• County Minor Hurling Championship

Mount Sion 2-9 De La Salle 0-12

Our minor hurlers new campaign began with a repeat of the 2015 County U-16 final and as on that day we again suffered a three point defeat to Mount Sion in Mount Sion last Friday after another hard fought game. The old saying that goals win games proved true again as one in each half for our opponents proved decisive in a game in which the vast majority of the scores on both sides came from frees. However, there is a new system operating this year in that no team is knocked out in the league stages with the top two teams qualifying for the semi finals and the other four playing quarter finals. Credit to the powers that be that introduced this new system which should make interesting knockout stages.

We opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a Kevin Hennessy free after a foul on Sean Carton. Mount Sion replied with two points before Dan Casey levelled matters in the seventh minute. Mount Sion then took control and scored 1-3 without reply to lead 1-5 to 0-2 after seventeen minutes. Fouls on Dylan Finn and Darren Kenneally saw Kevin Hennessy reduce the arrears before Mount Sion converted another free. A foul on Kevin Hennessy saw him add another before a fine point from Ciaran Corrigan made it 1-6 to 0-6 at half time. Mount Sion made a great start to the second half when they goaled from a penalty in the third minute. At this stage we introduced Thomas Douglas who like Conor Giles-Doran and Aidan Gannon is recovering from injury and we replied with two frees from Kevin Hennessy and one from play from Ian Condon to make it 2-6 to 0-9 after eleven minutes. A foul on Thomas Douglas saw Kevin Hennessy reduce the arrears to two points in the 16th minute but two Mount Sion frees in the 22nd and 25th minutes made it a four point game. Two more Kevin Hennessy frees after fouls on Ciaran Corrigan and Chris Kong reduced the arrears but an injury time pointed free ensured Mount Sion’s deserved victory.

• East Intermediate Hurling Championship

Clonea 2-27 De La Salle 1-17

Another poor second half display by our intermediate hurlers saw them well beaten by Clonea in Carrickbeg last Saturday. This was a game in which the sides were level after twenty two minutes but five minutes in to the second half we found ourselves ten points in arrears and it was game over.

We began well with early points from Sean Carton and Michael Roche. Clonea opened their account and an exchange of frees involving Brian Cunningham had us ahead 0-3 to 0-2 after eight minutes. Further points from Michael Roche and Brian Cunningham increased our lead before five consecutive Clonea points followed. A Mikey Costigan point was followed by another Clonea point and we trailed 0-8 to 0-6 with just fifteen minutes played. Two Mikey Costigan points were cancelled out by Clonea points by the 20th minute before points from Cormac McCann and a Brian Cunningham free after a foul on Thomas Kearney made it 0-10 each in the 22nd minute. Clonea then took over and hit four points without reply to lead 0-14 to 0-10 at half time. Clonea began the second half with a goal in the second minute and added three points by the fifth minute. Thomas Douglas, who had just been introduced, pointed in the sixth minute but Clonea replied with three points and a second goal to lead 2-20 to 0-11 after ten minutes. Points from Thomas Douglas and Michael Roche (2) reduced the arrears and Thomas Douglas converted a penalty in the 16th minute when after the goalkeeper had saved from Cormac McCann, Brian Cunningham was fouled in the resultant goalmouth scramble by a defender. Clonea pointed before a foul on Thomas Douglas saw Brian Cunningham point the free in the 19th minute to make it 2-21 to 1-15. The last ten minutes saw Clonea send over six points with two Brian Cunningham frees, after fouls on Thomas Kearney and Sean Carton, being our reply.

• Juvenile News

U-16  Hurling

Our U-16 hurlers have played three matches in their championship and unfortunately have yet to win a match. They began with a narrow defeat to Brickey Rangers and suffered a comprehensive defeat at home to Passage. They played Mount Sion on Wednesday last and were defeated on a score of 3-11 to 1-11. The next match is against Ballygunner on 9th August.

U-13 Hurling

Our U-13 hurlers defeated Tramore on a score of 6-7 to 3-3 in Tramore on Monday last. This was a much more difficult game than the scoreline suggests. Tramore were excellent in the first half and De La Salle led by four points at the  break. We improved in the second half and a few opportune scores saw us get the victory over a very committed Tramore side. This concludes the group stages of the competition and the team have qualified for the Eastern semi final by virtue of topping their group.  The semi final is fixed for early September.

U-12 Hurling.

Our U-12 team had a busy week. They played the knockout stages of the Clonea tournament on Saturday. The qualified for the final by virtue of a quarter final win over Killeagh and a tremendous win over James Stephens in what was one of the best juvenile games of hurling played at that tournament. The lads were defeated by a point in the final by a very good Fermoy side on a score of 4-5 to 3-7.

On Wednesday they played their last U-12 City League match with a good win over Mullinavat on a score of 6-6 to 1-6.

• Lotto

There was no winner of our Lotto jackpot last Monday night and it now stands at €1,250. The next draw takes place on Tuesday 8th August. Numbers drawn were 2, 8, 23, 32. There were five winners of €20 each.

• County Senior Hurling League

De La Salle 3-20 Lismore 1-24

Our understrength senior hurlers had a narrow win over Lismore in an entertaining league encounter played in Gracedieu last Saturday evening. The game was notable for the welcome return to competitive action of Paidi Nevin after a thirteen months absence with a cruciate knee injury and fittingly it was Paidi’s late goal that won the game for us.

• County U-14 Hurling Championship

De La Salle 3-5 Mount Sion 2-8

Our U-14 hurlers made a great comeback to draw with Mount Sion in Mount Sion last Monday. Early in the second half we trailed 2-6 to 0-3 but goals from Jack Twomey (2) and Alex Keane brought us back into the game and an injury time point from Cormac Dawson ensured a share of the points.

• Munster U-21 Hurling Championship

Commiserations to Shane Ryan (captain), Eddie Meaney and the Waterford U-21 hurlers on their heart breaking defeat by Cork in Walsh Park last week.

• Lotto

Congratulations to Aggie Scannell who was the winner of our record Lotto jackpot of €19,500 on last Monday night. The seller of the winning ticket was Maria Twomey. • Club Photographic Exhibition

To mark the 90th anniversary of our club we have placed a permanent photographic exhibition in the clubhouse, Gracedieu. These photographs cover the clubs history from 1927 to 2017.  We are holding an open night Thursday 20th July from 7pm to 10pm. All are welcome! Refreshments served on the night.

• East Intermediate Football Championship

De La Salle 2-14 Dunhill 1-7

Our intermediate footballers ensured a quarter final place with a comfortable win over Dunhill in Fenor last Friday night. It was a game in which we played some very good football in the first half and when we scored our second goal immediately after the restart the win was never in doubt with the only downside being a second half injury to John Mullane. The game proved a personal triumph for Mitchell Casey, who having stopped playing through a persistent injury and had become a selector, but was forced to line out after some late withdrawals went on to score 1-6.

Dunhill opened the scoring and Mitchell Casey equalised all within the first minute. The outstanding Adam Farrell put us ahead a minute later and further points from Colm Morris and Mitchell Casey had us three ahead after six minutes. Dunhill got back into the game and three points saw the sides level by the midway point. Good play by Lee Hayes and Adam Farrell saw John Mullane put us back in front in the 16th minute and John then set up Colm Morris for a point. A fine run by Stephen Dalton made the opening for Lee Hayes to point in the 22nd minute and we then got our first goal when Colm Morris goaled from a penalty after Peter O’Hagan was brought down when through on goal. We added on points from Lee Hayes (2) and Mitchell Casey (2) to lead 1-11 to 0-4 at the break. The second half began with Thomas Kearney winning the throw in and giving it to Adam Farrell who raced through before supplying John Mullane who set up Mitchell Casey for a cracking goal all inside twenty seconds. Lee Hayes and Mitchell Casey added points with both being set up by Adam Farrell before Dunhill goaled in the 11th minute to make it 2-13 to 1-4. Mitchell Casey pointed a free in the 14th minute after a foul on Colm Morris which proved to be our last score. Dunhill scored three points in the final quarter as the game petered out.

Well done to Derek McGrath, Kevin Moran, Jake Dillon, Shane McNulty, Stephen Daniels, Mark Cooney, Fergal O’Brien and the Waterford senior hurlers on the long awaited and exciting victory over Kilkenny in Thurles last Saturday. We now look forward to a quarter final match in two weeks.

• U-13 Hurling League

De La Salle 4-8 St. Mollerans  2-2

Our U-13 hurling team sponsored by St Dominic Credit Union played the third match in their group against St. Mollerans in Gracedieu on Monday last. The scoreline might suggest an easy victory but this was in fact a very tight game of hurling. We opened with a couple of points to our opponents one, we goaled and they responded with a point. We added another goal and two points to lead 2-4 to 0-2 at halftime. We continued to score after halftime and two further goals and four points had us lead 4-8 to 0-2. However our opponents never gave up and scored two goals and would have scored more were it not for the excellent Dylan Quinlan Meagher in goal.

This tournament now takes a break for three weeks and we resume with a visit to Tramore in three weeks.

De La Salle Camogie Club would like to offer its deepest sympathies  to the family of the late Michael Drohan, Tirconnel Ave, Lismore Lawn, Waterford on his recent passing. Michael’s son Declan and his grandchildren Caoimhe & Evan are all heavily involved in both the camogie and gaa club teams over the last number of years.

• Juvenile Club – Sponsored by St. Dominic Credit Union

We held the official launch of our partnership with SDCU on Saturday last. We enjoyed the glorious weather and a huge number of our juvenile players turned up to get involved in the day’s events.

First up was the presentation of a set of jerseys for our U-12/U-13 teams. John Mullane was on hand to accept the jerseys on behalf of the club from Rachel Walsh, Business Development & Marketing Officer with St. Dominic Credit Union.

Following this we had all our Juvenile players from U-6 to U-14 involved in a series of internal blitzes. There were “freebies” and treats for all players afterwards generously provided by SDCU.

A very big “Thank You” to Rachel and her team from SDCU for coming along to Gracedieu on Saturday and helping to make the day such a huge success.

• “Guess the Score” Fundraiser

Many thanks to all our Juvenile Players and their families who supported our “Guess the Score” fundraiser on Saturday last June 17th. It was a great success and many thanks to St. Dominic Credit Union who sponsored the prizes.

• U-13 Hurling

Our U-13 Hurlers began their 2017 campaign on Monday last at Gracedieu with a hard earned victory over our near neighbours Mount Sion on a score of 3-2 to 1-4. This was an extremely competitive match between two evenly matched sides and very little between them at the end. We opened with a goal but our opponents replied with two points and a goal of their own. We got a point so the minimum separated the sides at the break on a score-line of 1-2 to 1-1 to our visitors.

We equalised early on but Mount Sion responded with two quick points to lead by two. The game was very evenly balanced at this stage but we managed to add a further two goals to run out victors. Both sides are to be commended on a thoroughly competitive match.

Hard luck to Stephen Dalton and the Waterford senior footballers who exited the championship after a brave fight against Derry in Fraher field last Saturday.

We played our second match of this years U-13 hurling league  with a hard earned victory over Clann na Gael in Dunhill last Monday. This was a very tight game but a couple of fortitous goals saw us lead at halftime. We started the second half with another pair of goals and this made it very difficult for our opponents who battled to the very end.
