This was a game between two understrength sides with from our point of view the most significant event was to see Stephen Daniels start and finish a club game for the first time since the 2012 Munster Final against Thurles Sarsfields. Hopefully we will now see Stephen getting back to the outstanding hurler he was then.

The game itself saw Ballygunner, playing against the wind, make the early running and a 12th minute goal helped them to a 1-5 to 0-4 lead midway through the half. Our lads improved and a succession of points followed by a 31st minute goal from Paudie Nevin, after a foul on Eoin Madigan saw John Keane’s free saved, put us 1-9 to 1-7 ahead at half time. Aided by the wind Ballygunner had forged ahead 1-15 to 1-13 with ten minutes to go and maintained that gap to the end.

Scorers: Adam Farrell 0-7 (0-5 frees), Paudie Nevin 1-0, Eddie Barrett and Stephen Daniels 0-2 each, Jamie Sage, John Keane, Ian Flynn (free), David Greene and Thomas Kearney 0-1 each.

Panel: John Coady, Stephen Dalton, Jack McCarthy, Adam O’Sullivan, Tom Moran, Ian Flynn, David Greene, Eddie Barrett, Stephen Daniels, Adam Farrell, Thomas Kearney, Paudie Nevin, John Keane, Eoin Madigan, Jamie Sage, Bryan Phelan, Dylan Foley, Stevie Brenner, Matthew Barden, Martin Sheehan, Patrick Flynn, Robert Daniels, Evan Whelan,

East Junior Football Championship

Ferrybank 2-4 De La Salle 0-7

Our junior footballers were most unlucky to lose to Ferrybank in Gracedieu last Sunday morning in a game that was ruined by the gale force wind.

We had the gale in the first half and led 0-6 to 0-0 at the interval but were unfortunate to lose Patrick Flynn to a head injury before half time. Our lads battled hard throughout the second half and midway through Barry Twomey’s point helped us to lead 0-7 to 0-2. Ferrybank then got a goal and as we entered injury time we still led by the minimum. Ferrybank equalised in the 31st minute and we then launched an attack that saw Micheál Kavanagh’s shot hit the crossbar. Ferrybank then attacked and won a ’45 in the 33rd minute which dropped short but was deflected to the net to give them both points. Credit to both sides for the efforts in this game

Scorers: Barry Twomey 0-2, Patrick Flynn, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Stephen Jacob, Donal Barron and Darren Casey 0-1 each.

Panel: Eamonn Dalton, Eoin Casey, Alan Fitzgerald, Peter O’Hagan, Diarmuid Carey, Craig Dowling, James Grogan, Stephen Jacob, Donal Barron, Micheál Kavanagh, Patrick Flynn, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Darren Casey, Barry Twomey, Matthew Barden, Patrick Fitzgerald.

County U-16 Football Championship

Ballinacourty 2-10 De La Salle 2-6

e played our third round of the championship on Sunday last in windswept Gracedieu hoping to maintain our unbeaten start against Ballinacourty. Without the injured Kevin Hennessy and Ciaran Corrigan from our last game we got off to a poor start conceding a goal from our visitor’s first attack. We clawed ourselves back into the game with points by Eoghan Rea, Lorcan Dwyer and Peter Grogan and were happy to be level at half time after losing Eoghan McGrath Butler and Ian Condon to injuries during that opening period.

Our injury problems continued with Alex Kennedy having to retire at half time but Eoghan Rea gave us a good boost scoring an early point after a great run from his own half. This game was now in the melting pot and It was end to end stuff with both teams showing great skill and effort in difficult playing conditions but we again received another injury blow with the loss of Dylon Finn who was having a fine game. At the midway point both teams had opportunities to goal but it was our visitors who took the advantage with a well worked three pointer followed by a couple of kicked points which meant the game was now beginning to drift away from us heading into the final period.

To be fair to the lads they never gave up and when Donal Carey and Sean Connolly combined to save a certain goal we soon followed this up with Ian Condon finding the back of our visitors net after resuming corner forward. Seán Power added to our score late in the game with a deserved goal of his own meaning this contest went down to the wire but Ballincourty held out and were deserved winners. Well done to the lads for a great effort and equally well done to all substitutes introduced. We wish the injured players a speedy recovery and hopefully it doesn’t impact too much on the enjoyment of their Easter holidays.

Thank you to Margaret Treacy for looking after our jersey’s following our last match and to Lilly O’Keeffe for helping out this week.

Our next game is scheduled for Tuesday 7th April away to Dungarvan.

St. Mollerans Senior Hurling Tournament

Templederry Kenyons 4-11 De La Salle 1-11

This game was played in torrential rain and a strong wind in Carrickbeg. We played against the wind in the first half and conceded three goals to trail 3-4 to 0-4 at half time. We conceded a fourth goal at the start of the second half but we battled back to trail 4-6 to 1-9 after twelve minutes aided by a storming performance from Shane McNulty and a goal from John Keane. However our opponents regained the initiave to finish comfortable winners on a night when both teams deserve huge plaudits given the weather conditions.

Scorers: John Keane 1-1, Shane McNulty 0-3 (0-1 free), Adam Farrell (0-1 free) and Ian Flynn (0-1 free) 0-2 each, Brian Cunningham, Eddie Barrett and Stephen Jacob 0-1 each.

Panel: John Coady, Stephen Dalton, Jack McCarthy, Adam O’Sullivan, Oran Keevers, Ian Flynn, Shane McNulty, Eddie Barrett, Matthew Barden, Paudie Nevin, Thomas Kearney, John Keane, Brian Cunningham, Adam Farrell, Dylan Foley, Tom Moran, Stephen Jacob, Michael Roche, Martin Sheehan, Adam Doyle, Kyle Sinnott.

East U-13 Football

De la Salle 7-11 Portlaw 5-4

Our U-13 footballers had a good win over an understrength Portlaw side last Saturday.

Team: Aaron Wynberry, Daire O’Keeffe, Daire Treacy, Evan Hayes, Conor Walsh, Josh Kelly, Rueben O’Halloran, Dylan Stickle, Jay Hearne, Nathan Finn, Alex Brown, Sean Treacy, Owen Oseni.

National Hurling League

Well done to Derek McGrath, Mark Cooney, Kevin Moran, Jake Dillon, Shane McNulty, Eddie Barrett, Stephen Daniels and the Waterford senior hurlers on their excellent win over Galway last Sunday in Walsh Park.

National Football League

Hard luck to Oran Keevers and the Waterford senior footballers who were denied victory through a late goal in London last Sunday.

Lotto

There was no winner of our Lotto jackpot and it now stands at €5,000.
