kavanagh, Kieran O’Donohoe, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Mikey Costigan, Philip Burke, Luke Lalor, Conor Dunphy, Niall O’Sullivan, Jack O’Donohoe, James Quinlan, Evan Deegan, Willie Power.
