    • County Senior Hurling Final

Ballygunner 2-18 De La Salle 0-16

Commiserations to our senior hurlers who suffered a disappointing defeat to Ballygunner in the county final in Walsh Park last Sunday. This was a game in which we never reached the required level of performance. The loss of Ian Flynn added to the long term loss of Stephen Daniels certainly affected us defensively and Ballygunner emerged deserving winners on the day.

We extend our thanks to the players and the management of Owen Dunphy, Alan ‘Jack’ Duggan, Bryan Phelan, Peter Hearne Donal Treacy plus their backroom and medical teams for the effort they put in during the year to get us back to a county final. We congratulate Ballygunner on their achievement and wish them well in the Munster club.

Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-8 (frees), Jack Fagan 0-3 (0-1 sideline), Paidi Nevin, John Mullane, Kevin Moran, Adam Farrell and Thomas Douglas (free) 0-1 each.

There was no winner of our Lotto jackpot last Tuesday night and it now stands at €2,750. The next draw takes place on Tuesday 31st October. Numbers drawn were 7, 9, 24, 26.

    • County Senior Hurling Semi Final

De La Salle 1-13 Passage 3-6

An injury time point by Jack Fagan saw our senior hurlers qualify for our first county final in five years when we defeated a gallant Passage side in Walsh Park last Sunday. This was a game played in tough conditions and great credit to both sides for producing a contest that went down to the wire. We recovered from a poor start, in which we lost Ian Flynn to injury and also saw Kevin Moran restricted by a knock, to be level at half time before opening up a second half four point lead. However, back came Passage to equalise from a penalty before Jack Fagan’s late score.

Passage opened the scoring in the first minute but Shane Ryan equalised immediately. Passage restored their lead in the fourth minute and goaled two minutes later as we lost Ian Flynn. Jake Dillon pointed in the 10th minute and two injury stoppages involving Kevin Moran resulted in no further score until the 19th minute when Jake pointed again. John Mullane pointed in the 21st minute but a defensive error saw Passage goal in the 25th minute despite the best efforts of Shaun O’Brien who saved the initial shot but was helpless with the rebound. John Mullane pointed in the 26th minute but Passage replied immediately to make it 2-3 to 0-5. Tom Moran pointed from distance in the 28th minute but again Passage replied. A great run through the middle by Kevin Moran ended with him finding the net and an injury time point by John Mullane saw us go in the half time level at 1-7 to 2-4. Kevin Moran, now operating at full forward put us ahead on the restart with Passage equalising in the seventh minute. Kevin Moran restored our lead a minute later and two Shane Ryan frees after fouls on Eoin Madigan and Eddie Barrett in the 13th and 20th minutes followed by another Kevin Moran point had us ahead 1-12 to 2-5 with nine minutes left. Passage pointed in the 24th minute and got a lifeline in the 30th minute when they were awarded a penalty which was expertly dispatched to the net. With extra time looming in the growing darkness up stepped Jack Fagan to be the hero with a 32nd minute point. Passage had one last chance to save the game but we cleared the danger and the full time whistle sounded.

Scorers: Kevin Moran 1-3, Shane Ryan (0-2 frees) and John Mullane 0-3 each, Jake Dillon 0-2, Tom Moran and Jack Fagan 0-1 each.

Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Stephen Dalton, Ian Flynn, Michael Doherty, Shane McNulty, Kevin Moran, Tom Moran, Eddie Barrett (captain), Paidi Nevin, Adam Farrell, Jake Dillon, Jack Fagan, John Mullane, Eoin Madigan, Shane Ryan, Kenneth Byrne, Eddie Meaney, David Greene, Cormac McCann, Thomas Douglas, Dean Twomey, Paddy Kennedy, Thomas Kearney, Dylan Foley, Stevie Brenner, Brian Cunningham, Mikey Costigan, Evan Whelan, Gavin Coppinger, Lee Wall, Ryan Duke, Matthew Barden, Donal Carey, Stephen Daniels, Eoin Casey, Kyle Sinnott.

    • County Senior Hurling Quarter Final

De La Salle 1-19 Fourmilewater 0-15

Our senior hurlers qualified for our first county semi final in three years when they defeated a battling Fourmilewater side in Fraher Field last Sunday. This was a game in which we played very well in the first half building up an eight point lead that could have been more but ensured that we were never under real threat in the second half even though Fourmilewater came much more into the game. This was, by all accounts, a much improved display on last week but further improvement will be needed especially in our shooting if we are to challenge last year’s beaten finalists Passage in next week’s semi final. This game also marked the senior debut of minor player Thomas Douglas.

Fourmilewater opened the scoring in the second minute. Two free from Shane Ryan after fouls on himself and Eddie Barrett and an excellent point from Kevin Moran after good play by Jake Dillon had us ahead 0-3 to 0-1 after six minutes. Both sides traded four points each over the next eight minutes with ours coming from John Mullane, Eoin Madigan, Shane Ryan and the excellent Shane McNulty. Right at the midway point a fine pass from Adam Farrell set up Shane Ryan who made no mistake in finishing to the net to make it 1-7 to 0-5. Fourmilewater pointed in the 22nd minute but we then hit four in a row from Kevin Moran, Jake Dillon, John Mullane and Paidi Nevin to leave it 1-11 to 0-6 after twenty seven minutes. Both sides exchanged two late points with ours coming from Shane Ryan after fouls on Jack Fagan and Jake Dillon to see us lead 1-13 to 0-8 at the break. Fourmilewater opened the second half scoring but Jack Fagan replied immediately. Fourmilewater pointed again in the third minute but again Jack Fagan replied. Two Fourmilewater points in the sixth and ninth minutes were replied to by Shane Ryan frees after fouls on Jake Dillon and Eddie Meaney to make 1-17 to 0-12 after twelve minutes. Fourmilewater again hit back with two points in the 14th and 18th minutes before Eddie Barrett pointed in the 19th minute. In a quiet last ten minutes Fourmilewater pointed in the 25th minute and Shane Ryan ended the scoring in the 28th minute

Scorers: Shane Ryan 1-8 (0-8 frees), Kevin Moran, John Mullane and Jack Fagan 0-2 each, Eoin Madigan, Shane McNulty, Jake Dillon, Paidi Nevin and Eddie Barrett 0-1 each.

Panel: Shaun O’Brien, Stephen Dalton, Ian Flynn, Michael Doherty, Shane McNulty, Kevin Moran, Tom Moran, Eddie Barrett (captain), Paidi Nevin, Adam Farrell, Jake Dillon, Jack Fagan, John Mullane, Shane Ryan, Eoin Madigan, Eddie Meaney, Cormac McCann, David Greene, Thomas Douglas, Dean Twomey, Paddy Kennedy, Kenneth Byrne, Thomas Kearney, Stevie Brenner, Brian Cunningham, Mikey Costigan, Evan Whelan, Gavin Coppinger, Lee Wall, Matthew Barden, Donal Carey, Stephen Daniels, Dylan Foley, Eoin Casey, Kyle Sinnott.

    • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Semi Final

De La Salle 2-18 Kilmacthomas 1-14

Our junior B hurlers qualified for the final with a hard fought win over Kilmacthomas in St. Mollerans’ excellent grounds last Thursday night. It took a very good second half performance to see us through in a game in which we trailed by five points at the interval and were fortunate not to be further behind as Conor Bohane saved a penalty in injury time. However, we were much improved after the break and goals from Sean Power and Luke Lawlor sees us in the final for the second year in a row.

Kilmacthomas began well and had points in the fifth and seventh minutes. Conor Dunphy opened our account a minute later after good play by Lee Hayes. An exchange of points involving Sean Power followed before Kilmacthomas hit three in a row to lead 0-6 to 0-2 after sixteen minutes. A pointed free by Eamonn Fitzgerald after Sean Power was fouled reduced the arrears but Kilmacthomas replied with two of their own to make it 0-8 to 0-3 after twenty minutes. Points from Ian Condon and Eamonn Fitzgerald after Luke Lawlor was fouled improved matters but Kilmacthomas replied with one of their own in the 25th minute. Another foul on Luke Lawlor produced our final score of the half from Eamonn Fitzgerald but Kilmacthomas scored two more before their failure to convert that penalty leaving us trailing 0-11 to 0-6 at halftime.

Eamonn Fitzgerald opened the second half scoring in the first minute after Conor O’Toole was fouled and we were right back in it in the third minute when after Luke Lawlor’s goalbound shot came back off the woodwork, Sean Power was on hand to finish to the net. Kilmacthomas replied with a pointed free a minute later and there was no further score until the 12th minute when Conor O’Toole pointed a free after Christopher Sheehan was fouled. Ian Condon levelled the match with an excellent point in the 13th minute and we were ahead a minute later when Conor O’Toole pointed again after another foul on Christopher Sheehan. Luke Lawlor followed up with a point and we led 1-11 to 0-12 midway through the half. Conor O’Toole pointed in the 18th minute but Kilmacthomas replied likewise. Conor O’Toole and Ian Condon then created the opportunity for Luke Lawlor to score a cracking goal in the 20th minute. However within a minute Kilmacthomas goaled themselves to make it 2-12 to 1-13. Two Conor O’Toole frees after fouls on himself and Sean Power followed by points from Lee Hayes and Sean Power made it 2-16 to 1-13 after twenty seven minutes. Kilmacthomas pointed a minute later but points from Eamonn Fitzgerald and Conor O’Toole ended the scoring.

Scorers: Conor O’Toole 0-6 (0-4 frees), Sean Power 1-2, Eamonn Fitzgerald 0-5 (0-4 frees), Luke Lawlor 1-1, Ian Condon 0-2, Conor Dunphy and Lee Hayes 0-1 each.

Panel: Conor Bohane (captain), Tom Crotty, David Sutton, Darragh Fitzpatrick, Mark Joy-Kinsella, Alan Fitzgerald, Eoin Treacy, Ian Condon, Conor Dunphy, Conor O’Toole, Lee Hayes, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Sean Power, Barry Twomey Luke Lawlor, Christopher Sheehan, Jack O’Donohue, Ronan O’Connor, Niall Walsh, Philip Burke, Ciaran Corrigan (injured), Jamie Sage (injured), Niall O’Sullivan (injured), Jeff Cahill (injured).

    • County Senior Hurling Championship

De La Salle 3-20 Abbeyside 0-14

Our senior hurlers ensured a place in the knockout stages of the championship with a comfortable win over an understrength Abbeyside team in Walsh Park last Saturday. After the lengthy lay off it was good to see this performance from our lads given we were without the injured Ian Flynn, Michael Doherty, Stephen Daniels and Eoin Madigan.

We opened the scoring as early as twelve seconds with Jake Dillon pointing and Jack Fagan adding a second twenty seconds later. Abbeyside then pointed still inside the first minute before Shane Ryan (3), John Mullane and Adam Farrell made it 0-7 to 0-1 after eight minutes. An exchange of points involving David Greene followed before Kevin Moran, Kenneth Byrne and David Greene set up Shane Ryan for our first goal. Abbeyside then pointed but Shane Ryan replied to make it 1-9 to 0-3 after fifteen minutes. Abbeyside added their fourth point before a superb cross field pass from Jake Dillon was taken at speed by John Mullane and crashed to the net. John was nearly in again shortly after but his low shot was deflected over the bar in one of several fine saves by the Abbeyside goalkeeper. Abbeyside then shot three points in a row before Jack Fagan replied for us. A late exchange of points involving Paidi Nevin, playing his first championship game in sixteen months, left us ahead 2-12 to 0-8 at half time. Early second half points from Eddie Meaney, Jake Dillon and Jack Fagan stretched our lead before Abbeyside pointed in the 10th minute. Further points were added by Shane Ryan, Eddie Barrett and Jack Fagan with Abbeyside replying in the 14th minute to make it 2-18 to 0-10. Shane Ryan pointed in the 16th and 19th minutes. Abbeyside came back with three points between the 23rd and 28th minutes. Cormac McCann was then introduced for his senior debut and he made an immediate impact dispossessing a defender and setting up Jack Fagan for our third goal. Abbeyside ended the scoring with an injury time point

Scorers: Shane Ryan 1-7 (0-4 frees, 0-1 ‘65), Jack Fagan 1-4 (0-1 free), John Mullane 1-2, Jake Dillon 0-2, Adam Farrell, David Greene, Paidi Nevin, Eddie Meaney and Eddie Barrett 0-1 each.

    • County Minor Hurling Championship Quarter Final

De La Salle 1-16 Clonea 1-13

Our minor hurlers qualified for a semi final clash with either Mount Sion or Abbeyside with a hard earned victory over Clonea in a game dominated by frees last Sunday morning in Kill. The feature of the game was the fact that Thomas Douglas accounted for all our scores bar one point.

Playing with the wind we struggled in the first quarter with points from Thomas Douglas and Dylan Finn our only scores. We received a boost in the 19th minute when Thomas Douglas’ free ended up in the net and he followed up with four points in a row. Three further points helped us to a 1-9 to 0-7 half time lead. Another three points from Thomas helped us to lead 1-12 to 0-8 midway through the second half. Clonea pointed twice before Thomas Douglas reeled off another three points. Clonea pointed and Thomas Douglas got our last score in the 26th minute to make it 1-16 to 0-11. Clonea battled to the end adding to points before converting an injury time penalty to end the scoring.

    Scorers: Thomas Douglas 1-15 (1-10 frees, 0-1 ‘65), Dylan Finn 0-1.

Panel: Donal Carey, Ethan Halloran, Peter Grogan, Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan, Sam Flynn, Chris Kong, Ian Condon, Sean Carton, Conor Giles-Doran, Darren Kenneally, Dan Casey, Luke Flynn, Kevin Hennessy, Thomas Douglas, Dylan Finn, Eoin McGrath-Butler, Ciaran Corrigan, Colm Maher, Sean Power, Eoin Treacy, Eamonn Brosnan, Aidan Gannon.

Our SDCU sponsored U-13 hurlers played in the Eastern Final on Sunday afternoon in Walsh Park. We faced a strong Ballygunner team and at half time we were behind by six points. However the Ballygunner defence held firm and the final scoreline read Ballygunner 1-10 DLS 1-3. Well done to all our lads who had a great campaign and worked hard in all year in training.

    • East Intermediate Football Semi Final

Bonmahon 1-12 De La Salle 2-6

Our understrength intermediate footballers exited the championship when despite a strong second half fightback we went down to Bonmahon in Kill last Saturday. Given that we pointed a penalty in the first half and hit the underside of the crossbar when trailing by a point we could have won this game but overall Bonmahon’s impressive start proved decisive. On a positive note two minors Donal Carey in goal and Luke Flynn made their first starts at this level joining another minor Eoin McGrath-Butler and all acquitted themselves well.

A poor start when playing against the wind saw us trail by 0-6 to 0-0 after nine minutes. Mitchell Casey opened our account in the 13th minute but Bonmahon replied with a point in the 15th minute and added a goal three minutes later to make it 1-7 to 0-1. The arrival of David Greene helped to strengthen our defence and freed up Kenneth Byrne for his very effective covering role. Mitchell Casey pointed in the 20th minute and he pointed a free three minutes later after he was fouled himself but was out of luck when Stephen Dalton was brought down as his penalty carried over the bar. Just before halftime Bonmahon pointed to see us trail 1-8 to 0-4 at the break. The second half was slow to get going but we got back in the game in the eight minute when a move began by keeper Donal Carey and involving Luke Flynn, Kenneth Byrne, Lee Hayes and Joey Twomey ended with Mitchell Casey crashing the ball to the roof of the net. Mitchell followed up a minute later with a long range point and in the 16th minute Thomas Kearney pointed to make it 1-8 to 1-6. Frees in the 20t hand 22nd minutes stretched Bonmahon’s lead to four but a minute later Kenneth Byrne, Thomas Kearney and Eoin McGrath-Butler set up Joey Twomey who beat the goalkeeper for our second goal. We were out of luck in our next attack when Peter O’Hagan set up Lee Hayes but his shot came down off the underside of the crossbar and Bonmahon cleared. Late points in the 29th and 32nd minutes saw Bonmahon through to the final.

Scorers: Mitchell Casey 1-5 (0-1 free, 0-1 penalty), Joey Twomey 1-0, Thomas Kearney 0-1.

Panel: Donal Carey, Ryan Duke, Colm Clancy, Luke Flynn, Kenneth Byrne, Stephen Dalton, Oran Keevers, Thomas Kearney (captain), Dylan Foley, Eoin McGrath-Butler, Lee Hayes, David Whittle, Joey Twomey, Keith Cooney, Mitchell Casey, David Greene, Peter O’Hagan.

    • County Minor Hurling Championship

Ballygunner 3-15 De La Salle 1-9

Our minor hurlers were well beaten by the home side in Ballygunner last Friday. This was probably one of our worst performances in this grade for some years in a game in which we were out hurled, out fought and out thought with several of our players struggling with the basics when under pressure. With one game left before the knockout stages it would appear that a lot of soul searching has to be done if we are to have any chance of retaining our county title.

Ballygunner opened the scoring in the second minute but Sam Flynn equalised from a sixty five in the fifth minute. Two minutes later we were ahead when Ciaran Corrigan and Kevin Hennessy combined for Thomas Douglas to finish low to the net. Ballygunner then took control and between the 11th and 22nd minutes hit 2-5 without reply. A foul on Thomas Douglas saw Luke Flynn convert and further points from Thomas Douglas and Sam Flynn raised hopes of a comeback but Ballygunner added two points before the break to lead 2-8 to 1-5. Points either side of a Ballygunner point from Kevin Hennessy and Luke Flynn made it 2-9 to 1-7 after ten minutes but Ballygunner then took over hitting 1-6 without reply between the 11th and 23rd minutes. Two late points from Kevin Hennessy and Sean Carton ended the scoring on a disappointing night.

Scorers: Thomas Douglas 1-1, Luke Flynn 0-3 (0-2 frees), Sam Flynn (0-1 ’65) and Kevin Hennessy 0-2 each, Sean Carton 0-1.

    • East Intermediate Hurling Quarter Final

Ballygunner 2-21 De La Salle 2-19 after extra time

Our intermediate hurlers exited the championship when they were beaten by Ballygunner after extra time after a very good game in Dunhill last Saturday. We trailed at half time 1-9 to 1-7 with a Thomas Douglas goal being the highlight. A second Thomas Douglas goal in the second half brought us level at 2-9 to 1-12 and it finished 2-14 to 1-17 at the end of normal time. A goal chance missed early in extra time proved vital and we trailed 1-20 to 2-16 at half time. Ballygunner goaled early in the second half to go four ahead and try as we could we were unable to come any closer than two points at the finish. Congrats to Ballygunner on their win.

Our U-14 hurlers had a mixed week losing to Ballygunner on Monday last on a score of 3-11 to 0-8. This was not as a one sided a result as the score would indicate. While Balygunner came by their scores a little easier than our lads, the main difference between was obviously the three goals. We had three goal chances which we were unlucky not to convert, two in particular brought  top saves from the excellent Ballygunner goalkeeper.

The lads got back on track on Wednesday night with a well earned 3-10 to 0-7 win over a very committed Tramore side at Gracedieu. The group stages of this competition are coming to a close and the knockout section will begin shortly.

Training. All juvenile teams are now back in training after the summer break.

De La Salle 0-16 Kilmacthomas 1-11 (after extra time)

Our intermediate footballers qualified for the semi final with a hard fought extra time victory over Kilmacthomas in Carrickbeg last Friday night. It was a game in which both teams battled to the end but our performance in the first half of extra time was the winning of the game and we were able to hold out when Kilmacthomas rallied in the second half.

Kilmacthomas opened well scoring two points inside the first three minutes. Joey Twomey opened our account in the fifth minute but Kilmacthomas added further points in the 10th and 14th minutes. Three points from Lee Hayes, Kenneth Byrne and Mitchell Casey between the 21st and 25th minutes levelled matters. Kilmacthomas pointed in the 27th minute but two points from Lee Hayes had us ahead 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval. The second half began with Kilmacthomas converting a penalty in the third minute. Points by Colm Morris in the fifth minute and Joey Twomey in the sixth minute made it all square. We missed a great opportunity in the ninth minute when Lee Hayes was fouled but the KIlmacthomas keeper saved Colm Morris’s penalty. The next score came in the 23rd minute when minor Eoin McGrath-Butler pointed but Kilmacthomas pointed a free in the 25th minute. Another free in the 30th minute put Kilmacthomas ahead but a superb injury time equaliser in the 31st minute from Colm Morris ensured extra time. We began extra time well with Eoin McGrath-Butler pointing from the throw in. Adam O’Sullivan and Eoin McGrath-Butler added further points by the third minute. Kilmacthomas pointed in the fourth minute but two frees from Lee Hayes and a point from Adam O’Sullivan had us ahead 0-16 to 1-8 at half time. Kilmacthomas resumed strongly and pointed three times by the fourth minute. However, there was no further score and we held out for a deserved win.

Scorers: Lee Hayes 0-5 (0-2 frees), Eoin McGrath-Butler 0-3, Joey Twomey, Colm Morris and Adam O’Sullivan 0-2 each, Kenneth Byrne and Mitchell Casey 0-1 each.

    • East Intermediate Hurling Championship

De La Salle 2-20 Ferrybank 1-15

Our intermediate hurlers qualified for the quarter final of the championship when they defeated Ferrybank in Carrickbeg last Friday. This was the best performance of the campaign by our young team who trailed by a point at the break having faced the wind and went on to play excellently in the second half with our opponents defence unable to cope with the twin threat of Thomas Douglas and Cormac McCann.

We opened with a Brian Cunningham point inside the first minute but Ferrybank replied with three points inside the first five minutes. An exchange of points involving Brian Cunningham followed before frees from Bryan Phelan and Brian Cunningham levelled matters by the 13th minute. Further points from Brian Cunningham, Thomas Douglas and Cormac McCann were cancelled out by Ferrybank to leave it 0-7 each after twenty four minutes. Ferrybank added two points before Brian Cunningham ended the first half scoring as both sides were reduced to fourteen men to leave us trailing 0-9 to 0-8. Ferrybank began the second half well pointing either side o fa Thomas Douglas point by the fourth minute. We took control of the game then and three excellent points in a row from Thomas Douglas, two from Michael Roche and one from Cormac McCann had us ahead 0-15 to 0-11 midway through the half. Ferrybank replied with three points in three minutes but we goaled in the 19th minute when Thomas Kearney and Cormac McCann set up Thomas Douglas who crashed the ball low to the net. Mikey Costigan added a point from distance and Cormac McCann got our second goal when he was on hand to finish to the net after Brian Cunningham’s shot was saved to make it 2-16 to 0-14 after twenty one minutes. Brian Cunningham added two frees before a gosl I nte 30t hminute for Ferrybank reduced the rrears. Mikey Costigan pointed a free and Oran Keevers added an excellent score before a Ferrybank free was deflected over the bar for the final score.
