    • Eddie O’Donnell Monumental Works East U-21 Hurling Semi Final

De La Salle 2-13 Passage 1-16 (after extra time)

Our U-21 hurlers and Passage could not be separated after eighty minutes in Dunhill last Saturday. Credit to both sides for producing a very good game of hurling played in cold dry conditions and the general consensus was a draw was a fair result on the day. It was a game in which both sides had periods of dominance with Passage building an early lead before having to come from behind both in normal time and extra time to set up a replay next weekend. The replay was originally fixed for 2pm next Saturday in Carriganore but at the time of writing it looks like this will be changed to Sunday. As always check our social media sites during the week for confirmation.

Passage were on top at the start and had four points on the board before we opened our account from a Brian Cunningham free in the 11th minute after Eddie Meaney was fouled. Three further unanswered points from Passage had them ahead 0-7 to 0-1 after sixteen minutes. Two fouls on Evan Whelan in the 18th and 21st minutes saw Brian Cunningham narrow the gap and good work by Shane Ryan resulted in Mikey Costigan getting our first point from play in the 25th minute. Evan Whelan added another point in the 26th minute and Brian Cunningham added two frees after fouls on Shane Ryan and himself to level matters in the 30th minute. However, an injury time point gave Passage a half time lead 0-8 to 0-7. The first action of the second half saw Shaun O’Brien saving well in the fourth minute and we were ahead a minute later when Eddie Meaney’s shot for goal was saved by the goal keeper but Evan Whelan was on hand to finish the rebound to the net. Passage replied with two points to level matters by the 11th minute but four points in a row from three Brian Cunningham frees and one from Thomas Douglas had us ahead 1-11 to 0-10 with ten minutes left.  Back came Passage with a point in the 23rd minute and they equalised in the 29th minute with a goal to take the game to extra time.

Extra time began with Dylan Finn and Thomas Douglas combining for Luke Flynn to point but Passage replied immediately. We received a boost in the fifth minute when Dylan Finn dispossessed a defender and set up Thomas Douglas to crash the ball low to the net. Passage pointed on the stroke of half time to leave us ahead 2-12 to 1-13 at half time. Brian Cunningham stretched our lead with a pointed free in the second minute which was to prove our last score. Points in the sixth and ninth minutes for Passage reduced the arrears to the minimum and it was all square in injury time when Passage sent over a long range free.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-9 (frees), Evan Whelan and Thomas Douglas 1-1 each, Mikey Costigan and Luke Flynn 0-1 each.

Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Ryan Duke, Conor Giles-Doran, Adam Doyle, Lee Wall, Shane Ryan (captain), Gavin Coppinger, Brian Cunningham, Mikey Costigan, Thomas Douglas, Sam Flynn, Cormac McCann, Eddie Meaney, Evan Whelan, Dylan Finn, Luke Flynn, Sean Carton, James Stone, Ian Condon, Conor Dunphy, Sean Power, Jack O’Donohue, Jack McCarthy (injured) Jeff Cahill (injured).

    • County Junior B Hurling Final

Abbeyside 4-9 De La Salle 0-13

Commiserations to our junior B hurlers who found Abbeyside’s second string too strong in the county final played in Carrickbeg last Friday night. Three goals in four minutes early in the first half proved decisive and though credit to our lads who fought back to reduce the deficit to the minimum at one stage Abbeyside came back to regain control and emerged deserving winners.

Abbeyside opened the scoring with a point in the second minute. We equalised a minute later when Ian Condon pointed. We took the lead in the fourth minute with a free by Eamonn Fitzgerald after Jamie Sage was fouled but Abbeyside struck for their first goal in the seventh minute. A foul on Luke Lawlor saw Eamonn Fitzgerald score our third point a minute later but we were rocked when Abbeyside scored two goals in the 10th and 11th minutes to lead 3-1 to 0-3. Conor O’Toole pointed a free in the 14th minute after Lee Hayes was fouled but Abbeyside replied likewise a minute later. A foul on Christopher Sheehan saw Conor O’Toole point in the 19th minute but again Abbeyside replied in the 21st minute to make it 3-3 to 0-5. Eamonn Fitzgerald pointed three frees between the 25th and 28th minutes after fouls on Lee Hayes, Christopher Sheehan and a technical foul to reduce the arrears and when Eamonnn Fitzgerald himself was fouled Conor O’Toole converted from distance to leave us behind 3-3 to 0-9 at the break. We began the second half with Conor O’Toole again pointing from distance after another foul on Christopher Sheehan in the third minute and when Eamonn Fitzgerald pointed in the seventh minute after Luke Lawlor was fouled the margin was now down to one point.

However, that was as good as it got as four Abbeyside frees between the eight and fifteenth minutes gave them a 3-7 to 0-11 advantage. They added a point from play in the 18th minute and when they got their fourth goal a minute later that was that. Eamonn Fitzgerald pointed in the 22nd minute when his shot for goal carried over the bar and he got our final score two minutes later after Ciaran Corrigan was fouled. Abbeyside ended the scoring with their final point in the 26th minute.

We extend our thanks to player manager Alan Fitzgerald and his backroom team of Shane Barry, Lee Casey, Leon Mullally and Johann Carey on first aid for their efforts throughout the year. We congratulate Abbeyside on their fine win.

Scorers: Eamonn Fitzgerald 0-8 (0-7 frees), Conor O’Toole 0-4 (frees), Ian Condon 0-1.

Panel: Conor Bohane (captain), Tom Crotty, David Sutton, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Eoin Treacy, Alan Fitzgerald, Conor O’Toole, Conor Dunphy, Ian Condon, Christopher Sheehan, Lee Hayes, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Jamie Sage, Luke Lawlor, Sean Power, Mark Joy-Kinsella Tom Wiltshire, Ciaran Corrigan, Barry Twomey, Thomas Kenny, Kieran O’Donohue, Jack O’Donohue, Ronan O’Connor, Niall Walsh, Philip Burke, Niall O’Sullivan (injured), Jeff Cahill (injured).

    • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Final

De La Salle 2-9 Mount Sion 1-11

Congratulations to our junior B hurlers who are Eastern champions after an exciting win over Mount Sion in Carrickbeg last Saturday night. Great credit is due to both sides who for the second year in a row served up a closely contested final and from our point of view it was great to reverse the result and for this team to get their hands on a trophy after several years trying.

We faced the wind in the first half and Mount Sion opened the scoring with a point in the second minute. We equalised a minute later with a free by Eamonn Fitzgerald after Jamie Sage was fouled. We got a boost in the fourth minute when Luke Lawlor caught Conor Dunphy’s delivery and crashed the ball to the net. Christopher Sheehan followed with a point in the eight minute after good work by Lee Hayes but Mount Sion replied with two points to make it 1-2 to 0-3 after twelve minutes. Jamie Sage pointed a minute later before a period of Mount Sion dominance saw them hit five unanswered points to lead 0-8 to 1-3 after twenty one minutes. We were back in front in the 27th minute when Eamonnn Fitzgerald goaled after good approach play by Lee Hayes and Jamie Sage. Mount Sion equalised in the 29th minute but we were back in front on the stroke of half time when a foul on Christopher Sheehan saw Eamonn Fitzgerald point to leave us ahead 2-4 to 0-9 at the break.

Amazingly there was no score for the first fourteen minutes of the second half but we did see a superb penalty save by Conor Bohane in the ninth minute. After Mount Sion equalised from a free Lee Hayes put us back in front in the 16th minute. However, we were rocked in the 18th minute when another Mount Sion free got lost in the lights and ended up in the net to leave us trailing 1-10 to 2-5. We responded well and Jamie Sage pointed immediately. Conor O’Toole equalised in the 22nd minute from a long range free after he was fouled himself and we were back in front two minutes later when Eamonn Fitzgerald pointed after a foul on Ian Condon. Back came Mount Sion to equalise in the 25th minute. Then as we entered the first of three additional minutes Ian Condon, now operating in the half back line, proved to be the match winning hero when he sent over an excellent point from out the field. Mount Sion tried hard to get an equaliser but our backs led by David Sutton stood strong and held out to the final whistle.

After the game there was much delight as Conor O’Toole was presented with the man of the match trophy and team captain Conor Bohane received the cup from board treasurer and championship sponsor John Murphy.

The lads now play Abbeyside’s second team in the county final next Friday night at 8pm also in Carrickbeg.

Scorers: Eamonn Fitzgerald 1-3 (0-3 frees), Luke Lawlor 1-0, Jamie Sage 0-2, Christopher Sheehan, Lee Hayes, Conor O’Toole (free) and Ian Condon 0-1 each.

Panel: Conor Bohane (captain), Tom Crotty, David Sutton, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Eoin Treacy, Alan Fitzgerald, Mark Joy-Kinsella, Conor Dunphy, Conor O’Toole, Ian Condon, Lee Hayes, Christopher Sheehan, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Jamie Sage, Luke Lawlor, Sean Power, Tom Wiltshire, Ciaran Corrigan, Barry Twomey, Thomas Kenny, Kieran O’Donohue, Jack O’Donohue, Ronan O’Connor, Niall Walsh, Philip Burke, Niall O’Sullivan (injured), Jeff Cahill (injured).

Ballygunner 2-18 De La Salle 0-16

Commiserations to our senior hurlers who suffered a disappointing defeat to Ballygunner in the county final in Walsh Park last Sunday. This was a game in which we never reached the required level of performance. The loss of Ian Flynn added to the long term loss of Stephen Daniels certainly affected us defensively and Ballygunner emerged deserving winners on the day.

We extend our thanks to the players and the management of Owen Dunphy, Alan ‘Jack’ Duggan, Bryan Phelan, Peter Hearne Donal Treacy plus their backroom and medical teams for the effort they put in during the year to get us back to a county final. • County Senior Hurling Semi Final

De La Salle 1-13 Passage 3-6

An injury time point by Jack Fagan saw our senior hurlers qualify for our first county final in five years when we defeated a gallant Passage side in Walsh Park last Sunday. This was a game played in tough conditions and great credit to both sides for producing a contest that went down to the wire. We recovered from a poor start, in which we lost Ian Flynn to injury and also saw Kevin Moran restricted by a knock, to be level at half time before opening up a second half four point lead. However, back came Passage to equalise from a penalty before Jack Fagan’s late score.

Passage opened the scoring in the first minute but Shane Ryan equalised immediately. Passage restored their lead in the fourth minute and goaled two minutes later as we lost Ian Flynn. Jake Dillon pointed in the 10th minute and two injury stoppages involving Kevin Moran resulted in no further score until the 19th minute when Jake pointed again. John Mullane pointed in the 21st minute but a defensive error saw Passage goal in the 25th minute despite the best efforts of Shaun O’Brien who saved the initial shot but was helpless with the rebound. John Mullane pointed in the 26th minute but Passage replied immediately to make it 2-3 to 0-5. Tom Moran pointed from distance in the 28th minute but again Passage replied. A great run through the middle by Kevin Moran ended with him finding the net and an injury time point by John Mullane saw us go in the half time level at 1-7 to 2-4. Kevin Moran, now operating at full forward put us ahead on the restart with Passage equalising in the seventh minute. Kevin Moran restored our lead a minute later and two Shane Ryan frees after fouls on Eoin Madigan and Eddie Barrett in the 13th and 20th minutes followed by another Kevin Moran point had us ahead 1-12 to 2-5 with nine minutes left. Passage pointed in the 24th minute and got a lifeline in the 30th minute when they were awarded a penalty which was expertly dispatched to the net. With extra time looming in the growing darkness up stepped Jack Fagan to be the hero with a 32nd minute point. Passage had one last chance to save the game but we cleared the danger and the full time whistle sounded.

Scorers: Kevin Moran 1-3, Shane Ryan (0-2 frees) and John Mullane 0-3 each, Jake Dillon 0-2, Tom Moran and Jack Fagan 0-1 each.

Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Stephen Dalton, Ian Flynn, Michael Doherty, Shane McNulty, Kevin Moran, Tom Moran, Eddie Barrett (captain), Paidi Nevin, Adam Farrell, Jake Dillon, Jack Fagan, John Mullane, Eoin Madigan, Shane Ryan, Kenneth Byrne, Eddie Meaney, David Greene, Cormac McCann, Thomas Douglas, Dean Twomey, Paddy Kennedy, Thomas Kearney, Dylan Foley, Stevie Brenner, Brian Cunningham, Mikey Costigan, Evan Whelan, Gavin Coppinger, Lee Wall, Ryan Duke, Matthew Barden, Donal Carey, Stephen Daniels, Eoin Casey, Kyle Sinnott.
