We got off to the best possible start as Cormac McCann found the net early on. Gavin Coppinger added a further goal only minutes later as we established a healthy lead. A young St. Carthages team battled hard and got a goal of their own mid way through the first half. Further points from Cormac McCann, Evan Whelan, Eddie Meaney and Mikey Cositgan left us in the lead at half time, 2-6 to 1-4. After an early exchange of points St. Carthages brought the score back to two points with a well taken goal. A magnificent save by Donal Carey was needed to keep our lead intact going into the final quarter. Mikey Costigan struck a vital goal on 54 minutes to put daylight between the teams at the end. A great team performance and an important victory in what’s sure to be a very competitive championship.

Panel: Donal Carey, Tom Crotty, Lee Wall, Peter Grogan, Craig Dowling, Michael Roche, Chris Kong, Conor Dunphy, Evan Whelan, James Stone, Eddie Meaney, Gavin Coppinger, Cormac McCann, Thomas Douglas, Michael Costigan, David Hogan, Conor Hogan, Adam Hayes, Jack Laffan, Shaun O’Brien, Luke Walsh, Luke Flynn, Conor Giles-Doran, Jeff Cahill.

Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs East Intermediate Hurling Championship

De La Salle 1-15 Erins Own 0-16
Our intermediate hurlers made sure that qualification for the knockout stages would remain in their own hands with a very good win over a previously unbeaten Erins Own side in Walsh Park last Saturday. We had a number of players back who had missed the last game and it led to a much improved overall performance on the day. Also back was Shane Ryan returning after an eight month study absence and his contribution of 1-3 from play was to prove decisive.

Playing with the wind in the first half we began well and led 0-5 to 0-0 after ten minutes through a Brian Cunningham free after a foul on Stephen Jacob, Matthew Barden and Shane Ryan who hit three in a row. Erins Own finally opened their account before Brian Cunningham added a point from play. Erins Own pointed twice either side of a Brian Cunningham free for a foul on Robert Daniels to make it 0-7 to 0-3 after twenty minutes. Another foul on Stephen Jacob saw Brian Cunningham convert and further points came from Stephen Jacob and Dylan Foley, who had replaced the injured Robert Daniels, before Erins Own pointed in injury time to leave us ahead 0-10 to 0-4 at the interval.
Erins Own began the second half with two quick points with Brian Cunningham replying in the third minute after Matthew Barden was fouled. Erins Own’s comeback gathered momentum and they scored four points in a row to reduce our lead to the minimum. The game’s decisive score came in the 12th minute when Shane Ryan goaled after a great run by Dylan Foley.

We now led 1-11 to 0-10 but back came Erins Own with two points as we lost Lee Hayes to injury. Brian Cunningham stretched the lead to three points from another free but Erins Own came again with two more points to make 1-12 to 0-14 with nine minutes left. Two frees by Brian Cunningham after fouls on himself and Dylan Foley cancelled out two Erins Own points with twenty seven minutes gone and the final score came when Colm Morris sent over a fine point in the 29th minute to secure the win.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-8 (0-7 frees) Shane Ryan 1-3, Matthew Barden, Stephen Jacob, Dylan Foley, and Colm Morris 0-1 each.

Panel: Kyle Sinnott, Martin Sheehan, Kenneth Byrne, Adam Doyle, Lee Wall, Jack McCarthy, Craig Dowling, Colm Morris, Matthew Barden, Robert Daniels, Thomas Kearney, Lee Hayes, Brian Cunningham, Stephen Jacob, Shane Ryan, Dylan Foley, Patrick Flynn, Donal Barron, Barry Twomey, Evan Whelan, Conor Bohane, Ryan Duke, Gavin Coppinger, Mikey Costigan, Conor Dunphy, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Cormac McCann.

John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Championship

De La Salle 1-11 Portlaw 0-11
Our junior hurlers got another win when three injury time points saw us overcome Portlaw in a close hard fought game in Gracedieu last Friday. This was an entertaining and sporting match throughout and having led by two points at half time we were pegged back to equality three times in the last ten minutes before our late scoring burst proved decisive but Portlaw will probably feel they were somewhat unlucky not to share the spoils in the end.

Portlaw led for the only time when they pointed twice in the first three minutes. Three points from Mikey Costigan (free), Conor Dunphy and Christopher Sheehan between the 7th and 14th minutes put us in front but Portlaw equalised at the midway point. An exchange of points involving a Mikey Costigan free had it still level after nineteen minutes. We were back in front again in the 20th minute when after good play by Mikey Costigan and Christopher Sheehan, Micheál Kavanagh goaled to make it 1-4 to 0-4. Portlaw replied with a point in the 24th minute to see us ahead 1-4 to 0-5 at the interval.

The second half was tight and it was the 10th minute before the first score came which was a Portlaw point. Mikey Costigan replied with a pointed free in the 11th minute and Portlaw pointed again a minute later. Christopher Sheehan pointed in the 14th minute as we led 1-6 to 0-7 midway through the half. Back came Portlaw with points in the 19th and 21st minutes to make it all square. Eamonn Fitzgerald put us ahead again in the 22nd minute only for Portlaw to equalise immediately. Mikey Costigan pointed in the 27th minute but a minute later Portlaw pointed a ’65 and it was level 1-8 to 0-11. We went back in front in the first minute of injury time when Christopher Sheehan pointed and from the puck out Mikey Costigan made it a two point game. Portlaw attempted to mount one last attack but the ball was cleared to Conor Dunphy who drove the ball over the bar to secure the win.

Scorers: Mikey Costigan 0-5 (0-3 frees), Christopher Sheehan 0-3, Micheál Kavanagh 1-0, Conor Dunphy 0-2, Eamonn Fitzgerald 0-1.

Panel: Conor Bohane, Ryan Duke, David Sutton, Mark Joy-Kinsella, Tom Crotty, Darragh Fitzpatrick (captain), Barry Murphy, Gavin Coppinger, Christopher Sheehan, Micheál Kavanagh, Mikey Costigan, Kieran O’Donohoe, Conor Dunphy, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Niall O’Sullivan, Darren Casey, Willie Power, Adam Hayes, Jack O’Donohoe.

City League U-12 Hurling

De La Salle 4-1 Glenmore 2-4.
Our U-12s played Glenmore in Glenmore last Friday night.
