- National Hurling League Semi Final
Well done to Derek McGrath, Mark Cooney, Kevin Moran, Jake Dillon, Eddie Barrett, Shane McNulty, Stephen Daniels, Fergal O’Brien and the Waterford senior hurlers on their excellent win over Tipperary last Sunday in Nowlan Park which qualified them for a National final for the first time since the 2008 All Ireland Final. From a club point of view it was great to see Eddie Barrett make a competitive return to the county jersey since his injury against Cork last May and to see Kevin Moran selected as the TG4 man of the match.
- County Senior Football Championship
Ballinacourty 4-14 De La Salle 0-2
Our senior footballers sponsored by John Kelly Opel were comprehensively beaten by Ballinacourty in this second round championship game played in Walsh Park last Saturday. Whereas there was nothing surprising about the result the margin of defeat was devastating for us given that it was twenty minutes into the game before our illustrious opponents took the lead at a time when we should have been further ahead. We trailed by seven at the interval and when we missed an early second half goal chance the floodgates opened and the final whistle eventually came as a relief.
Before the game we lost Martin Sheehan to a hand injury in the warm up and with Craig Dowling having injured his knee in Thursday night’s minor match it meant James Coad made his senior debut. We opened the scoring inside twenty eight seconds with a point from Colm Morris after a good delivery from Stephen Walsh. Ballinacourty equalised in the second minute but we were ahead again in the third minute when Colm Morris pointed after good play by Patrick Fitzgerald and Stephen Walsh. There followed fifteen scoreless minutes in which we spurned five excellent scoring chances before Ballincourty made it 0-2 each in the 18th minute.
They took the lead in the 20th minute with a point. They pointed again in the 25th minute and goaled two minutes later. They added two further points in injury time to lead 1-6 to 0-2 at the break. Four minutes into the second half Ian Cantwell made a great run forward and set up Conan Watt for a goal chance which was saved by the keeper who immediately started a counter attack which resulted in a point. By the tenth minute they had added 2-1 to make it 3-8 to 0-2. Injuries to Stephen Walsh and David Greene didn’t help as our resistance crumbled and Ballinacourty added 1-6 to their tally without reply in the final twenty minutes.
Scorers: Colm Morris 0-2.
Panel: David Dennison, James Coad, Thomas Kearney, Christopher Sheehan, David Kennedy, Colm Clancy (captain), Stephen Dalton, Stephen Walsh, Oran Keevers, Colm Morris, David Greene, Patrick Fitzgerald, Conan Watt, Lee Hayes, Ian Cantwell, Kenneth Byrne, Eddie Meaney, Patrick Flynn, Eamonn Dalton, James Grogan, David Whittle, Martin Sheehan, Craig Dowling.
- East Junior Football Championship
De La Salle 3-10 Naomh Pól 4-4
Our junior footballers got their third win of the campaign when we overcame a battling Naomh Pól side in Gracedieu last Friday. This was an entertaining game of football with the result in doubt up to the end as our opponents clawed back what was at one stage a nine point lead to just two before Adam O’Sullivan’s excellent point gave us some breathing space.
We opened the scoring in the third minute when Eamonn Fitzgerald goaled. Adam O’Sullivan added a point before Naomh Pól opened their account. Points followed from Eamonn Fitzgerald and Adam O’Sullivan before Naomh Pól pointed a free to make it 1-3 to 0-2 midway through the half. We added points from Eamonn Fitzgerald and James Grogan before Naomh Pól scored 1-2 within minutes to make it 1-5 to 1-4 at the break. A goal from Adam Doyle followed by a point from Adam O’Sullivan made it 2-6 to 1-4 at half time. A point from Adam O’Sullivan followed by a goal from Adam Doyle stretched the lead before Naomh Pól replied with a goal. Two points from Eamonn Fitzgerald were answered by two goals from Naomh Pól to make it 3-9 to 3-4 with eight minutes left. Another Naomh Pól goal made it a two point game before Adam O’Sullivan’s final point.
Scorers: Eamonn Fitzgerald 1-3, Adam Doyle 2-0, Adam O’Sullivan 0-5 (0-3 frees), James Grogan 0-2.
Panel: Eamonn Dalton, Ryan Duke, David Sutton, Conor Hogan, Peter O’Hagan, Alan Fitzgerald, Diarmuid Carey, James Grogan, Adam Doyle, Adam O’Sullivan, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Eoin Casey, Darren Casey, Barry Twomey, David Hogan, Keith Deasy, John Cummins.
