County U-16 Hurling Final
Mount Sion 1-13 De La Salle 0-13
There was huge disappointment for our U-16 hurlers last Saturday when they were beaten in the county final by Mount Sion in Walsh Park. This was a thoroughly deserved win for Mount Sion on the day in what was overall a decent game. We had a chance to to force extra time right at the death but it was not to be. These young lads have now felt the pain of losing the U-16 hurling and football finals this year and suffered the same fate two years ago at U-14 level. Hopefully there will be better luck in store for them as they enter the minor grade.
Mount Sion opened the scoring in the second minute from a free but Sean Power equalised a minute later. Mount Sion pointed another free in the fourth minute but we equalised immediately again when Thomas Douglas pointed. Mount Sion regained the lead in the seventh minute from a well struck sideline cut but Thomas Douglas levelled matter again a minute later. Two more frees in the 13th and 16th minutes put Mount Sion two ahead but we replied in the 21st and 23rd minutes with points from Dylan Finn and Luke Flynn to make it 0-5 each. Having missed a few frees ourselves Kevin Hennessy now took over and pointed two in the 24th and 25th minutes after fouls on Sean Power and Sean Carton. The game’s decisive score came a minute later when Mount Sion scored what proved to be the only goal in the game. They added another point from a free in the 30th minute to lead 1-6 to 0-7 at the interval. We began the second half well with Kevin Hennessy pointing a free in the second minute after Thomas Douglas was fouled. A minute later the Mount Sion keeper made a fine save and when the resultant sixty five dropped short Thomas Douglas won possession and equalised. Another foul on Thomas Douglas as he headed goalwards in the fourth minute saw Kevin Hennessy put us back in front but Mount Sion equalised from a free in the 10th minute. They should have been ahead in the 11th minute but Donal Carey produced probably one of the best saves ever seen at the venue. A superb run and point by Luke Flynn in the 13th minute put us ahead but again it was shortlived as Mount Sion pointed a free in the 14th minute. Good play by Conor Giles-Doran resulted in Kevin Hennessy pointing in the 15th minute to put us 0-12 to 1-8 ahead. Mount Sion equalised in the 18th minute from a sixty five and were back in front a minute later from a free. They added another point before Donal Carey kept us in the game with a superb double save. Mount Sion stretched their lead to three with a 22nd minute free and Kevin Henenssy got what turned out to be our last score in the 25th minute from a sixty five. Mount Sion restored their three point cushion from a sixty five in the 29th minute. We had one last chance when Thomas Douglas was fouled but his free was saved and the final whistle sounded.
Congratulations to Mount Sion on their excellent victory and commiserations to our own lads. Thanks also to the team mentors Willie Power, Jack Duggan, Paudie Brosnan, Pat Twomey, Johnny Walsh, Donal Treacy and Johann Carey on first aid.
Scorers: Kevin Hennessy 0-6 (0-4 frees, 0-1 ’65), Thomas Douglas 0-3, Luke Flynn 0-2, Sean Power and Dylan Finn 0-1 each.
