Sargent Cup Senior Hurling League
De La Salle 1-14 Cappoquin 1-12
We travelled to Cappoquin last Saturday for a Sargent Cup outing and we came home with the points after a hard fought game in which, even though the rain stayed away for the game the heavy pitch made life difficult for both sets of players throughout. This was a game where we built up an early lead and maintained it until the last ten minutes when a late rally by the home side made us relieved the hear the final whistle.
Despite Bryan Phelan and Paddy Kennedy failing late fitness tests we began very well and Shane Ryan pointed three times from play in the first six minutes. Cappoquin opened their account in the eight minute and Shane Ryan replied in the 12th minute. A minute later Stephen Dalton and Paudie Nevin combined for Shane Ryan to goal before three points in a row for our opponents made it 1-4 to 0-4 after nineteen minutes. Brian Cunningham pointed in the 20th minute but a minute late a poor clearance led to a goal for Cappoquin. We dominated the rest of the half and points from Brian Cunningham, two long range frees from Eoin Madigan, after fouls on Paudie Nevin and Tom Moran, and a free from Shane Ryan when John Mullane was fouled put us 1-9 to 1-4 ahead at half time. The second half began with John Mullane and Brian Cunningham pointing inside forty seconds but three Cappoquin points made it 1-11 to 1-7 after ten minutes. A foul on John Mullane saw Shane Ryan point the free but Cappoquin replied again before John Mullane got the score of the game in a move involving Eoin Madigan, Tom Moran and Thomas Kearney to make it 1-13 to 1-8 with ten minutes to go. Back came Cappoquin with three points between the 22nd and 25th minutes to make it a two point game. Another foul on John Mullane saw Shane Ryan stretch the lead to three points before Cappoquin ended the scoring in the 28th minute with a point as we held on to claim the points
