    1. County Senior Football Relegation Play Off

St. Saviours 2-17 De La Salle 1-9

A poor second half performance saw our senior footballers sponsored by John Kelly Opel well beaten in this relegation play off last Sunday in Walsh Park. We now go back to intermediate status after two years at the top grade. The game was even enough through the first half until St. Saviours got in for a goal in the 23rd minute which gave them the confidence to dominate the second half.

We opened the scoring in the first minute with a point from Eddie Barrett but St. Saviours then scored four in a row between the third and ninth minutes. Two frees from Ian Cantwell after fouls on himself and Lee Hayes in the 11th and 13th minutes narrowed the gap. Points frrom play from Craig Dowling and Ian Cantwell in the 14th and 16th minutes put us back in front 0-5 to 0-4. St. Saviours then scored two points in the 18th and 22nd minutes to regain the lead and took control a minute later with a goal. Stephen Walsh pointed for us in the 24th minute but St. Saviours replied in the 26th minute to lead 1-7 to 0-6 at the interval. St. Saviours came out and added two points in the first two minutes. Ian Cantwell pointed a free in the 4th minute after Conan Watt was fouled but St. Saviours added two further points to lead 1-11 to 0-7 after seven minutes. We had a chance of a goal a minute later but the St. Savours keeper made a fine stop from Kenneth Byrne and they added points in the 10th and 11th minutes. Ian Cantwell pointed a free in the 12th minute after Stephen Daniels was fouled but St. Saviours scored four in a row between the 14th and 20th minutes to lead 1-17 to 0-8. They got their second goal in the 22nd minute when their corner forward, though it mattered little, got away with a fairly obvious foul and raced through unchallenged to score. We goaled ourselves a minute later when David Kennedy set up Ian Cantwell to find the roof of the net. We attacked constantly at this stage but were forced to go for goals without success and we ended the scoring in injury time when Ian Cantwell pointed a free.

Congratulations to St. Saviours on their deserved win and thanks to our mentors John Cummins, Jim Keevers, David Whittle, Ricky Grogan and Joe Kenny on first aid for their efforts during the year.

    • County U-16 Hurling Semi Final

De La Salle 4-14 Ballygunner 1-6

An excellent second half performance, in which Thomas Douglas scored a hat trick in six minutes, saw our U-16 hurlers qualify for the county final with a comfortable victory over Ballygunner last Sunday morning in Gracedieu. After a tight first half in which our shooting let us down we took control in the second half after Ian Condon’s goal and were deserving winners.

We opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Thomas Douglas pointed a long range free after Eoghan Treacy was fouled. Ballygunner equalised in the 11th minute but points from Luke Flynn, Sean Power, Thomas Douglas (free), Luke Walsh and Kevin Hennessy between the 13th and 24th minutes had us ahead 0-6 to 0-1. Ballygunner pointed two frees in the 26th and 28th minutes before the excellent Luke Flynn pointed in the 30th minute to see us ahead 0-7 to 0-3 at the break. Ballygunner pointed in the third minute but we replied with another long range free from Thomas Douglas after Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan was fouled in the fifth minute. We took control in the eight minute when Ian Condon got on the end of Luke Flynn’s delivery and first timed the ball to the net. Ballygunner pointed in the ninth minute but a minute later Thomas Douglas won possession from Luke Walsh’s delivery and buried the ball in the net. Aidan Gannon and Thomas Douglas (free) added points before Thomas Douglas hit two goals in the 14th and 16th minutes to leave us ahead 4-10 to 0-5. Thomas Douglas added an excellent point in the 18th minute but Ballygunner replied two minutes later. Kevin Hennessy scored the best point of the game straight from Donal Carey’s puck out and Aidan Gannon added another in the 26th minute after Sam Flynn was fouled. Ballygunner goaled from a free in the 28th minute but a minute later Aidan Gannon ended the scoring from a free after he was fouled himself.
