Trailing 0-12 to 0-3 at this point we rallied to make it 0-14 to 0-8 at the interval. We reduced the deficit to four points eight minutes into the second half but poor shooting and the concession of a goal in the thirteenth minute saw Passage emerge worthy winners. On a night when the long period of inactivity seemed to have affected us, one of the few positives was the senior debut of minor player Mikey Costigan and he acquitted himself well.

Passage made a great start and pointed four times in the first six minutes. Jack Fagan opened our account in the seventh minute but Passage replied with three in a row. John Mullane scored our second in the 13th minute but Passage again hit three in a row to lead 0-10 to 0-2 after seventeen minutes. Brian Cunningham pointed a free after a foul on Eddie Meaney in the 18th minute but Passage added a further two points to lead by nine. A double exchange of points involving Brian Cunningham and Bryan Phelan frees saw the nine point gap remain after thirty minutes. Points from Jack Fagan, Eddie Meaney and Shane Ryan in injury time made it 0-14 to 0-8 at half time. We dominated the first ten minutes of the second half but poor shooting saw us only add two points through a Bryan Phelan sixty five and Eddie Meaney. Passage pointed and then followed with a goal in the 12th minute. Two points from Shane Ryan, one after a foul on John Mullane, made the score 1-15 to 0-12 midway through the half. Passage added two more points in the 19th and 20th minutes. Bryan Phelan converted a sixty five in the 24th minute and a foul on Shane Ryan in the 30th minute saw Eoin Madigan convert the penalty to reduce the margin to four points. Passage added a point in injury time and Bryan Phelan ended the scoring from another sixty five.

Scorers: Bryan Phelan 0-4 (0-3 ’65s, 0-1 free), Shane Ryan 0-3 (0-1 free), Eoin Madigan 1-0 (penalty), Jack Fagan, Brian Cunningham (frees) and Eddie Meaney 0-2 each, John Mullane 0-1.

Panel: John Coady, Tom Moran, Shane McNulty, Paddy Kennedy, Bryan Phelan, Eoin Madigan, Kevin Moran, Eddie Barrett, Jake Dillon, Adam Farrell, Conan Watt, Jack Fagan, Brian Cunningham, John Mullane, Eddie Meaney, Shane Ryan, Mikey Costigan, Ian Flynn, David Greene, Stephen Dalton, Steven Daniels, Stevie Brenner, Thomas Kearney, Stephen Jacob, Lee Wall, Colm Morris, , Kenneth Byrne, Robert Daniels, Matthew Barden, Gavin Coppinger, Kyle Sinnott, Oran Keevers.

County Minor Hurling Championship

De La Salle 2-16 Clonea 2-12

Our minor hurlers maintained their unbeaten run with a hard fought victory over Clonea in Clonea last Monday in a well contested and highly entertaining game. The sides were level with time almost up when Cormac McCann struck for the winning goal. An injury time point made the game safe.

Clonea opened the scoring after two minutes but we replied with three frees from Mikey Costigan. Conor Giles-Doran got our first point from play in the seventh minute. Clonea pointed in the ninth minute and Mikey Costigan got his first from play in the 12th minute. An exchange of frees involving Mikey Costigan was followed by two Clonea points to see us ahead 0-6 to 0-5 after eighteen minutes. Points from Mikey Costigan and Cormac McCann stretched our lead but Clonea replied with one in the 20th minute. A foul on Cormac McCann saw Mikey Costigan convert the free in the 22nd minute. Back came Clonea with two points before Luke Flynn got the last point of the half in the 29th minute and we led 0-10 to 0-8 at the interval. Clonea opened the second half scoring but Sean Power replied immediately. Mikey costigan pointed a free in the eight minute after Chris Kong was fouled. Clonea added points in the 10th and 13th minutes. Mikey Costigan pointed again to make it 0-13 to 0-11 midway through the half. It took a brilliant save by Donal Carey minute later to keep us in the lead before Clonea narrowed the gap to the minimum in the 18th minute. We goaled a minute later when good work by Ryan Duke, Sean Carton and Luke Flynn set up Mikey Costigan and he crashed the ball to the net. Mikey added a point in the 20th minute to make it 1-14 to 0-12. However, Clonea were back in the game with a goal a minute later. Conor Giles-Doran hit over a fine point in the 24th minute to make it a three point game. Clonea were level in the 26th minute when after another brilliant piece of goalkeeping by Donal Carey our defence failed to react properly and the ball was finished to the net. Clonea were unable to convert a chance from a sixty five to go ahead and in the 30th minute Adam Hayes found Cormac McCann who finished low to the net. Two minutes into injury time James Stone added the insurance point.

Scorers: Mikey Costigan 1-10 (0-6 frees), Cormac McCann 1-1, Conor Giles-Doran 0-2, Luke Flynn, Sean Power and James Stone 0-1 each.

Panel: Donal Carey, Ryan Duke, Lee Wall, Ian Condon, Sean Carton, Gavin Coppinger, Luke Walsh, Conor Giles-Doran, Conor Dunphy, Sean Power, Chris Kong, James Stone, Luke Flynn, Mikey Costigan, Cormac McCann, Dylan Finn, Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan, Kevin Hennessy, Adam Hayes, Shaun O’Brien, Kieran O’Donohoe, Jack O’Donohue, Tom Crotty, James Quinlan, Peter Grogan.

Waterford Development Squads

Last Saturday was a busy day for the county development squads and we say well done to our lads who were selected on these squads.
