Whilst in defence Connor O Sullivan, Glen Hoolahan, Finn Murphy, Sean McBride, Rian Byrne, Simon Kryszkowski, Dennis Uloha and Cade Shanahan were rock solid. It was in our final attack which saw a great pass from Jamie to Brian Cunningham who struck over a great point to seal the win. Well done lads.

    • Annual General Meeting

The AGM took place last Friday in Gracedieu as we looked back on 2018 and planned for next year.

It was a year in which the highlight was the retention of the Liam O’Donnell memorial cup for the Eastern U-21 A hurling championship.

At under-age it was a reasonable year in which we won county titles in U-16 B and U-13 A hurling. Our U-14 footballers also took part in Peil na nOg in County Meath.

In his address as Chairman Seamus Quirke spoke about the need to get more people actively involved in the club at various levels and the continuing need to remain financially viable. He thanked the various management teams for their efforts this year and he complimented all the players and mentors who had represented Waterford at various levels. He thanked Alan Duke and John Sheehan, who were stepping down as Vice Chairman and P.R.O., for their efforts and he also paid special tribute to Eamonn Fitzgerald, who is retiring shortly, for his work in St. Declan’s school.

The secretary and treasurer’s reports were discussed and they were complimented on a job well done.

The following officers were re-elected, President Br. Killian, Chairman: Seamus Quirke, Vice-Chairman Thomas Kearney, Secretary: Eoin Casey, Assistant Secretary: Ellen Doyle, Treasurer: Tom O’Leary, P.R.O: TBC, Field Committee: Billy O’Neill, Players Representative: Ian Flynn, County Board Delegate: Seamus Quirke, East Board Delegate: Billy O‘Neill, Juvenile Chairman: Paudie Brosnan, Camogie Club Chairman: Joey Carton, Children’s Welfare Officer: Brendan Lawton, Insurance Officer: Leanne Sheehan, Health and Wellbeing Officer: Lorraine Duke, Irish Officer: Megan Duke, Social Committee Chairman: TBC.

    • Condolences

Last week we lost another great clubman when Richie Power passed away. Richie was a long standing servant of the club as a player, selector and was also a trustee. Richie had playing success at U-16 and minor level with the club and he had the distinction of marking Christy Ring one time in a tournament game. He was a selector on our county intermediate hurling championship winning side in 1990 and our senior hurling Sargent cup winning team in 1991. He was a committee member for many years and he also served as an Eastern board delegate to the county board. Many club members, old and young, formed a guard of honour at his removal and funeral.

The death also occurred last week of Kathleen Lalor mother of our current junior hurler Luke Lalor, former player Donnie Lalor and grandmother to our U-13 county medallist Daniel Lalor.

We extend our deepest sympathy to both the Power and Lalor families on their loss. Ar dheis Dé go raibh said.

    1. County U-21 Hurling Final

Abbeyside 3-13 De La Salle 1-12

Our quest for four U-21 hurling county titles came to an end last Saturday when we were beaten by an excellent Abbeyside team in Fraher Field in a sporting contest throughout. Abbeyside were the better team throughout on a day in which little went right for us though with even a small bit of luck we might have got closer on the scoreboard but credit to our lads for fighting to the end.

Congratulations to Abbeyside on their victory and finally lifting the Tony Mansfield cup named after one of their own.

We say thanks and well done to our own panel of players and team mentors of Bryan Phelan, Ian Flynn, Stevie Brenner, Barry Murphy and Martin Doyle with Joe Kenny and Micko Casey who were on first aid duty for all their efforts. It is worth remembering, as the  U-21 championship comes to an end, that this management group in six years led us to four county titles and five eastern titles. Best wishes also to Lorcan Dwyer and Eddie Meaney who picked up injuries during the game.

Abbeyside opened the scoring in the first minute and the excellent Thomas Douglas replied from a free after he was fouled himself. He added one from play in the fifth minute but Abbeyside equalised immediately. Evan Whelan regained the lead for us with appoint but Abbeyside goaled in the eight minute to take a lead they would never lose. They added a point before Thomas Douglas converted a free after a foul on Sam Flynn to make it 1-3 to 0-4 after fourteen minutes. Abbeyside were denied a second goal when Shaun O’Brien saved brilliantly but they then hit 1-2 without reply by the 19th minute. A foul on Eddie Meaney saw Thomas Douglas point but again Abbeyside replied. Mikey Costigan sent over a point from distance in the 24th minute. Abbeyside pointed again in the 25th minute before a foul on Cormac McCann resulted inThomas Douglas pointing and we trailed 2-7 to 0-7 at the break.

Abbeyside began the second half with a point inside twenty seconds and Thomas Douglas pointed a free in the third minute after Cormac McCann was fouled. Another Thomas Douglas free in the sixth minute reduced the arrears to five points but the game was then won by Abbeyside when they scored two points and followed with their third goal in the 12th minute to lead 3-10 to 0-9. Badly needing a goal at this stage, we thought we had it when Dylan Finn found the net but as he was in the act of striking the referee’s whistle sounded. The referee then appeared to first award the goal but after consulting his umpires awarded a penalty and yellow carded the goalkeeper who produced a brilliant save from the resultant strike. Mikey Costigan pointed a sixty five but Abbeyside replied again. Thomas Douglas pointed from play in the 23rdminute but Abbeyside replied immediately. Mikey Costigan hit another long range point in the 26th minute and Abbeyside got their last score in the 32nd minute. Thomas Douglas was desperately unlucky to see his shot for goal come back off the inside of the upright in the 33rd minute but we finally found the net in the 35th minute when Evan Whelan goaled.

    Scorers: Thomas Douglas 0-8 (0-6 frees), Evan Whelan 1-1, Mikey Costigan 0-3 (0-1 ‘65).

Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Lorcan Dwyer, Conor Giles-Doran, Darren Kenneally, Ryan Duke Gavin Coppinger, Lee Wall, Mikey Costigan, Sean Carton, Sam Flynn, Thomas Douglas, Evan Whelan, Eddie Meaney (captain), Michael Roche, Cormac McCann, Dylan Finn, Luke Flynn, James Stone, Jack Hannon, Aidan Gannon, Sean Power, Tom Crotty, Jeff Cahill, Seaghan Walsh.

    • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Final

Kilmacthomas 2-13 De La Salle 2-10

Commiserations to our junior hurlers who were beaten by Kilmacthomas in Carriganore last Saturday in this year’s final. This was a very well contested and entertaining game where, unfortunately from our point of view, we probably didn’t do enough when wind assisted in the first half and Kilmacthomas emerged deserving winners.

We opened with a point from Stephen Jacob in the first minute. Kilmacthomas replied with two points and Eamonn Fitzgerald then equalised. A brilliant goal from Stephen Jacob after good work by Luke Lalor had us ahead 1-2 to 0-2 with only five minutes played. A minute later Kilmacthomas goaled and they took the lead with a point in the 13th minute and Aidan Gannon equalised in the 17t hminute after a foul on Eamonn Fitzgerald. Kilmacthomas struck a blow in the 21st minute when they got in for a second goal but our reply was strong with a point from James Stone and three from Aidan Gannon after fouls on Lee Hayes and Eamonn Fitzgerald with one from a sixty five also. Kilmacthomas equalised in the 31st minute but we went ahead two minutes later when a long range free from Conor Bohane went all the way to the net. The last score of the half went to Kilmacthomas with a point in the 35th minute to leave us ahead 2-7 to 2-5 at the break.

Kilmacthomas pointed two minutes into the second half and Lee Hayes replied three minutes later. Two further Kilmacthomas points had it level at 2-8 each by the 11th minute. A foul on Stephen Jacob saw Aidan Gannon put us ahead in the 12th minute but again Kilmacthomas equalised two minutes later. Kilmacthomas took the lead in the 22nd minute and Conor O’Toole equalised from a long range free in the 24th minute with what proved to be our last score. Kilmacthomas then hit three points to secure the title.

We congratulate Kilmacthomas on their victory and wish them well in the county final.

We thank our players for their effort and commitment through the year. Thanks also to our managemet team of Alan Fitzgerald, Shane Barry, Lee Casey, Luke Lalor with Micko Casey and Joe Kenny on first aid for their work with this team.

Scorers: Aidan Gannon 0-5 (0-4 frees, 0-1 ‘65) Stephen Jacob 1-1, Conor Bohane 1-0 (free), Eamonn Fitzgerald, James Stone, Lee Hayes and Conor O’Toole (free) 0-1 each.

Panel: Conor Bohane, Colm Maher, Conor O’Toole, Tom Crotty, Conor Dunphy, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Thomas Kenny, Dan Casey, Alan Fitzgerald, Lee Hayes, Stephen Jacob, James Stone, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Luke Lalor, Aidan Gannon, Christopher Sheehan, Sean Connolly, Sean Power, David Sutton, Philip Burke, Jack O’Donohoe, Niall Walsh, James Cotter, Ciaran Corrigan, Adam O’Sullivan.

    • Eddie O’Donnell Monumental Works East U-21 Hurling Semi Final

De La Salle 4-6 Clonea 1-14

Our U-21 hurlers began the defence of the Liam O’Donnell Memorial cup with a hard fought and somewhat fortunate victory over Clonea in Walsh Park last Sunday. We played second fiddle for the most of this game and it was only in the last ten minutes or so that we got on top. In truth the game could have been over at half time only for a superb hat trick from team captain Eddie Meaney. We also didn’t help ourselves with four different players missing seven scorable frees during the game. However, credit to our lads for digging deep to produce the win.

Clonea had four points on the board before Thomas Douglas opened our account from a free in the ninth minute after Sam Flynn was fouled. They added three more before Sam Flynn found Eddie Meaney in the 13th minute and he rounded his marker and crashed the sliotar to the net. Sean Carton won the resultant puck out and gave to Cormac McCann who pointed, We then found herself ahead in the 15th minute when Eddie Meaney goaled again to make it 2-2 to 0-7. Clonea took over again and hit five consecutive points before Cormac McCann’s precision pass picked out Eddie Meaney for a cracking goal on the stroke of half time and we trailed 0-12 to 3-2 at the break. The second half was more even but a fifth minute point for Clonea was the only score of the first eighteen minutes. The switch of Thomas Douglas to full forward proved vital as he got on the end of Eddie Meaney’s delivery in the 19th minute to hit a ground stroke to the net and he added two points in the 21st and 25th minutes to make it a three point game. Clonea reduced the arrears in the 27th minute but Thomas Douglas replied two minutes later. A foul on Eddie Meaney saw Aidan Gannon give us a four point lead in the first minute of injury time. Clonea kept trying for a goal and it took some excellent defensive work by Conor Giles Doran to keep them out. They got that goal in the 34th minute when they were awarded a free and it somehow found its way into the bottom corner of the net. Fortunately, the final whistle sounded on the puck out.

The final against either Ballygunner or Mount Sion is expected to take place next Saturday.

Scorers: Eddie Meaney 3-0, Thomas Douglas 1-4 (0-1 free), Cormac McCann and Aidan Gannon (free) 0-1 each.

Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Lorcan Dwyer, Conor Giles-Doran, Darren Kenneally, Ryan Duke Gavin Coppinger, Evan Whelan, Mikey Costigan, Sean Carton, Sam Flynn, Thomas Douglas, Luke Flynn, Eddie Meaney(captain), Michael Roche, Cormac McCann, Dylan Finn, Aidan Gannon, James Stone,  Seaghan Walsh, Jack Hannon, Sean Power, Tom Crotty, Jeff Cahill.

    • I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here

The long awaited major fundraiser for the year based on the TV show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here finally took place in the Tower Hotel last Saturday night and it did not disappoint. The event which was jointly sponsored by Hooper Dolan Insurances and Tile and Style played out in front of a packed attendance who were hugely entertained by what turned out to be a fabulous event.

Twenty four contestants as follows Rose Madigan, John Mullane, Owen Dunphy, Majella Dunphy, Evan Whelan, Jake Dillon, David Sutton, Jade O’Reilly, Kevin Moran, Donal Carey, Thomas Kearney, Ryan Duke, Dejana Obradovic, David Greene, Eddie Mulligan, Vanessa Casey, Barry Murphy, Ciara Twomey, Shane Quinlan, Mark Cooney, Danielle Flynn, Shane McNulty, Dean Twomey, Bryan Phelan all participated in a series of gruelling tasks before the number of contestants was eventually whittled down to Rose Madigan, Thomas Kearney and Barry Murphy and after a final eliminator Thomas and Barry went through to the final.

Just before the final began news came from the City West Hotel that Beth Carton, who had originally planned to be a contestant, had been selected on the camogie All Star team of 2018 and the announcement was greeted with loud cheering. After the final the ‘butcher boy’ Thomas Kearney emerged as the King of the Jungle. We compliment all the contestants on their efforts in fundraising prior to the night and on their participation on the night. We appreciate the work put in by all twenty four of you.

We thank all the organising committee of Ian Flynn, Ellen Doyle, Matthew Barden, Ricky Grogan, Tommy Ryan, Peter Hearne, Paddy Kennedy and Eoin Casey on running a fantastic show. We would like to thank all our sponsors mentioned in the programme and to Empower Events for running the show. Thanks also to the Tower Hotel for hosting a never to be forgotten night.

    • County Hurling Final U-16 Division 2

De La Salle 1-8 Tramore 0-8

Our U-16 hurlers were crowned county champions after their victory in the division 2 final against a determined Tramore side in a cold and windy Kill GAA grounds on Saturday morning. In what were extremely difficult conditions for hurling we prevailed on a scoreline of 1-08 to 0-08. Our lads showed lots of resilience to come from behind and hold out for a determined victory.

We started slowly playing against an extremely strong wind and trailed by 4 points to 1 at half time with Cormac Dawson pointing our only score from a free after the doubled marked Reuben Halloran was fouled. With the wind such a factor, huge credit goes to our players who fought hard to keep Tramore without a goal in the first half led by goalkeeper Darragh Treacy. In such conditions a goal was going to have a huge bearing on the result.

We started the second half very brightly and got that all important goal inside the first two minutes. Full forward Reuben Halloran beat his two markers before passing to the oncoming Alex Keane who slotted to the net. Cormac Dawson put us ahead a minute later for the first time with a pointed free after Jack Twomey was fouled.

It was a lead we wouldn’t relinquish for the remainder of the game. Reuban Halloran followed up with two pointed frees before Tramore struck back with two points of their own. With pressure mounting on our defence and scores hard to come Cormac Dawson scored two huge points from frees inside our own half to stretch our lead back to three. David Ryan followed up with a point from play before Tramore pointed a free to leave just a goal between the teams with five minutes left.

Credit goes to Tramore who fought determinedly against the wind to try get an equalizing goal but our defence held out led by full back Aaron Wymberry.

There was great scenes at the final whistle and when the trophy was presented to team captain Reuben Halloran.

A huge congratulations to our lads who have worked extremely hard all year having also reached the football county final earlier this season and got just rewards for their efforts.

A big thanks to our mentors, players parents and juvenile chairman Paudie Brosnan for their contribution throughout the year.
