There was much relief in our camp when the final whistle sounded as we badly needed the points but also because Ballygunner came so close to snatching it in the end. It was a game in which we built up an eight point lead in the first half while wind assisted and in the second half we had to withstand a Ballygunner response which got stronger in the final quarter.
Lining out without the injured Shane McNulty and Stephen Dalton, we began well with points from Jake Dillon and a superb effort from Kevin Moran in the first three minutes. A further effort from Jake Dillon in between two Ballygunner points saw us lead 0-3 to 0-2 after ten minutes. We were then awarded a penalty in the 14th minute after the very effective Paudie Nevin was fouled but Jake Dillon’s effort went over the bar. We were now in control of the game and added five further points in a row by the 26th minute from Bryan Phelan, Adam Farrell, John Mullane and Jake Dillon (2). Ballygunner replied with their third point but we hit two more from Adam Farrell and Jake Dillon to see us ahead 0-11 to 0-3 at half time.
We began the second half with a Jake Dillon free but Ballygunner scored two points in reply. In the fifth minute Paudie Nevin’s shot for goal was somehow deflected over the bar by the Ballygunner keeper for what was an incredible save. Ballygunner then scored three points in a row before John Mullane got the score of the game from out by the sideline in the 15th minute to make it 0-14 to 0-8.
Ballygunner pointed again in the 16th and 19th minutes before a Jake Dillon point made it 0-15 to 0-10 with ten minutes left. Further points in the 26th and 27th minutes left only three in it but an excellent score from Adam Farrell made it a four point game with two minutes left. Ballygunner then goaled in the 29th minute to leave the minimum between the sides but Jake Dillon stretched it to two as we entered injury time. Ballygunner had one last chance of a goal but we managed to avert the danger and the win was secured.
Scorers: Jake Dillon 0-9 (0-8 frees, 0-1 penalty), Adam Farrell 0-3, John Mullane 0-2, Kevin Moran, Bryan Phelan (free) and Paudie Nevin 0-1 each.
Panel: Stevie Brenner, Tom Moran, Ian Flynn, Stephen Daniels, Bryan

Phelan, Kevin Moran, Eoin Madigan, Jake Dillon, Eddie Barrett, Adam Farrell, John Keane, Jack Kennedy, David Greene, Paudie Nevin, John Mullane, Eddie Meaney, John Coady, Jamie Sage, Thomas Kearney, Brian Cunningham, Kenneth Byrne, Robert Daniels, Michael Roche, Lee Hayes, Matthew Barden, Conan Watt, Stephen Jacob.

East Junior Football Championship

De La Salle 3-9 Kill 1-12
Our junior footballers had their fourth win of the campaign and ensured qualification for the knockout stages with a hard fough victory over Kill in Gracedieu last Friday. This was an enjoyable game of football between two evenly matched sides and it would be probably fair to say that our ability to get goals allied to Kill having a key player sent off midway through the second half were the deciding factors on the night.
Playing against the wind we made a great start with the excellent Joey Twomey pointing and Craig Connolly goaling inside two minutes. Kill opened their account with two points before Joey Twomey pointed again in the 11th minute. Kill pointed a minute later before points from Barry Twomey and David Farrell made it 1-4 to 0-3 midway through the half. Kill then scored four points in four minutes to level matters. Joey Twomey pointed a free after a foul on Adam Deegan in the 20th minute and Eamonn Fitzgerald added another a minute later. Kill took the lead in the 23rd minute when they goaled. This proved to be the last score of the half so we trailed 1-7 to 1-6 at the break.
Kill began the second half with a point inside the first minute but we were back in front after Eamonn Fitzgerald and Barry Twomey set up Joey Twomey for a fine goal. Kill responded and added two points in the eight and ninth minutes to regain the lead. However, it was shortlived as we came straight up the field and Eamonn Fitzgerald scored our third goal. Craig Connolly pointed in the 14th minute and we led 3-7 to 1-10. It was around this time that Kill were reduced to fourteen players and points from Joey Twomey and David Farrell stretched our lead to five with eleven minutes left. Credit to Kill, they kept battling and added two points to their tally in the 24th and 31st minutes before the final whistle sounded.
Scorers: Joey Twomey 1-4 (0-1 free), Craig Connolly and Eamonn Fitzgerald 1-1 each, David Farrell 0-2, Barry Twomey 0-1.
Panel: Eamonn Dalton, Ryan Duke, Adam Doyle, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Peter O’Hagan, David Breen, Micheál Kavanagh, James Grogan, Adam Deegan, Joey Twomey, Eamonn Fitzgerald, David Farrell, Craig Connolly, Barry Twomey, Ben O’Dwyer, Darren Casey, Willie Walsh, Conor Bohane.

City League U-12 Hurling

De La Salle 5-9 Passage 2-2
Our U-12 hurlers played their fifth game of the City League recently v Passage in Gracedieu.
