Minus three starters from the win over Fourmilewater, Shane McNulty, Conor Giles Doran and Dean Twomey plus Eddie Barrett and Ian Flynn who were introduced, we started poorly and at once stage trailed by seven points. We were fortunate to be only four in arrears at the break but gained control in the second half and got the vital scores when it mattered. Credit to both sets of players for producing a close contest in conditions not conducive to hurling.

Tallow opened with three early points before we opened our account in the ninth minute with a Shane Ryan free after Eoin Madigan was fouled. Tallow added another two points before striking for the only goal of the game in the 15th minute to lead 1-5 to 0-1. Two Shane Ryan frees in the 18th and 24th minutes after fouls on Eddie Meaney and Paddy Kennedy followed by our first score from play in the 30th minute from Cormac McCann saw us trail 1-5 to 0-4 at the interval. We began the second half playing much better and two frees from Shane Ryan after fouls on Eddie Meaney and Eoin Madigan either side of an Adam Farrell point saw the lead down to the minimum after ten minutes.

The next score came in the 17th minute and it was Tallow’s first in half an hour but two further frees from Shane Ryan saw it level 0-9 to 1-6 with ten minutes left. We took the lead for the first time in the 22nd minute with a point from Cormac McCann after good work by Eddie Meaney but Tallow equalised immediately. An excellent Eoin Madigan point put us back in front in the 24th minute and

Cormac McCann added another a minute later. Tallow reduced the margin to the minimum in the 26th minute but two minutes later Kevin Moran sent over a superb strike from the sideline. Tallow tried for a late score but the final word went to substitute Thomas Douglas who sent over in the 33rd minute to secure the win.

Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-7 (frees), Cormac McCann 0-3, Adam Farrell, Eoin Madigan, Kevin Moran and Thomas Douglas 0-1 each.

Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Stephen Dalton, Kenneth Byrne, Paddy Kennedy, Mikey Costigan, Jake Dillon (captain), Tom Moran, Shane Ryan, Paidi Nevin, Adam Farrell, Kevin Moran, Jack Fagan, Cormac McCann, Eddie Meaney, Eoin Madigan, Thomas Douglas, Donal Carey, Brian Cunningham, Gavin Coppinger, Lee Wall, Adam Doyle, Evan Whelan, Luke Flynn, Matthew Barden, Ryan Duke, Sean Carton, Thomas Kearney, Conor Giles Doran, Shane McNulty, Dean Twomey, Ian Flynn, Eddie Barrett, Michael Doherty.

Juvenile news

U-16 Football

Our U-16 footballers had a good win away to Stradbally during the week. We extend our sincere sympathy to Margaret his wife, daughters Sharon, Andrea, Deirdre and Eimear, his son John, his grandchildren, Sean, Daire and Conor play for our juvenile teams, and his brothers Jerry and Albert. Eamon served practically all of his teaching career in St. Declan’s Primary School. He was appointed principal in 1994 when Br. Finbarr FSC retired. Eamon’s dedication and leadership qualities were second to none. He worked tirelessly to maintain the La Sallian ethos of St. Declan’s and the school went from strength to strength during his time as principal. He was a firm believer in the important part that sport had to play in the growth and development of young people. All sports and Gaelic Games in particular prospered under his stewardship. His contribution to the wider community and De La Salle GAA Club was enormous and for this we in De La Salle GAA will be forever grateful.

Suaimhneas síoraí go raibh aige.

Condolences

We also extend our sympathy to the Brenner family on the death of Charlotte’s mother Mary Matthews at the weekend.
