This was a game that was very much there for the winning but an abject display of shooting ensured that we contrived to leave the much needed points behind us. We had built up an eight point lead in the first quarter but then conceded 1-9 without reply to trail by four at half time. We trailed by six with twenty minutes to go but even though we dominated possession for the last period our wide count, which was registered as 29 in total, ensured we did not breach the gap. Two late goal chances which struck the crossbar and the goalkeeper respectively probably best summed up our dismal night.

With Bryan Phelan, Jack Kennedy and Stephen Dalton unavailable through injury, we began well with two points from Jake Dillon frees in the first three minutes. Ballyduff Upper opened their account a minute later but points from Adam Farrell, John Keane and Jake Dillon had us ahead 0-5 to 0-1 after ten minutes. Ballyduff Upper pointed in the 11th minute but further points from Eddie Meaney and John Mullane made it 0-7 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter. We goaled in the 16th minute when Paudie Nevin beat the goalkeeper to John Mullane’s delivery and planted the ball in the empty net. Ballyduff Upper then started winning some possession and our discipline failed us as we conceded five points from frees and one from play to lead 1-7 to 0-8 after twenty five minutes. Ballyduff Upper then goaled before hitting three further points in injury time to put them ahead 1-11 to 1-7 at half time.

Ballyduff Upper began the second half with two points before Paudie Nevin opened our account in the 10th minute. Three Jake Dillon frees between the 13th and 17th minutes made it 1-13 to 1-11 but Ballyduff Upper pointed a minute later. Another Jake Dillon free and a point from Jamie Sage reduced the margin to the minimum in the 23rd minute. Ballyduff Upper stretched it to two in the 25th minute and in the 29th minute Jake Dillon’s shot for goal hit the top of the crossbar and went over. Finding inspiration from the let off our opponents added two points in the 30th and 32nd minutes to go three clear. We had one last chance when from the puckout Eoin Madigan got possession but his shot hit the goalkeepers’ leg and went just outside the post for a sixty five. Our short sixty five eventually came to Shane McNulty whose attempt cleared the crossbar and the game was over.

Scorers: Jake Dillon 0-8 (0-6 frees), Paudie Nevin 1-1, Adam Farrell, John Keane, John Mullane, Eddie Meaney, Jamie Sage and Shane McNulty 0-1 each.

Panel: Stevie Brenner, Tom Moran, Ian Flynn, Stephen Daniels, David Greene, Kevin Moran, Shane McNulty, Eddie Barrett, Jake Dillon, Paudie Nevin (captain), John Keane, Adam Farrell, Eoin Madigan, John Mullane, Eddie Meaney, Jamie Sage, John Coady, Jack McCarthy, Brian Cunningham, Thomas Kearney, Kenneth Byrne, Adam O’Sullivan, Shane Ryan, Michael Roche, Colm Morris, Bryan Phelan, Jack Kennedy, Stephen Dalton, Conan Watt.

Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs East Intermediate Hurling Quarter Final

Portlaw 2-17 De La Salle 1-11

At the end of a bad seven days our intermediate hurlers exited the championship when they were beaten by a superior Portlaw side in Walsh Park last Sunday. Portlaw led this game from the start and our young side never got going at any stage with the result never in doubt after the first quarter.

Portlaw opened the scoring with two early points. Shane Ryan was on target for us in the seventh minute. Portlaw added three points before a foul on Thomas Kearney saw Brian Cunningham score our second. Portlaw replied immediately but points from Thomas Kearney and Stephen Jacob saw us trail 0-6 to 0-4 after fifteen minutes. Portlaw then took over and scored 1-3 in nine minutes. Brian Cunningham pointed a free in the 27th minute but Portlaw added two more before Brian ended the first half scoring with another free to make it 1-11 to 0-6.

The first thirteen minutes of the second half saw both teams add three points to their tally with ours coming from Colm Morris, Michael Roche and Brian Cunningham. Another point from Brian Cunningham and one from Shane Ryan made it 1-14 to 0-11 with twelve minutes to go. However, that was as good as it got and Portlaw pointed twice in the 21st and 22nd minutes before being gifted a goal in the 24th minute. Two minutes into injury time Michael Roche goaled for us from a free and there was still time for Portlaw to add a last point.

We would like to thank Alan Kelly in his first year as manager and his selectors Darren Casey and Philip Burke along with their backroom team for the effort they put in this year.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-5 (frees), Michael Roche 1-1 (1-0 free), Shane Ryan 0-2, Thomas Kearney, Stephen Jacob and Colm Morris 0-1 each.

Panel: Kyle Sinnott, Martin Sheehan, Kenneth Byrne, Adam Doyle, Lee Wall, Jack McCarthy, Craig Dowling, Patrick Flynn, Matthew Barden, Dylan Foley, Thomas Kearney, Colm Morris, Brian Cunningham, Stephen Jacob, Shane Ryan, Michael Roche, Lee Hayes, James Stone, Evan Whelan, Barry Twomey, Conan Watt, Robert Daniels, Donal Barron, Conor Bohane, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Jeff Cahill, Ryan Duke, Gavin Coppinger, Cormac McCann, Conor Dunphy.

Waterford Development Squads

Last Saturday was a busy day for the county development squads and even though it was a disappointing day overall we say well done to our lads who were selected on these squads. Despite a reasonable start by our lads the game as a contest was over when Clashmore goaled twice in the 16th and 17th minutes. It was clear throughout this game that whereas we have several players capable of playing at senior level we do not appear to have either the fitness levels required or the teamwork to survive as a unit against the serious senior teams.

Still without players like Oran Keevers, Ian Cantwell and Paddy Kennedy with Stephen Dalton and Mitchell Casey returning off the bench which in Stephen’s case saw him unable to finish we started reasonably well and points from Conan Watt and Colm Morris saw us trail 0-3 to 0-2 after eleven minutes. Clashmore added points in the 12th and 15th minutes and followed with two goals in the 16th and 17th minutes. We then deployed a sweeper and restricted them to a solitary point over the next twelve minutes but then conceded four points between the 29th and 31st minutes to trail 2-10 to 0-2 at the break.

The pattern continued in the second half with Clashmore adding four further points between the 2nd and 6th minutes. We got a boost in the 8th minute when David Kennedy and Lee Hayes combined for Kenneth Byrne to goal. However this was cancelled out three minutes later when Clashmore capitalised on an error to get their third goal. They added three points between the 12th and 18th minutes before Colm Morris and David Kennedy replied for us in the 23rd and 24th minutes. Clashmore ended the scoring with a point in the 28th minute.

Scorers: Kenneth Byrne 1-0, Colm Morris 0-2, Conan Watt and David Kennedy 0-1 each.

Panel: David Dennison, Martin Sheehan, Colm Clancy (captain), Craig Dowling, David Kennedy, Kenneth Byrne, Christopher Sheehan, Thomas Kearney, David Greene, Stephen Walsh, Lee Hayes, Colm Morris, Conan Watt, Patrick Flynn, Donal Barron, Stephen Dalton, Mitchell Casey, James Grogan, Michael Roche, Eamonn Dalton.

Camogie Notes

Club Training

U-8, 10 squads on Weds 2nd Sept @ 6.30pm in Gracedieu.

Junior, U-18 & U-16 squads on Thurs 3rd Sept @ 7pm in Gracedieu.

U-13 tbc after Tues match.

Fixtures:

U-13 League Round 2 @ home v Lismore on Tues 1st Sept throw in 7.15pm in Gracedieu.

We have quailfied for the U-16 A championship semi finals & U-18 A County Final, dates-times-venues tbc.

Results:

Our U-13 girls opened there League campaign with a loss away v Butlerstown/Ferrybank on Tues 25th Aug in an entertaining game.

Panel: Charlotte, Sharna, Ava, Saoirse, Lily, Sophie, Sarah H, Holly, Ella, Clare, Ellen, Aoife, Cathlin, Layla, Frances.

County:

Well done to our club girls Taylor Healy (capt), Colette Hogan, Katie Ryan, Niamh Murphy (1-2), Aisling Madigan (0-1), Chloe Dempsey and their teammates on the U-16 county squad who played Dublin in the All Ireland U-16B Championship Final in Nenagh on Sunday.
